How can you improve fuel efficiencywithout sacrificing performance? Spec the Kenworth T270 Hybrid.

The Kenworth® T270 Class 6 medium-duty conventional – equipped with the new PACCAR PX-6 engine and the patented Eaton® hybrid electric system – can improve fuel economy by up to 30% in start-and-stop applications without sacrifices in performance or reliability. And the more stops and starts you make, the greater the benefit.

During steady driving conditions, the T270 hybrid operates like a standarddiesel vehicle with almost all the power coming from the engine. In typical city driving conditions, it uses a combination of diesel and electricpower – seamlessly switching between the two modes of operation. Andwhen braking occurs, the hybrid system uses the regenerative brakingfeature to capture and store the energy and provides it later when driversneed an extra boost for climbing hills or just a little extra acceleration.

Fleets that spend a lot of time powering a bucket truck or other PTO-driven devices can spec the T270 hybrid with an electric power takeoff (e-PTO) option. This function greatly reduces fuel consumption and emissions, by using stored battery power, instead of engine power. As the hybrid batteries are depleted, the engine automatically restartsand recharges the battery, typically in less than five minutes. And sincethere’s no noise with electricity, the system is also a big hit with thewhole neighborhood.

So whether you’re running a utility fleet – or you make your living in thepick-up and delivery business – the T270 hybrid is designed to make apositive impact on both your bottom line and the environment.

RN Industries

Recession? Housing slump? Energy crisis? Not in therugged and remote Unitah Basin of northeastern Utah. The energy fields here are humming. That’s good newsfor RN Industries (RNI) in Roosevelt, Utah.

Founded in 2000 to haul water for the drilling rigs,RNI’s fleet has grown rapidly to more than 240trucks, mostly Kenworth T800s.

RNI president Roger Chapman prefers Kenworth T800sfor their quality, durability and resale value.

“We look at the cost of owning trucks long term, not justshort term,” says Chapman, whose fleet operates mostlyin harsh mountainous terrain where the gas fields arelocated. As natural gas is pumped out of the ground, itbrings with it briny water that has to be properly dis-posed. RNI’s water vacuum trucks haul the wastewater todesignated facilities.

“The T800 is our workhorse,” says Chapman. “ThoseKenworth cabs hold together in rust-service applicationsbetter than anything we have ever tried.”

Less downtime, more on-timeThanks to new technologies that didn’t exist 15 years ago,Utah’s natural gas industry is growing rapidly. Nowdrillers can get more gas out of the ground safely while

drilling wells much closer together. As the

drilling rigs have multiplied, so has the number of RNItrucks. Last year, more than 130 new Kenworth truckswere purchased by RNI, with 60 more T800s currently onorder for 2008.

Quality and durability are key factors in truck selectionbecause of the severe environment in the oil fields.Chapman’s business philosophy has been to consolidatetruck purchases around the best piece of equipment, andenjoy the benefits of less downtime and lower cost opera-tions. With Kenworth T800s spec’d with 500-to-600 hpengines and 18-speed transmissions, RNI has been able

to meet the growing demand for wastewater removal byproviding consistent, on-time service under extreme con-ditions.

Unbeatable service and supportTo help assure continuous uptime for his fleet, Chapmanespecially appreciates the extraordinary support he getsfrom his dealer, Kenworth Sales Company of Salt LakeCity.

“We’re remote and an official Kenworth fleet warrantycenter, so we do most of our own maintenance and war-ranty work,” says Chapman. “Our dealer serves us with aparts person who drives out here several times each week. We’re two-and-a-half-hours drive from Salt Lake, so it’squite a long way. We couldn’t ask for better service.”

Having a new fleet of Kenworth T800s alsohelps recruit and retain top drivers in ahighly competitive market. “Drivers like the

T800s,” he says. “We gain and retain a lot of gooddrivers because of the equipment we operate.”

What’s the best thing about owning Kenworth T800s?“Resale value — Kenworth has the best in the industry,”says Chapman, who has plenty of buyers but too fewtrucks that he’s willing to part with. “Every year we ordermore trucks thinking we’ll trade some in. But every yearwe have grown that much more and needed that manymore units. So we haven’t had the opportunity to tradethem. Eventually we want to get to a five-year trade-incycle, but not yet.”

