5 Community Centre of Kandava* and Art Gallery “Vējspārns” (28 Lielā Street, tel. + 371 63122789). The Community Centre of Kandava has its home in the former Commonwealth Society Centre, which was established in 1909. Back in the day, a choir was run there, and theatre plays were staged. The building was reconstructed in 1989. The visitors’ attention is drawn by the interior in the Grand and Small hall carved in Karelian birch. On the second floor of the building hosts the art gallery “Vējspārns”, where the guests can enjoy exhibitions of various artists.

6 Kandava Regional Museum, Centre of Crafts and Art Gallery (11 Talsu Street, tel. +371 26667031). The building was constructed in 1887 to serve the needs of a hospital. Later, a German school and a warehouse were set up there. For more than 40 years the building was used by a bank, which left a unique exhibit item for the museum – a safe – box. The permanent exhibitions tell about the town`s history. The „Red corner” bears witness of the Soviet times in Kandava, a memorial room is created for the repressed regional inhabitants, and also a range of various thematic exhibitions are organised. Tasting of acorn coffee and svilpene porridge. Excursion with historic and theatrical elements and creative workshops. The gallery exhibits works by both Latvian artists and students of the art schools.

7 Kandava Roman Catholic Church (2 Liepu Street, tel. + 371 28334158). The church was opened in 2003 and it

is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe. The congregation members without any remuneration reconstructed a residential home into a church. The visitors’ attention is attracted by the 19th century altar with two rotating altarpieces – Resurrection of the Christ and a copy of the Virgin Guadalupe icon from Mexico. A bell tower is constructed next to the church. A beautiful view of the town opens up from the tower.

8 Couronian/Ancestors’ castle mound. Over the time, the castle mound has earned several names – Couronian, Ancestors’, Kandava castle mound, Church Hill, even Devil’s Bed, because the shape of the mound resembles a big bed with a pillow. It is situated on the right bank of the Abava river valley. Couronians had their settlements there during the 12th and 13th century, which is witnessed by discovered ancient artefacts.

9 A bridge over Abava. Sculpture „Whirpool” (O.Feldbergs, 2012). In Kandava, the oldest boulder bridge in Latvia crosses over the river Abava. Up to 1873, people crossed Abava with a ferry, but pedestrians could cross it on a plank-way. The bridge was constructed on the ground. After its construction, a new river bed was dug for Abava, and the old one was filled up. The bridge has four valves and it is 66 m long. Construction of the bridge was financed by the Zemīte Manor baron – Theodore von Fircks.

18 A memorial plate for Stalinism victims. The monument was opened and consecrated in June 1990. It was dedicated to those inhabitants of Kandava exiled to Siberia, who before being sent into exile were held captive here.

19 Lake Teteriņi. A small lake surrounded by a pine forest, where sometimes a swan couple nests. A pool has been made owing to the creek that flows out of the lake.

20 Fire-fighters’ depot and Plague Hill / Old Cemetery. After the destructive fires (1872) in Kandava, a fire-fighters’ depot was constructed in 1902. The building was reconstructed in the 20-ties, when fire engines were purchased. There is the Plague Hill behind the depot. It got its name from the plague epidemics of 1710. At that time, a church was located at the hill, around which all deceased local residents were buried. Out of 600 inhabitants, only 2 survived. In order for water not to wash away the old cemetery and to avoid from spreading infection, it is secured with a masonry wall.

21 Old School. Viewpoint to the Abava river valley. Skate Park. The building was constructed from 1929 till 1936 and it is called to honour the prominent Latvian linguist Kārlis Mīlenbahs, because he started his schooling in Kandava. As an architectural monument, the building is included on the list of 100 protected objects of the European Cultural Heritage. In 1996, the building was awarded a special European Cultural Heritage flag.

22 Old Town. Old Town Market Square. Historical Market Square is situated in the Old Town centre. During the medieval times, craftsmen and traders settled in the square and pedestrian, riders’, and drivers’ roads branched away from the square. In 1870 and 1881, the town built in wood was destroyed in fires. Afterwards, the buildings were constructed only in brick and masonry.

23 The wing of wind. The Lielā Street is approximately 1 km long. Its steepest slope is called Wing of Wind (Vējspārns). Back in the day, a windmill was located on one of the inclines. On this street, the lower parts of the buildings have one extra storey. The cobblestone pavement, auxiliary buildings, closed-off yards, and boulder walls create an ancient feeling here. Painters have become rather fond of this part of the town.

