THE MATCH-UP For a second consecutive season, New England will make a November visit to Arrowhead for a match-up against the Chiefs. Kansas City is seeking to snap a three-game losing streak to the Patriots. The Chiefs suffered their first-ever loss at Arrowhead to New England last season by a 27-19 margin (11/22/04). Despite that setback, the Chiefs are still 3-1 all-time at Arrowhead against the Patriots as last year’s contest marked New England’s first victory in Kansas City since ’64. KC enters this week’s contest after registering a convincing 45-17 victory at Houston (11/20). RB Larry Johnson set a franchise single- game record with 211 rushing yards in that contest, breaking the previous standard of 200 yards established by RB Barry Word vs. Detroit (10/14/90). Those 211 ground yards are the highest total by any player in the league this season. In fact, Johnson has cracked the 100- yard barrier in the first half of back-to-back games, a first in KC history. The Patriots have registered consecutive victories for the first time this season and come to Kansas City after a 23-16 win at Miami (11/13) and a 24-17 home triumph vs. New Orleans (11/20). The last four games in the Chiefs-Patriots series have been decided by an average of just 4.8 points per game with NE holding a slim 112-97 scoring edge. All four of those contests have been decided by eight points or less, with three of those games coming down to the closing seconds. The Chiefs have never suffered back-to-back home losses to the Patriots and a victory this week will be especially important for Kansas City if it hopes to stay competitive in the AFC postseason chase. While both teams enter Sunday’s game with identical 6-4 records, New England currently holds a two-game edge over Buffalo (4-6) atop the AFC East standings. Meanwhile, the Chiefs are two games behind division-leading Denver (8-2) with a pivotal AFC West contest vs. the Broncos awaiting next week at Arrowhead. Up next for New England is a division home game against the N.Y. Jets (12/4). THE SERIES Kansas City has lost its last three match-ups against New England, but the Chiefs still hold a 15-11-3 (.569) all-time edge in the 29 previous regular season meetings between the two clubs. New England’s three- game winning streak is the longest by either team in the 46-year history of this series that dates back to ’60. Kansas City’s last victory against the Patriots was a 16-14 win at Arrowhead (10/21/99) when K Adam Vinatieri’s potential game-winning 32-yard FG hit the right upright. The Chiefs own a 3-1 record at Arrowhead vs. New England. The Patriots registered their first win at Arrowhead and their initial victory in KC since ’64 with a 27-19 decision in last year’s Monday Night Football contest (11/22/04). All three of the Chiefs victories vs. the Patriots at Arrowhead have come by seven points or less. The last meeting between these two squads at Gillette Stadium came when the Chiefs rebounded from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to send the game into overtime (9/22/02). However, the Patriots won the coin toss and registered a 41-38 OT victory thanks to a 35-yard FG from Vinatieri. KC is 9-3-1 (.731) all-time in regular season home games vs. the Patriots. Dating back to AFL play, the Chiefs have won five of their last six home contests vs. New England and prior to last season hadn’t dropped a home game to the Patriots since losing a 31-24 decision at Municipal Stadium (12/6/64). KC and NE have split their eight contests since ’90. Dating back to the AFL-NFL merger in ’70, the two teams have also split their 12 meetings. Three Chiefs-Patriots games have ended in ties, more than any other opponent Kansas City has faced in its history. The Chiefs and Patriots have never faced one another in postseason competition. Kansas City has faced every other original AFL team in the playoffs except for New England. REGULAR SEASON GAME #11 KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (6-4) VS. HOME TEAM IN ALL CAPS

REMEMBERING HANK STRAM (1923-2005) This season the Chiefs are remembering Hank Stram, who

passed away on July 4th, by wearing a helmet sticker with his initials during the entire 2005 campaign. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2003, Stram served as the franchise’s head coach from 1960-74, compiling a 124-76-10 regular season record and a 5-3 playoff mark. He guided the club to three AFL titles and a win in Super Bowl IV.

Stram’s many contributions to the game include the two-tight end offense, the stack defense and the moving pocket. Perhaps the most fitting compliment paid to Stram came courtesy of QB Len Dawson at Stram’s HOF enshrinement in 2003. “I wear a Super Bowl ring on one hand and a Hall of Fame ring on the other,” Dawson remarked. “I know I wouldn’t have had either one if it hadn’t been for this guy – Hank Stram.”

