Truly, time goes by quickly when you are having fun! As we journey into the third quarter of 2012, there is already so much we can reflect on over the first

six months, as well as plenty more to look ahead to for the remainder of the year.

We recently had our first ever KHI Management Retreat at Grand Dorsett Subang in Malaysia, which was attended by General Managers, Directors of Sales and Marketing and Financial Controllers from our hotel teams in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and China, together with key senior personnel from our Corporate Offices.

Seeing more than 50 participants from various countries across Asia at the retreat somewhat provided me with a sense of gratification on our accomplishments thus far. More importantly, the retreat allowed each of us to attain a shared understanding of the group’s vision and goals going forward, and also the chance for everyone to be updated on KHI’s latest progress and activities. On this note, we will soon be rolling out our Vision and Core Values training programme; an initiative spearheaded by the Corporate Human Capital Development and its training team.

As you flip through this issue of KHI Pulse, it is heartening to see many of our hotels taking the effort to spend time with their respective associates via teambuilding and other staff activities. Personally, I find each moment spent with team members extremely essential for us to keep ourselves on track towards achieving our goals.

Dorsett Regency Kuala Lumpur’s ‘Singing’ Chef Wins Hearts The award-winning culinary team at Dorsett Regency

Kuala Lumpur continues to fill their expanded trophy cabinet with their latest achievements. This time

around, the hotel’s Demi Chef Gerard Jerome Selvaraj grabbed the spotlight when he won two main awards at the 2nd Glittering Stars of Kuala Lumpur Hotels Awards 2011 held recently in the city.

Initiated by Malaysian Association of Hotels - KL Chapter, the annual event is aimed at recognising the services and contributions of employees working in Kuala Lumpur-based hotels, particularly those who demonstrated outstanding services, displayed exemplary standards, as well as contributed to the community.

Amongst the main awards presented on the night were the Super Star Award, Innovative Star Award, Personal Star Award, CSR Star Award and Departmental Star Awards.

For Chef Gerard, who took home the much sought-after CSR Star Award – for his outstanding contribution to community services and for the wellness of others – as well as the Illustrious Super Star Award - bestowed upon a hotelier who has single-handedly influenced the entire industry and displayed exemplary standards in major aspects of the profession – the success came as a surprise.

“I was not expecting to win as there were many experienced and talented chefs competing for the awards and I felt slightly humbled by their presence,” said Gerard unassumingly.

He added, “However, winning these awards is more significant to the whole team at Dorsett Regency Kuala Lumpur rather than for me alone. This is not just about the culinary team; it is for everyone from the kitchen, to the service personnel, and right up to the human resources department.”

Winning awards is not something new to Gerard since joining Dorsett Regency Kuala Lumpur as a trainee in 2008. His collection of accomplishments from the hotel includes Employee of the Month Award (2010), Group General Manager Certificate (2011), 2nd Quarter Star Award (2011) and Star of the Year (2011).

Gerard also gained national recognition at Culinaire Malaysia 2011 where he won silver medal in the Seafood Main Course category, bronze medal in Remy and Linguini Team category, and helped Dorsett Regency Kuala Lumpur to win the overall second runner-up spot in the competition.

But more than just his talents, it was his heart that won

Up Close & Personal

him the honours. The 23-year-old chef finds time over the weekends and his off days to volunteer at soup kitchens for the homeless and to serve food to the less fortunate people around Klang Valley.

“I have been very blessed to have attained all that I have in my life so far. I feel that it is only right for me to give back to the society and to the communities that need our help and support,” explained Gerard.

Besides being a photography enthusiast, Chef Gerard has also inked his position as Dorsett Regency Kuala Lumpur’s leading crooner, as he frequently shows off his talent during activities and CSR projects carried out by the hotel.

“Gerard is well liked by his colleagues because of his friendly nature and positive personality. While he unquestionably has the talent, it is his teamwork and his willingness to help others and to guide the younger staffs in the team that makes him stand out from the rest,” pointed out Dorsett Regency Kuala Lumpur Executive Chef, Yau Kok Kheong.

The Mercer, Central Park Hotel and Lan Kwai Fong Hotel @ Kau U Fong Go Trees Crazy!

Green Globe has certified Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong and Cosmo Hotel Mongkok for their compliance against the Green Globe standards for Sustainable Travel and Tourism. Both hotels have implemented a variety of initiatives to assume social responsibility and reduce energy and water consumption as well as waste, including having installed energy-efficient lighting and are redesigning amenities in guestrooms, for example installing soap dispensers to reduce the use of disposable items.

The hotels encourage guests to reuse towels and linens, and provide complimentary shuttle bus to multiple destinations, catering to the needs of both leisure and business travellers, as well as reducing carbon emission in the city.

General Manager of both hotels Anita Chan said: “Social responsibility has been and will continue to be a priority for us. As one of the largest industries, it is a necessary step for hotels to embrace ‘green’ policies to save our planet. We also have to ensure that the importance of sustainability is passed on to our guests.”

The team comprising associates from The Mercer, Central Park Hotel and Lan Kwai Fong Hotel @ Kau U Fong joined hands to face up to the Tree Planting Challenge 2012 event held on 22 April.

Organised by Friends of the Earth, the competition required participants to complete a 10 km hike while planting tree seedlings along the way. In display of its commitment to a better global environment and its continued involvement in green-related activities, the associates successfully completed the challenge in four hours and planted 30 tree seedlings.

“It was an excellent way for us to come together on a bright and sunny day to do our part for the environment around us. These initiatives would help us to be more aware of our carbon footprint and teach us what we can do to reduce our impact on global warming,” said the hotels’ General Manager Rebecca Kwan.

In supporting this global environmental-focus event, Dorsett Regency Hong Kong joined the Earth Hour 2012 event by switching off all non-essential lights of the hotel from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on 31 March.