24 Sports centre of the Agriculture Technical School of Kandava (Daigones Street, tel. +371 63122502). Sculptures of the Little Mermaid and Neptune in the pool. The sports centre (1959) is a popular place for the local residents and guests to spend leisure time. During the summer weekends, various events are organised here. It is allowed to swim free of charge in the pool or in the nearby Lake Teteriņi. There is also a diving tower (10 m). The Little Mermaid and the almighty Neptune are watching over the swimmers.

Sehenswürdigkeiten in Kandava1 Naturpark „Abavas senleja” (Tel. + 371 28396830). Besonders

landschaftliches Territorium – Fluss-, Wiesen – und Hanglandschaften. Das Tal ist 30 bis 40 m tief und etwa 300 m breit. Das Territorium ist durch seine große Vielfalt an biologischer Natur (mehr als 800 Pflanzenarten) bekannt. Naturpfaden, bedeutende geschützte historische und Natur-objekte.

2 Ritterburgberg / Ruinen der Livländischen Ordensburg. Pulverturm / Die Skulptur „Der Ritter Zīļuks” ( , 2011). Einst stand hier die Burg des Livländischen Ordens. Die Errichtung der Burg begann 1254 und wurde mehr als 50 Jahre fortgesetzt. Die Burg war auch der Sitz des Landrichters. Später herrschte in der Burg der Herzog von Kurland. Sei sie noch bis 1750 bewohnt gewesen. Der Pulverturm ist ein massiver quadratischer Bau mit 2 m dicken Wänden, der bis heute ein Geheimnis über seine Entstehung und seine ursprüngliche Anwendung wahrt. Es ist bekannt, dass zu der Zeit des Herzogs Jakobs im Turm Schießpulver hergestellt und aufbewahrt wurde. Im 19. Jh. wurde hier ein Gefängnis untergebracht. Eine kurze Zeit haben hier Menschen auch in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jh. gewohnt. Eine Sage erzählt, dass ein geheimer Gang den Pulverturm mit dem Weinkeller der Burg verbindet.

3 Pfad durch den Fingerstrauch-Sumpf. Das Schutzgebiet Fingerstrauch-Sumpf („Čužu purvs”) steht seit 1924 unter staatlichem Schutz. Der Pfad ist im Sumpf angelegt, wo auf der Fläche von 96 ha der Fingerstrauch (Pentaphylloides fruticosa) wild wächst. Nirgendwo anders in Lettland ist diese gelb blühende Pflanze auf einer so groβen Fläche zu finden. Der Pfad ist markiert. Die Gesamtlänge beträgt ~ 4 km. In der Nähe befindet sich ein Schwefelbrunnen, dessen Heileigenschaften bei Behandlung von Rheuma Žanis Dannenbergs entdeckt hat. 1903 wurde eine Heilanstalt eröffnet, die bis 1940 funktionierte.

4 Evangelisch-lutherische Kirche von Kandava (Baznicas Straβe 5, Tel. +371 28277286, www.kandavasdraudze.lv) und Friedhof. Die jetzige evangelisch-lutherische Kirche ist 1736 erbaut. Bemerkenswert sind die alten Holzschnitzereien aus der Barockzeit, die 1864 gebaute Orgel sowie das Altarbild und Kunstgegenstände, die in kirchlichen Ritualen verwendet werden. Die evangelisch-lutherische Kirche von Kandava ist ein nationales Architekturdenkmal. Vor der Kirche liegt der Kirchenfriedhof, auf dem Eltern und Schwestern des berühmten lettischen Sprachwissenschaftlers Kārlis Mīlenbahs ruhen.

5 Kulturhaus von Kandava* und Kunstgalerie „Vējspārns” („Windflügel”) (Liela Straβe 28, Tel. +371 63122789). Das Kulturhaus von Kandava befindet sich im ehemaligen Vereinshaus der freundschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit, das 1909 eröffnet wurde. Damals hatte das Vereinshaus ein Chor, und hier wurden Theaterstücke aufgeführt. 1989 wurde das Gebäude umgebaut. Besichtigungswert ist das Interieur aus der Karelischen Birke im Groβen und im Kleinen Saal. Im ersten Stock des Gebäudes ist die Kunstgalerie „Vējspārns” („Windflügel”) eingerichtet, wo verschiedene Künstler ausstellen.