Till then, RNI’s oldest T800s continue to perform well.

QLFTransportation

Quality Liquid Feed (QLF) in Dodgeville, Wis., has pro-vided supplemental liquid feed for livestock all across theUnited State since 1977. To help support the company’sfar-flung operations, QLF Transportation was formed in1999. Starting with just 12 trucks, the fleet has sincegrown to more than 75 trucks, mostly Kenworths.

In the spring of 2007, QLF Transportation became anearly adopter of the Kenworth T660 andpurchased 16 new trucks. Since then, the

T660 has proven itself to QLF drivers andmanagement for its exceptional reliability,

comfort and fuel efficiency. This year, the company hasordered 15 more T660s.

Reliability and comfort“In our business, uptime is absolutely critical,” saysStuart Sliter, vice president of QLF Transportation. “Wemaximize every driver, every truck, every minute of everyday. If we hiccup, it puts a real wrinkle in our dispatch. The T660 has been a reliable working truck for us.”

For QLF drivers who spend much of their time onunpaved roads, in all kinds of weather, the performanceand comfort of the Kenworth T660 makes a big differ-ence in productivity and job satisfaction.

“The Kenworth T660 holds the road, drivessmoothly, has great torque, visibility, handling, all those things,” Sliter says. “It’s just a goodworking truck, and it rides like a dream.Drivers really like the T660.”

Interior comfort is especially importantto QLF drivers. “In other trucks we’veowned, stuff inside the cab cracksand breaks, rattles and squeaks,”Sliter says. “That doesn’t happen inthe Kenworths. The seats and doorsare all cushioned and stitched, andthe doors shut tightly. It’s really a nice, quiet, smooth ride.”

Along with exceptional fit and finish, QLF’s KenworthT660s are spec’d with 62-inch AeroCab® FlatTop sleepersand Diamond Interiors.

Enhanced productivity and fuel efficiencyProductivity is enhanced even further with the KenworthDriver Information Center, which helps Sliter separate idletime, PTO (power take-off) running time and driving time.“Because we use PTOs to operate the liquid feed pumps, now we can determine exactly how much fuel our PTOsare using.” With a clearer picture of all-round fuel usage,Sliter says, “We’re getting up to 7.2 mpg in our T660s.”

Better fuel mileage is whatattracted Sliter to the KenworthT660 in the first place. “Theaerodynamics really impress me,”

he says. To improve fuel efficiency even more, he spec’dthe T660s with 430 hp engines, 13-speed transmissionsand lightweight components such as composite springs, underneath mufflers and 100-gallon fuel tanks.

With 10 QLF plants located in 10 different states, thecompany’s fleet is dispersed. Drivers live in the regionsthey serve, so maintenance is handled through KenworthPremierCare® and the nationwide network of Kenworthdealers. “We get really good service,” says Sliter, who pur-chases his trucks from Wisconsin Kenworth in Madison.“Kenworth views our business as a true partnership.

“Plus,” adds Sliter, “we trade our trucks at 500,000 milesand get top resale. The Kenworths keep their value.”

Bonneville Transloaders, Inc.

Bonneville Transloaders, Inc. (BTI) was founded in 1985to haul soda ash from the Green River Basin in southwest-ern Wyoming to the company’s truck-to-rail transloadingfacility in Bonneville, Wyoming, 200 miles to the north.

Over the years, BTI has diversified and expanded its opera-tions, growing its fleet to more than 130 Kenworth W900s.Today, the company hauls tankers and multi-axle trailersfilled with everything from soda ash and coal to ammoni-um nitrate and compressed CO2. On specially equipped14-axle trailers, payloads routinely reach 52 tons.

Driver comfort is paramount“All the oil and energy fields in this region are booming, sothere’s a very competitive market for experienced drivers,”says Clair Anderson, president of BTI. “We have to doeverything we can to keep good drivers. Having top qualityequipment makes a big difference.”

