Happy New Year from the students and staff of KCS!!! We hope you enjoyed your Christmas break with family and friends and have set your sights on the New Year. We wish you health and happiness in 2013.

The floors are shining once again from a fresh coat of wax thanks to Mr. Hunter’s work over the Christmas break. Out of respect for Mr. Hunter’s efforts and help to preserve the shine we ask all students, staff and visitors to please remove your outside shoes as you enter the building. Thank you for your consideration and cooperation. We would like to wish Mr. Mark Scott all the best as he and his wife, Brigid, relocate to Whitecourt, Alberta at the end of January. Mark and Brigid were married last spring and this move provides the opportunity for them to not only work in the same community as each other but in the same school. Students and staff will miss Mr. Scott’s positive disposition and friendly nature. Congratulations on your new teaching assignment, Mark, and thank you for contributing to what makes KCS “A Great Place to Grow!” Please remember you will always have a place in our hearts here at KCS. At this time I would ask you to please join me in welcoming Mr. Dan Clark as a new teacher to our KCS community. Dan resides in Herbert with his family and recently completed a temporary teaching position at King George School in Moose Jaw. Dan attained his B. Ed. in Prince George BC at the University of Northern British Columbia and has experience in the middle years. Welcome aboard, Dan! We look forward to learning and growing with you.

Christmas dinner Thursday, December 20th

. Students and staff enjoyed preparing for this annual event. We acknowledge each family’s contribution of food and send a thank you your way for helping make our dinner a wonderful success once again this year. Thank you to everyone who took part in the raffle. Congratulations to the winners: Gail Gross (Sony e-Reader), Chase Kohle (iTunes gift card), John Robertson (Red Coat Inn certificate), Shelby O. (ginger bread house), and Dale Gross (bubble gum machine). Thank you to the Red Coat Inn and Mrs. Jalbert for donating to the Christmas raffle. The proceeds went toward the cost of the hams, ice cream, and other treats at our Christmas dinner. With the beginning of a new calendar year comes the end of our first semester of the school year. Students in grades 10-12

are busy preparing for final exams which are scheduled for January 28th

& 29th

. The exam schedule is included in this issue of the Connections along with a permission slip which must be signed by parents in order for students to leave the school after they have completed writing their exams. Report cards will be coming home in early February for students in grade 10-12. Parents of grade 9 students should be on the lookout for a progress report at this time but not a formal report card. All other grades should not expect a report card at this time as we have a three term report for grades K-9. Students in grades K-9 will receive their report cards at the end of term two in mid-

March. In the mean time if you would like to discuss your child’s progress please feel free to connect with their teachers here at school. Semester II timetable is in development and will be in place before the end of January. According to our Prairie South Schools calendar the first day of semester II is Monday, February 4

th but given the schedule of exams we are able to protect our

valued instructional time and start semester II two days early. This means the first day of semester II for KCS will be Thursday,

January 31st.

Our KCS curling teams have had a slow start to their season given the challenges our rink facility has experienced this year. We have had a few practices at the Lafleche rink and hope to play some exhibition games with teams from some of our neighbouring communities over the next short while in preparation for the playoffs which will take place in early February. The season is short but those who are taking part are “keen” about the sport. All the best to our KCS curlers. The KCS Choir will resume practices at noon Wednesdays, under the guidance of music instructor, Mrs. Sherry Sproule and our own Mrs. Laura Loverin. They are in the process of choosing songs for entry into the Lafleche and District Music Festival

which will take place later this spring. All the best to those who are choosing to take part in this opportunity. In other extra-curricular news our KCS Drama group has starting to organize for their annual dessert theatre. Students in grades 7-12 will be working with Mrs. Kelly Reid-Ward and Mme Edna Lacasse-Corcoran as their directors in preparation for the performance which is scheduled for early March. Students and staff are anticipating our annual ski trip at Hidden Valley in Elk Water this Friday, January 18

th. As this is a

non-instructional day, students will not be missing any classroom time. This provides more freedom for students to enjoy the day and have opportunity to rest over the weekend before returning to school Monday morning. Thank you to Mr. Paul Promhouse for organizing the trip. We appreciate your efforts planning this outdoor experience. A reminder for grade 12 students and their parents that you are invited to a graduation organizational meeting Monday,

January 21st at 7:00 p.m. here at the school. See you then!

