Its not a fact we like tothink about, but manykids in our local schoolsthrough their day hun-
y, causing lack of energyd focus, inhibiting theirility to learn.
School food programslp address this problem,t what about the week-ds?This month ShareNettroduces its Food toow pilot program in twongston schools: Wolfleementary and Spectrumommunity. Food to Growll distribute nutritious, sily portable food to stu-nts in need for weekendnsumption, when schoolod programs are notailable to them.Students will be iden-ied byhool coun-ors, wholl discussr t i c i p a -n with the

studentsve already been referredthe program, and the
mbers are expected to
ild gradually but steadilyword gets out.The food will includereals, single servings ofsh produce and easilycrowaveable items. The food is meant to besy to prepare and con-me as we will not knowe home environment oroking equipment availableere. The food is intendedr the student named andmeant for weekend use,t as anytime snacks or for
the extended family, thoughwe understand that, realisti-cally, the kids will consumeas they wish.
A Spectrum staffer toldus that, Most of their stu-
dents are hun-
gry most of thetime. This may be
partly due tothe fact theirstudent body isall adolescent, but many ofthe Spectrumkids are not instable homesor are techni-cally home-less, stayingwith friends
or couch surfing, so thereis hardly an ideal environ-ment for keeping a growing
teen well-fueled for school.Families in need of assis-
tance beyond Food to Growwill be encouraged throughthe program to contact us,so that the entire familymay benefit from servicesavailable through ShareNet,rather than just the stu-dent.
Students will be eligibleeven if the family alreadyreceives ShareNet assistanceand vice versa; participa-tion in one program will
not exclude participationfrom the other.
If your child could ben-efit from the Food to Growweekend food program inschools, please contact yourschool counselor. With
only a couple of months leftin the current school term, this phase of the program isregarded as a pilot, perfectfor working out the neces-sary structures, purchasing, and logistics.
At the end of the term par-ticipants, families, schools, and ShareNet will evaluatethe programs effectivenessand decide upon continu-ation and direction for thefuture. The program hasbeen in development since2009, with eager volunteersand staffers excited aboutits possibilities.
Food to Grow is expectedto find and meet its need. Ifyoud like to donate specifi-cally to this program, pleaselet us know; as it grows
the costs to operate it willincrease.
Growers needed
Farmers and home gar-deners: If you have excess
produce, or would like toearmark part of your grow-ing area for donations toShareNet, we would like tohear from you.
We would like to buildconsistent relationshipswith growers, as produceremains a challenging seg-ment of the food we pro- vide. We either seem tohave none at all or a wind-fall which is so much itsthen difficult to store ordistribute quickly.
Reliable, anticipated rela-tionships would help usprovide more fresh produce
to the part of our commu-nity in need.