From Utah’s canyon lands to the farthest mountains ofColorado and Wyoming, BTI drivers cover some of the

most remote terrain in the western states. “These placesare as extreme as you would ever want to experience in atruck, some as far as 50 miles off road, one way,” saysAnderson. “The Kenworth W900 is built higher off theground and gives us better clearance for off-road work. Our drivers are out there day after day, all year round.Without good equipment, they definitelywould not stay here.”

Pointing to the beautiful but hostilelandscape where weather often plays the biggest factor,Anderson says, “We have to have a good truck that’s wellput together, with a tight-fitting cab, that keeps the guyswarm in the winter and cool in the summer.”

While half the BTI fleet is equipped with day cabs, theother half is spec’d with 72-inch AeroCab®FlatTopsleepers. “A quality sleeper is a real big deal for us,” saysAnderson. “It’s what these guys call home when they’reout there in the elements.”

Durable, versatile workhorse“There are a lot of factors that go into providinga durable truck that drivers feel comfortable in,”says Anderson, who specs his W900s with 500to 600 hp engines, 18-speed transmissions,46,000 to 52,000-lb rear ends and 3.55 gearratios.

“We spec them heavy, which adds to their dura-bility, reliability and versatility. Because we doquite a bit of work for Praxair (a global leader inthe industrial gases industry), we have specialset-ups to pull tanker trailers. We have blowersfor the pneumatics and wet kits. The W900 isjust a good, all-around tractor for every applica-tion we have.”

After five or six years of tough service, the com-pany resells its Kenworth W900s. “We averageabout 1.5 million miles per truck,” saysAnderson. “Even with high miles, we get realgood resale value. Our W900s are in highdemand because they ride better and last longer. You can see our old trucks still in operation justabout anywhere you go in Wyoming.”

Erion Racing

A formidable team with a winning tradition, ErionRacing competes on the highly competitive MotorcycleSuperbike Racing Circuit. As the team travels aroundthe country, it wants to project the same winning imagedriving into the racetrack that it demonstrates on theracetrack.

“Ours is a very high profile, high visibility and image-driven business,” says Kevin Erion, president of ErionRacing, headquartered in Orange, Calif. “Our KenworthT2000s fit the image profile perfectly, with both cuttingedge technological features and sleek aerodynamic

design.”

When the team’s first Kenworth T2000 arrived on thecircuit in 2001, other teams and sponsors took notice.Says Erion, “I soon realized there were other high visibili-ty companies involved in racing that also wanted to pro-ject a good image with a quality truck, but they didn’tnecessarily want to own a truck. So I thought, if I couldoperate one truck, why not two, four or six? That wasthe beginning of my trucking business.”

Quality image, performance and comfortAs more customers signed on, Erion incorporated histruck leasing company and christened it RiLauJa, anacronym for his three daughters Riley, Lauren and Jamie. All of RiLauJa LLC’s clients are involved in racing, saysErion, who has expanded his fleet to seven trucks — allT2000s — each one specially spec’d for individual cus-tomers.

“Some of my trucks have automatic transmissionsbecause the clients prefer them,” Erion says.“Some have bigger engines. The only thing that Ihave standardized on is the Kenworth T2000because of its performance design.

“Everyone who drives for me says it’s thebest truck they have ever driven. There’snot one specific thing that they point to

and say ‘that’s what I like most about the truck,’because everything about the Kenworth T2000 is quality. It’s comfortable, roomy and smooth riding. Drivers lovethem.”

With 75-inch AERODYNE® Sleepers and Diamond VITInteriors on his latest purchases, Erion’s drivers enjoygreat comfort in over-the-road trucking. Spec’ing highquality interiors has an added advantage at trade-intime, says Erion. “There’s a good market for Kenworths, especially with low mileage and pristine interiors, and wekeep our interiors immaculate.”

