e believeKenworth providesthe “World’s Best”trucks. Regardlessof whether you aretalking to one ofour employees inan assembly plant, call center,or our Sales orga-nization, they will tell you that we aren’tsatisfied with anything less than being theWorld’s Best.

“The World’s Best”can also be measured inpractical terms - like resale value. In this issueyou’ll read how Brian Kurtz of Brian KurtzTrucking reports real returns of up to $10,000more than he sees for competitive trucks com-parable to his Kenworth T600s.Another articleon Frock Bros.Trucking reports that outstand-ing resale value keeps them coming back toKenworth (page 18).

J.D. Power and Associates (page 13) knowsa lot about measurement. They recently rankedKenworth trucks, including the T800,T600,andW900, among those providing the highestHeavy-Duty Truck Customer Satisfaction.*

Innovation is something that is more diffi-cult to measure, but customers are still able torecognize it when they see it. For Valerie Art-meier of Artmeier Trucking, the new extendedday cab is an example of the innovative prod-ucts that keep her buying Kenworth (page 30).

Other customers, like owner-operatorKenny Blanton, indicate the image presentedby his premium Kenworth W900L is a key rea-son he draws driver awards and top-payingmoving jobs.

“To be the best, you have to run the best,”says Blanton.

It seems that Kenny measures his success interm of being the World’s Best as well.

s there a secret to Kenny Blanton’s success in the mov-ing business?

Sure,but a secret’s hard to keep if it’s a gleaming Ken-worth W900 with an 86-inch Studio AeroCab® Sleeper.

Nonetheless, the owner-operator hailing from Modesto,Calif., credits his W900 as being a key part of the packagethat has earned him a comfortable living and a host ofaccolades. These include a national driver of the year nom-ination, several driver of the month awards from hisemployer, United Van Lines agent McCollister’s Trans-portation, and a wall full of letters and commendationsfrom customers and business associates alike.

Blanton’s reputation has also earned him the premiummoving jobs brokered by the company. When a CEO, celebrity or other VIPcontracts a move with McCollister’s, thecompany makes a point of ensuringBlanton and his W900 get the job.

“They call me the best, I guess,” saysBlanton, who knows how to back up

the label that has been given him not only by operatingpremium equipment, but by employing an innovativeresale strategy and insisting that his help and his own per-formance measure up to high standards of excellence.

Long historyBlanton is a strapping 62-year-old grandfather of six

who claims never to have lost an arm-wrestling match, and would certainly appear to be at least a few years awayfrom his first defeat. He came into trucking in the mid1980s when work had begun to dry up for the journey-man carpenter based in San Francisco, but his brother hadhooked up with Mayflower Transit and encouraged Blan-ton to do the same. Blanton followed his brother’s pathand soon found himself the proud owner of a near-newKenworth T600 that had been run for just nine monthsby its previous owner.

“It still had that new truck smell,” recalls Blanton. “Igot to liking that smell.”

Only two years later, Blanton traded his T600 for a newone, establishing a two-year trade pattern that would helppave his way to the top of the business. By 1996, Blantonlearned that applying the same trade cycle to ownershipof a W900 would further maximize his payback. Hereports regular returns of about 80 percent of theoriginal purchase price trading his W900s after25 months and about 330,000 miles.

“It’s simply the best reselling truck thereis,” says Blanton. “I firmly believe that, because it’s such a fine truck. And it’s workedout that I have about $40,000 equity inthe truck. All

Blanton’s eye for new, high-quality equipment did notgo unnoticed by his employers, who knew Blanton’s well-maintained, low-mileage W900s faced little chance ofbreakdown on a high-profile job.

“We’ll get a national account for a company, and I’llmove the president or CEO of that company,” saysBlanton. “Why? Because if something goes wrong withthe president’s move, we’re in danger of losing thewhole account.

“The people at McCollister’s know what my equipmentlooks like, know that it’s nearly new and know how I amabout maintenance. That’s why they give me the high-dol-lar, high-profile jobs.”

Quality helpAs any mover knows, the business is about far more

than getting a truckload from point to point. Consistentwith his commitment to quality equipment, Blanton alsoinsists on quality help.