REMEMBERING P JERREL WILSON (1941-2005) The Chiefs also lost another link to their Super Bowl IV squad this

off-season when P Jerrel Wilson passed away on April 9th. Wilson served as the club’s punter from 1963-77 and still holds an NFL record by leading the league in punting four times (’65, ’68, ’72-73). A member of the AFL’s All-Time Team, he was inducted into the Chiefs Hall of Fame in ’88.

Wilson came to the Chiefs from Southern Mississippi, the same school that also produced longtime Raiders P Ray Guy. Arguably two of the finest punters in pro football history, Wilson’s 43.4-yard career average was actually a full yard better than Guy’s 42.4-yard mark, leading Rick Cleveland of the Clarion (MS) Ledger to say this of Wilson after his death: “He was Ray Guy before Ray Guy.”

KANSAS CITY AWARDED A FUTURE SUPER BOWL On November 16th, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced

that NFL owners had passed a proposal to bring the Super Bowl to Kansas City in a year between 2012 and 2021. The actual date will be at the discretion of the National Football League. The announcement was made at the fall session of the league’s annual meeting in Kansas City. The awarding of the Super Bowl was contingent on two key elements according to Chiefs Founder Lamar Hunt. Arrowhead Stadium, which opened in ’72 is one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL. Arrowhead must be renovated, including a climate-controlling “Rolling Roof” structure. The awarding of a Super Bowl would also require the city and the team to meet all the bid specifications laid out by the league.

RB LARRY JOHNSON’S RECORD-SETTING DAY RB Larry Johnson racked up 211 rushing yards at Houston (11/20),

breaking the previous KC record of 200 yards established by RB Barry Word vs. Detroit (10/14/90). Johnson’s 211 yards are the highest total in the NFL in a game this season and were the most by a player in the league since SD’s LaDainian Tomlinson had 243 yards vs. Oakland (12/28/03). His 36 rushing attempts vs. the Texans were the third-highest single-game tally in KC history. Johnson had two rushing TDs at Houston, giving the Chiefs a 6-0 record in games when he has two or more rushing TDs. Johnson piled up his record-breaking 211 ground yards behind the starting offensive line of LT Jordan Black, LG Brian Waters, C Casey Wiegmann, RG Will Shields and RT John Welbourn.

Dick Vermeil was named the ninth head coach in Chiefs

history on January 12, 2001 following head coaching stints with Philadelphia (’76-82) and St. Louis (‘97-99). He is one of just four coaches in NFL history to lead two different teams to the Super Bowl and has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year.

The Calistoga, California native began his NFL coaching career with the L.A. Rams (’69, ‘71-73) serving as the team’s special teams, RBs, and QBs coach and offensive coordinator. During his tenure as head coach in Philadelphia (’76-82), he compiled a 54-47 record. In ’78, Vermeil guided the Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. He then led the ’80 Eagles to a 12-4 record to earn a trip to Super Bowl XV.

Vermeil returned to the sidelines as the head coach of St. Louis for three seasons (’97-99), guiding the Rams to a 13-3 record in ’99, concluding the year with a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. A standout quarterback at San Jose State, Vermeil served as an assistant at Stanford (’65-68) and UCLA (’70) before taking over the head coaching duties for the Bruins from ’74-75. In ’75, he led UCLA to a 23-10 victory over #1 ranked Ohio State in the Rose Bowl.

Chiefs-Patriots Match-Up Showcases QBs Trent Green, Tom Brady by Pete Moris

Chiefs, Patriots Traditionally Solid Second-Half Teams Dating back to the 2001 season, both KC and NE have traditionally

performed well in the second half of the NFL season. Over that span, KC is 14-3 in home contests played after November 1st. Over that same timeframe, New England is 31-5 (.861) in regular season games played after November 1st, including a 15-3 mark on the road.

