Congratulations to the Year 12 leavers. Their valedictory evening was very well done and congratulations to both the staff and students for a successful evening. It was lovely to meet with parents and chat. The timetable for 2018 is being completed and the school will have a 5 period day instead of the current 6 period day. Staffing is almost completed too, which is good news for planning purposes. It has been a pleasure to work with the staff and students at Katanning Senior High School last term and part of this term. You have a strong, committed Board that is working with the school to meet its priorities. I wish you all well for the remainder of the term and into the future. Thank you Carolyn Cook

KRBA AWARDS

PRINCIPALS REPORT

Katanning Senior High School students were given the opportunity again in 2017 to be a part of the Katanning Regional Business Association Awards (KRBA), held at Katanning Leisure Centre on 2 September 2017. KRBA have been very generous supporters of our students, by offering two separate awards in which they could be nominated. They also funded the awards and the tickets of finalists in attendance, with three finalists and their families present on the night.

The winner of the Workplace Learning Student of the Year 2017 was Zachary Anderson. Zachary was nominated by his supervisor at Shire of Katanning and had recently been selected as the successful applicant for a full time traineeship at the Shire. After completing two years of Workplace Learning in an administrative role, Zachary had shown an excellent attendance record and work ethic within his position.

Our finalist for the School based Trainee (SBT) of the Year Award 2017 was Jamie Ninyette. Jamie was nominated by his employer, Duraquip Gnowangerup, where he is currently completing an 18 month School based Traineeship in Engineering. After starting with Duraquip in March of this year as a Workplace Learning Student, Jamie was soon offered a SBT by his employers. His keen attitude and fantastic work ethic will take him far in life.

The winner of the School based Trainee of the Year Award 2017 was Ashley Evans. Ashley is currently completing a School based Apprenticeship with Black Stump Electrical Kojonup, and will transition into a full time Apprenticeship after completing Year 12. During 2017, Ash has shown a fantastic commitment to his workplace and TAFE study. He travels each week to TAFE in Albany, and has shown to be a conscientious and keen student. Ashley received nominations from both his employer and TAFE lecturer.

Congratulations to all of our nominees, it is fantastic to see our students rewarded for their hard work. A big thank you must go to the employers that continuously support our Workplace Learning Program, our students benefit greatly from the opportunities offered to them.

Mindfulness We can often spend time with full and tangled thoughts constantly whirling around our minds and then we miss the joy of the present moment. When you’re mindful, you’re able to pay attention to the present moment, and not get swept up thinking about the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness has been shown to help manage stress, build resilience and compassion, improve focus at work or in the classroom and can help with creativity and collaboration. Adults and children can benefit from mindfulness, especially those who have a busy or restless mind or are experiencing stress, anxiety or other mental health issues. To learn more about mindfulness for children and young people go to https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au or http://au.reachout.com . If you would like to try an online mindfulness meditation program for yourself or your child check out Smiling Mind.

KSHS WHOLE SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

On Thursday 21 September, the staff and students wrapped up Term 3 with a whole school assembly. This was an opportunity to recognise the achievements of various groups of students through presentation of the RAPT awards and YOHfest Participation certificates. The Principal, Mrs Carolyn Cook, addressed the assembly and thanked staff and students for their work throughout the term. The new Year 12 Student Leaders for 2018 were presented to the school. Congratulations go to year 11 students, Ratu Taylor and Rhianan Coffey who were elected to lead the student body next year. Science teacher, Mrs Julie Brown, also addressed the school, in her capacity as Youth Director of the Rotary Club of Katanning. Mrs Brown gave a brief outline of the Rotary Youth Exchange Program (RYEP) and the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN). Two RYPEN nominees, year 10 student, Caitlyn Fidler and former year 11 student, Jackson Mason recently attended an exciting weekend of Self discovery, Leadership and Team Building at the Baptist Camp in Serpentine. Both students agreed it was a “life changing experience”. Our current visiting exchange student, Gauthier Vignol, who was residing with the Brown family in Term 3, was introduced to the staff and students and spoke a little about his introduction to life in the Great Southern. It appeared to involve initiation into the joys of vegemite and allegiance to a particular AFL club! Any students interested in applying for either of these Rotary Youth Programs are encouraged to see Mrs Brown for further information. Staff and students then enjoyed watching a Spirit Day slideshow, which captured the highlights of this annual celebration. Congratulations to the following students who were RAPT Award recipients for Term 3:

Mrs Carmen Anderson

ACE Coordinator

In the English department we are very excited to be looking at the OLNA data that was released recently. There have been significant improvements for many students, however there is still much work to be done. To address student needs in relation to the OLNA testing, in English we design practice and assessment tasks to reflect the OLNA writing prompts. This allows students to become familiar with the layout of the test and remember they key components to look for. We also do varied reading comprehension tasks and assessments to expose students to material they may find on the testing. For example, maps, timetables, fables, contents pages etc. A key component of planning for these tasks and assessments is interrogating the OLNA results. We can look at the diagnostics of groups of students and individual students in order to tailor programming to their areas of need. This year we have been lucky enough to have been given time to undertake extra literacy support via Ms Katy Steed, Ms Lisa Clements and Mrs Terrie Hiddlestone. These ladies have been extracting students from selected classes to work intensively on their reading and/or writing skills. Not only has this seen an improvement in the literacy skills of students, it has also helped some of them to progress with the OLNA testing. Students seem to enjoy attending these sessions, and the efforts of these staff are much appreciated. Students are given an opportunity to complete practice tests online. This is the website and the log in details if you would like to have a look: Website for practice test: https://assess.scsa.wa.edu.au Username for practice test: 4028 Password for practice test: prac14 Students sit the OLNA testing if they achieved below Band 8 in NAPLAN. They have 8 opportunities to pass the test; March and September of Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13. If you would like more information regarding the testing, please contact me via the school 9821 9800. Mrs Carmen Anderson

On Thursday of Week 2 the Year 11/12 Drama class performed a dramatic reading of ‘Four Funerals and a Wedding’ by Marlene Magee for friends and family. The students did a fantastic job with the wide variety of characters (many students had multiple roles) and the show was enjoyed by everyone. After the main event the students played some improvisation games, where they have to create a character with a quirky personality very quickly. Again the results were hilarious. Thank you to everyone who came to support our talented class and well done to the students for a very memorable evening.

In week 4 the Year 9 Drama class will be performing ‘Frankenstein slept here’ by Tim Kelly. In conjunction with the Katanning Dramatic Society’s Youth Production of ‘Dracula’s Boarding House’, the students will be performing on Halloween (Tuesday 31st October) at 6pm in the town hall. Young people (and the young at heart) are welcome to dress in Halloween theme to add to the atmosphere of the plays. The shows (plus ‘The Way I Remember It’ are also on Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th of November in the Town Hall for a gold coin donation, starting at 6pm. Miss Sarah Watson Drama Teacher

BUSH RANGERS

Hi everyone, hope you’re ready for a big term! We finished off Term 3 with a hike on a spur trail of the Bibbulmun Track at Wellington Dam near the town of Collie. It was a huge weekend with lots of walking involved. Miss D’Souza and Mr McPhee took 7 cadets for the 12 km walk. Miss Watson and the remaining 14 cadets and I hiked in 3.5kms. One student’s comment as we were hiking up a big hill was, “Miss remind me that I am never going hiking again.” This was said not once, but every time we rested on the way up. Next day we hiked 3.5km down the hill and drove to Honeymoon Pool which is a great spot for camping and kayaking. We enjoyed a BBQ lunch and then kayaked against the current to learn a new skill.

Thanks to Mr McPhee’s guidance and patience we all arrived at the bridge and everyone enjoyed a very cold swim. Then back to the picnic site for a very cold swim and then 3.5km back up the hill; a big day in all but everyone did well. Then we cooked our dinner on trangia stoves and played camp games by the fire and spotlight in the trees. Next morning we had breakfast and packed up tents and trudged down the hill for the last time. I would like to thank Mr McPhee for coming along on camp, helping us adjust our packs so we could carry the heavy packs, and also to Nurse Sharon for joining us on the camp as well.

Just for something different on the way home we dropped into Gnomesville in Balingup; a site you can’t believe until you are there, and then stopped at a nice lake for lunch before travelling home. If ever you happen to visit try and find four gnomes that we left there to remember our trip. All were tired for the last week of school but thank you to Miss Watson for the experience; we definitely need to train a little bit more before the next hike. We have also been working hard at preparing the garden near the Follow the Dream house. I am happy to report that, after some hard work from the two wonderful gardeners Syd and Tyron and the cadets, shovelling manure, planting and mulching, we now have our first summer vegies in. Drop in some time and check how they’re growing. Mrs Terrie Hiddlestone Bush Rangers Leader

As part of the Family, Children and Community Course our students in the Home Economics Department sew and make kits for the DAYS FOR GIRLS project. With the generous support of the Rotary Club of Katanning this is the third year that we have been able to make a box full of kits. Our 2017 offering are destined for the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

“Every girl and woman has inherent worth and dignity. Days for Girls celebrates this by providing washable feminine hygiene solutions, health education and enterprises to help them reach the last milestone in their own communities. When girls and women have health, education, and opportunity, communities and our world are stronger. Thus far we’ve reached women and girls in 110+ countries. We are on target to reach 1 million women and girls by the end of 2017.”

INCLUSIVE LEARNING

TAFE Art Access Exhibition

On Friday, the last week of Term 3 our TAFE Art Access students attended an official opening by Cr Liz

Guidera for their exhibition at the Katanning Art Gallery. The very talented TAFE Art lecturer Mrs

SunJung Bloomer along with Education Assistant Ms Kerry Lucas provides our students weekly

guidance.