“I’ll book my help with either the origin agent or thedestination agent well in advance. I’ll tell them thatthey have to be clean, they have to be in uniformand they have to be experienced packers andloaders.”

Given his clientele, Blanton knowshe can’t afford a slip-up,either on his account orthat of his hired help.

“I don’t know

what ‘late’ means,”he says.“I’ve never been late and I don’tintend to ever be late due to an equipment breakdown orany other reason. By running these new W900s, I don’tintend for it to happen. Ever.” K

Kenny Blanton (opposite page) says he maximizes hisinvestment on his W900L (shown here) by employingan innovative resale strategy.

Studio AeroCab Offers Big ComfortKenny Blanton stands 6-foot, 31/2 inches tall — and does so in his Studio

AeroCab®, with headroom to spare.“There’s plenty of room,” says Blanton, who spends all his nights on the

road in the sleeper and only occasionally sleeps in a motel if his wife travelswith him. Even then, they’ll spend two out of three nights in the sleeper, heestimates.

“It’s very comfortable for both of us,”he says.“The couch folds out into a nicebed and there’s an extra bunk that folds out above if we need it, too.”

Blanton is also impressed with the storage closets in the sleeper. Not onlycan he pack clothing and food for himself on trips of three weeks or more,he’ll also bring spare uniforms along in case some of his hired destination helpfails to show up in proper attire.

“Appearance is very important in this business,” he says. “That goes for notonly you and your labor, but your equipment too.”

tep into the lobby at Terpening Trucking in Syra-cuse,N.Y., and you’ll be treated to a pictorial historyof the quintessential American trucking company.

There’s a vintage, framed photo of the old original milktruck that Charles A. Terpening used when he started thebusiness in 1916.Little did he know that through four gen-erations of Terpenings and nearly a century later, trucksbearing the Terpening name would still be hard at workfor a company that turned $7 million in 2002 revenue.

Also on the wall are some of the locally built but long-since-discontinued Brockways that made up the Terpeningfleet from the 1930s through the 1960s. And there’s thetankers — milk carriers through the early years, then fueland heating oil vessels when the firm sold off the dairyend of the operation in 1945 and recognized the potentialof gasoline and heating oil transport. Petroleum productsremain the company’s primaryfocus today.

And there’s one photoproudly labeled “FirstKenworth --1973,” dis-playing aW900 thatended up

providing 25 years of service for the company. That truck marked a major milestone for the Ter-

pening fleet, which has been almost exclusively Kenworthever since. Today, 22 Kenworth T800 tractors pull gleam-ing Heil aluminum fuel tankers, comprising a high-techfleet grounded in an old-school commitment to qualityand business values that has proven to be a successfulcombination for Terpening Trucking.

“A battle”“That was a battle to get that first Kenworth,” recalls

Dick Terpening, who with brothers George, Jr. andChuck head up the organization as it transitions into itsfourth generation of leadership, Craig and Rich Terpen-

ing . “My fa ther,George Sr.,

didn’t think we could get parts if we needed them like wecould from the Brockway plant 30 miles away.

“Well, the truck turned out to be so much better inquality that we barely needed parts. But the few times weneeded them, we actually got them quicker.”

The first Kenworth was quickly followed byanother in the fleet and by the mid-1980s,Kenworth trucks were a mainstayat the company. The trucks’ dura-bility has proved to be a key factorin Terpening Trucking’s success.

“We’re not a high mileage fleet, but we’re high wear and tear,” saysGeorge Terpening, noting that hislast group of trade-ins averaged100,000 miles annually in six to sevenyears of service. “And these trucksare running day and night.”

Twenty years ago, fuel deliverywas primarily a 9-to-5, Monday-Friday operation, but the business

of selling gas has become a just-in-time proposition forthe convenience stores and retail distributorships thatmake up Terpening Trucking’s customer base.As a result, the firm’s T800s work double duty — when one drivercalls it a day, another is waiting to take the wheel.

Such duty is tough on trucks, but the Terpeningsknow they run a truck that can take such a workload.

