Most of that tea comes from India, the world’s largest tea producer, processing about 850,000 tons each year. • Tea as we know it is about 5,000 years old. Legend has it that a Chinese emperor discovered a good cup of tea in 2737 B.C. when some tea leaves off the tree into his pot of boiling water, producing a pleasant aroma. Tea became popular in Europe during the 1600s and was brought to North America by the colonists. Britain’s Duchess of Bedford is said to have created the traditional afternoon tea around 1840, when she needed a pick-me-up to combat what she called “that sinking feeling.” • When the British government heavily taxed the tea shipped to the American colonies, in 1773, a group of 116 men dressed as Native Americans boarded British ships and tossed 342 chests of tea overboard, about 90,000 lbs. (40,823 kg) worth. In today’s currency, that was equal to nearly a million dollars! Turn the page for more!

•While a cup of tea does contain caffeine,it doesn’t compare to the amount found in coffee. A cup of tea has about 40 mg. of caffeine compared to coffee’s 110 mg per cup. The lesser-processed green tea has even lesscaffeine than black leaves. But if you want a higher caffeine level in your tea, sip yerba maté, which has about the same amount as coffee. Auto BitsHit the open road with confidence(NC)—The arrival of warm weather brings about the excitement and possibility of vacations, long weekends and road trips. Every year a number of Canadians decide to forgo the stress of air travel in favour of exploring their country by taking to the open road.

To make your trip as comfortable, functional and safe as possible, it’s best to plan ahead, get organized and make sure you have a few essentials.

First, it’s a good idea to have your car checked out by a certified technician, who will identify, perform maintenance and repair any issues your car may have. This step helps you avoid expensive or inconvenient repairs during your vacation.

Once the car is road-ready, it’s time to get organized. For families this can be a monumental task, so leading retailer, Canadian Tire, says it has several storage solutions. Many are designed to tame car clutter and create extra room for road trip essentials like games, toys, snacks and drinks. Outside of the car, consider using a roof rack to safely store your camping gear and a sport rack so that you can bring along your gear.

Keeping the kids entertained – and to minimize the collective “are we there yet”—don’t forget the portable DVD players and a few of their favourite toys. And to keep the children clean and safe make sure you have properly installed car seats for the little ones as well as a good stock of wipes.

To avoid any lost time consider investing in a GPS unit to navigate your way to your destination. You can find custom GPS units specially made for RVs.

Always keep an emergency road kit in your car to help you stay safe during your road trip. It’s also a good idea to keep some tools in the trunk in case you get a flat tire. Ifyou’re changing the tire yourself, you’ll need tools such as sockets, wrenches and jacks to help you get the job done. For convenience, Canadian Tire tells us you can purchase complete emergency kits at your local store that also includes one free year of roadside assistance.

Get your road trip off to a safe start by taking the time to prepare your car. A little preparation ensures that you can travel worry-free and focus on fun.

IT’S TEE TIME!Fore! Look out as Tidbits presents a few facts about the tools necessary for a good golf game.• The ancient Romans played a game similar to

golf as we know it, but the modern game of golf was developed in Scotland in the 1400s. The first written record is that of a ban of the sport by King James II in 1457, calling golf a distraction to learning archery, which was necessary for national defense.

• The official rules of golf state that a golfer’s bag may contain 14 clubs. A typical player will carry a driver, two woods, seven irons, three wedges, and a putter. The putter has earned the nickname “the money club” because it is the one used to tap the ball into the hole. The first clubs were made entirely of wood, followed by wood shafts with iron heads. In the 1920s, steel-shafted clubs came into play. Shafts made of fiber-reinforced composite materials were introduced in the early 1970s.

• The earliest golf balls were probably made of wood. Golf balls in the early 1800s consisted of thin leather pieces stuffed with feathers. Those that were very tightly packed flew the farthest. More than 5,000 patents have been granted for various forms of golf balls since 1900. Those little indentations on the ball are called dimples and were first used about 100 years ago. Players discovered that damaged balls flew farther than new ones, so companies began manufacturing balls in different shapes trying to increase the distances. One ingenious fellow studied the ball’s path, and came up with the current dimpled idea. Today’s regulation

golf ball has 336 dimples.

• An official golf ball should not weigh more than 1.62 oz., and must be at least 1.68 inches in diameter.

• There are about 32,000 golf courses worldwide, with close to 20,000 of those in the United States. The country of Singapore has one course every 10 square miles, giving it the record for the highest per population density. England has one course every 27 square miles, and Scotland every 56. Yet some of the most populated areas of the world have no golf at all, for example, the Ukraine, whose population exceeds 47 million with nary a course in sight!

• During a 1971 tournament in England, a 26-year-old golf pro named John Hudson achieved two consecutive holes-in-one at the 11th and 12th holes. Don’t expect to tie his record – the chances of repeating this are one in 67 million.

• If you’d like to golf on the world’s longest course, you’ll have to travel to Australia. Some of the tees are 50 miles (80.5 km) apart on the 850-mile-long (1368 km) Nullarbor Links course that spans two Australian states. Don’t be surprised if you encounter the occasional wild camel or wombat. Be sure to notch out enough time for your game – somewhere between three and four days! The cost seems reasonable,howeverat$46.

