Game for Group goals

The much awaited two-month long Inter-SBU

Games (iSBUG) finally kicked off. Getting into gear

and flexing their muscles, many Keppelites seek

to chalk up scores to win that coveted overall

challenge trophy.

But more than just fun and games, this annual

meet truly sees the Keppel core values at play and

serves as a wonderful platform for the meeting of

minds and resources amongst Keppelites across

the Group.

As Keppelites meet together to train, the

interaction promotes bonding and in the course,

allows us to better understand each other’s roles

in the group and build up stronger networks. It is

heartening to see Keppelites from all ages and all

walks, senior as well as fresh blood, get sweaty

and dirty together and show up their true colours

in different arenas.

Winning in sports requires more than brawn.

Mirroring the way we work at Keppel, we need to

form our strategy and study our competition.

The iSBUG helps keep us nimble on our toes. And

what better way to encourage the mental exercise

amongst Keppelites than to mix pressure with

pleasure.

Into its fifth year running, the iSBUG challenges its

committee members to continually inject fresh and

new ideas to draw participation. This year, the flag

design competition was introduced and Keppelites

across the Group set their creative juices flowing

to come up with icons to best represent their teams

and values.

The Games also celebrate the individual and the

team as they pursue excellence. The newly

incorporated Most Valuable Player award

recognises the contribution of each Keppelite while

team managers get the opportunity to hone their

leadership skills. But at the end of the day, when

each individual comes together to work as a team,

it is the sum total that makes a strong whole.

We see Group resources being leveraged too. This

year, with the introduction of the Vertical Marathon

at One Raffles Quay, Keppelites are made aware

of our portfolio of quality buildings and are

engaged to do their bit for the community. It will

be a run for the money, literally, to help our

adopted charity, the Association of Persons with

Special Needs.

Truly, our spirit of innovation, teamwork and

Can Do! burns bright at the iSBUG and whether

as contestant or cheerleader, every Keppelite plays

a part.

During thequarter, SRC successfully andsafely carried out a scheduledmaintenance of the 90,000barrels per day CrudeDistillation Unit No. 1Complex. The shutdown ofthe complex for 26 daysresulted in a reduction ofthroughput by 9.2% for thequarter.

Total sales volume was18.3 million barrels for 2Q2007. This was 9.4% lowerthan the 20.2 million barrelshandled in 2Q 2006, ofwhich 9.2% was partly dueto the maintenance exercise. An average realisation ofUS$70.86 per barrel wasachieved for the period, compared with the averagerealisation of US$72.04 perbarrel for the same quarterin 2006. The US$ continuedto weaken in 2007 and this, coupled with the lower salesvolume, resulted in lowersales revenue for the second

Refining margins remainedrobust during the quarter onstrong refined productsdemand from the region. TheGroup achieved an averagerefining margin of aboutUS$9.00 per barrel for thequarter. The gross profit of$237.4 million was animprovement of 7.7% over

For the first six months ofthe year, K-REIT Asia posteddistributable income of$9.5 million, up 36.8% fromthe same period last year.

This works out to adistribution per unit of3.91 cents. On an annualisedbasis, this will translate to7.88 cents.

Net property income rose23% to $13.7 million.

The improvement was dueto higher occupancies andrental rates for newand renewed leases. Thetrust’s portfolio committedoccupancy continues toclimb to 99.6% as at 30 June2007.

K-REIT Asia’s distributable incomerises 36.8% to $9.5 million

POSITIVE RENTALREVISION TRENDTO CONTINUEGiven sound economicprospects and continuedgrowth in most industries, demand for prime officespace is expected to sustain. With limited supply in theCentral Business District(CBD) expected over the nexttwo to three years, rents areexpected to rise further.

According to CB Richard Ellis, occupancy rates for Core andFringe CBD office space rosefurther to 97.3% and 96.2%respectively in 2Q2007.