6 Gebietsmuseum Kandava, Das Handwerkerzentrum des Landkreises Kandava und Die Kunstgalerie (Talsu Straße 11, Tel. +371 26667031). Das Gebäude wurde 1887 als Krankenhaus erbaut. Später befanden sich hier die deutsche Schule und Lagerräume. Mehr als 40 Jahre war hier eine Bank untergebracht, die dem Museum einen unikalen Museumsgegenstand übergab – den Safe. Zu b e s i c h t i g e n s i n d a u c h verschiedene thematische Ausstellungen. „Die Rote Ecke“ erinnert an die Sowjetzeit in Kandava, zum Andenken der deportierten Stadtbewohner ist ein Gedenkraum eingerichtet. Degustation von Eichelkaffee und Brei „Svilpene“ Historische theatralisierte Führung und kreative Workshops. In der Galerie werden sowohl die Werke der lettischen Künstler als auch die von den Schülern der Kunstschule von Kandava ausgestellt.

7 Römisch-katholische Kirche von Kandava (Liepu Straβe 2, Tel. +371 28334158). Die Kirche wurde 2003 eingeweiht und ist der Muttergottes von Guadalupe gewidmet. Die Kirchengemeinde hat unentgeltlich ein Wohnhaus in die Kirche umgewandelt. Bemerkenswert ist der Altar aus dem 19. Jh. mit zwei rotierenden Gemälden – „Auferstehung von Christus“ und Kopie des Heiligenbilds „Muttergottes von Guadalupe” aus Mexico. Neben der Kirche ist ein Glockenturm mit Aussicht auf die Stadt errichtet.

8 Burgberg der Kuren/der Ahnen. Im Laufe der Zeit hat der Burgberg viele Namen erhalten – Kuren-, Ahnenburgberg, Burgberg von Kandava, Kirchenberg, sogar Teufelsbett, weil die Form des Bergs an ein Riesenbett mit einem Kissen erinnert. Der Berg liegt am rechten Ufer des Tals der Abava. Die Kuren haben diesen Ort im 12. -13. Jh. bewohnt. Davon zeugen die Altertümer-Funde.

9 Brücke über die Abava. Die Skulptur „Der Strudel“ (O.Feldbergs, 2012). In Kandava führt die älteste Feldsteinbrücke Lettlands über den Fluss Abava. Vor der Errichtung der Brücke im Jahr 1873 setzte man mit einer Fähre hin- und herüber, Fußgänger hatten Stege. Die Brücke wurde auf dem Festland erbaut. Nach der Errichtung der

Brücke wurde für die Abava ein neues Strombett gegraben, das alte Bett wurde zugeworfen. Die Brücke hat vier Gewölbe, ihre Länge beträgt 66 m. Der Bau der Brücke von Kandava wurde vom Freiherrn des Landguts Zemite Theodor Baron von Fircks finanziert.

10 Modell der Livländischen Ordensburg. Das Modell der Livländischen Ordensburg wurde 2010 vom Stadtbürger von Kandava

und seinen Freunden ausgefertigt und steht im Square neben dem Ritterburgberg. Es gibt keine vollständigen Informationen über das anfängliche Aussehen der Burg. Das Modell wurde auf Grund der durchgeführten Ruinenmessungen und der vorhandenen annähernden Beschreibungen des Livländischen Ordensburg Kandava ausgefertigt.

11 Die Keramik – Brennerei in Kandava (Dzeņu Straße 2, Tel. +371 26369421, www.linda.viss.lv) Die junge Keramikerin Linda Romanovska wird Sie in Kandava mit einem der ältesten Handwerke bekanntmachen sowie Ihnen erzählen un zeigen, wie aus einem kleinen Lehmklumpen herausragende Kunstwerke enstehen.

12 Freilichtbühne Ozolāji. Die Freilichtbühne befindet sich zwischen den Hügeln Riebiķi und Skolas. Die Bühne ist von Eichen umgeben. Im Sommer finden hier verschiedene Veranstaltungen statt – Konzerte, Theateraufführungen, Feste im Grünen.

13 Promenade. Die Promenade von K andava is t 2011 eingerichtet worden. Jetzt ist dort ein Erholungsort eingerichtet worden. Die Promenade ver zieren 7 Brücken, die die Brautpaare zu sich einladen. Es gibt zwei Spielplätze für Kinder mit einer Vielzahl von Schaukeln und anderen Möglichkeiten der Freizeitgestaltung.

14 Schlucht Pūzurgrava. Das ist eine schöne Schlucht mit einem Bach und Quellen im Tal. Im Frühling blühen auf Abhängen Anemonen und grünen die typischen Pflanzen (darunter auch Schutzpflanzen) des Abava-Tals.