Green, Brady Are Among the NFL’s Elite Quarterbacks QBs Trent Green and Tom Brady are two of the top-rated passers in

NFL history. Brady is seventh in NFL history with an 88.7 rating, while Green is eighth at 87.5. Only three QBs owning longer active starting streaks than Green (74) and Brady (72). QB Brett Favre is expected to make his 215th straight start on MNF vs. Minnesota (11/21). *Prior to Monday Night Football More Passing Stats on KC’s Trent Green, NE’s Tom Brady When QBs Trent Green and Tom Brady are at the top of their game,

their teams are typically tough to beat. The Chiefs own a 12-1 record at Arrowhead when Green compiles a 100.0 passer rating or better. Last week Green had a 108.4 rating in a 45-17 win at Houston (10/21). In his last two home games Green has completed 37 of 60 passes (61.7%) for 416 yards with two TDs and no INTs, good for a 93.5 rating.

Dating back to the 2002 campaign, Green has heated up down the stretch at Arrowhead. He has posted an 11-2 record as a starter in November and December home games over that span, completing 268 of 393 passes (68.2%) for 3,364 yards with 22 TDs and just five INTs, numbers that translate into a sizzling 107.8 rating. Green has 104 TD passes with KC and needs just two more to overtake QB Bill Kenney (105) for the second-highest career total in Chiefs history.

When Brady is at his best, the Patriots are also difficult to defeat. New England is 27-1 in regular season play when Brady boasts a 100.0+ rating or better. That lone loss was a 40-21 setback vs. Indianapolis (11/7) when Brady had a 108.9 rating. Prior to that contest, you have to go back to a 27-21 loss at Denver (9/7/98) to find a game the Patriots lost when their starting QB posted a 100.0+ rating. Brady owns five games with a 100.0+ rating this season, including a 111.6 rating vs. NO (11/20).

New England also owns a 10-1 regular season record when QB Tom Brady posts a 300-yard passing game. Brady is 2-0 as a starter against the Chiefs, topping the 300-yard barrier in both of those contests. Over that two-game span with KC, Brady has completed 56 of 80 (70.0%) of his passes for 725 yards with five TDs and one INT, good for a 113.8 rating. Brady will face an improving Chiefs pass defense that has gone three straight games without allowing a 300-yard passer. KC’s defense has allowed an average of just 163.7 passing ypg over its last three contests.

KC Seeks to Sustain Its Supremacy in Rushing Defense KC has not allowed an individual 100-yard rusher in 17 consecutive

games, the second-longest active streak in the NFL behind only Pittsburgh (22). Last week, KC allowed 78 rushing yards at Houston (11/13), marking the seventh time this season that KC has held an opponent to under 100 team rushing yards. NE has been held to under 100 team rushing yards in eight games this season. KC has permitted just 287 rushing yards in four home games in 2005, an average of just 71.8 ypg. In fact, KC has not permitted a rushing TD at home in 2005, joining Chicago as the only other team to accomplish that feat. KC has allowed 21 runs of 10+ yards, a mark that ties as the sixth-lowest tally in the NFL.

Dating back to 2000 when Bill Belichick took over as the Patriots head coach, NE owns a 15-1 record in games with an individual 100-yard rusher. The Patriots only loss in such a circumstance was a 28-29 defeat at Miami (12/20/04) when RB Corey Dillon had 121 yards. In his lone career start vs. KC, Dillon had 98 rushing yards and two rushing TDs in last year’s 27-19 Patriots victory at Arrowhead (11/22/04). Active Streaks, Most Cons. Getting a Lead is Paramount For KC Against the Patriots Dating back to 2001, New England is 38-2 (.950) in regular season

play when leading at halftime and 44-1 (.978) when leading after three quarters. The only game that New England has lost under Bill Belichick when leading entering the fourth quarter was a 29-28 setback at Miami (12/20/04) when the Patriots held a 21-17 advantage after three quarters.

The Chiefs have been adept at getting off to good starts in 2005. KC’s defense has held seven offenses scoreless in the first quarter this season. The Chiefs have allowed just three points in the first quarter of their four home games in 2005. KC’s defense has not permitted an opposing team to score a TD on its opening possession this season, making the Chiefs one of just five NFL clubs (CHI, DEN, SD, TB) to accomplish that feat in 2005. KC has allowed just one FG on its opening defensive drives this season.

KC has actually led after the first quarter of its last two meetings with the Patriots, but hasn’t held a lead against New England entering the fourth quarter since the club’s last victory over the Patriots, a 16-14 win at Arrowhead (10/10/99) when KC led 13-7 after three quarters. KC is 3-1 at home this season and owns a 45-6 (.882) record at Arrowhead when leading at halftime dating back to ’95, including a 2-0 mark in 2005.