“The thing we’ve noticed over the years is the Ken-worth cab quality,”Dick says.“With other trucks, it’s doorhinges, window cranks, fuel gauges — silly little things, really, but things that Kenworth has paid attention to.

“George showed me a hood hinge on another makeof truck recently and this company used a half-inch pin.Kenworth’s was seven-eighths of an inch. And it went allthe way across.”

“Other trucks we looked at, the mirrors are mountedto the door and they vibrated so badly you could barelysee the trailer,” adds Mike Chellis, the firm’s safety direc-tor.“They get knocked loose after a while. But Kenworthmounts their mirrors to the cowl of the truck and they’reanchored there.”

Adds Terpening,“They’re little things, but they makea big difference.”

New Terpening T800s are spec’d with a 38-inch Aero-Cab® sleeper that has proved a perfect compartment forthe various protective gear and logbooks necessary tohaul hazardous materials.

“Even with the additional weight of the sleeper, we stillend up with a very weight-efficient tractor,”notes Chellis.

Image consciousDick Terpening notes that with T800 tractors and

aluminum tankers, he also ends up with a good-lookingdelivery package.

“Buying Kenworths is consistent with the image weproject,” he notes. “I think in this business, people forman impression of the product you haul based on theirimpression of your equipment.

“And our slogan has always been that we provide ‘thatlittle better service.’ With their durability, reliability andthe image they project, Kenworths have helped us do so.”

In the lobby, there’s a photo of a row of new T800sthat help prove his point.

eople tend to know where they stand with BrianKurtz, the president of Brian Kurtz Trucking inBreslau, Ontario.

Just ask the load broker who was verbally abusive toone of Kurtz’ drivers. Or the driver whose hygiene stan-dards were not befitting a company driver. They areamong many who have received a look-you-straight-in-the-eye dose of truth from Kurtz.

But by the same token, Kurtz’s record of long-standingrelationships with customers, brokers, employ-

ees, and truck builders show him to be one ofthe most loyal and honest gentlemen you’ll

find in any business. This hard-driving, plain-spoken truck-ing man is the same guy who’s still kicking himself for thetime he failed to recognize a company driver.

“I’m still embarrassed about that,”says Kurtz.“I want toknow what’s going on with the people who work here. Ifthey’re having a baby or if there’s a family event of somekind in their lives, I want to know. I don’t want to get so bigthat this is no longer what I can call a family company.”

The fact that Kurtz has been buying almost exclusivelyKenworth trucks since 1975 tells you something both aboutthe loyalty of the man and the performance of the Ken-worth T600, which he credits with helping retain driversand maximizing payload, fuel efficiency and resale value.

With his fleet up to 52 T600s, Kurtz’s driver turnoverrate is consistently measured at less than 25 percent peryear, he says.

“For people who care about working for a stable com-pany, operating quality equipment, making good moneyand have some concern that the company makes money, this company is for you,” says Kurtz. “If Billy BigRig-ger wants to run 90 miles per hour, he’s in the wrongplace. But we offer company benefits, a

profit-sharing plan and newKenworth trucks thatlook good and ride phe-nomenally.”

company growing too bigbased on his humblebeginnings. He left highschool in the late 1960safter the 10th grade, butthat hardly meant hislearning days were over. Hecomplemented his naturalbusiness savvy with experiences such as running loads ofhay to Florida for 20 percent of the gross take, then nego-tiating produce loads to haul back to Canada.

“That didn’t amount to much,” he recalls of his payagreement, “but it sure was educational.”

By 1973, he was married with four young boys athome, and in need of a more promising financial future. He developed some of his own hay contracts and ser-viced them with an old cabover.

“You did what you had to do back then,” he recalls.“If you had to tie up the accelerator arm with baling wireto get it done, that’s what you did.”

He continued to pave his way toward independencewith the purchase of his first Kenworth, a W900, in 1976.Within two years, his one-truck operation had becomea fleet of two and by 1981, with business booming andthe addition of some contracts hauling automotive parts,he was running 15 trucks.

By 1986, he had made two decisions that would laythe groundwork for the future growth of the company.

First, he

hired a full-time opera-tions manager so he couldspend more time on theroad, both driving and insales. Second, he orderedthree new T600s.