With increased competitionfor space, prime office rents

rose to $10.50 psf in 2Q2007from $8.60 psf in theprevious quarter and $6.00psf a year ago.

With 70% of the portfolio’snet lettable area due forrenewal between 2007 and2010, K-REIT Asia is well-positioned to furthercapitalise on the marketupswing.

OUTLOOK FOR 2007The Ministry of Trade andIndustry estimates thatthe Singapore economyexpanded 8.2% in 2Q2007.The Singapore governmentexpects the economy torevise its current GDPforecast of 5%-7% for 2007.

Economic growth wasprimarily supported bybroad-based businessexpansion across varioussectors, particularlyconstruction, manufacturingand financial services.

With its portfolio of fourprime office buildings, namely, Keppel Towers,GE Tower, Bugis JunctionTowers and 44% ofPrudential Tower, K-REIT Asiais confident to deliver aperformance that isconsistent with the currentperiod. keppelite

There was continuing firmdemand for crude andrefined products in the firsthalf year. The CDU No. 1Complex shutdown andlower third party tradingvolume resulted in lowersales in the first half. Salesvolume handled was 6.3%lower compared to the sameperiod in 2006.

The average realisation ofUS$65.72 per barrelachieved in 1H 2007 waslower than the US$67.45 perbarrel realisation in 1H 2006.The turnover for the first half

was 13.8% lower as a resultof the lower volume andrealisation. However, theGroup was able to capitaliseon the healthy refiningmargins in the first half torecord a 15.7% increase ingross profit compared to 1H2006.

Due to procurement delays, first oil production fromOyong is now targeted to bein 2H 2007.

The Group’s income taxexpense for the first half yearwas lower due to the write-

back of deferred tax liabilitiesas a result of the lowering ofthe corporate tax rate inSingapore.

The Group achieved afirst half year PATMI of$291.3 million, an increaseof 43.1% over the sameperiod in 2006.

With this performance, theCompany will be paying aninterim dividend in August2007.

PROSPECTSRefining capacity in the

region will continue to beconstrained as new capacityhas yet to come onstream.Demand for refined productswill remain strong with theanticipated pace of regionaleconomic growth. Marginsare, therefore, expected toremain healthy for the rest ofthe year.

On exploration andproduction, SPC has steadilygrown its presence and willcontinue to increase itsexploration acreage andproduction assets. keppelite

Just the day before, Adamhad had a bad round of golfwhen he was playing with

From the rosy and smilingfaces of the otherparticipants, it looked likeeveryone enjoyed the golfchallenge too at the RafflesCountry Club. Even after thegame, they were all abuzzabout how they had to swingan accurate drive to fairwaywhere there is water aroundhole 2 and how the ironmust be high and accuratewhen there is a small greenat hole 14.

Sukaimi himself was feelingtensed but all he said to histeammates was, “Don’tworry, Sukaimi is here”. Andthat was enough to keep theteam going.

In the end, the other teamscracked under pressure andSukaimi’s team edged to awin.

Many, if not all iSBUGteam managers face thechallenge of recruitingparticipants, especiallyfemale participants. It isreally up to the teammanagers to cajole, encourage and attract theirfellow colleagues to join inthe games. Often they haveto approach potentialparticipants on a one-to-one basis to lend personalpersuasion to the cause.

Their dedication has paidoff as this year we see anincrease in the numberof participants across allgames.

Their mission also includesorganis ing t ra in ingsessions. Having said that, the team managers are notmere coordinators, theyare the heart of the team. They walk through thepreparation, the actualcompetition, the bitter and

the sweet with their teams.

I recall vividly one incidentthat happened during thegolf tournament. It wasscorching hot that day andsome participants werespotted gulping down coldwater from the cooler. I wassurprised when a voicebellowed from behind urgingthem not to drink cold waterbefore exercise as it was notgood for health and maycause stitches. Such was theconcern and care on the partof the team manager.