Erion plans to trade his T2000s after six years of service,or about 300,000 miles. The oldest truck currently hasonly 240,000 miles. “Our trucks arrive at the race trackand sit there for two or three days,” he says, pointing outthat each truck puts on only 40,000 miles annually. “Ourmost important measurement is customer satisfaction. We cater to whatever our racing clients need with a sortof a la carte service. Some need a tractor and driver, so Iprovide both. Others have their own drivers.”

With such a strong customer service orientation, it’s nowonder Erion appreciates his Kenworth dealer, InlandKenworth of Fontana, Calif. “Those guys take care of melike I buy 100 trucks a year,” he says. “It’s amazing theservice I get. It’s so enjoyable doing business with agroup of people who treat me like I’m their No. 1 cus-tomer. That’s exactly how I try to treat my customers.”

Perkins SpecializedTransportationHauling

Perkins Specialized Transportation Hauling, Northfield,Minn., is a 50-year-old company providing long distancetransport for super loads. Typical hauls include giant boil-ers, super trusses and nuclear reactor vessels. With a longlist of prominent customers, Perkins relies on its engineer-ing expertise, decades of experience and Kenworth C500sto get the job done right.

Moving a giant boiler that’s 22 feet in diameter fromWyoming to Northern Alberta “puts us intoall the power lines,” says Neil Perkins, presi-

dent of the company. “There are almost no bridges thatthe load can get under, no railroad signals it can getthrough. It’s heavy, so it requires dual trailers under it,which takes up both sides of the roadways.”

When hauling something this large, more work goes intoengineering and administration than into the actual oper-ations, says Perkins. “There are literally hundreds of pagesof permits — states, counties, cities, utility companies.Everything we do is engineered. Every load is detailed, andevery detail is drawn up.”

With plans finalized, the job of actually moving mega-sized loads goes to skilled drivers and Kenworth C500s.“In terms of dollars and cents, the numbers are just toobig, so it’s critical that our equipment doesn’t breakdown,” says Perkins. “When we’re hauling the main switchto a nuclear power plant, a delay might mean one milliondollars a day in lost

revenue to the utility company. We have to have trucksand drivers capable of doing the work.”

Engineered to perfectionThe company has developed a unique heavy-haul philoso-phy using Kenworth C500s spec’d with planetary drive axles, automatic transmissions and less horsepower than youmight think. Rather than employing big 600-plus hpengines, Perkins uses smaller engines (480 hp), highertorque and multiple trucks to move huge loads easily with-out jerking or jumping upon take off. Additionally, the 5.56rears deliver excellent start and gradeability without puttingstress on either trucks or loads. And because the front endof the C500 has a through frame, the trucks are used asoften for pushing as for pulling, a key to Perkins’ success.

Highly trained and experienced drivers, many with20-plus years of service at the company, keep the

super loads moving on schedule. “Good drivers demandgood equipment,” says Perkins. “Our drivers like Kenworthbecause the C500 is a very specialized piece of equipment. The frame goes all the way through and sticks out thefront for all our front-end attachments.

“Other manufacturers have elected not even to participatein this specialized market, but Kenworth is committed toour market and our success. The company is willing to sitdown with us, do design work and get into the detailsabout what works best for our operation. Rihm Kenworth, our dealer in Minnesota, has made itself very knowledge-able, too, in heavy-duty tractors, and we rely on them tohelp us spec out our trucks.”

With so much specialized equipment, knowledge andattention to detail, Perkins has earned a reputation forexcellence in the heavy-haul industry. The company haswon multiple awards over many years, a reflection of itsongoing dedication to the highest industry standards. Nowonder Perkins chooses Kenworth to help carry the load.

Over the past 15 years, Solotech has supplied thetechnical equipment for major world expos suchas Seville in Spain, Hanover in Germany and Aichiin Japan. The company provides hardware andexpertise for television production companies, touring bands, outdoor festivals and indoorshow events of all kinds.

“Our lighting, projections and sound systemswow audiences all over the world,” says GillesDeguire, transport director at Solotech. “We haveto deliver on time. If we have a delay or a truckbroken down on the side of the road, it can bedisastrous. We simply cannot risk it. That’s why we ownKenworth trucks.”