Gonzalez’s Stretch of 50-Catch Seasons is Best Among NFL TEs. Six-time Pro Bowl TE Tony Gonzalez owns the most catches (624)

and receiving yards (7,460) in Chiefs history. He needs just three more TD catches to bypass WR Otis Taylor (57) for first place in franchise annals. Shannon Sharpe (815) and Ozzie Newsome (662) are the only TEs in NFL history who own more career receptions than Gonzalez. Gonzalez has 54 receptions in 2005, making him the first tight end in NFL history to register eight consecutive seasons with 50 or more catches.

Chiefs-Patriots Turnover Stats The Chiefs are 17-2 (.895) when posting a positive turnover mark

dating back to 2003. Going back to a 49-0 win vs. Arizona (12/1/02) when KC was +3, the Chiefs own a 10-game winning streak at Arrowhead when owning a positive turnover ratio. The Chiefs are 40-4 (.909) at Arrowhead with a positive takeaway margin in regular season play dating back to ’95. KC owns a +20 turnover differential (48 takes/28 gives) over its last 23 regular season home games. NE owns a 42-5 (.894) regular season record with an even or postive turnover margin dating back to 2001. In fact, the Patriots have won 24 consecutive games with a positive turnover ratio, including a streak of 12 consecutive road victories when positive.

The 21-Point Barrier is the Magic Number in This KC-NE Clash KC has won 19 of its last 20 games when holding its foes to 21 points

or less. Dating back to a 19-7 win vs. Seattle (11/25/01), the Chiefs have won 16 consecutive games at Arrowhead when holding opponents to 21 or less. Meanwhile, NE has won 24 consecutive games when holding its foes to 21 points or less, the second-longest active streak in the NFL behind only Indianapolis (32). The Patriots have been held to 21 points or less in seven of their eight regular season losses since the start of the 2003 campaign, including all four of their losses in 2005.

More Rushing Notes, Other Chiefs-Patriots Statistical Tidbits KC is 12-4 (.750) when producing a 100-yard rusher dating back to

2003, including a 6-1 mark when RB Larry Johnson rushes for 100+ yards. Johnson has hit the century mark in the first half of his last two games, becoming the first NFL RB to accomplish that feat since Detroit RB Kevin Jones (12/5/04 - 12/12/04). Johnson has averaged 102.5 ypg in KC’s six wins in 2005. NE is 8-10 under Bill Belichick when allowing an individual 100-yard rusher, including a 1-3 mark in 2005. Dating back to 2002, KC is 16-1 at Arrowhead when scoring two or more rushing TDs.

DE Jared Allen has 16.0 sacks in 2004-05, the third-highest tally by a player in his two seasons with the Chiefs. Allen has six forced fumbles in 2005 and needs just three more to overtake Thomas’ single-season team record of eight in ’92 … NE had an NFL-best 28-4 (.875) regular season record from 2003-04. The 2005 Patriots have already suffered four losses.

Needing a win to keep pace with the rest of the AFC for the playoff hunt, the Chiefs put together an impressive effort in Houston. Kansas City exploded out to a 31-7 halftime lead with scores from both sides of the ball before closing out a 45-17 win over the Houston Texans. RB Larry Johnson led the Chiefs offensive stampede with a huge night. Johnson established a Chiefs single-game rushing record with 211 yards on 36 carries for the night. With a 15-yard fourth-quarter carry, the third-year back eclipsed RB Barry Word’s previous mark of 200 yards established vs. Detroit (10/14/90). Kansas City’s defense also came up big, holding Houston to just 259 total yards and forcing three turnovers. The Chiefs opened up the scoring on their first possession of the game and didn’t let up until they had posted a season-high 45 points. After K Lawrence Tynes got the scoring barrage started with a 35-yard field goal, Johnson began going to work on his record-setting evening. Taking advantage of the NFL’s lowest-ranked rushing defense, Johnson scored on an impressive 23-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter for a 10-0 lead. Despite being dominated in total yardage (131-24) through the first quarter, the Texans managed to hang around thanks to a 99-yard kickoff return TD from rookie WR Jerome Mathis. The Kansas City quick-strike offense of the past few years re-emerged midway through the second quarter. In just a three-minute span the Chiefs jumped out to a 24-7 lead thanks to a pair of quick touchdowns by Kennison and Johnson. First, QB Trent Green capped a four-play, 71-yard drive by finding Kennison on a 26-yard TD pass. The 12th-year passer finished completing 19 of 29 passes for 220 yards with three TDs on the night. On the ensuing possession, Chiefs S Greg Wesley jarred the ball free from WR Andre Johnson, allowing CB Eric Warfield to scoop up the Texans fumble at the Houston 43-yard line. Four plays later, Johnson found the end zone for the second time with a one-yard dive, vaulting KC to a 24-7 lead late in the first half. Just as the Texans were trying to mount a late first-half scoring drive, Warfield intercepted a pass and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown and a 31-7 halftime advantage. Houston drew within 31-17 with 10 unanswered points in the third quarter. A CB Lewis Sanders INT set up a three-yard TD run from RB Domanick Davis. After a Kansas City punt, Houston strung together another drive, resulting in a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. That would be the end of its rally. Kansas City stomped out the Texans comeback hopes by pounding out, 12-play drive that ate 7:04 off he clock and resulted in Kennison’s second touchdown of the night, a seven-yard pass from Green. The Chiefs weren’t done yet. Green would find WR Samie Parker on a six-yard scoring strike to cap the runaway 45-17 win.