15 Der dickste Waldbirnbaum Lettlands. In Kandava wächst der selten vorkommende Wildbirnbaum (Pyrus pyraster). Sein Umfang beträgt 2,95 Meter. Gewöhnlich wachsen Waldbirnbäume im Laubwald, im Gebüsch, am Wegrand, an Fluss- und Seeufern.

zum Symbol der Stadt geworden. Diese Skulptur wurde 2010 vom Stadtbürger Bildhauer gestaltet.

18 Gedenkstein für Stalinismus-Opfer. Das Denkmal wurde im Juni 1990 eingeweiht. Es ist den nach Sibirien deportierten Stadtbürgern von Kandava gewidmet, die vor der Deportation an dieser Stelle eingesperrt waren.

19 Teterinu-See. Ein kleiner vom Kiefernwald umgebener See, wo ab und zu ein Schwanenpaar nistet. Dank dem Bach, der aus dem See ausfließt, ist hier ein Freibad eingerichtet.

20 Feuerhaus und Pesthügel/Alter Friedhof. Nach den verheerenden Bränden (1872) wurde 1902 in Kandava ein Feuerhaus errichtet. Das Gebäude wurde in den 20er Jahren umgebaut, nachdem die Stadt Feuerwehrfahrzeuge gekauft hatte. Hinter dem Feuerhaus steht der Pesthügel, der an die verheerende Seuche von 1710 erinnert. Damals stand auf dem Hügel eine Kirche, um welche alle gestorbenen Stadtbürger beerdigt wurden. Von 600 Stadtbewohnern haben nur zwei das Unglück überlebt. Die Steinmauer wurde errichtet, um den Friedhof vor Regen und Auswaschen zu schützen und so die Verbreitung der Pest zu verbeugen.

21 Alte Schule. Aussicht auf das Urstromtal der Abava. Skatepark. Das Schulgebäude ist 1929-1936 errichtet und trägt den Namen des Sprachwissenschaftlers Kārlis Mīlenbahs, der in Kandava zur Schule ging. Dieses Architekturdenkmal ist eines der 100 Schutzobjekte des Europäischen Kulturnachlasses und hat 1996 eine Fahne des Europäischen Kulturnachlasses erhalten.

22 Altstadt. Marktplatz der Altstadt. Der historische Marktplatz befindet sich im Zentrum der Altstadtbebauung. Im Mittelalter siedelten auf dem Marktplatz Handwerker und Kaufleute an, und vom Marktplatz zweigten sich Fußgänger-, Reiter- und Pferdewagenstraβen ab. 1870 und 1881 wurde die Holzstadt in Bränden zerstört. Danach wurden nur Ziegel- und Steinhäuser gebaut.

23 Vējspārns (Windflügel). Liela Straβe ist ca. 1 km lang. Ihr steilerer Abhang wird Vējspārns (Windflügel) genannt. Im Altertum stand auf dem Abhang eine Windmühle. In dieser Straβe haben Gebäude unten um einen Stock mehr. Der Steinpflaster, Wirtschaftsgebäude, geschlossene Innenhöfe und Feldsteinmauern sorgen für eine altertümliche Stimmung. Der Windflügel ist von Malern sehr beliebt.

24 Sportzentrum der Landwirtschaftlichen Fachschule Kandava (Daigones Straβe, Tel. +371 63122502). Skulpturen der Seejungfer und Neptuns im Freibad. Im Sportzentrum (1959) verbringen Stadtbewohner und-gäste sehr gerne ihre Freizeit. Im Sommer finden hier an Wochenenden verschiedene Veranstaltungen statt. Man kann sich im Freibad oder im naheliegenden Teterinu-See kostenlos baden. Im Freibad ist ein Springturm (10m) eingerichtet. Badegäste werden von der Seejungfer und vom allmächtigen Neptun aufgepasst.

Points of Interest in Kandava1 Nature park „Abavas senleja” (tel. + 371 28396830). The ancient

valley of River Abava is one of the most expressed river valleys in Latvia. The valley is 30 to 40 metres deep and as much as 300 metres wide. The territory is distinguished by great diversity of a biological nature (more than 800 kinds of plants). Nature trails, significant protected historical and natural objects.

2 Castle mound of the knights / Livonian Order castle ruins. Powder Tower / Sculpture „Acorn Knight” ( , 2011). This is a site where once upon a time the Livonian Order castle stood. Its construction was started in 1254 and it continued for more than 50 years. The castle was the residence of the district judge. Later on, the castle belonged to the Duke of Kurzeme. The castle was inhabited up until 1750. The Powder Tower is a massive quadrangular building with 2 m thick walls, containing a secret about its time of origination and the initial use. It is known that during the era of the Duke Jacob, gunpowder was produced and stored in the tower. In the 19th century, a prison was set up in the tower. While in the second part of the 20th century, for a short time, the tower was used by people as a home. A legend has it that there is a secret passageway leading from the Powder Tower to the wine cellar of the castle.

