Keppelite I September 2009

In the recent Grow Beyond talk (see story on page

22), we heard the story of two brothers who stood

by each other through thick and thin to become a

Singapore-proud brand, Charles & Keith.

From very humble origins in a small shoe shop in

Ang Mo Kio, the brothers banded together to

overcome great odds for their sole vision.

And even as they move into the future

acknowledging the important contribution of their

team, Charles did not forget to mention their

mentors in the story.

Sounds familiar? It is the kind of story to which

Keppelites can immediately feel akin.

After all, Tough Men, Bold Visions – The Story of

Keppel began with “two holes in the ground”

(docks in the yard) and a small group of

Singaporeans who believed that together, they

could build a competent team and business,

despite all the challenges against them.

Their story and those of many Keppelites who have

grown with the Group through the years would

be told over and over, just as their Can do! spirit

would be passed on from one Keppelite to another.

It was therefore apt that at the end of the Grow

Beyond talk, our CEO called for Keppelites to step

up as mentors. Mentors play such important roles

in our people initiatives that we have even

developed a structured programme under Keppel

College (see story on page 20) to better equip

Keppelites for the part.

With the scale and spread of our businesses,

Keppelites have rich professional and personal

experience to share. And over and above our

diversity, the Keppel culture bands us and brands

us.

Mentors help us tell and reflect the Keppel story.

They impart the Keppel culture with immediacy

and great passion to new Keppelites, shaping not

only careers but character. In turn, as they enrich

the lives of others, our mentors enjoy a new and

interesting dimension in their work through their

sharing.

Every Keppelite can make a mark and add to the

chapters. The lead roles and the supporting cast

are equally important in contributing to a good

story.

As a young Keppelite, I feel privileged to be in a

company that is interested in guiding and shaping

me to be a contributing member to Keppel and to

society. I am ready to go back to college, Keppel

College, that is.

Urban population growthposes significant and complexchallenges for governmentsa n d i n t e r n a t i o n a lcommunities, particularly soin Asia which is projected tohave 54% of the world’surban population by 2030.

Mr Antonio Augusto deQueiroz Galvão, GeneralDirector of QGOG said,“I wish to congratulateKeppel FELS for successfullymeeting the milestones ofour project on time.

“Confirming our company’ssatisfaction with Keppel’sperformance, we orderedlast year, a sister unit to benamed the Alpha Star, which will be delivered byKeppel FELS in 2011.

QGOG is one of Brazil’slargest private groups inthe oil and gas sector, supported by a 30,000-strong workforce. In anexclusive interview withKeppelite, Mr AntonioAugusto de QueirozGalvão, General Directorof QGOG shares insights tothe company’s strategy toplay a part in the brightfuture of the Brazilian oiland gas industry.

Where does thepotential of Brazil’senergy market lie?Brazil has discovered atremendous amount ofoil in deepwater. In thelast few years, activities in

the deepwater arena inBrazil have been growingdramatically. We feel thatthe future of Brazil is indeepwater.

Why did you chooseKeppel? There is no doubt thatKeppel FELS is one of themost capable shipyards inthe world to build drillingrigs, not just semis but alsojackups. Keppel FELS hasthe best experience withsemis, having built somevery large production unitsfor Petrobras to work inBrazil.

We did our study, consideredthe price and timing, and

most of all the qualityassurance. We feel thatwe have made the rightchoice to work with KeppelFELS.

Why did you choose theDSSTM 38?The foremost reason is thecapacity of the rig. Gold Starcan drill in 9000 ft of water,so it covers 95% of theexploration regions in Braziland almost 100% of thefields that have beendiscovered in Brazil up tillnow. There are designs thatare larger than the DSSTM 38,but the sea in Brazil is not sorough, so this design isexcellent for Brazilianconditions.

Insights to QGOG

Furthermore, Gold Star canalso drill in many otherparts of the world. It is aninternational-class rig; sheis well suited for Brazilianconditions but she can drilloverseas as well. Weforesee a very long futurefor this rig.

After two years and 10months of working on theYURI KORCHAGIN acrosstwo continents, the firstice-class FSO built byKeppel Singmarine sailedaway from CSC on8 September 2009.

During the initial stage ofbuilding the vessel, KeppelSingmarine was faced withspace constraints as theyard was very packed. Toovercome the challenge,Keppel Singmarine had tobuild the two sections ofthe accommodation blockon top of each other tosave space.

Furthermore, the two mainhull strips were built sideby side on the slipwayand temporarily joinedtogether to be launchedfrom the slipway, afterwhich they were separatedagain before they wereloaded on a large transportvessel for its journey toBaku.

Lee Yoong Hoong, project manager of KeppelSingmarine, shared, “Itwas a tough processtransporting sections ofthe vessel to Caspian Sea.To prepare the hull stripsfor the passage throughthe canal, my teammembers and I had tospend about 14 days on atugboat in the cold whenthe FSO sections and

equipment were transportedthrough the very narrowVolga-Don canal.

“We were quite nervous aswe were worried that thehull strips might not passthrough the canal and wewould be stuck there fordays.”