Adoptables I’m used to having a hyper-aggressive image at the table. One of the things it lets me

do is get a lot of value when I make a medium-strength hand. The opponent in this hand, “The Villain,” and I have played lots of hands together,

often putting in three- and four-bets preflop against each other. We have also played lotsof pots in which I’ve bet on all streets postflop (known as “three-barreling”).

One of the reasons this happens so frequently is that I know he likes to enter potslightly. That lets me bet weaker hands for value, because it’s less likely I’m beaten, andalso lets me bluff more often, because it’s more likely he has a marginal hand.

With blinds at 75-150, action folded to The Villain in the hijack seat, and he openedto 300 with a stack of about 10,000. I called on the buttonwith K♥ 10♣ and a stack of about 26,500. Both blinds fold-ed.

The flop came 10♥ 7♥ 9♣. The Villain checked. I checked.I decided to check back this flop for a few reasons. It’s a

flop that allows for a lot of flush draw/straight draw andpair/straight draw combinations, and if he check-raised,there would be very few good turn cards for my hand. I alsowanted to disguise my hand to get more value from weakerone-pair hands. It would be much tougher for him to callwith a lower pair if the pot gets big and a scary card comes.

Having the K♥ gave me the flexibility to check back, knowing that I’d have more equity and playability on theturn if a heart fell.

The turn was the 9♠. The Villain checked. I bet 600.I was pretty confident my hand was best once

The Villain had checked twice. He might try tocheck-raise the turn with a strong hand, but Ithought it more likely he had a hand that hadsome showdown value but was too weak to bet.

The Villain called. The river was the 5♥. TheVillain checked. I bet 3,150.

Once my opponent called on the turn, I wasconfident he didn’t have three 9s. If he had taken a tricky line up to thatpoint, he would probably raise the turn to make the pot bigger and tryto get me to bluff-catch (i.e., call with a hand that beats my opponent’sbluffs, but not his hands played for value). It seemed very unlikely Iwas beaten unless he had a rare boat with pocket fives.

On the other hand, my bet of about one and a half times the potlooked like a “polarizing” bet, one that is made with the very best handsor as a bluff.

The Villain called, showing 6♦ 7♦.One of the reasons why I was able to get such a big value bet out of

my hand is that when I checked the flop, The Villain couldn’t put meon a lot of the very strong hands that I could confidently bet big. Hewould expect me to bet most of my flush draws, sets and two pair onthe flop. By choosing a bet size associated only with very strong hands when in fact itappeared unlikely that I had a very strong hand, I was able to get my opponent to makea light call.

Because I had shown a willingness to put lots of chips in lightly against my opponentpreviously, I was able to take a tricky line and get an unusual amount of value out of amedium-strength hand.

Durham, 292531, neutered Buff 3 year old domestic medium hair cross, male. Durham is one of the infamous ‘arm chair’ cats and really is quite the catch. Incredibly shy when he first came to the shelter, he would hide his head every time we tried to talk to him, but as soon as we picked him up, he would start to purr and sometimes even drool. It took about a month for him to really relax with us, but since then he has really warmed up and allowed his sweet goofy personality to shine. Durham tends to sleep high on a shelf, or on top of our scratching post and much to our amusement will often forget he’s not on the ground and ends up rolling off mid stretch. :) If you pick him up, you will find that he loves belly rubs, doesn’t mind being cradled like a baby, and when you put him down again he will follow you around seeking even more pettings. Coming from a family of at least 23 cats, he loves the company of his feline companions and is really well bonded to Palliser. He is also very relaxed around dogs. Because he does take longer than your usual cat to settle, and tends to startle at loud noises and quick movements, we do not recommend him to a home with small children.

Palliser, 292110, is an approximately 3 year old neutered male with blue/grey medium length hair and is one of the infamous “Arm chair” rescue cats. For those who haven’t heard the story, the “Arm Chair” cats were a group of twenty two cats that were dumped on the side of a rural road along with an arm chair. When he first came to the shelter, he was terrified of everything and had terrible ear infections that permanently damaged the ability of his right ear to stand erect. Although we have since managed to clear up the infections, he could now be prone to having ear infections for the rest of his life. Since spending some time in foster

with a staff member and then moving to a communal cat play room here at the shelter he has become quite a lovely cat who drools and purrs when he gets his cheeks scratched. Some days he won’t come to you for affection, but you can tell by the way that he sits up straight when you enter the room, and the way he leans into your hand as you scratch him, that he adores the attention you are giving him. After this initial visit, don’t be surprised to have him follow you around.

Probably not suited to a home with young children, as he is easily startled by loud noises and quick movements, he will need a patient guardian who is willing to spend the time to ease him into his new home. Coming from an environment with at least 22 other cats, Palliser enjoys the company of feline friends and is very well bonded with Durham, another cat from the same litter. This entire litter is also quite relaxed around the dogs they have been exposed to while being in our care we believe he’d be just fine in a home with a dog.

Q: I’ve begun to notice that our 10-year-old Shih Tzu’s leg quivers when she lifts it to go to the bathroom. Is this a warning that something is wrong?

A: “Your observation is astute,” cheers Dr. Kate Knutson, AAHA President. “Anytime, there is a change in your pet’s behavior, contacting your veterinarian is the right thing to do. In this case, the leg quivering could be an indication of pain.”Since your dog isn’t likely to replicate this particular behavior at the veterinary clinic, try to capture it on video, suggests Knutson, of Bloomington, MN If indeed your dog is in pain, the next step, of course, is to determine why, which can only be done with a thorough examination.
