Child Studies Assisting inLiteracy at Primary School

Mrs Holder - Technology Teacher-has begun organisingexcursions for Year 10 ChildStudies students to make regularvisits to Katoomba Public school, where they assist teachers andstudents in the classes ofKindergarten and Year 1.

This experience has beenwelcomed by the KPS teachers, who love the extra help, and theirstudents really enjoy theinteraction and personal attentionfrom the high school students. The Year 10 students can also putthis experience on their resumesas it helps them to gainconfidence and employability.

They have written an interviewabout their experiences withthese excursions:

1. What did you first notice aboutthe classrooms when you wentthere? We were shocked by how littleeverything was - the chairs andthe students. The classrooms arevery busy and there is a reallearning buzz of excitement in theroom.

2. What has your experiencebeen like going to the school tohelp the children?Very fun and exciting experience. It is the highlight of the week forme.

3. What have you learned whenworking with the primary students- Kindy and Year 1?I've learned that these childrenhave so much fun to offer. Theirlittle brains are learning so fast.

4. How do you interact with thechildren?

The children love the company-so we join in and spend lots oftime talking and sitting with them.

5. How do you help the childrenwith their learning? We help with painting - there is alot of organising and cleaning thatgoes into art time and we arehappy to help with this. We alsohelp with drawing letters andreading words.

6. What was your reaction abouthow the children communicatewith each other? They are very loud and busy andwe help them with theircommunication- setting a goodexample of listening and takingturns at talking.

7. How do you interact with thechildren?Calmly and always trying to breakinstructions down so they canunderstand the tasks.

8. What is the difference in theway the teachers teach at theprimary school to how yourteachers teach you?Their teachers let them get awaywith a lot more and they have tohelp a lot more with personal careissues such as opening lunchboxes and organising their work.
