The CREW program is having it' s inaugural Open House event on January 25th from the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We will be serving Ferris Catering's light refreshments, and the event is drop in style attendance. Feel free to show up at any point during the event hours to meet our staff, learn about the partnership between CREW and Ferris State University, learn about the services offered to our students, and more about the role CREW plays in prevention and education regarding substance use, and recovery from substance use disorder. CREW seeks to identify students in recovery from SUD (substance use disorder) and provide them with a safe haven within the campus in which they may enjoy fellowship with other student members in recovery from SUD. The program also offers many other services that we hope to tell all attendees to the Open House. We warmly welcome any and all faculty and staff at our location in BHC, room 203. Birkam Health Center requests that all attendees utilize the side entrance of the building, and the stairwell just inside the entrance. This will avoid the HIPPA regulations effecting other areas of the building. Attendees that need to use the elevator will still need to enter from the front of the building, and sign in with the front desk staff. Thank You. Administration of One-Day Liquor Licenses for 2019 Ferris State University has the opportunity to apply for and receive up to 12 one-day liquor licenses each calendar year to help enhance special events held at university facilities. These licenses are only necessary for events where alcohol is served and there is a charge to participate in the event (ticket) and/or a charge for the alcohol sold separately at the event (cash bar). Each year, the University’s Liquor License Application Review and Approval Committee solicits, reviews and approves the applications for these licenses. The Committee’s review and approval of applications are guided by the following principles: Only Ferris State University-sponsored events will be considered. The service of alcohol should enhance the event beyond ticket sales or revenue generation. Priority for granting licenses will be given to events with larger attendances. Priority for granting licenses will also be given to events that have the potential to impact the entire University as opposed to individual departments only. Licenses will not be granted for events with an individual ticket price of less than $50 per person. The potential and/or likelihood of minors who may possibly attend will also be considered. Departments seeking consideration for a license in calendar year 2018, must submit an Alcohol Authorization Exception Event Form for the committee’s review no later than Friday, February 8, 2019 . This form can be found on the Purchasing Department website under the Forms Tab or by accessing this link directly: https://www.ferris.edu/HTMLS/administration/purchase/pdfs-docs/AlcoholAuthorizationFormEVENTUPDATE2015final.pdf Please complete the form, including obtaining the appropriate dean/director/other designee signature approval and the appropriate vice president signature approval, and then email the completed form to [email protected] or send the hard copy via intercampus mail to Prakken Building, Room 261. Once the application is approved by the committee, please note that the application will still require signature approval by the president prior to the event moving forward. All departments will be notified regarding the status of their application (approved or not) not later than Friday, February 22, 2019 . As an additional resource, the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts at Kendall College of Art and Design has its own conference center liquor license. Departments seeking to conduct events at UICA should contact Megan Bylsma at [email protected] or (616) 454-7000 ext. 11, for more information.

Tips for faculty to respect our trans students from KCAD's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and the LGBTQ+ Resource Center January 14, 2019

Dear Ferris State and KCAD Faculty, Hello and happy new year! We hope you had a lovely winter break with lots of rest and relaxation to help prepare you for the term ahead.

First, a brief introduction: Stefanie Snider is an assistant professor of art history at Kendall College of Art and Design. She is also co-chair of theDiversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at KCAD and is writing on the committee’s behalf. Sarah Doherty is the LGBTQ+ Resource CenterCoordinator at Ferris State University. Since we are at the start of a new term, we thought this would be a good time to recommend some actions you

  • can take to respect and support transgender students you interact with, as well as all of your students who have designated preferred names thatdiffer from their legal names. We make these recommendations based on our experiences working with LGBTQ+ students, though not all studentswho use names other than their legal names are transgender, non-binary, queer, or gender nonconforming. There are numerous reasons whystudents might use other names; regardless of what they are, we need to respect them. Taking as a start the preferred name policy in place at FSU and KCAD we would like to give FSU and KCAD faculty some tools and tips to live up to the goals of the policy, andwork on embracing students’ correct pronouns (and names) at the start of - and throughout - each semester.