Students worked hard for 3 terms to create beautiful, one of a kind artwork which ranged from ceramics,

sculptures and drawings. Students proudly showed off their inspiring artwork to family, friends and

visitors followed by morning tea. Most of the students’ artwork was up for purchase and was quickly sold.

Art can be an outlet to communicate feelings and open up a whole new world

where the possibilities are endless!

WORKPLACE LEARNING

Great Southern Toyota 158 Clive Street Katanning Tainui commenced Workplace Learning with Great Southern Toyota at the beginning of Term 1 2017. In August Nui was signed up as a School Based Trainee, completing Certificate II in Automotive Vehicle Servicing through South Regional TAFE at Great Southern Toyota. As a School Based Trainee, Nui now gets to attend his Work Placement each week and be paid for his day! He has 18 months from the signing of his contract to complete his studies, and is well on his way, due to already completing a Certificate II in Automotive though the Katanning Senior High

School Trades Skills Training Centre this year. To be converted from a Workplace Learning Student to a School Based Trainee, students must show great work ethic and reliability in the workplace. Nui has been such a valuable member of the team at Toyota, that they were happy to offer him a paid traineeship so that he can continue at school and still gain valuable knowledge and insight into the automotive trade.

Katanning Panel and Paint 11 Claude Street Katanning Cooper commenced Workplace Learning with Katanning Panel and Paint in Term 1 2017 also. In May of this year, Cameron Sukiennik (Owner) decided that Cooper was demonstrating a keen attitude and eagerness to learn, and offered him a School Based Traineeship. Cooper is completing a Certificate II in Automotive Body Repair Technology through South Regional Tafe. Cooper is the first School Based Trainee to be taken on by Katanning Panel, and Cameron has found that the extra pair of hands in the workshop has been invaluable. He believes that by offering young people a pathway similar to that of his own, he can provide them with the opportunity to develop and grow in the industry. Training young people is something that Cameron enjoys, and with a busy and fast moving industry he understands the need for attracting and training staff locally. Tutoring As mentioned in the last newsletter, tutoring in week 10 was a little different. We ventured out of the house and completed tasks that were just a little different than normal but each with a specific focus.

On Tuesday we completed some Kahoot challenges. Kahoot is a game-based learning platform using multiple choice quizzes. Students participate in these quizzes using electronic devices such as iPads. These got the students to focus on reading questions and instructions and understand what they needed to do before trying to complete tasks. The questions were general knowledge but based on their tutoring activities and varied from spelling and vocabulary to maths and geography.

On Wednesday students focused on developing strategies as they completed a number of tasks designed to challenge the way they approach doing things. You may remember the show ‘Minute To Win It’. Students and tutors participated in several tasks like those on the show. The idea was that students took the time to think about how to best complete the task, aiming to do so first. Along with developing strategies students had to persevere as it often took more than one go to complete them.

On Thursday students participated in an Amazing Race style activity. Students formed teams of two and completed challenges racing each other around the school. In this activity students combined the skills practiced the days prior. They had to carefully read the instructions being sure to understand before they attempted tasks and had to employ strategies to try to get the tasks complete first.

First, students had to figure out a riddle which gave them the colour of a

balloon to pop for their clue to the next location.

Then one team member had to bounce ping pong balls into an egg maze

landing three in a row before they could receive their next clue.

Next, students had to launch marshmallows from the launching point and successfully land three

into a bucket balanced on their team mates head.

At the next stop students had to sort skittles (using only one hand) into their colours.

The second last stop students had to crack a code which gave them a name to a video file which

they had to play before they could head to the final destination.

The last challenge saw the students have to move a bubble from Point A through a hoop first in

order to win the game.

Each challenge had ‘must knows’ which when read carefully explained rules about the challenges but also gave the students tips on how they could develop strategies to complete the challenge. For example when the students had to get the bubble though the hoop they only need to create the bubble from the starting point they could try any method to move the bubble through the hoop that wouldn’t pop it. For example gently blowing the bubble towards the hoop or catching the bubble on the wand and moving it.

To ensure that your child/ren’s school bus transport requirements are passed along to SBS, it will be appreciated if you consider the following questions and take action where appropriate:

CHANGE TO CIRCUMSTANCES

Is your child changing schools in 2018, including changing from primary school to high school and will need to catch the bus?

Are you moving address before the 2018 school year commences?

Do you have an additional child that will require orange school bus transport for the first time in 2018?

If you have answered YES to any of these questions you will need to submit a new application for Transport Assistance. This can be completed online through the SBS website at: www.schoolbuses.wa.gov.au

You are not able to use the Change of Details form on the website in place of submitting a new application.

New applications need to be submitted to SBS as soon as possible and preferably no later than 3 November 2017. Applications lodged after this date may not be processed in time for the 2018 year and in this case you may need to provide private transport.