There was another incidentwhere one team managerasked me to send him thepictures of his participantsalthough they did not winthe top prize. Apparently,he wanted to send outvia internal email tocongratulate them.

Kudos to these teammanagers who took on

the added responsibilitydespite their heavyworkload and even whenthey are often behind thescenes. Their efforts reflectsomething about theindividual and also thecompany that supportthem in their roles.

“The understandingand co-operation frommanagement are verymuch appreciated, andI am very fortunate to havethem behind me. I enjoy itbecause I have sports inmy blood!” exclaimedAdam Goh, the teammanager of Epsilon.

Keppel is not just a placewhere you come to workand then go home. Thereis a lot more to experienceand to relate to with thecompany, and these teammanagers are at the frontline making it happen forfellow Keppelites.

Team workIntern at Keppel Group Corporate Communications, Suan Sim, enjoyed thechance to interact with some iSBUG team managers and observed first handtheir roles and responsibilities.

Rising beyond the challengeagain, Beta clinched theBadminton Trophy, albeitwith greater difficulty thistime round.

Discovering the real Shenzhen

People 37

“Someone told me before Icame to Shenzhen thateverything in China is fake, only the con-men are real,”shared Terrence Ng, AssistantHR/Admin Manager atKeppel FELS EngineeringShenzhen.

Although Shenzhen isnotorious for its imitationgoods and pickpockets,Terrence, who has spent ayear there working with thelocals, found that Shenzhenis actually populated withpolite and pleasant people.

“In fact, when my parentscame to visit, they werealways being offered seatson crowded buses andtrains,” he added.

Besides the courtesy,Terrence is equally impressedwith the locals when it comesto road traffic manners.

Despite defying traffic rules, the local motorists are veryalert and patient with oneanother and the drivers areskillful at avoiding oneanother, turning quickly intosmall lanes unscathed.

Shenzhen is one of thefastest growing cities inthe world, being a majormanufacturing centre inChina and having the busiestport in the country afterShanghai.

Terrence and his team arecurrently working on arecruitment exercise as

Keppel FELS EngineeringShenzhen plans to expandits workforce to 300.

“It has really been a greatchallenge recruiting andretaining employees as thehigh standard of living inShenzhen has resulted in thelocals leaving the city to seekhigh salaried jobs elsewhere, especially the skilledworkforce,” shared Terence.

Terence has also noted thedifferent working culture inChina and Singapore.

He shared, “Our workingculture is often regarded bythe locals as ‘strict andstressful’ compared withother companies in China, asthey are used to a slowerwork pace environment andthe reward system is usuallybased on relationships withmanagement.”

To cultivate the ‘Keppel’ spiritamong the staff, core valuecoaching and team buildingactivities are conducted. Infact, employees are proud towear their very own corevalues T-shirt.

“I felt that the team’s effortshave paid off when I sawone of our employees talkingto the doctor on our corevalues, pointing proudly tothe icons on the T-Shirt sleeve

durig his treatment for aninjury from a team buildingactivity,” said Terence.

Like many Singaporeanswho are used to converse ina mixture of English andMandarin, Terrence had toovercome the languagebarrier and get used to thelocal speaking style.

“I had a hard time speakingone full sentence inMandarin fluently when I firstarrived, especially when itcomes to technical orbusiness terms, it took me anentire day to type my firstmemo in Mandarin! Now, Ican type Mandarin as fast asI type in English,” Terencedeclared proudly.

For recreation, Terrenceworks out with a weeklyclimb to Nanshan everySunday morning, admiringthe scenery from the topand enjoying the fresh air.Otherwise, he would be onthe streets trying outdelicacies from otherprovinces and Hong Kong.

Speaking from experience,Terrence advises Keppeliteswho are thinking ofventuring into China tounderstand the local culture.

I was never a ‘sportsman’but I realise that it is nevertoo late to start being one.