3 Trail of shrubby cinquefoil bog. Sulphur springs. To protect the only shrubby cinquefoil growth in Latvia, in 1999, in the nature park “Ancient river valley of Abava”, a protected nature area “Shrubby cinquefoil bog” was established. Since 1924, this place has been under the state protection. The trail is set up in a bog, where the shrubby cinquefoil (Pentaphylloides fruticosa) is growing in an area of 96 ha of wilderness. This is the only place in Latvia, where this yellow-blossom plant is growing in such a large area. The trail is marked with path markers. The total length of the trail is ~ 4 km. Nearby, there is also a sulphur spring. Its medicinal qualities were discovered by Žanis Dannenbergs, when treating rheumatism. In 1903, a medical treatment institution was set up there, which was widely popular and operated up until 1940.

4 Kandava Evangelical Lutheran Church (5 Baznīcas Street, tel. +371 28277286, www.kandavasdraudze.lv) and cemetery. The current Evangelical Lutheran Church was constructed in 1736. The church interior features baroque era wood-carvings, organ built in 1864, as well as an altar piece and artefacts used in church rituals. The Lutheran Church of Kandava is an architectural monument of state importance. The Church Cemetery is situated next to the church; in the cemetery, parents and sisters of the prominent Latvian linguist Kārlis Mīlenbahs are interred there.

10 Livonian Order Castle model. The Livonian Order Castle model was made in 2010 under the supervision of the local resident

and his friends. It is set up in the square next to the castle mound of the knights. Complete information about the initial appearance of the castle cannot be found. The model was formed according to the measurements of the ruins and by use of approximate data about the Livonian Order Castle.

11 Ceramic kiln in Kandava (2 Dzeņu Street, tel. +371 26369421, www.linda.viss.lv). The young potter Linda Romanovska in Kandava will introduce the visitors with one of the most ancient handicrafts skills, as will tell and show how to create an excellent work of art from a small piece of clay.

12 Ozolāji open-air stage. The stage is located at the intersection of Riebiķi and Skolas hills. Ozolāji (lit. transl. from Latvian “an oak-tree grove”) is enclosed by an old oak-tree wood. In summer time, audiences can enjoy various events – concerts, plays, and open-air dancing.

13 Promenade. The Kandava Promenade was created in 2011. It is a recreation site. There are seven bridges inviting the newlyweds. There are t wo children`s playgrounds with various swing sets and other leisure activity possibilities in the territory.

14 Ravine “Pūzurgrava”. It is a beautiful ravine with a creek and springs in its valley. In the spring time, anemones are blooming and plants that are typical for the Abava river valley, including protected plant species, start their annual course there.

15 The thickest wild pear-tree in Latvia. Kandava is the place where the wild pear-tree (Pyrus pyraster), which is a rarely found tree in Latvia, is growing and it has reached circumference of 2.95 m. Normally, it grows in deciduous woods, bushes, roadsides, and on the banks of rivers and lakes.

NATURE OBJECTS25 Castle Mound of Buse / Matkule (rural municipality of Matkule). It is

a five-level castle mound, from where beautiful scenery opens up to the valley of River Imula. The castle mound of Buse is included on the list of 50 most popular natural her itage monuments of state impor tance. Owing to its natural magnificence, it has been awarded with two flags of the European Heritage of Cultural History.

26 Nature trail along the River Imula (rural municipality of Matkule). The trail starts at the place where Imula flows into River Abava, from the tent grounds “Vītiņi”. The trail sections are of differing level of difficulty.

27 Nature trail Ozolaji of Vicarage – length – 900 m. Starts behind the building of the vicarage and leads along the steep slope of the old Abava valley as far as the biologically significant meadows in Old Ozolaji – a unique place on the banks of the river. The former open air stage – an old place for relaxation and walks.

28 Devil’s Cave and Devil’s Stone (rural municipality of Kandava). The Devil’s Cave is ~8.5 m deep. In the highest place, the cave is 1.5 m high and 1.2 m wide. In the ravine, outcrops of grey sandstone and dolomite can be seen. The legend tells that once upon a time, the Devil wanted to block Abava. But he could not manage to accomplish this mission because of a cock-crow. As the Devil was hurrying away, he dropped the stone right there in the meadow, at the top of the hill, where it is still today.