Extreme durabilityIn eastern Canada, Solotech maintains a fleet of 15trucks, mostly Kenworths. In January, the company tookpossession of four new Kenworth T170 Class 5 models.“These new trucks were thrown right into our harshCanadian winter,” says Deguire. “I can tell you they han-dle very well in snow, slush and ice.”

Two new T170s serve Montreal, while the other twotrucks serve the rest of the Quebec market. When decid-ing to purchase the Kenworth T170s, Deguire wanted —first and foremost — an extremely durable truck that iscomfortable to drive, highly maneuverable and can oper-ate nimbly in an urban environment for a long, longtime.

“Here, we don’t trade ourtrucks after three or fouryears; we drive them forever,” says Deguire. “Kenworthtrucks are constructed so much better, and that’s impor-tant to us. We want the longest lasting truck we canfind.”

Reliable performance for urban operationsSolotech’s trucks average about 100,000 km (60,000miles) per year. “Ninety percent of those kilometers is in

city traffic,” Deguire says. “Our trucks run all day makingdeliveries to shows, hotels, festivals and so on. Theyoperate seven days a week, day and night. We can’tafford delays, breakdowns or unreliable trucks.”

With just three months of service on his new KenworthT170s, Deguire says he already sees a trend.

“Our drivers are very happy with the T170s,” he says.“The visibility is great and the power is excellent for citydriving.”

Solotech’s T170s are spec’d with PACCAR PX-6 enginesand Allison 5-speed automatic transmissions. “That’s areally good transmission, really smooth,”says Deguire. “It doesn’t kick out betweenspeeds and has a lot of torque.”

Since purchasing its first Kenworth truck in 1995 — aT600 still in operation — Solotech has worked withKenworth Montreal to handle all its maintenance needs.“It’s a pleasure working with Kenworth,” says Deguire.“They have a very stable and reliable staff, so I know Iam in good hands. They understand our business andwhenever a truck goes in for service, they know we needit back quickly. They always take care of us.”

BMC West is always seeking ways to deliver products moreefficiently while conserving fuel. So, the company jumpedat the opportunity to become one of the first fleets inNorth America to operate Kenworth’s new medium dutyhybrid-electric trucks.

“It was an easy decision to partner with Kenworth on thisvehicle,” says Brian Gable, Boise, Idaho-based fleet man-ager for BMC West, which has provided homebuildersand “do-it-yourselfers” with lumber and building sup-plies since 1987. “With over a thousand trucks in ourfleet, Kenworth’s medium duty hybrid design has thepotential to conserve a lot of fuel, and save resourcesand costs, which helps our company, customers and com-munities. It’s just one more way we can be smarter abouthow we do the job, and help everyone along the way. Plus,it reduces our carbon footprint, which is valuable to ourgreen building partners.”

The Kenworth medium duty hybrid truck is proving effec-tive as it serves the greater Seattle area from BMC West’soperation in Issaquah, Wash. Gable already reports a sig-nificant improvement in fuel economy compared to a sim-

ilarly spec’d Kenworth T300, and the fuel savings could goeven higher with more in-city routes and less freeway time.

“There is a lot of potential at BMC West for hybrid tech-nology as more and more of our delivery routes arethrough suburban areas with a lot of stop-and-go activi-ty,” says Gable. “That’s where the Kenworth medium dutyhybrid really shines.”

BMCWest Benefits From Kenworth Medium Duty Hybrid Truck

Kenworth Hybrid Utility Truck Enhances Fuel Economy for King CountyKenworth Truck Company’smedium duty, hybrid-electrictruck for utility operations in ser-vice with King County inWashington state is providingpositive environmental results.

“King County has taken a leader-ship role in adopting new tech-nologies that can reduce fuel con-sumption and greenhouse gasemissions,” says HaroldTaniguchi, director of the KingCounty Department ofTransportation. “We’re pleasedthat the county’s new Kenworthmedium duty hybrid is exceedingour expectations in fuel economy, performance and driveracceptance.”