NUTRITION CORNER TUNA AND WHITE BEAN SALAD

This is the easiest tuna salad recipe you can find. It is

also delicious and healthy. You can replace fresh herbs

with other herbs such as dill or basil as well.

Main Ingredients:

Tuna: 1 can (190 grams), drained

White bean: 1 can (540 mL), drained

Pickles: 1/2 cup (125 mL) , chopped

Fresh parsley: 1-2 tbsp (5 – 10 mL), chopped

Fresh mint: 1 tbsp (5 mL); chopped

Onion Spring: 1-2 tbsp (5 – 10 mL), chopped

Red bell pepper: 1/4 cup (62 mL), chopped

Fresh lemon juice: 1-2 tbsp (5 – 10 mL)

Olive oil: 1-2 tbsp (5 – 10 mL)

Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. In a bowl, combine all ingredients and mix

thoroughly.

2. Taste and adjust the seasoning, lemon juice and

olive oil.

PARENTS/RESIDENTS Kincaid School Community Council is

interested in holding an "English as a

Second Language" class for all the new

German speaking residents in the

Kincaid area. We are looking for a

minimum of 10 adults to sign up so we

can proceed with the class. It will be

offered for FREE through the Great

Plains College, and the classes will

take place here at Kincaid Central

School early in the New Year. For more

After getting up in the morning if you find

yourself quite tired then there are various other

reasons attributing to it. The following reasons will

help you to understand as well as to avoid it and to get

a quality sleep.

If you are inconsistent in your sleep schedule

then it could hamper your sleep cycle. When your

sleeping time varies from weekdays to weekends, then

you are inconsistent.

Improper functional activity can reduce your

energy considerably. When you find yourself bored,

then try something new, which can help your energy to

boost up.

When you are anemic then it prevents the

travelling of sufficient oxygen through your whole

body. It could easily make you tired. So consult with

your doctor to become aware of your present

condition and then he/she will definitely help you to

improve such condition.

Not getting enough sunlight can leave an

impact over the releasing of energizing chemical

serotonin. It mostly happens with people involved in a

desk job or working in an artificial light. As per the

WebMD, at least 20 minutes of outside time can

change your energy level noticeably, which will help

you in your sleep.

Getting enough exercise is also considered

useful for boosting up your energy level. Research

shows that getting exercise helps you to recover from

your fatigue. So next time when you are thinking about

napping, just overcome such thinking and get some

exercise.

If you are feeling stressed all the time, it could

affect your sleep. To get rid of such anxiety, yoga and

meditation could also help you.

Stress related hormones like adrenaline and

cortisol will give you an initial boost but gradually they

will wear you down as your inner monitoring systems

will be continuously in an alert state. People suffering

from chronic stress gradually get drained of all the

energy and there comes a stage where they are no

longer able to cope with any problems in life. Yoga and

meditation are some of the most effective measures of

dealing with stress. They will help in improving your

sleep pattern and will make your brain more focussed.

When you are low in energy then chopping off

your coffee could be tough. However caffeine could

also leave a negative impact on your sleep. So try not

to have caffeine within six hours before going to bed.

TAEKWONDO

CLUB Just before Christmas break, the Taekwondo class had a test night here at the Kincaid Community Rink. The students got a chance to show their teacher, Jason Switzer, their highest kicks, best blocks, and forms (which for the red- white stripe belts the forms had over 40 different steps consisting of blocks, punches and kicks - all in a certain pattern). The night was topped off with the belt ceremony. The students all passed and received new belt colours. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the test night - you guys are amazing!!! Below is a picture of our fine group of young men and women who participated.
