MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

I welcome you to this year’s Annual Journal Dinner, at which time we pause to reflect upon the centrality of the shul in our lives and to express our appreciation to these individuals who have distinguished themselves through their dedication and devotion to the shul and community. This year’s event no doubt will prove to be a most memorable one in light of the individuals who have graciously accepted to be our Guests of Honor – Rabbi Jerry and Mrs. Gitty Acker.

The Acker’s connection to the Kew Gardens Synagogue and community at large, spans decades and is reflective of a very deep and genuine bond. Jerry, indeed was nurtured by this community having absorbed the religious values personified by the synagogue and the teaching and example of Mr. Hirsch, of blessed memory.

Jerry also directed the famed “Youth Minyan”, through which so many of its young participants were personally and religiously influenced, having been taught the art of davening, laining the Torah, and the importance of Tefilah B’Tzibur.

In addition, Jerry has provided a deep and profound appreciation of Tisha B’Av in our shul. Through his popular, informative, and well presented shiurim on the Kinos, he has revealed many of their hidden secrets, and has given new life and meaning to a very somber day.

Gitty is the personification of Chesed. She is involved in a variety of chesed projects, many of which are done discreetly, under the radar screen. Whenever a need arises, Gitty is often the go to person, as indeed her home has become the address for so much that goes on in our shul and community.

Together they have raised a beautiful family of children and grandchildren all of whom continue to follow the path of Torah and chesed which they have taught.

I look forward to greeting all of you at this year’s dinner.

It is with a great deal of appreciation and thanks that I extend, on behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Officers of the Kew Gardens Synagogue, a hearty Mazel Tov to this year’s honorees, Rabbi & Mrs. Jerry Acker.

Both, Rabbi Acker and his wife have served as exemplary models of Chessed and concern for our Shul and for the community at large. They are both deeply committed to the growth and resurgence of our Kehilah. Their extension of themselves to be involved in our shul knows no bounds.

Jerry is a Baal Tefillah par excellence. He’s also a committed Board Member and takes his role seriously. Gitty is a Mechaneches with great warmth and support and is devoted to the invigoration of our membership. With this reputation in mind, it gives us great pleasure to congratulate Rabbi & Mrs. Acker on being selected as our Guests of Honor of the Kew Gardens Synagogue for the 2016 Annual Journal Dinner.

I would like to acknowledge our Mora D’asra Rabbi Aryeh Sokoloff, for his involvements in every facet of the shul’s development. I feel indebted to his counsel and Torah guidance.

Special thanks to the Ladies Auxiliary for their devotion to our shul. Thank you Rachel Janashvili and Leo Bikk for your tireless work throughout the year. Also, a special thanks to the Gabbaim of all the Minyonim and all the Baalei Tefilah. A very special thank you to my dear wife for her tremendous dedication to our shul on an ongoing and annual basis both before and during the tenure of my Presidency. We are filled with Tefillah that our Shul will grow into the next chapter of its existence, vital and poised for the advancement for all who come through its doors.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT


It is with particular pleasure that I congratulate our Kehillah for choosing two exceptional human beings to be our Guests of Honor. When I came to Kew Gardens in 1968, Jerry was already here. He was involved in many aspects of the Shul. He was particularly close to Reverend David Hirsch of blessed memory, who was our Executive Director and Shamash. Jerry was very close to him and from him he acquired a full knowledge of the traditions and Minhagim of our Kehillah – and he remains the guardian of that tradition to this day.

Jerry taught many of the younger boys to read the Torah and also the Nusach for various occasions during the course of the year. My own sons were fortunate to be exposed to that reality. It’s not surprising that Jerry is our Baal Tefilah on many of the special occasions of the year.

On his side is a very special lady, Gitty. She is a person of great quality, a real Eyshis Chayil, a wonderful mother and grandmother, and a very good friend. She does it as a natural extension of her essence and her being.

As the Shul moves forward to fulfill its mission, may Hashem grant Ackers long life, good health and much Nachas from their children and grandchildren and may they be able to contribute to the well being of our Kehillah for many years to come.

The last time I was dinner chairman was 2003, when my in-laws were our Shul’s Guests of Honor and being a part of their family, it was both an honor for me and a labor of love. I feel the same way this year, when Rabbi Jerry and Mrs. Gitty Acker graciously accepted this honor. As I am sure many of my fellow Kew Gardens residents will agree, Jerry and Gitty are more than just extremely close friends, they have become part of our extended family. Gitty is like a sister to Shavi and she was each of our daughters’ Morah in Beis Yaakov. She has helped mold them into the wonderful Bnos Yisrael that they have developed into, and we are very grateful. Jerry taught our sons their Bar Mitzvah lainings and they performed beautifully. I have felt very fortunate knowing that they grew up observing such a wonderful role model. I myself have the pleasure of learning from and with Jerry. I cannot think of a more worthy couple to finally be awarded Guests of Honor. May HKB”H continue to give them the strength to maintain their community wide Chesed activities for many more years, to continue being the wonderful people that we know and love, with much Nachas from their beautiful family.

Who are amongst the main pillars of the Kew Gardens Community. The

Ackers and Kew Gardens are synonymous. Jerry, born and bred in Kew

Gardens (well, almost), and Gitty, made Kew Gardens her adopted home.

The Acker house is well known in the community as a house of Chesed,

Hachnasat Orchim, and care for others. Kew Gardens is very honored to

have Jerry as the resident Dikduk scholar of the community.

Kew Gardens is also very honored to have Gitty involved in many projects

in Adath Yeshurun, and for taking on a leading role in the Bikur Cholim of

Kew Gardens.

Last, but certainly not least, we are also very honored and delighted to

be friends and neighbors with Jerry and Gitty.