Phenomenal ride“I thought it was the ugliest truck on the road at first,”

says Kurtz, with characteristic honesty. “But it grew onme fast.

“After I drove one, I couldn’t believe the visibility. Theride was phenomenal and it was quiet. I knew it wouldbe a good ride for our team drivers.”

It also proved durable and cost-efficient. The fleet netsnearly 3,000 pounds of payload over that which his com-petitors scale with conventionals of another make. Kurtzcredits his ability to customize truck specifications, suchas Kenworth air ride suspensions and aluminum com-ponentry, for much of his weight savings.

Plus, the fleet posts fuel mileage in the 7 to 8 mile-per-gallon range, thanks to efficient Cat C15 andCummins N14 engines, the T600’s advanced aerody-namics and a concerted effort to reduce idling.

“We’ve reduced our overall idling time from 39 per-cent to 9 percent,” says Kurtz. “What that says to me isour drivers understand that if I don’t make money, theydon’t make money.”

Not all the Kenworths in the Kurtz fleet are work-horses. Kurtz has a W900L with a Studio AeroCab® and

a Cummins Signature 600 engine for his once-month-ly hauls to the U.S. A 1944 and a 1968 Kenworth areeach restored beauties saved only for show work.

They’re the only trucks in the fleet not measuredby their resale value, a figure Kurtz has monitoredsince he bought his first Kenworth.

“If it’s a Kenworth, it sells faster and formore,” he says. “I get $5,000 to $10,000

more than people trading comparableconventionals.

“I’m very happy with thesetrucks,” he adds.“From their eco-

nomics to keeping our drivershappy, they’re doing the job

for me.”

n a perfect business climate, companies like FrockBros. Trucking of Hanover, Pa., would have contin-ued an uninterrupted cycle of rotating new

Kenworth W900Ls into its all-Kenworth fleet through-out the last couple of years.

But the last couple of years in the trucking businesshave been far from perfect. The economy dipped, andfreight totals went with it. Trucking companies that hadcounted on the residual value of their premium truckswere suddenly faced with a market glutted with cheapimitators that made resale a challenge. Further com-pounding uncertainty were new engine emissionregulations that went into effect in October 2002, mak-ing many companies alter their buying plans.

Fortunately for brothers Ed and Dan Frock andDan’s son John, all of whom share duties in managingthe 48-state general commodity carrier with 105 trucks, they had made decisions years earlier that would func-tion as an insurance policy through these hardships.

Those were decisions to buy Kenworth trucks.“Kenworth trucks are so durable, so well-construct-

ed, that we found we could just keep running the truckswe had as a stop-gap measure,” says Dan Frock.

“So we did.”

Long-term loyaltyThe purchase of new Kenworth trucks is a near-term

proposition for the company, given that signs pointtoward economic recovery and the fact that they’ve beenhearing positive performance reviews from others

employing EGR engines, the Cummins’response to emis-sion mandates. That will bring familiar faces back to thelocal Kenworth dealership; the elder Frocks made theirfirst Kenworth purchase,a Model 825 cabover, back whenboth were working for a local manufacturer in 1961.

Within five years, Ed, then the equipment manager, had converted the entire fleet to Kenworth before break-ing out on his own with the purchase of HM Kelly, amasonry hauling company he still runs. The acquisitionof another small company lured Dan into partnershipwith his brother and by the time of deregulation in 1982,the company now known as Frock Bros. Trucking wasin business. Today, refrigerated food goods, pottery andgeneral industrial products make up about equal thirdsof the company’s payload.

Over the years, the brothers occasionally looked atother trucks, but always came back to Kenworth, employing T800s for local hauls and W900s with Aero-Cab sleepers and more recently, with Studio AeroCabs®,largely for their driver appeal. They had established aregular resale schedule, and were always impressed withthe returns they got on Kenworth trucks.

“In ordinary times,we’d have several trucks on the lotand they’d be gone like that,” says Dan.“But suddenly itgot tough to sell a truck for what it was worth. Ours werein excellent condition. We’re very careful to maintainthem religiously. We decided to keep running them.

