Kent Sport is an amazing resource for those looking to get fit. the gym, the classes, the nutrition advice and personalized programmes are great. Staff are really friendly and easy to talk to and help with any issues. i have recommended Kent Sport to all my friends. if i didn’t have to leave the University of Kent in September i would have signed up for another year of membership as it is such great value for money. fitneSS and dance claSSeSKent Sport membership includes fitness and dance classes in the purpose built new studios. Group exercise is a fun way to keep healthy and stay motivated.

Classes include Spinning, Zumba®, international programmes from LES MILLS™ as well as an extensive selection of other fitness and wellbeing classes such as Pilates, Yoga, Boxercise, Circuit Training and Aerobics (classes are subject to change).

There are several types of exercise class, each with specific benefits:■■ Cardio – helping you to burn

calories and improve muscular tone and boost cardiovascular fitness.

■■ Mind and body – improves posture and tone, increasing flexibility and strength while revitalising the body and mind.

ConsultationsThe team can provide a full range of health, fitness and nutritional consultations to help you improve your lifestyle whether you are a University of Kent student, staff member or live and work in the area.

Our health and fitness consultation service is a great way to ensure that you achieve maximum benefit from your workout. Our qualified instructors offer an initial one to one fitness consultation to discuss your lifestyle and agree a way forward to achieve your goals. The service includes a variety of inductions, assessments and programmes tailored to suit your needs. Ask at reception to book your consultation.

Physiotherapy ClinicOur experienced and fully qualified physiotherapy staff will assist with recovery or rehabilitation and treating and preventing pain and injury. Regardless of whether you exercise and play sport to keep fit, or compete from club to international level, the physiotherapy clinic may be able to assist you. Enquire at reception.

Coaching and CoursesFor those wanting to try a new activity, Kent Sport’s sports development programme offers coaching in a variety of sports and courses for those wishing to become a referee or sports coach. Sports include:■■ Badminton■■ Football■■ Golf■■ Netball■■ Squash■■ Tennis

Xercise Factor (spring term)A six-week fitness and exercise programme to change participants health and lifestyle habits. Any Kent Sport member can apply to participate in the Xercise Factor and participants are selected by the fitness team. Each participant is mentored by a member of the fitness team. Following an initial assessment they are then supported through a strict regime in order to achieve their goals.

Fit for the Beach (summer term)Fit for the Beach challenges Kent Sport members to complete a gruelling six-week tailored beach body programme in the new fitness suite, with one-to-one guidance and support. This is an annual summer term promotion and is open to all Kent Sport members.

WellnessLook out for upcoming wellness events and activities to learn about improving your general health and wellbeing.

SummerZone (summer vacation)SummerZone is the University of Kent’s week-long summer sports camp for 5 – 12 year olds, run by double Olympian Mel Clewlow. The children participate in sports, fun and learning. The camp is packed with football, kwik cricket, rugby, hockey, tennis and other activities and is led by qualified coaches. SummerZone 2014 is from Monday 11 – Friday 15 August

freqUently aSKed qUeStionSWhat student sports club are available? Student clubs are run by Team Kent, part of Kent Union. A list of clubs is available online at www.kent.ac.uk/sports.

What is the difference between Gold and Silver membership? Gold membership offers access to the fitness suite throughout our opening hours. Silver membership offers access to the fitness suite weekdays between 7 – 9am and 2 – 4pm, 9 – 11am Saturdays and 10am – 12pm and Sundays.

Can I book a Fitness Consultation? Yes, we offer fitness and nutrition advice and guidance. Members can book an initial fitness consultation at reception. Consultations are with a member of the fitness team to

Have you got a swimming pool? No, but there are pools within a 10 minute walk of the University. Kent Sport intends to develop a swimming pool in the future.

Do you have personal trainers in the gym? Our fully qualified fitness staff are on hand to offer advice, programs and consultations to meet your requirements.

Do I need an orientation before I can use the facilities? You will need to attend a Kent Sport orientation, which incorporates your fitness suite induction, before using the facilities and these are bookable at reception.

Do I need to book into the studio classes?Classes do not have to be booked in advance but it is advisable as space is limited and they often fill up quickly.

What happens if I forget my membership identification card? You will be refused entry if you do not have your membership identification card with you. We have a strict no card no entry policy.

Who can apply for a sports scholarship? Sports scholarships of between £300 – £5,000 are available to elite sportsmen and women from any sport who compete (at least) at county level or equivalent. Students must commit to representing the University of Kent in BUCS competitions and preferably play for teams based on the Canterbury campus.

Do I need to activate my membership identification card before I can use the facilities? No.

How far in advance can I book courts, classes and other facilities?Gold and Silver members can book up to seven days in advance. Bronze members can book three days in advance. Book at reception or look out for the new online class booking system being introduced during 2013/14 for Gold and Silver members at www.kent.ac.uk/sports.

Do I need to book a court or pitch?Synthetic pitches and playing fields and other activities can be booked via reception in person, or by calling 01227 823623.

If I am a member of a student club do I have to join Kent Sport as well?Yes, use of Kent Sport facilities requires Kent Sport membership.

Are rackets, balls and other sports equipment available for hire?Kent Sport membership includes use of rackets, basketballs, netballs and footballs without additional charge. Items such as shuttlecocks, table tennis, squash and tennis balls can be purchased at reception.

What should I do if I cannot attend a class that I have booked? If you are unable to attend a class you must cancel your booking by calling 01227 823623 no later than 30 minutes prior to the class start time. Voicemails may be left if the phone is busy. Your membership account will be limited until outstanding fines for each ‘no show’ are paid if this procedure is not followed.