On 13-17 July, in themidst of my internship atKeppel Group CorporateCommunications, I flew toHong Kong to participatein the 6th Hong KongUniversity Science andTechnology’s InternationalFencing Tournament(HKUSTIFT).

Since 1999, the Universityhas been inviting fencingteams from universitiesworldwide to compete andfor the second year, theSingapore ManagementUniversity (SMU) where Iattend school fielded a team.I was one of the privilegedfew to make the team.

M o n t h s b e f o re t h ecompetition, our trainingintens i f ied. I found i tcha l lenging to jugglebetween my internship andtrainings in the evening. Itwas not only physically tiringbut mentally draining asfencing is as much a mentalgame as a physical one.

The experience presentedmany lessons.

We may be king in ourown fencing arena, but in

Breaking through fences to winKeppel scholar, Chan Suan Sim, more fondly known as ‘Swanee’ in GroupCorporate Communications where she did her two-month internship recently, shares her experience fencing her way to international championship.

the international stage, wewill need courage andadaptability to step outof our comfort zones toface fencers from atotally different trainingbackground and work it outin a foreign environment.

The competition also servedas a platform for culturalexchange amongst thestudents. From the tall andserious fencers fromTsing Hua University to thefriendly, carefree ones fromLondon’s University College. The one thing that bondedus together was the commoninterest in fencing. For me,building ties of friendshipwith the internationalcommunity was the reward.

Bagging the women’s teamgold medal was anotherbonus. Just the day before,

I met with strong opponentsand had performed poorlyin the women’s individualevent. Embarrassing as itmay seem now, the girlshad a good cry together, disappointed.

Our male teammates wonboth the men’s individualgold and bronze and thatmade us feel the more thatwe have failed our schooland team.

But I will never forget whatmy coach told me then. Hesaid that behind everysuccessful fencer, he musthave lost and cried before. Itis only after he has learntfrom his mistakes that he willwin. The important thing isto learn from the experienceand move on.

The next day in the team

event, as if fated, I had toface the same opponent towhom I had lost previously.I pushed all fears and senseof defeat aside, focusedand scored to give my teama lead in the game. Fromthere on, I was in top formand charged my way to thegold.

It was not only a quest forglory for the school and myteam, but it was also ajourney of self discovery andchallenge. In the midst oftrying times, I was stretchedand had to rise beyond. Somy encouragement toKeppelites is to rememberthe next time you arestretched thin jugglingvarious tasks, see it as aprocess to becoming astronger and moreempowered person. keppelite

Viewers’ pulse also increasedwhen Jeffrey was tasked to

“To be able to followthrough each process fromcutting each piece of metalto welding them togetherinto a bigger structure isreally fulfilling. There is somuch to learn. Keppel

Great opportunities toimpact lives seldom comeour way, but small onessurround us every day.

Too often we under-estimatethe power of a touch, asmile, a kind word, a listeningear, an honest compliment,or the smallest act of care, all of these can make adifference, especially to theless fortunate.

Keppel Volunteers onceagain created theseopportunities by combininghealth, adventure andvolunteerism into a bikingand picnic excursion at PasirRis beach for 25 teenagestudents from the TanglinSchool.

Despite the drizzle, spiritswere high as all were eagerfor a ride of their life.

The one-hour journey tookthe cyclists past wideexpanse of vegetation, views of sailboats out at seaand sea birds along theboardwalks.

There were parts of the ride

where it was peacefulwhile others were filledwith bustling laughter andactivities amongst the youthsand picnicking families.

More than the activity andfood, it was the companythat made the difference. What Keppel Volunteersadded to brighten the daywas the human touch. Smallgestures as they were, theinteraction helped to developthe students’ social skills andenrich their life experiences.

“It was a relaxing andmeaningful event thatd e m o n s t r a t e d m u c hteamwork and rapport. Thestudents needed our attentionand encouragement and wewere happy to show them thatthere are people like us whocare,” said Andrew Tan,Keppel Volunteer from KeppelShipyard.