29 Aizupe Manor Park (rural municipality of Vāne). Around the manor (built in 1823), there is a park covering 14 ha. All types of thuya that are found in Europe are growing in the park.

30 Smiltiņkalns Hill (rural municipality of Zante). The hill Smiltiņkalns or Ķīkerkalns is the highest elevation in the Eastern Courland elevated plains – 155.3 metres above the sea level. Its relative altitude is 50 metres. Extensive sand and gravel deposits were found in the hill, and the hill was dug off. A small hill is kept from the hill’s elevation, where a viewpoint is set up for the travellers.

32 Rūmene Manor and park* (Rūmene, rural municipality of Kandava, tel. +371 67770966, 26688000, www.rumenesmuiza.lv). Rūmene Manor is the countryside residence for the five-star hotel of Riga “Hotel Bergs”, intended for relaxation and events, providing also accommodation. Rūmene, its lands and manor, has a very old history dating back more

600 Jahre lange Geschichte. Das im Neugotik-Stil erbaute Herrenhaus stammt aus dem Jahr 1876 und wird von einer 7,8 ha großen Parkanlage umgeben. Im Landschaftspark wachsen 364 seltene Baumsorten.

33 Landgut Valdeki* (Valdeki, Gemeinde Kandava, Tel. +371 26452948). Das Schloss-Gebäude des Landguts Valdeki wurde 1882 erbaut. 1931 geriet das in einem sehr schlechten Zustand verweilende Herrenhaus in den Besitz des lettischen Pressemagnaten – Verlegers, Journalisten, Schriftstellers Antons Benjamins (1860-1939), der Ende 30er Jahre im Gut eine Musterwirtschaft bildete. 1998 wurde im Schloss das Museum zum Andenken des ersten lettischen Farbfotografen, Chemikers, Eigentümers der Filmfabrik Kanada Juris Benjamins eröffnet.

34 Landgut Vane* (Grundschule Vane, Vane, Gemeinde Vane, Tel. +371 63155142). Im 16. Jh. verbrachte da seine letzten Tage der Chronist von Livland, Sekretär und Vertrauensmann des Herzogs von Kurland Gotthard Kettler Salomon Henning (1528-1589). Leider wurde das in den 70er Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts erbaute Schloss während der Revolution 1905 niedergebrannt und erst 1936-1940 zum Zweck der Einrichtung einer Schule wiederaufgebaut.

35 Landgut Zante mit dem Park* (Grundschule Zante, Gemeinde Zante, Tel. +371 63155309, 29339408). Das klassizistische Schloss ist in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jh. erbaut. 1925 wurde im Schloss eine Schule eingerichtet. 1953-1963 war im Schloss-Gebäude die Oberschule, später – die Grundschule Zante untergebracht. Erhalten haben sich von der ursprünglichen Gutsbebauung das Wohnhaus der Knechte, der Getreideboden (19. Jh.) und das Gebäude der Molkerei.

36 Landgut Zemite mit dem Park* (Grundschule Zemite, Gemeinde Zemite, Tel. +371 63155356, 26527265). Das jetzige Schloss ist um 1850 erbaut, um diese Zeit sei auch der Park angelegt. Der Schloss-Turm wurde Ende 19. Jh. errichtet. In den Jahren 1905 und 1931 stand das Schloss in Brand, danach wurde es aber wiederaufgebaut. Heute ist im Schloss die Grundschule Zemite untergebracht. Im Park sind das Gesicht des Parkwächters auf dem Lindenstamm und der Stuhl der Verliebten zu besichtigen.

KIRCHEN37 Evangelisch-lutherische Kirche von Vane* („Krastmalas“, Vane,

Gemeinde Vane, Tel. +371 26358060). Evangelisch-lutherische Kirche von Vane ist in der Zeit von 1654 bis 1663 errichtet und 1789 umgebaut. Die Kirche ist durch ihre prachtvollen barocken Wandmalereien aus dem 17. Jh. bekannt, die wegen der Renovierungsarbeiten eine lange Zeit verborgen waren. In der lettischen Kunstgeschichte sind diese Meisterwerke einzigartig, weil sie sich ziemlich gut erhalten haben und auf einer ausreichend großen Fläche zu sehen sind.

