Laboratory Quality Relationship Matrix
Note: Many Labs will gain accreditation in just a few parameters yet imply a broader competence. Check the NATA website.http://www.nata.com.au/nata/orgs-and-facilities/advanced_search
ISO Standard ( ISO 17025)All Calibration Labs
should conform to an international standard. The only true credibility
for a calibration facility is provided by ISO 17025.
Conformance to ISO17025 requires a
laboratory to analyse and calculate specific uncertainties of
measurement against each parameter they
claim the ability to test against. This is in
addition to many other quality requirements
specific to the science of Metrology.
Accreditation (NATA)External audits by an
internationally recognised organisation such as NATA
provide the most stringent test of a Laboratories conformance to the standard and against the
laboratories scope of accreditation and the
competence of the Laboratory Staff.
Many Labs may claim to conform to the standard
however only internally audit themselves against conformance and or
competence. None or very limited independent external
validation.
TraceabilityAccredited bodies will test the laboratories traceability to National or International standards for those parameters
listed in the Laboratories Scope of Accreditation. Traceability is one of the key requirements along with an
independent accreditation body’s assessment of the Laboratories compliance.
Proven Traceability is the cornerstone of a
Laboratories competence in reporting test parameters for
their customers.

Do I need a NATA calibration Certificate really?
1. You require a statement of uncertainties that you will use in calculations to determine the specification of ‘your’ product.
2. Your quality system specifies NATA.3. Regulatory requirements such as the National Measurements act.4. Commonwealth requirements.
Yes if :
Not necessarily if :
1. Uncertainties will not be used in any further calculation.2. Not specified in your quality system or Regulatory/Commonwealth requirements
Important Note : Even if you do not require uncertainties the use of a NATA lab assures quality compliance and if the measurements are within their scope, assures the competence of the lab staff for those specific measurements.

Questions you should ask when choosing a Calibration Laboratory. Price is only part of the equation.
• Do they offer online calibration reports?
• What quality standard do they conform to?
• Are they Accredited?
• Check the NATA website for a list of their accredited parameters. http://www.nata.com.au/nata/orgs-and-facilities/advanced_search
• Do their procedures conform to the Manufacturers Procedure?
• Are they able to perform adjustments?
• Are adjustments included in the calibration price?
• Do the reported results fully comply with Manufacturers recommended test points?
• In many cases the Commonwealth requires a calibration facility to specifically be ‘NATA’ accredited for all testing parameters. If your customer is the Commonwealth, is your calibration provider ‘NATA’ accredited for all the required categories.
• Do they offer a web based product to check the status of your products progress through the calibration or repair process?

Where are Keysight Services and Support headed
1. Full On Line Asset Management for all customers.2. Standards based calibration matching or exceeding National Measurements
Laboratories. Becoming an alternative.3. Expanding our capabilities in to all aspects of metrology including physical
dimensional and temperature.4. We plan to do it all over time.

In summary• If all you care about is a calibration sticker on your unit then print one
yourself and stick it on. • If you genuinely care about the quality of your measurement integrity,
then saving ten or twenty percent to get a substandard calibration is virtually the same thing.
• The real reason to get your instruments calibrated is because you care about the measurements you’re making and need to ensure they are accurate and meaningful.