Despite the challenges, meticulous planning andexcellent project managementensured that things wentsmoothly and the hull sectionsand other equipment arrivedat CSC in good condition andon schedule.

From late October 2008, Leeand a few of his projectmembers camped out for 10months in Baku as theypartnered CSC to put togetherthe sections of the vessel.

Lee added, “We receivedvery good support from CSCin the construction of thevessel and we have workedhand in hand to meet thevery tight deadlines and toensure the safe delivery ofthe vessel.

“Knowing Azeri culturewell, the CSC project teamwas able to help us bridgecommunication and culturalbarriers with our customerand vendors. We appreciatetheir commitment and theeffort they have put in tocomplete the vessel.”

The KFELS B Class jackup has a proven trackrecord for global operations and is designedfor maximum uptime with reduced emissionsand discharges.

Economical and readily upgradeable forhigher performance, the KFELS B Class jackuprig incorporates Keppel’s fully-automated,advanced high capacity rack and pinionelevating technology.

The KFELS B Class jackup is enhanced withseveral safety features including anergonomically designed driller control cabin(DCR), a high availability drilling control anda monitoring system.

The main generators at the heart of the rigmeet the stringent Engine InternationalAir Pollution P r e v e n t i o n ( E I A P P )requirements, and the air-conditioningunits also employ non-ozone depletingrefrigerants. Quiet and energy efficient ACdrives are used for all drilling motors andmooring winches.

In addition, the three legs of the KFELS BClass jackup rig are of the ‘reversed – K’braced steel design, which makes the legsless bulky and obstructive underwater, asopposed to conventional jackup rigs in themarket. This causes minimal disruption tothe eco-system, and allows marine life to co-exist with exploration and drilling activities.

The world is not enoughAzerbaijan may once haveproduced more than half theworld’s oil in the mid 20th

century, but its oil field wasmore recently made famouswhen James Bond wasattacked while on a tour ofthe oil pipelines in the movie“The world is not enough”.

A year before the movie wasmade, Lau Kuat Pin hadalready staked out Azerbaijan,

having worked there since1998 to help start upCaspian Shipyard Company(CSC) in Baku, the capital cityof Azerbaijan. The shipyardis just a few kilometres fromwhere the Bond scene wasfilmed.

From Project Engineer to nowthe Vice-President of CSC,KP, as he is more familiarlyknown, has seen the

transformation of Baku andthe CSC yard over 11 years.

He shared of his early livingexperience in Azerbaijan, “Ilived in a four-storey buildingwithout lifts, the stairwayswere always clogged withdirt and debris, collection ofgarbage was unpredictableand there were plenty offlies. Inside the apartment,we had old and massiveRussian style furniture. Gasfor cooking and hot waterwere switched on based ona schedule from zone tozone.”

Today, things are verydifferent. Baku hasdeveloped in affluence, being an oil and gasproducing country that hasbenefited from the upwardspiral in crude oil prices. Henow stays in a very decent-sized and well-equippedservice apartment withcondominium facilities.

He recalled the teethingproblems when the yard wasjust starting out. “I had tograpple with the Russiansystem. There was nocomprehension of on-time,on budget. It took some timeto set up systems andprocedures as well as adaptto cultural, and languagedifferences when workingwith multi-nationals.

“It was a huge challenge andsubsequently a hugefulfillment to be able todeliver the 20 over projectsCSC had undertaken, on-time and on-budget.”

However, the road along theway was bumpy. He added,“Unexpected factors like theSeptember 11 terrorist attackand subsequent invasion ofAfghanistan and Iraq causedmany uncertainties.”

To overcome the challengeshe faced, he said, “Westayed calm, and stretchedour analytical, decisionmaking and diplomatic skillsto hold the team togetherand concentrated on doingour jobs well. It was vital tofoster and build relationshipwith the local governmentaland regional authoritiesto create and maintainharmonious relationshipswith the local community aswell. “

At 54 years of age, KP hasseen more than most.H o w e v e r, A z e r b a i j a ncontinues to evolve, withrapid changes to theinfrastructure, modernskyscrapers set againstRussian castles, and he iskeen for CSC to support andbe part of the growth andtransformation as well. keppelite

Barrage of funThe blistering Saturdaymorning sun did not deterKeppel Volunteers andparticipants from theAssociation for Persons withSpecial Needs (APSN) fromheading out to the MarinaBarrage for a day of fun, learning and exploration.

From the Centre for Adults(CFA), an employmentdevelopment and supportservice centre for adults

The first reservoir in thecity, the Marina Barrage isa dam spanning theMarina Channel, and willbe a new source of watersupply for S ingaporewhich also serves as floodcontrol.

Participants learnt aboutSingapore’s efforts inenvironmental sustainability,at the Sustainable SingaporeGallery (SSG) th ro u g hinnovative, attractive anduser-friendly interactivemultimedia features.

Each of the six gallerieswithin the SSG shared aunique aspect of Singapore’ssustainable efforts, showinghow a small country with