Located in the greater Seattle metropolitan area, KingCounty covers more than 2,100 square miles and is thenation’s 13th most populous county. The King County

Department of Transportation, which became the first govern-ment agency to place the newKenworth hybrid into service, uses its new Kenworth Class 7hybrid to maintain traffic signals. The hybrid is equipped with autility bucket atop a 50-footboom, which is longer than astandard aerial lift. While a non-hybrid utility truck must idle tooperate its lift, the hybrid’s lifttypically operates on electricpower, which reduces emissions.

“We’ve logged a little over 5,000miles as of the first of this year

and the Kenworth hybrid has already achieved a 25 percentreduction in fuel consumption over a comparably equippedconventional model,” says King County FleetAdministration Division Director Windell Mitchell, whoexpects to attain a 30 percent or more improvement in fueleconomy as the truck is further broken in by the county.

Enhanced driver comfort, fuel efficiency and technologyare among the benefits received by Transport Bourassa, which was one of the first fleets in North America tooperate the new Kenworth T660 with the popularKenworth Extended Day Cab option.

Transport Bourassa, a less-than-truckload carrier nearMontreal, believes it bought a winner and has praise forthe Kenworth T660 Extended Day Cab after severalmonths of operation. The spacious Kenworth ExtendedDay Cab provides an additional 6 inches of length to thestandard T660 day cab’s 122-inch BBC (front bumper toback of the cab) and 5 additional inches of cab height.

Eric Levesque, a Transport Bourassa driver in the QuebecCity area, says the T660 Extended Day Cab is the besttruck he’s driven in almost six years with the fleet. “Theturning radius and visibility are very good for the deliverystops I make,” Levesque says. “The extra room in the cabgives me plenty of space for keeping my paperwork, safetyhat and other equipment. Other drivers see my truck andask if I want to trade. I tell them ‘no way.’ ”

Serge Bergeron (below), Transport Bourassa fleet manag-er, praises the Kenworth T660’s aerodynamic styling, which provides enhanced fuel efficiency compared to hisother trucks, and the vehicle’s image, maneuverability, and ease of service.

Kenworth T660 Extended Day Cab Offers Comfort, Efficiency andTechnology for Transport Bourassa

“Give him an inch and he’ll take a mile.” That old sayingjust might be true when describing reaction to Kenworth’sT660 Extended Day Cab. When inches of more spacecount for improved drivercomfort, drivers of BLMTransportation Group’s cityfleet are praising the bene-fits of more space — whereevery inch of room andstorage space add up tomiles of comfort.

“Many of our drivers are bigguys and having additionalspace in the cab is extremelyimportant to them on thejob,” says James McConnell, president and owner of theKitchener, Ontario-based truckload and less-than-truck-load carrier. “In the T660 Extended Day Cab, they nowhave extra room to store their personal possessions andequipment. Unlike other day cabs that are tight on space, this is one day cab that doesn’t skimp on roominess and

features. Our drivers couldn’t wait to get out of theirother trucks and into the T660s.”

“The extra space is great, and theKenworth T660 is the best ridingtruck we’ve ever had,” says JohnMcTaggart, a BLM driver for about15 years. “It rides smoother than aCadillac. I also have plenty of storageroom for my hard hat, safety bootsand vest.”

Brian Dernesch, BLM president offleet operations, says the T660’smaneuverability comes in handy dur-ing in-city deliveries. “The truck’stight turning radius makes it easierfor our drivers to get in and out of

congested shipping yards. The look, quiet interior, morelight from the headlamps and how the trucks perform outon the road have impressed our drivers. Plus, we madethe changeover from our previous trucks because of theKenworth resale value and service network on the road.”

Heavy Haul

The new aerodynamic Kenworth T660 offers somethingJones Heavy Hauling can’t get from its other trucks — supe-rior fuel economy coupled with higher payload capacity.

Jones Heavy Hauling, which has been in business for morethan 40 years, changed its focus from regional to nation-wide hauling when current owners Chuck Fowler, LarryEzell and Jack Engkeles purchased the company in 1999.Fowler said the professionalism of the sales and servicestaff at MHC Kenworth - Little Rock, coupled with the reli-ability and durability of Kenworth trucks, convinced himand his partners to operate Kenworth trucks. According toFowler, hauling loads across the country makes fuel econo-my a big consideration in choosing which Kenworth truckmodels to operate.