38 Evangelisch-lutherische Kirche von Zemite* („Eglites“, Gemeinde Zemite, Tel. +371 29154017). Die Kirche von Zemite ist schon 1567 als evangelisch-lutherische Niederlassung der Kirche von Kandava urkundlich erwähnt. Die Orgel der Kirche wurde 1848 eingebaut. 1852 wurde die Generalreparatur der Kirche durchgeführt. 1963 wurde die Kirche aber geschlossen. Die Altarholzschnitzereien, das Altargemälde, die Kanzel, der Kronleuchter und die Ritualgegenstände wurden vom Museum des Schlosses Rundale übernommen. 1993 nahm die Kirche ihre Tätigkeit wieder auf.

MUSEUMS39 Kurzeme Fortress Museum in Zante (8a Skolas Street, Zante, tel.

+371 29442311, www.kurzemescietoksnis.viss.lv). The museum exposition helps obtaining an idea of the progress of the World War II in the Kurzeme Fortress and about the fates of the soldiers. At the museum, the guests can see also a historical exhibition of the World War I and II including a collection of items of local history and military nature, an exposition “Latvian army 1918–1945”, AN-2 airplane and a Red Army tank. Restored entrenchments and bunkers of those times are open for the visitors to explore.

GARDENS40 Iris and Gladiola Gardens* („Intes”, rural municipality of Kandava,

tel. +371 26068154, www.irisgarden.lv, www.gladiolus.lv). The Iris Garden in the area of Kandava belongs to the gladiola and iris breeder Laimonis Zaķis, who has been breeding for more than 30 years. The bulbous plant species already exceed several hundreds. Currently, he is the biggest Dwarf Bearded Iris collection owner. During florescence, there are open door days in the garden.

There is also an extensive collection of ancient tools – horse-pulled gadgets, fire-fighting tools, and others. Activities for wedding guests, bird-watching. This is the site of shooting the movie “Little Robbers”.

NATUROBJEKTE25 Burgberg von Buse / Matkule (Gemeinde Matkule). Ein fünfstufiger

Burgberg mit einer Aussicht auf die malerische Landschaft des Tals des Flusses Imula. Der Burgberg von Buse ist eines von 50 populärsten nationalen Naturdenkmälern Lettlands. Für die Prächtigkeit der Natur ist der Burgberg Buse mit zwei Fahnen des europäischen kulturhistorischen Erbes ausgezeichnet.

26 Naturpfad entlang dem Fluss Imula (Gemeinde Matkule). Der Fuβweg beginnt an der Mündung der Imula in den Fluss Abava, in der Nähe des Lagerplatzes „Vitini”. Die Abschnitte des Pfads haben unterschiedliche Schwierigkeitsgrade.

27 Naturpfad Ozolaji des Pfarrhauses –die Länge - 900 m. Beginnt hinter dem Pfarrhaus und führt den steilen Abhang des Abava Tales entlang bis zu biologisch bedeutenden Wiesen in Vecie Ozolaji - ein besonderer Ort in einer Flussbiegung. Die ehemalige Freilichtsbühne- ein beliebter Platz zum Ausruhen und Wanderungen.

28 Teufelshöhle (Velna ala) und Teufelsstein (Velnakmens) (Gemeinde Kandava). Die Teufelshöhle ist ~8,5 m tief. Ihre höchste Stelle beträgt 1,5 m; die Breite - 1,2 m. In der Schlucht sind Zutagestreichen des grauen Sandsteins und des Dolomits zu sehen. Eine Sage erzählt, dass der Teufel einmal den Fluss Abava versperren wollte. Er wurde aber durch den Schrei des Hahns unterbrochen. Der Teufel lief davon in die Unterwelt und warf den Stein hin in die Hügelwiese, wo er noch heute liegt.

29 Park des Landguts von Aizupe (Gemeinde Vane). Die Fläche des Parks des Landguts (1823) beträgt 14 Hektar. Im Park wachsen sämtliche europäische Thujen-Sorten.

30 Hügel Smiltinkalns (Gemeinde Zante). Smiltinkalns oder Kikerkalns ist der höchste Hügel der Höhe von Austrumkursa - 155,3 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel. Seine relative Höhe beträgt 50 Meter. Hier wurden einst Sand- und Kiesvorkommen gefunden, und der Hügel wurde abgetragen. Auf dem Rest des Hügels ist ein Aussichtspunkt für Touristen eingerichtet.

Das Schloss Kalnmuiža wurde Anfang 19. Jh. erbaut und zur Zeit haust hier ein Hotel.

32 Landgut Rumene mit dem Park* (Rumene, Gemeinde Kandava,

than 600 years. The master building of Rūmene Manor was constructed in 1876 in neo-Gothic style. The scenic park of Rūmene Manor with its 364 rare tree garden covers an area of 7.8 ha.

