ITS A SMALL WORLD.

Big environmental issues start at the ground level – in our homes, in our

businesses, on our streets, among our families, and within our native wildlife.

Individuals can spark change and start positive trends to improve the quality

of life for every person, plant, and animal. Protecting the environment and

preserving resources requires a holistic approach. Everyone can help.

The following environmental organizations have been reviewed by The Greater

Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) in the recent past.

and promote environmentally responsible choices through experience and education.

The Nature Center incorporates ecology, natural history, science, social studies and

sustainable living into its programs. More than 10,000 children and 80,000 adults visit

the Nature Center or participate in its educational programs each year.

Digging In . . .. . . with a curriculum that asks the right questionsJim Eichenberger

The old joke asks, “How do you confuse a gold miner?” The answer, of course, is that you

show him two shovels and tell him to take his pick! But there is a problem with this story.

(Other than it is a terrible pun!) While the miner is puzzling, he is not digging. The same is true with students who seek to mine the treasures of God’s Word. When they sit

with dazed expressions on their faces, they are not digging. Curriculums that ask the wrong

questions will keep them from obtaining the riches they seek. Students may wrongly label the

Bible as boring, confusing, or irrelevant, when they are merely perceiving that the methods

used to teach God’s Word fit one or more of those descriptions. Let’s briefly examine the kinds

of questions one might find in Bible study curriculums. . .

Animals enrich our lives in so many ways, yet far too often they are abused and

neglected. Animal welfare organizations work toward the same goal: a world in

which there are no unwanted, homeless, neglected, abandoned, or mistreated

animals. Cats and dogs are often the ambassadors for other species because

they serve as companions to so many people. They introduce us to the concept

of animal welfare and foster a humane attitude toward all animals, wild and

domestic. By improving the lives of animals, animal-related organizations enrich

the lives of all.

The following animal welfare organizations have been reviewed by The Greater

Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) in the recent past.

Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden was established in 1873 and is the second

oldest zoo in the U.S. Its mission is “creating adventure, conveying knowledge,

conserving nature, and serving community.” The Zoo’s major programs include:

exhibits that draw more than one million visitors annually; education programs,

including 300,000 elementary school students who visit on field trips each year, as well

as the Zoo Academy, a full-time high school serving 40 students on the grounds of the

Zoo; and the Lindner Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife

(CREW), with 34 projects underway on five continents. The Zoo is recognized as one of

the top three zoos in the country and was rated the top attraction in Cincinnati in the

2004 Zagat Survey.