“A lot of guys involved in heavy hauling have asked me whyour company chose an aerodynamic model,” says JasonCook, driver of the first T660 for Little Rock, Ark.-basedJones Heavy Hauling. “I tell them just take a look at themileage I’m getting with this new Kenworth T660 andyou’ll know why.”

With less than 50,000 miles on its 525-hp engine, Fowlersays Cook’s T660 already gets 1 mpg more than the fleet’saverage using other trucks. At that rate, the KenworthT660 will save Jones Heavy Hauling about $9,000 per year.In addition, Fowler says running the T660 enables Cook tohaul 700 more pounds of freight on each trip.

Kenworth T660 Helps Jones Heavy Hauling Save Money on Fuel Costs,Pull More Payload

Owner-operator Mikhail Lesko hasenjoyed significant fuel savings withhis new aerodynamic KenworthT660.

“I get about 6 percent better fuelmileage with my KenworthT660,” the Missoula-basedheavy hauler says, comparinghis new T660 to his previoustruck. “At that rate, I’ll savetwo months’ worth of truckpayments after one year.”

Lesko contracts to Firkins TruckingCompany, a heavy hauler based in nearby Corvallis,Mont., which specializes in moving lumber building sup-plies, heavy equipment and grain all over the Northwestand across the United States. Lesko says comfort was acrucial factor when he chose his new truck since he rou-tinely drives over mountain passes in Montana, Idaho, andWashington, logging in about 12,000 miles per month.

Lesko’s T660 features the spa-cious Kenworth Diamond cabinterior with proprietary seatsand armrests that can be fold-ed away behind the seats. Thisinterior provides Lesko with 4inches of additional spacebetween the driver seat and thepassenger seat. His T660 alsosports a 72-inch AeroCab®

AERODYNE® sleeper. The extraroom in the cab and largesleeper makes for a more com-fortable work environment,Lesko added.

Lesko chose to buy a 2008 Kenworth T660 equipped witha new 2007 engine. “I’m glad I did it,” Lesko says. “Nowthat I’ve run it for a while, I’m getting the best mileage I’veever had and I’m proud to be doing something good forthe environment by running a truck with a cleaner burningengine.”

Vocational Trucks

With carefully spec’d Kenworth trucks, drivers forfamily-owned and operated Pineview Trucking andExcavating Ltd. can haul logs an extra three weekseach season and make more money.

“We use the Kenworth T800 because it’s a strong, durable truck that’s engineered to handle what weput it through,” says Steve Vohar, general managerfor Pineview. “It offers us the degree of reliabilitywe need, but also the versatility to run on-roadand off.”

Pineview primarily hauls logs for Dunkley Lumber in thePrince George area located in the heart of timber countryin central British Columbia. With the help and expertadvice of its Kenworth dealer — Inland Kenworth in PrinceGeorge — Pineview specs each Kenworth T800 with a tri-dem drive for extra traction, a lower gear ratio, a highhorsepower engine and air ride suspensions, which arerequired by the provincial government with tridem drives. With properly spec’d Kenworth trucks, company driverscan haul logs out of the bush two weeks sooner and con-

tinue hauling a week longer than drivers from other truck-ing companies.

“If we didn’t have Kenworth trucks with the right specs,we just couldn’t do the job, our trucks would come backbroken all the time,” Vohar said. “There are a lot of guyswho try and spec lighter trucks so that they can haulmore logs, but they end up broken down on the side ofthe road. Dunkley Lumber pays us to keep their mill sup-plied with logs, not to be sitting on the side of the road.”

Kenworth Clean Power

It’s not surprising that Spirit Truck Lines caters to the needsof its drivers with high quality and comfortable Kenworthtrucks, while keeping an eye on low operating costs and highfuel mileage. After all, this successful family business wasfounded in 1990 by the five Garza brothers, all once drivers, who have trucking in their blood dating back to 1925 whenEulalio Garza, their father, bought his first truck.