What parking is available at Kent Sport?There is parking available both at the Sports Centre and the Pavilion. Kent Sport public members can use on campus visitor parking and claim a refund from reception. Kent Sport staff members can use their usual campus parking permit.

Can I bring a guest?Gold and Silver members may bring a guest to attend an activity with them for just £6.00 – a fantastic opportunity to try the array of facilities on offer before taking a membership.

Kent Sport – Get involvedInter College CupThe Inter College Cup is a multi-event sports competition for students at the University of Kent, and is played between the five colleges that make up the Canterbury campus. Despite the natural competitive element that comes with any tournament, the general ethos is one of involvement and participation, with every team welcoming players of all abilities. The sports are:

Netball Inter College Netball involves participants competing in a shorter length version of the game.

Men’s Football The Inter College Football League is the oldest running intra mural

competition on campus and consists of two teams from Darwin, Eliot, Keynes and Rutherford and a postgraduate team from Virginia Woolf.

Park Wood residents will be allocated a specific college and all other players must represent their affiliate college.

Men’s BasketballNow entering a sixth season since its inception in the 2008/09 academic year, the Inter College Basketball League has become a regular addition on the intra mural calendar.

Fixtures are played on alternate Sundays between 1pm and 5pm in the Main Hall at the Sports Centre.

Badminton Played in a singles and mixed doubles format.

Tennis Played in a singles and mixed doubles format.

Other Intra Mural EventsRacket Leagues and LaddersPlayers of all standards have the opportunity to play other participants at their own convenience. Racket leagues and ladders are available in badminton, squash and tennis. Free to Gold and Silver members or Bronze pay per activity rates apply.

Mixed Dodgeball LeagueMixed Dodgeball has a maximum number of six players per team on court at any one time. The main objective of each team is to eliminate all members of the opposing team.

Mixed RoundersPlayed once a year in the summer term this school favourite, involves mixed

sex teams and is open to all students at the University of Kent.

SoccerZoneSoccerZone is the campus based five-a-side football competition. Five leagues are run every Friday between 12 – 5pm at our outdoor facilities.

Kent Amateur Football League The KAFL was set up by students with a focus on inclusion and increased participation in 11-a-side football on campus. League matches are played every Saturday and/or Sunday.

Mike Wilkins Charity TournamentThis charity driven event takes place once a year in the summer term and involves an exhibition football match

The David James Boxing ScholarshipThis scholarship is awarded in memory of former Director of Sport and national boxing coach, the late David James. It is designed to support selected boxers to ensure they achieve their potential. In partnership with John Horton, the University offers a scholarship of £250-£2,250 per year.

University Sports ScholarshipsThe University of Kent is committed to delivering sporting excellence and is proud to offer scholarships to students with outstanding sporting ability.

Kent Sport will work with those awarded a scholarship on a programme of general fitness training in association with their formal training and development.

University general sports scholarshipsThe University has a fund which supports numerous awards between £300 and £5,000. You must demonstrate a high level of performance in, and a commitment to, your sport. You must have played at county level or equivalent and be aspiring to national level. Scholarships are normally only allocated to students competing in major national sports which are well represented at the University in the BUCS leagues.

The J&K Huntley Scholarship (Cricket)This scholarship is worth £2,500 per year and is offered in partnership with Kent County Cricket Club. Applicants must be free and willing to register and play for Kent CCC. If and when called upon to play for a county side, appearances will be rewarded by the payment of match money.

Rugby scholarshipsIn partnership with Canterbury Rugby Club, the University offers a scholarship for one of the 1st team players of up to £2,000 per year. The criteria are for the recipient to be a

1st team player at Canterbury Rugby Club and play for the University in the BUCS tournament. The selection for the scholarship is made by Canterbury Rugby Club.

Hockey scholarshipsThe University offers hockey scholarships of up to £2,000 in partnership with Canterbury Ladies’ Hockey Club, Canterbury Men’s Hockey Club, Holcombe Hockey Club, Old Bordenians Hockey Club and Maidstone Hockey Club. You must be able to represent both the University and one of the clubs’ 1st teams.

With the Kent Sport facilities at the heart of the Canterbury campus they are immediately accessible with maximum convenience. The programmes and facilities are available throughout most of the year and staff can benefit from enjoying the fitness and sport activities out of term time as well as during term time.

Vice Chancellor’s CupThe VC’s cup is an inter-departmental staff competition for all abilities, which runs throughout the year. A variety of sports and challenges take place predominantly during vacation times including: dodgeball, school sports

day, rounders, bat and trap, racket sports and a pub quiz. The Cup enables staff to meet other members of staff who they may not otherwise deal with, in a relaxed environment.

Staff Introductory Sports Card and 10% Discount on Annual MembershipThe University of Kent staff introductory sports card is given to new members of staff at the Staff Induction Fair run by HR. It allows new members of staff the opportunity to try out the sports facilities at the Canterbury campus five times absolutely free. New staff wishing to join can benefit from a 10% discount. University of Kent alumni have the opportunity to continue their connection with the Canterbury campus and enjoyment of the wide range of sports and fitness activities that Kent Sport has to offer. Even if not local to the area, alumni can still join in with particular sporting events such as the Mike Wilkins Charity Trophy.

Kent Sport Annual ‘Old Boy’s/Girl’s’ WeekendPreviously played between current and alumni inter college football teams in a five aside format.

Students have returned from as far as Dubai to play in the tournament.
