In relation to the Consulting team of Veterinary Specialists I have worked closely
with and learnt a great deal from in the last 2 years, a number of these people are
Board Certified in the U.S. with their particular area of expertise:
Consulting Veterinarians I have worked closely with include:
Dr Martin Haulena, DVM, MSc, DACZM, Vancouver Aquarium, Canada, Senior
Veterinarian, ([email protected]), Board Certified Zoo Veterinarian,
and Dr Robert Braun, DVM, MS, of Montana in the US, ([email protected]), as the
2 medical consultants.
Dr Carmen Colitz, DVM, PhD, Diplomate ACVO, ([email protected]),
Jupiter Pet Emergency & Specialty Center, Jupiter, Florida, U.S. and Animal Eye
Care, and Dr Tom Sullivan, DVM, Diplomate DACVO,
([email protected]), Seattle Animal Eye Clinic, as the consulting veterinary
ophthamologists. Both Board Certified Ophthamologists.
Dr James Bailey, DVM, MS, DACVA, ([email protected]), U.S. Navy and
National Marine Mammal Foundation, for advice and support with marine
mammal anesthesia. A Board Certified Anesthesia Specialist in the U.S. I, Dr
Kelly O'Sullivan, perform sea lion anesthesia on my own, as a veterinarian, which
requires intensive monitoring equipment and skill, such as continuous analysis of
End Tidal CO2, (Carbon dioxide levels), ECG, Blood pressures, pulse oximetry
and oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, consideration for ventilating sea
lions/seals. I have been involved with 35 + sea lion/seal anesthetics now, in recent
years.
Dr Marina Ivancic, DVM, DACVR, ([email protected]) U.S. Navy and
National Marine Mammal Foundation and Dr Sophie Dennison,
([email protected]), BVM&S, MRCVS, DACVR, RCVS, Recognized
Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging, Adjunct Professor, School of Veterinary
Medicine, University of Wisconsin – Madison, for thorough diagnostic
ultrasonography and radiology skills.
Dr Gisele Montano, DVM, MS, ([email protected]) and Dr Todd
Robeck, DVM, PhD, ([email protected]), both from the SeaWorld &
Busch Gardens Reproductive Research Center, for consultancy and artificial
insemination reproduction programs. At the facility Dolphin Adventure, Vallarta
Adventures, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, we have been collecting dolphin semen and
going through the process of freezing the semen, one day every week, to store in
liquid nitrogen, for future Artificial Insemination programs. A technique I have
learnt in the last 20 months, as Senior Veterinarian, with my Lab Technician, Abel
de la Torre, on advice and guidance in full-time consultancy, from Drs Gisele
Montano and Dr Todd Robeck, mentioned here, above. We also imported semen
from the U.S. via PROFEPA permit, from Sea World of San Diego, SeaWorld &
Busch Gardens Reproductive Research Center. An Artificial Insemination
program has been running over many years, with 4 dolphins Artificially
Inseminated, via sterile Hysteroscopy, while I was present as Senior Veterinarian
at Dolphin Adventure, with the Consulting Veterinarians Drs Todd Robeck and Dr
Gisele Montano, on site at the facility.
Skip Young of Vancouver Aquarium, Water Quality Manager at Vancouver
Aquarium, Vancouver, Canada, for water quality consultancy.
Utilizing Excel Medical Files for timely record keeping daily, as well as OERCA,
which is a comprehensive, electronic record management system that makes
collecting animal and facility information simple and analyzing data easy. It is a
powerful web based animal records solution for Zoological facilities and field
research. This role had me responsible for sea lion anesthesia sole charge and the
ordering of new equipment, such as a Backpack Stinger portable anesthetic
machine, with the capacity to do very large species of animals, Sentinel V
3025i anesthetic monitoring equipment, including ETCO2, surgical equipment,
new Ultrasound Sonosite Edge machine. I feel well equipped with marine
mammal and other species, ultrasonography, sample collection, diagnostic
interpretation, careful treatment schedules, on-going monitoring, endoscopy - even
voluntarily trained, also hysteroscopy (involuntary) and de-frosting frozen semen
for Artifical Insemination. I believe I have the knowledge and skill base to move
forward in these dimensions. Trained Voluntary Cryosurgery has been well
practiced at the recent facility, with some oral viral lesions in a few of the older
dolphins in the population, all to successful and good effect. I have performed
numerous thorough autopsies, sample collection and worked on further diagnostics
and case information, with skilled pathologists in additional testing, such as Dr
David Espinosa and Dr Judy St Leger, Sea Worlds in the US Pathologist. Six
dolphin calves and one South American Sea Lion pup, were born at the facility
over the 20 months. This position also included working with veterinary
colleagues at Cabo Dolphins, Cabo Adventures, Mexico, with their different
environmental challenges to learn from, with that population of dolphins.
