Welcome to the Autumn 2012 Edition of the KCS Informer.

This edition features a further reminder for all schools in England with Key Stage 1 pupils, of the matched funding of up to £3000 which they can access to purchase Synthetic Phonics products. Access to these funds finishes on 31st March 2013 and we urge you to take advantage of the DfE backed scheme. Please see pages 8-9 for further details.

Still on the theme of Key Stage 1 & 2 classroom resources, we are very pleased to launch our new range of “Curriculum Tubs”. The quality of the product is excellent and the handy storage jars will ensure that as well as being great classroom resourses, they can be easily stored.

We have also highlighted a number of framework contracts available to your school or academy, all let under OJEU guidelines and all designed to provide your school with best value e.g. MFD’s and Audio Visual & Interactive Products. Please see pages 10-12.

Can I ask for your help please?

Contained with in this copy of the KCS Informer and/or sent as an email to be sent to your school, is a copy of the 2012 KCS Schools Customer Care Survey. Can I ask that you set aside 5 minutes and return it to me? Your feedback is so important to us in shaping our product range and service offering for the future.

Once again thank you for your continued support and if you have any further ideas or suggestions in relation to KCS, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Steven Munday Divisional Director, Educational Supplies T: 01622 605485 E: [email protected]

PHONICS

In April 2011, the Government announced matched funding of up to £3,000 on a selected range of synthetic

phonics products and training, as contained in a catalogue entitled “The Importance of Phonics 2 -

September 2012”. This funding is available until 31st March 2013, to all state funded schools (including

academies and free schools) in England with Key Stage 1 pupils.

How to claim your Phonics Matched FundingFollow these simple instructions:

• Account set-up: Hassle free ordering with KCS by using your existing account number or by using the link below to use our fast track account set up. Return your completed KCS Account Form by email to [email protected].

• Choice: You choose which items from the catalogue best meet your requirements, making

as many individual purchases as you wish, but you will only receive matched funding up to a maximum amount of £3,000 based upon a total spend of £6,000 which is available until March 2013 – for example:

- School selects products from the catalogue to a value of £6,000.

- School places the orders with KCS.

- KCS invoices only 48% – School only pays £2,940 – Leaving it an additional £120 (including matched funds) to spend on Phonics!

- KCS recovers 50% of the catalogue value directly from the DfE.

- Simple and worry free.

• Remember: you can make multiple orders until March 2013, and you do not need to spend your full allocation. If you decide to spend more than

your allocation then this will be invoiced at the full catalogue price.

• Order placement: You can place your order via: Phone 0845 270 8811 Fax 0800 243 732 Email [email protected]

• Delivery: If you have ordered “P” code products before Noon, then you will enjoy free next day delivery direct to your school. “T” codes will take between 10-14 days.

• Invoicing: You will only be invoiced for 48% of the value of the “T” and “P” products you have ordered from the catalogue. Training is dealt with differently – please see the details opposite.

• Queries: Phone 0845 270 8811

N.B. As this is a match-funded initiative, no refunds or returns are available – so please order with care! (VAT will be charged where applicable.)

How to claim your Phonics Training Matched Funding

You can reclaim 50% of the cost of any Phonics course, plus VAT where applicable. Details can be found at the back of the Phonics catalogue (pages 102 onwards).

How to claim the money back

Once you have completed the training course, details are sent to KCS to enable you to reclaim 50% of the cost of the course, plus VAT where applicable. You must provide a copy of the invoice together with a completed copy of the “Match-Funding Claim and Feedback Form”, to obtain your matched funding.

The form can be found on the inside back cover of the Phonics catalogue or from the KCS Webshop.

Once we have received your invoice and form, these are submitted to the DfE. Receiving the credit from the DfE may take at least three months. We will then credit this amount to your KCS account.

Ellie Honey a year 12 student said, ‘It was great to be given the chance to design the window using our own theme. All of the work will go towards our BTEC qualification and it is a fantastic opportunity’.

Students produced colourful backdrops for the window and all of the clothes were sourced from the shop, so all were available to be purchased.

Bullers Wood School

The star studded theme of a ‘Night at The Movies’ fashion show, held at Bullers Wood School in March, served as inspiration for a window display, designed by Bullers Wood Fashion students, at the Bromley South branch of Oxfam.

