It’s all about the experience. The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s (KCBIA) ongoing Festival of Experiences is all about showcasing everything Downtown Kamloops has to offer, every day of the year, and promoting what a wonderful down-town the city has.
This summer, it’s focusing on public-space programming and encouraging downtown businesses to come outside by doing live demonstrations, hosting classes and bringing any number of interactive activities to the streets of the downtown core.
Enjoy pop-up pic-nics every Friday at the TNRD Library Plaza, where there is live music and giant checkers.
Live at Lunch brings local musicians to per-form Tuesday, through Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. all sum-mer.
The Kamloops Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday at Stuart Wood elementary with
local vendors offer-ing fresh fruit, veggies, baked goods, meats and homemade crafts.
“You can come downtown any day in Kamloops and have a great experience because the unique thing about downtown is there’s always fun activities hap-pening,” said KCBIA general manager Gay Pooler.
“You could see a flash mob, do some yoga in the park or just sit on a patio and watch the people go by while you enjoy the sun.”
During the summer, the streets become an entertainment venue as the KCBIA hosts various events.
The popular annual Downtown Merchants Market is upon us. The four-day sales extrava-ganza is by far the most anticipated event of the year.
Everyone has a favou-rite: Finding summer deals at all the retail outlets, sampling fine cuisine from all the best downtown eateries, tak-ing in the Community
Carnival, eating lunch on a patio while listening to live local talent or get-ting fresh local produce and finding unique crafts from local artisans at the extended Farmers’ Market.
It’s all happening July 23 to July 26 right in the best place in the city — the downtown core.
This four-day festival and sales extravaganza houses some of the city’s best events, which include the Taste of the Downtown and two first time events — a Car-Free Day and Street Battle of the Bands.
The festival draws res-idents and tourists from near and far right into the centre of the city and with good reason — it is full of shopping, enter-tainment, sunshine, food and friends!
There is live music on the streets all four days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and amazing mer-chant sales and specials throughout the entire festival.
See page 4 for a full schedule of events for the Merchants Market.

All four days of the Downtown Merchants Market feature live, local music on the streets.
The Live at Lunch Music program, which usually runs Tuesdays through Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. gets a boost of adrenaline during the market and expands.
There will be a variety of musicians coming downtown to perform from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the 200-, 300- and 400-blocks of Victoria Sreet.
Most of your local favourites will be playing. Check the full music schedule at www.downtownkamloops.com
Wednesday, July 23Car-Free Day
The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association (KCBIA) is excited about the first-ever Car-Free Day in Kamloops.
This will be the first time three blocks of Victoria Street will be
blocked off to traffic all at once. The 200-, 300- and 400-blocks of Victoria Street will be a pedestrian-only prom-enade Wednesday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The streets will be filled with Kamloops Farmers’ Market vendors, the United Way Community Carnival and many other community groups, live music, entertainment, artists, arti-sans, merchants and activities.
Thursday, July 24 Downtown Echo’s Taste of the Downtown
Back by overwhelming popular demand is the tasting tour of local restaurants, taking place on Thursday, July 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Each participating restaurant goes above and beyond to bring you a din-ing experience like you have never had before.
There are two different serving times: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Restaurant passports are only $10, with proceeds going to the Kamloops Food Bank and Live at Lunch Music program.
You will not be disappointed and
you will not go away hungry. Kudos to anyone who can successfully visit and sample the food at each restaurant.
Also, don’t forget to vote for your favourite restaurant to win the fifth Annual Golden Fork and Silver Spoon Award, given yearly to the restaurant with the most votes and highest per-centage of votes.
Last year the Golden Fork was awarded to Indian Aroma and the Silver Spoon was awarded to Maurya’s Fine Indian Cuisine. Who will win the titles this year?
Friday, July 25Street Battle of the Bands
Another first-time Merchants Market event is the Downtown Kamloops Street Battle of the Bands on Friday, July 25.
This event is open to any band to enter — local, amateur and willing! They will be performing all day long from noon to 7 p.m. at the New Gold Main Stage on Fourth Avenue between Lansdowne and Victoria Streets.
The entire block will be closed to traffic as a pedestrian promenade.
There will be a main stage, seating,
games, misting station and food ser-vice street-side by the Central Station Pub.
You will be able to come down, listen to live music, eat and spend the day enjoying yourself. BCLC band prizes are $750 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place.
Saturday, July 26Saturday Sidewalk Spectacular
This day is all about merchant side-walk sales, specials and deals! This is the final day of the four-day sidewalk sale and prices will be slashed at all of the outlets. There is also plenty of live music, the Saturday Farmers Market and Artisans Square at St. Andrews on the Square.