33 Valdeķi Manor* (Valdeķi, rural municipality of Kandava, tel. +371 26452948). The palace building of Valdeķi Manor was constructed in 1882. In 1931, in a rather deteriorated stated it was bought by the publisher, journalist, and writer Antons Benjamiņš (1860–1939), who in late 30-ties turned Valdeķi Manor into a rural model farm. In 1998, a memorial museum was opened for Juris Benjamiņš – the first colour-photography master, chemist, and movie factory owner in Canada.

34 Vāne Manor* (Elementary School of Vāne, in Vāne, rural municipality of Vāne, tel. +371 63155142). In the 16th century, Vāne Manor was the place, where his final days were spent by the Livonian chronicle writer, the secretary of Gotthard Kettler, the Duke of Kurzeme, and his confidant – Solomon Henning (1528–1589). Vāne Manor building was constructed in the 70-ties of the 19th century. During the 1905 revolution, the building was burnt down. It was reconstructed again only in 1936–1940 for setting up a school.

35 Zante Manor and park* (Elementary School of Zante, rural municipality of Zante, tel. +371 63155309, 29339408). Zante Manor building was constructed in the first half of the 19th century in classicism style. In 1925, a school was installed in the Zante Manor. From 1953–1963, the building hosted the Secondary School of Zante, later – the Elementary School of Zante. From the auxiliary manor buildings, only the servants’ dwelling house and the granary (19th cent.) and dairy building have been preserved.

36 Zemīte Manor and park* (Elementary School of Zemīte, rural municipality of Zemīte, tel. +371 63155356, 26527265). The current Zemīte Palace or the master house was constructed around 1850, when the park around it was also arranged. The tower was added to the palace at the end of the 19th century. The palace suffered in fires in 1905 and 1931 and then reconstructed. Now, the Elementary School of Zemīte has settled in the manor. A carved face of the Groundskeeper in a linden tree trunk, and the Lovers’ Seat can be seen at the park.

CHURCHES37 Lutheran Church of Vāne* (“Krastmalas”, Vāne, rural municipality of

Vāne, tel. +371 26358060). The Lutheran Church of Vāne was constructed during the time frame from 1654 to 1663. It was reconstructed in 1789. It is renowned in Latvia with its splendid baroque wall paintings of the 17th century, which were hidden for a long time, because repairs were being conducted at the church. They are unique for the Latvian art history, because they are rather well preserved and covering a considerably large area.

38 Lutheran Church of Zemīte* (“Eglītes”, rural municipality of Zemīte, tel. +371 29154017). The church of Zemīte was first mentioned in writings in the year 1567 as a branch of the Kandava Evangelical Lutheran Church. The organs in the church were built in 1848. Major repairs in the church were made in 1852. The church was closed in 1963. The altar wood-carvings, the altarpiece, pulpit, chandelier, as well as ritual items were

32 MUSEEN39 Museum der kurländischen Festung in Zante (Skolas Straβe 8a, Zante,

Die Ausstellung erzählt anschaulich über den Verlauf des Zweiten Weltkriegs in der kurländischen Festung und über Schicksale der lettischen Soldaten nach dem Krieg. Zu besichtigen sind die Ausstellung heimatkundlicher und militärischer Gegenstände über die Geschichte beider Weltkriege, die Ausstellung Lettische Armee 1918-1945, ein Flugzeug AN-2, und ein Panzer der Roten Armee. Restauriert sind die alten Schutzgräben und Bunker.

GARTEN40 Schwertliliengarten und Gladiolengarten von Laimonis Zaķis*

(„Intes”, Gemeinde Kandava, Tel. +37126068154, www.irisgarden.lv, www.gladiolus.lv). Der Schwertliliengarten in der Nähe von Kandava gehört dem Selektionär von Gladiolen und Schwertlilien Laimonis Zaķis, der mehr als 30 Jahre selektioniert und hat mehrere Hunderte Zwiebelblumensorten geschaffen. Seine Zwergschwertlilien ist zurzeit die größte in Lettland. Wenn die Blumen blühen, ist der Garten für Besucher offen.

www.indani.viss.lv). Biologischer Bauernhof, an dem man Haustiere und Geflügel besichtigen und liebkosen kann. Zu besichtigen ist eine groβe Sammlung alter Werkzeuge - Pferdezeug, Feuerwehrgeräte u. a. Hochzeitsvergnügungen, Vogelbeobachtung. Drehort des Films „Die kleinen Räuber”.