Willowbrook Primary School moved into a new building on November 11, 2011 in Rosen Crescent, Hutton, Brentwood.

New Building Opens!

27School Shout!

The new construction is a fantastic improvement on the old building which had a very leaky roof. Originally built in 1960 as a separate infant and junior school, it had deteriorated so badly that pupils and staff had moved out in 2007 into the next door junior block.

At the opening ceremony, Mrs Taggart, Head Teacher said “Today is a special day. At long last, after seven years, we can celebrate the opening of our beautiful new school. Finally, our children have a building they deserve, one where they can thrive, one that can help them to learn and one that makes us proud.”

“The children who are here now have been amazing and coped so well. They have fully appreciated what they have and adapted well to the changes that the new building has presented.”

The outdoor learning area includes a small farm, fruit orchard, pond and allotment area. The farm is home to goats, pigs, sheep, chickens, rabbits and a colony of bees as well as a reptile house containing more unusual specimens.

The Outdoor Learning Area is to provide students and the community with an amazing range of benefits and opportunities and will give them the chance to understand the world beyond the classroom. They will be learning where food comes from and the cycle of “Farming to Fork”, as well as experiencing the core curriculum subjects taught using this exciting resource.

Ravensbourne School

The Ravensbourne School prides itself on being forward thinking and innovative, providing a superb learning environment, excellent staff and a real sense of community. The school works hard in continuing to develop how students are educated and has now developed an outdoor learning area.

29School Shout!

At Juniors, the whole school streamed into the playground and sat down to await the arrival of our ‘Queen’ for the day, Olivia Marsh and her Ladies in Waiting, Eleanor Waring and Caitlin Cole.

Meanwhile, at Seniors, the celebrations began with an assembly that celebrated the life and achievements of the Queen as well as reflecting on life in the 1950s – when there were only two TV channels to choose from – if indeed you were lucky enough to own a television! Paragon and Meridian house members learned to sing ‘Rock Around the Clock’, whilst Vanbrugh and Morden were enthusiastically learning to jive. Students planted red, white and blue flowers into old fizzy drinks bottles and these have been hung around the pond – they look beautiful.

In the afternoon, the winners of the Jubilee art competitions were announced, with the overall prize going to Sunanda Saxena for her excellent portrait of the Queen.

As you can see, it was a lovely day and a fantastic start to the Jubilee celebrations”.

Blackheath School

“ The whole school became awash with red, white and blue on Friday 1st June as we celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Both the Junior and the Senior School playgrounds were decked out with bunting as we enjoyed our own ‘street party.’ Everyone dressed in 1950’s fashions and, as you can see, the girls looked fantastic!

Linked in with the Olympics, they are encouraging 100 Days of Peaceful Events, 50 before and 50 after the Games. In Ancient Greece, warring parties lay down their arms for a period before and after the Olympics so that contestants could travel safely to and from the arenas. It is hoped that young people everywhere will take part in football matches, cake sales, plays and musical events, in fact anything that involves them coming together in their communities.

To promote the campaign they are asking celebrities to autograph a car, which will drive around the Capital. Boris Johnson was the first to sign and is fully supporting the efforts to bring peace to our streets.

Coopers Lane School

On Thursday 14th June, Coopers Lane School were lucky enough to welcome Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, together with Margaret and Barry Mizen of The Jimmy Mizen Foundation and Grace Idowu of The David Idowu Foundation, to a special assembly. Margaret and Grace, who both lost sons to violent crime in 2008, have joined forces to set up the ‘Release the Peace’ movement in order to encourage young people to be positive forces within their communities.

Over the last 18months the school’s “Gardening Club” have also worked hard on this project.

The Garden was sponsored by three local businesses; B&Q, Barclays Bank and NatWest Bank. Representatives from two of the companies were able to join in with the celebration and they have already shown an interest in joining in with future projects.

Sherwin Knight Infant School

“ It was one of the first days of sunshine and it made the garden come alive with its vibrant colours, aromas and some wonderful scarecrows, made by children as part of a school competition. The guests applauded everyone’s efforts and were amazed by the scale of the project and its complexity”.