Kamloops’ first and only studio focused on body piercing has a revamped space.
Instinct Adornment on Victoria Street is welcoming everyone to check out their reno-vated studio during the Downtown Merchants Market.
Instinct has been a part of the downtown community since 1999. Jenna Dittrich helped found the studio 15 years ago and, after two years away, returned to the store as the senior pierc-er and owner on April 8.
“There’s so many interesting things going on downtown and it’s amazing to be a part of
that culture and commu-nity,” she said.
Dittrich has been working hard to freshen up the space, which also included bringing in Arwen’s Apparel.
The line of B.C. made bamboo clothing is ver-satile, casual living wear and now available at Instinct Adornment.
The apparel will be available during the Merchants Market side-walk sale and samples of the bamboo fabric will be given out.
Instinct will also be presenting their “Formal Friday” during the third day of the Market and will have boutonnieres and corsages available
for anyone who dresses formally.
“The Downtown Merchants Market is fab-ulous way to get every-one downtown to see the small and independent businesses,” Dittrich said.
Everyone who pierces at Instinct Adornment has been trained through Fakir Intensives, the lon-gest-running accredited body-piercing school in the world.
The clean, comfort-able studio offers two full-treatment rooms.
They carry a full line of industrial strength implant-grade jewelry, as well as a large selection of organic jewelry and a
14-karat gold collection. All the jewelry available is North American-made.
Being part of the downtown Kamloops community for 15 years, Instinct Adornment is active in the vibrant arts community.
It has sponsored the Kamloops Burlesque Monthly Showcase since its inception and hosts the annual celebration of body art as fine art with the live show Body Beautiful: Art Defined with the Kamloops’ Arts
Council.“I like the sense of
community downtown and the ability to see such diverse things, like Music in the Park every day after work,” Dittrich said. “It’s an incredible place to work and live.”
Instinct adornment revamped in time for Downtown Merchants Market
One shirt, 60 different ways to wear it! Instinct Adornment now carries Arwen’s Apparel, B.C.-made bamboo-fabric clothing. Look for sales on the apparel during the Downtown Merchants Market.

Eyes International expands selection of sunglassesThe downtown of a city
is its shining centrepiece and Kamloops’ is so bright you’ll need shades.
That’s where Eyes International comes in. If you don’t already have a pair to get you through the Downtown Merchants Market this month, staff at Eyes International can help you find the perfect pair at the annual sidewalk sale July 23 to July 26.
Eyes International has been a part of the Downtown Merchants Market for more than a decade. In that time the downtown core has changed drastically, but what hasn’t changed is Eyes International’s place at its centre — in the heart of the city.
“We see ourselves as a key merchant in the downtown core,” said Rino Piroddi, owner and man-
ager of Eyes International. “This is a huge event for
the downtown. It lets mer-chants get out and interact with their customers.”
Six weeks ago, Eyes International completed an expansion to their sun-glasses section. They have the largest selection of sunglasses in the city, with more than 1,000 pairs, and carry all the top brands — Oakley, Ray-Ban, Spy, Dragon, Versace, Prada, Coach and more.
Polarized lenses elimi-nate glare when you’re driving or just hanging out on the beach. Whether you’re looking for a pre-scription pair, specialty work pair or just a fashion accessory, all the choices offer UVA and UVB pro-tection.
Your eyes are exposed to invisible UV rays every day, all day, through every
season and every environ-ment. UV rays penetrate through clouds by more than 90 per cent.
Depending on the frame size, shape and position of you sunglasses, UV rays can still reach the eyes, so picking a quality pair will reduce damage.
Year-round, Eyes International offers free vision examinations with a minimum purchase.
Performed by a licensed refracting optician, vision examinations are a quick, safe and accurate way to assess your vision. Eyes International also has the largest selection of brand-name prescription glasses in the city, includ-ing Oakley, Ray-ban, Spy, D&G, Versace, Hugo Boss, Coach and Guess.
They also carry many popular brands of contact lenses, including coloured
options.Piroddi and the staff at
Eyes International have always embraced the Downtown Merchants Market’s sidewalk sale. They come to work in their best summer wear and enjoy the opportunity to work with customers in a more relaxed setting.
The Market has always been the place to find great
summer deals and that trend will continue with this year’s sidewalk sale. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and can help you find a pair of prescription glasses or sun-glasses that are a perfect fit for you. Not only does the sidewalk sale allow Eyes International to bring great deals to customers, it helps to showcase its continued
commitment to consum-ers in Kamloops, Chase, Clearwater, Barrier and Merritt.
Piroddi has enjoyed see-ing the downtown grow and develop from his place at 331 Victoria St. He said Kamloops and its business-es have changed drastically over the years and hopes they will continue to grow and prosper.
Eyes International recently expanded their section of sunglasses. They have the largest selection in the city with more than 1,000 pairs.