Deadnaming (using someone’s legal and/or former name instead of their chosen/ preferred name) and mispronouning people is profoundly alienatingand disrespectful, and students who are continually mispronouned or referred to by the wrong name experience that as a barrier to their engagementwith their classes and campus communities, which may affect student retention. The 2015 US Transgender Survey of over 27,000 trans adults foundthat 24% of trans adults experienced harassment in college, and 16% of the people who experienced harassment left school. Many transgenderstudents enter higher education with a history of exclusion, isolation, harassment, and even assault in high school, and are sensitive to the possibilityof further harassment and discrimination. Even at schools that have policies that protect trans students from discrimination, students can run intologistical barriers, practices, or subtle attitudes that can be alienating, so being able to fully participate in classes and feeling respected and supportedis crucial. It is powerful for both transgender and cisgender students to experience the basic respect of appropriate name and pronoun use in andoutside of the classroom. Faculty have some unique opportunities to set a respectful and inclusive tone for classes and maintain that respectful tonethroughout the semester, so we are sharing some strategies that we have used or have seen be successful. And if you do something different thatworks for your students please let us - and your other colleagues - know!

Because you cannot always know by looking at a student what their name or identity or appropriate pronouns might be, we recommend making some space for your students to let youknow how to refer to them respectfully. And because your students might be exploring what pronouns work for them, or might not want or be able to use their pronouns or names in allareas of their lives, we strongly recommend that you do this in a way that lets them maintain their privacy and lets them control to who they disclose their identities and correct namesand pronouns, on their own timelines. Here are some ways to do this:

    1. Email: Email your class through Blackboard to introduce the new term to the class and welcome them. In this email you can ask students to email you back with theirpreferred names, if different than what is on the university/ college roster, as well as with their pronouns. You might mention that you will keep this information confidential.

    2. Private index card/ Other private survey method: On one of the first days of class, distribute blank index cards or forms asking students for their information. This caninclude a myriad of things you might find useful to support them in class. For example, on the first day of class, Stefanie hands out index cards and asks for the following:Roster name and preferred name if different; pronouns; three things she can do to help each student succeed in this class during the term. Stefanie also notes that if studentsdon’t have three ideas or needs for success that’s ok, it’s just an opportunity to help her out in getting to know them better.

    3. Individual student meetings: If the class is small enough, you might want to schedule/ invite students to have brief one-on-one meetings with you during the first couple ofweeks of class to discuss anything they are concerned about or how you can support them in class, including names and pronouns.

    4. Statement in the syllabus: A brief syllabus statement can be a great way to reach your students. You might include this in an accessibility statement or in a separate sectionabout student support. For example, you might write something like, “I strive to support all students in their coursework and am happy to use your correct name and pronounsin class. Please contact me (in office hours or by email) to let me know your correct name and pronouns at any time.”

    5. Practice using your students’ appropriate names and pronouns! It can be challenging to check our assumptions and learn new thinking and speaking patterns, but we can doit with practice! Sarah is also totally happy to call you or visit your office or even meet off campus to practice using your students’ correct names and pronouns over and overuntil it becomes second nature for both of you, since that’s a strategy that has always helped her retrain her brain when friends and colleagues have trusted her with newinformation about their names or pronouns and she wanted to make sure to live up to that trust. Give her an email ([email protected]) or a call (231-591-2658)!

    6. Maintain the tone of respect: If your students have stated their name and pronouns for use in the classroom, help the rest of your students use the correct name andpronouns, and interrupt subtle or overt misgendering, deadnaming, or other forms of disrespect.

Students are always the final authorities on their names, pronouns, and identities. As it is our job to serve our students at FSU and KCAD, it is also outjob to respect their correct names and pronouns to serve them as best we can. Even after you implement one or more of the above suggestions, youmight make a mistake in class or outside of class. That’s ok - we’re all human! If you mess it up, apologize, fix your language, and move on. Don’tquestion a student about their name and/ or pronouns publicly, don’t tell your student that it’s too hard to call them by their name, and don’t lingerover your mistake. This calls less attention to both the student and your error and gets you back into the swing of your class discussion more quickly.Practicing the appropriate name and pronouns for your students can help you make fewer mistakes--with repetition, comes familiarity and comfort!

We have included a list of resources and further reading below--check out the pronoun practice tool!--and don’t forget that the FSU LGBTQ+ Resource Center (in the UniversityCenter Building 121, tucked under the stairs) and the KCAD Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee are here to help you out! Please do not hesitate to contact us forresources, more in-depth discussion, or help figuring out additional ways to support historically marginalized students on our campuses.

Thanks for reading, and have a great semester! Sarah Doherty and Stefanie Snider
