We are delighted to welcome you to our Stand Out in a Global Market event here in Hull!

The day seems particularly important given that political events over the last 18 months have created a lot of uncertainty and misinformation around international opportunities and Britain’s role in the world. This is especially true for young people who have traditionally taken advantage of EU membership to live, work and study abroad.

Whilst the full implications of Brexit are not yet known, what is certain is that a global outlook and intercultural skills are vital assets for anyone looking to stand out from the crowd in today’s labour market (and will continue to be so regardless of what happens politically over the next few years).

The good news for young people is that you can begin to develop these skills long before you start work – and have a lot of fun doing so! Whether it is studying abroad, volunteering on a gap year or working overseas, there is an international option for everyone.

Throughout today you will hear first-hand accounts which will help you understand these different opportunities. Indeed, hopefully the only question you will be left with will be which path you decide to follow first!

Dr Kirsty Clode,

Chair, Women into Manufacture and Engineering

I loved science and maths at school and completed a BSc and PhD in Chemistry at Nottingham University before joining BP. I started as a Research Chemist at BP's Research Centre at Hull and quickly moved into Operations Management. Throughout my 27 year career with BP I worked in European, Asian and US operations. I have a strong track record of developing and leading world class, diverse teams that manage high hazard operations safely, reliably and efficiently. My last role before I retired was the Entity Leader for BP's Petrochemical complex in Hull.

Currently one of my areas of focus is to inspire more girls and women to take up STEM careers within the manufacturing and engineering businesses surrounding the Humber. I chair the Women in Manufacturing and Engineering (WiME) programme which is a business led initiative to inspire girls and women to choose a career in these industries. I work with teams from ABP, Airco Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, APDComms, BP, British Steel, CITB, Dong Energy, Howden Joinery, Ideal Boilers, KCOM, Network Rail, Siemens, Spencer Group, Swift Caravans, The Deep, The Humber Bridge and Vivergo Fuels to deliver successful interactive events.

Youth Work Unit

The Youth Work Unit Yorkshire & Humber (YWU Y&H) is a regional infrastructure organisation which supports the youth sector and provides a strategic lead through providing information, advice and practical regional co-ordination, delivering a range of professional networks.

Additionally, the YWU Y&H facilitates the Y&H UK Youth Parliament in partnership with the British Youth Council, the Y&H Youth LGBT+ network and Y&H Council for young people with experience of care. These aim to bring together young people, to share ideas, good practice, network, and develop campaigns to bring positive change and improve the lives of young people.

Europe Direct

Information Centre (EDIC) - Leeds is your free and local information centre for anything EU related. EDIC Leeds, based in Leeds Central Library, covers Yorkshire & The Humber and is part of a network of EDIC centres across Europe, which acts as the first point of contact between the EU and its citizens. We are here to answer your questions on all EU matters such as; EU policies, how decisions made in the EU affect the UK, your rights as an EU citi-zen, working or studying in the EU, travelling in Europe, doing business in the EU, funding oppor-tunities etc.

Careers Yorkshire and the Humber

Since 2010, Careers Yorkshire and the Humber (CYH) has been the prime contractor for the National Careers Service across Yorkshire and the Humber. The company is formed by three member career companies - aspire-igen, C&K Careers and Prospects.

Careers Yorkshire and the Humber offer a wide range of services across the region, including but not limited to:

Supporting employers and their workforce Brokering relationships to create a more joined up careers
