GIZ in India

The organization I have chosen for the analysis is GIZ which is abbreviation for Deutsch geschellschaft für Internationale Zusammearbeit (GIZ). It is a private organization owned by German Federal Government. GIZ has been serving in India from past 50 years in the different sectors notably in the fields of sustainable economic development, energy conservation and clean development. It is implementing projects on behalf of the European Commission, Indian state governments and International companies.

Partners

GIZ works with various organizations in wide ranging activities, with some of the key partners included.

Various ministers of the Government of India & connected authorities. Various state departments and their authorities. Industry associations, academics, training institutions and NGO’s.

Goals of Public Private Partnership

GIZ roles in India are aligned with the main objective of GIZ as an organization. They are:

Supporting energy efficiency in India. Promoting renewable energy development to combat carbon emissions.

Supporting the adaption of the climate change and providing financial incentives to improve likelihood in the line of sustainable economic development.

Providing advice and solutions in climate related problems in urbanization, sanitation industry, and industrial waste and waste water management.

Creating awareness about Environmental policy, Conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

Benefits & challenges of the public private partnership

GIZ brings the technical expertise to work on the challenging projects, some of which are still in the developing stages in India.

GIZ is present in India from long time. It has forged good relationships with the local stakeholders.

GIZ is a reputed organization & known for the quality work in many different countries. The successful work of GIZ has encouraged many other global institutions to forge partnership with local partners in India.

GIZ gets a big proportion of funding from European Institutions. This indirectly requires GIZ to align with the goals of donor organizations, thereby putting a degree of conflicts in some cases.

Most of the projects of GIZ in India are done in collaboration with Government Agencies, who also act as a sole donor for the projects. Though GIZ has got technical expertise, it has to compete with others in getting the work done.

GIZ is working in the field of Sustainable Economic Development, Clean Development Mechanism as well as other sectors related to it. The knowledge about these sector is fairly low in India, thus making work of GIZ very challenging.