Based in San Juan, Texas, near the Mexican border, SpiritTruck Lines runs dry vans in all lower 48 states and also ser-

vices Mexico andCanada. The fleetis up to 200Kenworth trucksand continues toexpand as busi-ness grows. Thelatest move by thecompany’s own-ers — brothers David, Johnny, Leonel, Ramiro and Raul

Garza — is the addition of 50 KenworthT660s with 72-inch AeroCab® sleepersand the Kenworth Clean Power® no-idlesystem, which is fully compliant with theCalifornia Air Resources Board’s newidling regulations for 2008.

With the move to Kenworth T660s, pur-chased from French-Ellison Kenworth inPharr, Texas, Spirit Truck Lines has a fac-tory-installed idle reduction option thatworks best for their company, accordingto David Garza, who oversees the fleet’sservice operations.

“It’s been a great decision,” says Garza.“We looked at APUs (auxiliary powerunits), but decided we didn’t want todeal with another engine. KenworthClean Power really makes sense with itsbattery system for cooling and AC powerand fuel-fired heater. The system is quietand efficient, and there is zero mainte-nance compared to an APU. I’ve hadmany drivers comment how they get agreat night’s sleep because they don’thave to deal with an APU kicking on inthe middle of the night.”

While Spirit drivers have been happywith the performance, idling has beendecreased as much as 90 percent on thefirst T660s with Kenworth Clean Powerput into service. “Obviously, with dieselcosting more than $3 a gallon, we’reinterested in saving money through idlereduction,” says Garza. “We had a fleetidle average in the low 40 percent range. The first ‘no-idle’ trucks that we’vechecked with Kenworth Clean Powerrange from 3 to 6 percent in idle time.”

Kenworth Clean Power

The aerodynamic Kenworth T660 equipped with the newno-idle Kenworth Clean Power® system offers a Kentucky-based heavy hauler and a Canadian commodities trans-portation company a distinct advantage over their com-petitors, according to officials from the two fleets.

Shepherdsville, Ky.-based Hill Transportation Service Inc.and Cambridge, Ontario-based Sharp TransportationSystems recently put into service a combined 25 newKenworth T660s with 72-inch AeroCab® sleepers andKenworth Clean Power. The system helps reduce fuelcosts, provides drivers with a quieter and more comfort-able work environment, and bolstersgreen strategies for operating moreenvironmentally-friendly trucks. Thataids efforts to compete in a marketwhere fleets are chasing after fewerqualified drivers and shipments.

Billy Hill, owner of Hill TransportationService, says operating 20 new, aerody-namic Kenworth T660s with KenworthClean Power has already produced fueleconomy that is almost 15 percenthigher than the fleet’s average. Heanticipates that the T660s will improvefuel economy by 1 mpg above the cur-rent average, as the new engines getbroken in — excellent fuel mileage for aheavy hauler, he says.

Sharp Transportation operates fiveKenworth T660s spec’d with the facto-ry-installed Kenworth Clean Power sys-tem as a key part of its efforts to con-trol costs and attract and retain drivers, according to Shawn Baird, theCanadian fleet’s sales manager. Thecompany serves many Fortune 500

companies and,so far, the T660sand KenworthClean Power havegenerated a 7percent — or one-half mpg — fueleconomyimprovementover the compa-ny’s fleet averageof 7 mpg (U.S.).

Fully Compliantwith CARB RegulationsKenworth Clean Power is fully compliantwith California Air Resources Board(CARB) idling regulations that went intoeffect January 1, 2008, for sleeper truckswith 2007 and later model engines.

CARB’s new regulatory measuresexpand the 5-minute idling limit forheavy duty vehicles to include sleeperberth trucks, ending their exemption toidle the engine during periods of sleepand rest. CARB’s heavy duty vehicleidling emission reduction program alsosets requirements for anti-idling tech-nologies, including auxiliary power units(APUs) and fuel-operated heaters. Boththe idling and emission regulationsapply to heavy duty trucks operating inCalifornia, whether or not they are regis-tered in the state.
