Well, that’s exactly what happened over three nights at Fourways High School when this so- called fantasy became a reality. The show demands handfuls of their personal time (and dignity) and brings with it loads of pressure. And this instalment didn’t disappoint as the show elicited belly laughs and hilarious memories for both the staff and students. One of the best moments was their take on The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s quirky Time Warp. When the entire male staff performed Swan Lake wearing tutus and leotards, everyone’s stomachs were aching and the audience was in stitches as the actors tried not to corpse and laugh at themselves. Despite the humorous theme of the show, it isn’t just about the laughs. “It’s not only about entertaining the students but about benefiting the staff,” said Mark Guthrie, teacher and head of culture – who has performed in the Fourways Follies four times. It’s helped the staff improve their relationships with one another and get to know each other better. Afrikaans teacher Mrs. Heleen Opperman said, “When I was told we were going to do the Follies this year, I was honestly nervous thinking about having to perform, yet as rehearsals began and we actually started practicing, the staff and I ended up having a lot of fun and looking forward to the students seeing us on stage. It helps you to get out of your comfort zone and make many good memories and is a great bonding experience for the staff.” Although Follies brings potential anxiety for the staff, teachers who have been in the show before reassure us that it is all worth it. Vice Principal Mr. Andrew Holliday, who has also performed in the show four times added, “I look forward to the Follies’ show because of the great fun it brings to the entire school. Although it does put a lot of pressure on the staff and re- quires them to sacrifice a large amount of their time. Despite that, the Follies allows us to do good things together. I’ve seen that it also improves relationships between students and teachers,” said Mr. Holliday. In the afterglow of the show, the students get to realise that their teachers are real people too. Seeing them in a completely different light helps us recognize their humanity and just how far they are prepared to go to help students strive to reach their full potential—even if this means put- ting on a school uniform to show the students what they are really like. The majority of the staff will admit that it has been a blast, especially performing a skit that they admire. “I always enjoy doing Rocky Horror, it’s always great,” Mr. Holliday said. Fourways High School

4WAYS FOLLIES

Have you ever imagined seeing your strict, no-nonsense teacher getting up on your school stage and performing as a transvestite? Or how’s about every single teacher in your school danc-ing to Uptown Funk? Well, that’s exactly what happened over three nights at Fourways High School when this so- called fantasy became a reality. Known as the Fourways Follies, this wacky and interactive show takes teachers out of their classrooms and onto the stage to perform and do things they (and we) would never imagine them doing.

“It’s helped the staff improve their relationships with one another and get to know each other better. It really helps with team building and also shows the students our humane side.”

The show was split into various parodies which either shows staff members dancing, singing, acting or performing orchestrated slapstick pieces, making the atmosphere electric and a deluxe dose of fun.

“It helps you to get out of your comfort zone and make many good memories and is a great bonding experience for the staff.”

Although Follies brings potential anxiety for the staff, teachers who have been in the show before reassure us that it is all worth it.

Vice Principal Mr. Andrew Holliday, who has also performed in the show four times added, “I look forward to the Follies’ show because of the great fun it brings to the entire school. Although it does put a lot of pressure on the staff and re-quires them to sacrifice a large amount of their time.

“Despite that, the Follies allows us to do good things together. I’ve seen that it also improves relationships between students and teachers,” said Mr. Holliday.

In the afterglow of the show , the students get to realise that their teachers are real people too. Seeing them in a completely different light helps us recognize their humanity and just how far they are prepared to go to help students strive to reach their full potential—even if this means put-ting on a school uniform to show the students what they are really like.

The majority of the staff w ill admit that it has been a blast, especially performing a skit that they admire. “I always enjoy doing Rocky Horror, it’s always great,” Mr. Holliday said.

VOLLEYBALL TOUR TO MAHIKENG

The annual tour to Mahikeng for the International School of South Africa’s International Volleyball tournament took place from the 3rd-5th August this year. With only three weeks to prepare the teams were excited and nervous; ready to compete with a fighting spirit. A four hour drive saw the girls and staff arrive in Mahikeng to the start of a hectic tournament. It was a tournament of firsts and lasts for our girls as we took two u16 teams for the first time and many u19 matrics played their last high school game of volleyball. The tournament was two days of grueling matches in the heat of the North-West Province, against some of the top teams from South Africa and Zimbabwe. Our u19A team met their toughest competition in the quarter final match, which led to them winning the plate section of the tournament. The u19B team made an incredible come back against their competition, finally placing 4th in the cup section of the tournament. The two u16 teams had a fantastic experience and learnt what level is to be expected as they move up through the ranks. This tournament was also a wonderful opportunity for the girls to make new friends from other schools and share their knowledge with younger team mates. Special mentions go to Limpopo Molife and Samantha Kemp who won the tournament awards of Best Attacker and Best Defender respectively. They have inspired the girls to work hard to fill the shoes of those who leave us behind with passion and dedication. Huge thanks need to go to Sasol Witkoppen for sponsoring the wonderful warmup shirts for all those on tour. We look forward to the rest of the 2018 season and wish the matrics well with their prelims and finals. The first half of the 2018 Volleyball season saw huge successes with many players. Four of our u19 players, namely Limpopo Molife, Sarah Shabalala, Shaylee Krumples and Andrea Popara were selected and went on to play for Gauteng in the u19 IPT in July. The team did exceptionally well, losing only one set to Limpopo Province over the entire tournament, thus placing second overall. Sarah Shabalala impressed all as she won best setter of the IPT. Many of our other players were selected to the u17 Gauteng side, however, their section of the tournament was cancelled by the organisers. Our congratulations still extend to these girls in recognition of their excellence and dedication. Limpopo Molife and Sarah Shabalala then went on to represent the school as they played for South Africa in the u20 BRICS tournament that was hosted at WITS this year, two weeks after IPT. The girls made us proud as they excelled in their new team and played against China and India.

We are very proud to be able to say that Fourways Volleyball has been a part of molding two national players and many provincial players. Our season is by no means over, with three more tournaments looming on the horizon. We wish our girls many hours of fun and great results as we head to the JVU, TUKS and AISJ tournaments in September. U19 IPT Players: Limpopo Molife; Andrea Popara; Lenah Fatah (Assistant coach); Sarah Shabalala; Shaylee Krumples Sarah Shabalala IPT U19 Best Setter Tour to Mahikeng

Brooklyn Miles who has qualified to receive Central Gauteng Tumbling Colours and to represent Central Gauteng at the Tumbling SA Gym Games. The games take place on Sunday 30 September and Monday 1 October 2018.

Our congratulations on this fantastic achievement.
