Science education is increasingly gaining attention at a national level. Whilst Australian scientists have made outstanding contributions at an international level to advances in Science, there is concern from some areas that Australia is not keeping up with world trends.

Better instruments, bigger laboratories, faster and more powerful computers and more sophisticated techniques is driving a surge in Science. One Darwin school, The Essington School Darwin, has however been focusing on pushing the boundaries in science education over the last ten years. Essington Principal, David Cannon, said: “We want our students to be part of the future of science development within Australia and the world. As a result we have been focusing on science curriculum issues identified at a national and international level and responding to these issues”.The School’s desire to provide its students with an enhanced Science curriculum has seen the school extend classroom learning experiences and introduce accelerated and unique Science education programs. Part of this enhancement includes developing student awareness of the ‘new’ sciences, the various areas of science that will be important in the lifetime of our students. The School’s Aquaculture Centre is designed so students and teachers can easily engage in studying marine and aquatic animals at first hand. The School’s study of nesting flatback turtles on Bare Sand Island has become a feature of its Science programs each year. From May to September groups of students travel to the Island to observe the nesting turtles. In September a group of Middle School students will spend a week in Cairns visiting and studying various coral reef systems off the coast of Cairns and Port Douglas as part of their marine science extension study program. For several years Year 6 to 9 students have completed advanced practical classes in the undergraduate Science laboratories at the University. Students are also able to study Aquaculture at the University. The School’s enhanced Science programs has translated into outstanding assessment results on independent national and international science assessment programs in the last five years. For further information about The Essington School Darwin and enrolment for 2013 and 2014, phone 8985 0100.