“And these Kenworths just keep running and run-ning and running, without excessive maintenance.”

In cases of trucks that had surpassed 1 million miles,Frock says they replaced engines with reconditionedCummins N14 engines.

“The engine needed to be replaced,” says Dan. “Butthe truck didn’t.

“What we discovered is that Kenworth trucks willrun as long as you want them to. And the door handlesand little things that break down on other trucks aftera couple years, you don’t have that trouble with Ken-worth. You just don’t.”

Even with a venerable fleet that had more miles onit than that of companies running other makes, Johnreports that driver appeal remains high.

“We have no problem filling our W900Ls,”says John.“In fact, we have guys coming in here to run our olderW900Ls and they’re getting out of a new truck of anoth-er make to do it.”

Adds Dan,“They have an impressive appearance. I’dsay 75 percent of our applications are call-ins. In theprocess of introducing themselves, they say, ‘I saw yourtrucks — they look nice.’ It’s a vehicle that makes animpression.”

It’s a vehicle that makes an impression with cus-tomers as well, according to Dan.

“From an image standpoint, our customers are inter-ested in not only an on-time delivery, but — especially thefood vendors — in seeing a clean, impressive vehicle.”

In the end, even though economics forced FrockBros. Trucking to temporarily compromise on theirbuying schedule, they’ve made no such compromise ontheir commitment to customers.

“Our motto is,‘Built on a foundation of superior ser-vice,’” says John. “To deliver such service, we decidedlong ago that we need to operate premium trucks.”

It’s a decision that has paid premium rewards in chal-lenging times for Frock Bros. Trucking.

lose your eyes and envision the toughest, hard-est-working truck you can.

Some might dream up a fully loaded loggingtruck scaling a snowy mountain pass. Others might envi-sion a “Michigan train” doing the work of two tractorsas it grosses more than 160,000 pounds.

Few envision a medium-duty truck making dailydelivery runs to retail outlets.

Few, that is, but for Jackie McLarry.McLarry, the supervisor of vehicles and safety for

a group of Interstate Batteries distributors headquar-tered in Dallas, thinks his trucks — most of which arepainted in the distinctive colors of the Bobby LabonteNASCAR entry that Interstate sponsors —face someof the toughest duty around. And he’s discovering thatthe Kenworth T300, which he introduced to the Inter-state fleet of 1,500 vehicles about 18 months ago, ismore worthy of the task than any medium-duty onthe market.

“Most of our vehicles are 50-to-200-miles per dayvehicles, but the parking brake gets pulled on them 20to 30 times a day,” says McLarry. “It’s a lot of stop and

go, and we’re loaded right up to our maximum capac-ity all the time. For every battery our guys drop off, they’re picking a used one up, so it’s merely a transferof weight.

“You can’t get tougher duty on a truck. I don’t thinkthere’s any tougher service.”

Mixed fleetMcLarry had been operating a variety of medium-

duty vehicles as the needs of the company grew inservicing the 200,000 retail dealers who offer InterstateBatteries products in the U.S. and Canada. But he foundnone that offered the durability he needed. Hopeful of a10-year useful life span withhis trucks, he found himselfmore often settling for five —and then being disappointedin the trade value of the trucksdespite the shorter trade cycle.

So McLarry went shop-p i n g . A n d w h e n s a l e srepresentative Steve Kirkland

of MHC Kenworth in Dallas begancalling, McLarry figured he mayhave been dialing a wrong number.

“I didn’t even know Kenworthhad a medium-duty truck,”he says.

But McLarry agreed to give theT300 a once-over, and his firstimpressions were positive.

“A lot of medium-duty truckshave car-type components,” saysMcLarry.“They have plastic dash-es, for example, or if you need toreplace one gauge, you have toreplace a whole cluster of gauges. That type of componentry does-

n’t offer a lot of durability.“But with the T300, you could see right away that it

was built like a truck. It offered big-truck quality, but ata medium-duty price. It was affordable.

“And in dealing with Steve and the people at MHCKenworth, they recognized that this is a different mar-ket from their Class 8 business, and it requires adifferent approach. They took the time to understandour application.”