GAME NOTES• TE Tony Gonzalez became the first tight end in NFL history to register eight consecutive seasons (1998-05) with 50 or more receptions.• K Lawrence Tynes extended his streak of games with a made FG to 13 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in franchise history.• KC’s defense permitted Houston to convert just one third-down conversion on 11 attempts.

The Patriots registered their first victory in Kansas City since ’64 as New England defeated the Chiefs by a 27-19 count in a Monday Night Football clash at Arrowhead Stadium. NE won the toss and 10 plays later, RB Corey Dillon scored on a five-yard TD as the Patriots tied an NFL record by scoring the first points of a game in their 15th consecutive contest. The Chiefs responded with a 44-yard K Lawrence Tynes FG on Kansas City’s first drive and then took a short-lived 10-7 lead when QB Trent Green lofted a beautiful 65-yard touchdown pass down the far sideline to WR Eddie Kennison. However, NE retaliated with a one-yard TD dive by Dillon to retake the lead for good at 14-10. A 37-yard K Adam Vinatieri FG pushed the Patriots lead to 17-10 late in the second quarter. The game’s key play came as the Chiefs faced third-and-goal at the nine-yard line with 0:54 remaining in the first half. Green’s pass intended for TE Tony Gonzalez was picked off in the end zone by S Rodney Harrison despite vehement protestations from KC that a defensive foul had occurred on the play. However, no flags were thrown and the Patriots escaped unscathed, taking their 17-10 lead into the locker room. The Chiefs opened the second half with a monster 15-play drive that ate 8:15 off the clock, but again they couldn’t find the end zone. RB Derrick Blaylock was stopped on a third-and-one from the four, setting up a 24-yard FG that cut the NE lead to 17-13. But once again, the Patriots immediately answered. Set up by a 46-yard pass to WR David Patten, NE QB Tom Brady hit WR Deion Branch for a 26-yard TD to push the Patriots edge to 24-13. Brady finished the game with 315 passing yards. The Patriots made a rare mistake early in the fourth quarter, giving the Chiefs a glimmer of hope. LB Fred Jones forced a Dillon fumble that was recovered by DT Lional Dalton at the KC three-yard line. Green – who finished the contest with 381 passing yards – orchestrated a precision 11-play, 97-yard TD march that concluded with his second scoring strike to Kennison, this time from 26 yards out. However, KC's two-point pass attempt fell incomplete, putting the score at 24-19 with 6:13 remaining. NE marched the ball deep into KC territory, but the Chiefs defense limited the Patriots to a FG, leaving the offense 1:46 on the clock for a potential game-tying drive. But KC's comeback hopes were dashed when Green was sacked on fourth-and-six at the Chiefs 26-yard line, allowing the Patriots to run out the clock on a 27-19 win.

GAME NOTES• The Chiefs produced 400+ yards of total offense in their fifth consecutive game, a first in franchise history.• QB Trent Green registered his fourth straight 300-yard passing game, tying QB Bill Kenney (’83) for the longest streak in team annals.