Driver responseWhile the Interstate Batteries fleet works hard, any-

one who has ever lifted a battery knows its drivers facechallenges as well. For that reason, the integration of Ken-worths into the fleet has been a welcome change.

“Our guys pick up 200 to 300 batteries a day at 40pounds apiece. The last thing they need to do is get intoan uncomfortable truck after that. And while the T300is built like a truck, our guys say it rides like a car, andthat makes their jobs easier.”

Reduced driver fatigue has additional payoffs, accord-ing to McLarry.

“A happy driver equals more business for us,”he says.“They’re the first people to meet our customer. If theyfeel good and they’re happy with the equipment they’reoperating, everything works better. From a driver’s stand-point, the T300 is a home run.”

So while the early returns are promising, for McLar-ry, the true test arrives a few years down the road, whenhe normally would be trading in trucks of other makes.

“Some people tell me a truck is a truck.A truck’s not atruck.Run one for five years and see what you’ve got then. That’s when you learn that all trucks are not created equal.

“I believe the T300 is built to pass that test.” KW

Here’s a good reason why your next

Kenworth should be Cummins-powered:

proven performance.

Cummins already has 25,000 EPA-

As of October 1, our customers had

run over a billion miles, and less than one

in a thousand had experienced even a single

day of downtime due to engine issues.

That’s reliability you can count on and

According to Chuck Bancroft Sr., concern over thenew EGR engines was much ado about nothing. “I

think our industry has been overly cautious when itcomes to the new low emission engines,” says the ownerof Bancroft and Sons, a Grand Prairie, Texas-based com-pany that runs a 120-truck fleet. “I rented trucks from

PacLease with the new Cummins ISX engine, and recent-ly conducted a 7,000-mile test with a Kenworth T600 andISX engine (rated at 475 horsepower, driven through a10-speed transmission). We were impressed. I wouldhave no hesitation in buying a Kenworth with the Cum-

mins EGR engine. I think the performancewas excellent.”

Bancroft’s fleet delivers mail for the U.S.Postal Service, logging close to 18 millionmiles per year. Bancroft’s company workswith MHC Kenworth, and the test unit, dubbed the “Clean Air Truck,” put the Ken-worth/Cummins ISX vehicle to work

hauling mail on a linehaul from Dallas toHouston for a two-week period. The truck

matched the same specs as the current T600sin his fleet and, for Bancroft, the results exceeded hisexpectations.

“We averaged more than 7 miles per gallon with theunit and that’s comparable to the best trucks working inour fleet today,”he said.“It was an apples-to-apples com-parison and we were impressed.”

Valerie Artmeier began her careerhauling aggregate, sand, blacktop

and other materials with a KenworthT800 dump truck for her dad, whostarted Artmeier Trucking in 1967.

Today, she’s taken over where herdad left off. Since his retirement inDecember, 2002,she’s run the Buffa-lo, New York-based

company, along with its “sister” com-pany, LCA Development, run by hermom, Linda. Combined, the twocompanies operate 39 trucks — Ken-worth T800s in dump applicationsand W900s for lowboy operations.

According to Valerie, one of the bigreasons for the company’s success is its drivers. “We takecare of our drivers, and they take care of us,”she says.“Wetreat them right and provide excellent equipment for themto drive. It’s why our turnover rate is so low.”

Artmeier recently took driver comfort one step furtherwhen it took delivery of the first T800 dump truck withKenworth’s new Extended Day Cab. “When I saw a pic-ture of the truck and all the extra room, we thought itmade sense for our operation,” says Valerie. “So far, response has been tremendous.”

The Extended Day Cab, available on Kenworth’s T600,T800 and W900 models, runs six inch-es longer with the cab roof raised fiveinches. It allows for two inches of addi-tional belly and leg room and 21 inchesof recline in the driver’s seat. Plus, itoffers extra storage — two cubic feetworth — behind the driver’s seat.

That extra space wasn’t lost onDavid Sprague, the Artmeier driverassigned to the new truck. “The leg

room is just phenomenal,” says Sprague. “Since I joinedthe company eight years ago, I’ve driven Kenworths andhave always loved them, but the added room with theExtended Day Cab is really something.” K
