technical programs - Day 1Friday, June 10 - Kahuku rooms 1 & 2

Program 1 - 8:30-11:30am: Structural Assessment of Existing Structures with Real Life Examples of Projects Involving Litigation

Presenter: Gene R. Stevens, P.E., S.E., Principal, J.R. Harris & CompanyIn litigation projects, the details are immensely important. In this seminar Mr. Stevens will draw from over 39 years of expe-rience in structural engineering and structural assessments in litigation projects. The following topics will be discussed:• OverviewofStructuralAssessments–layingthegroundworkforprojectsuccess, definitions, resources, andremedial

categories.• Investigation of Structures – what to look for, what to document, & what to test.• Evaluation&Analysis–findingandresolvingstructuralissues, analyticaltoolsandmodels.• Damages in Litigation Projects – the cost of repairs, who is at fault and the allegation of responsibility.• Repairs – what repairs are necessary and what are the options for wood and concrete structures.• Reports – Partly legal but always logical, an assessment report summarizes your work.

Program 2 - 2:00-3:30pm: Risk Management for Structural EngineersPresenter: Bennett J. Chin, Partner, McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon LLPThis seminar will cover contract law basics and key issues regarding risk management, including standard of care, defense and indemnity, limitations of liability and jobsite safety. In addition, the seminar will also touch on Copyright and Intellectual Property issues.

Bennett J. Chin: Bennett is the head of M4’s Design Professionals Defense & Counseling Group, primarily representing and counseling architects and engineers. He has represented clients in a wide range of projects including shopping centers, airports, municipal works, transportation projects, residential projects, hospital projects, commercial high-rises, restaurants and government buildings. He has given seminars on loss prevention and risk management and has lectured for numerous organizations, including AIA, ACEC, University of Hawaii School of Architecture, Lorman Education Services, California BAR/BRI and Hawaii BAR/BRI.

Program 3 - 3:45-5:15pm: A Vision for the Future of Structural Engineering & Structural Engineers: A Case for Change

Presenter: John Hooper, P.E., S.E., Senior Principal, Magnusson Klemencic AssociatesThe structural engineering profession has made vast and invaluable socio-economic contributions to humanity. Leveraging the intellectual brilliance and creativity of our profession, the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute has establishedavision—a25-yearplan—toredefineandexpandtheleadershiproleoftheStructuralEngineerinsociety.Thisplan is detailed in a document titled “A Vision for the Future of Structural Engineering and Structural Engineers: A case for change” which was published in 2013. Mr. Hooper, who is one of the original authors of this document, will explain the vision and what it takes for Structural Engineers to be leaders of change and leaders in the industry.

John Hooper: John is a Senior Principal at MKA and leader of the Laboratory Specialist Group, focused on the unique design aspects of high-tech lab, research, and vivarium facilities. His portfolio includes laboratory-driven buildings reaching 11 stories, research campuses totaling up to 900,000 ft² , and change-of-use renovations to accommodate wet labs and genetic research equipment. John has designed state-of-the-art facilities to house research for infectious diseases, veterinary medicine, and life sciences, often meeting strict Bioscience and Animal Bioscience safety levels such as BSL-2, BSL-3, and ABSL-3.Hehasdesignedseveralfacilitiesthathavebeentestedtoconfirmvibrationperformances as low as 2,000 micro-in per second. John is also MKA’s Director of

Earthquake Engineering, recognized nationally for his advanced seismic design expertise and active in code development and research.

Gene R. Stevens: For over three decades Gene has specialized in the behavior and response of structures to earthquakes, evaluation of distress in buildings and design of repairs and rehabilitations for distressed, damaged, or under-strength structures. He has reviewed projects across the United States from single family residences to high-rises and shopping malls. Using his knowledge of construction, structural design, and performance of concrete, steel, masonry, stone, and wood systems, Gene has investigated structures to determine the level of distress, cause of structural problems, and necessity for repairs, rehabilitations and upgrades.

saturday, June 11 - oahu roomProgram 4 - 8:30-10:30am: Non-Destructive Testing: Common Applications and Their Application to

Assessment of Existing StructuresPresenter: Aaron Larosche, Ph.D.

Pivot EngineersNondestructive testing (NDT) encompasses a large number of testing methods that may be applicable to the assessment of new and existing structures. When considering NDT it is important for engineers to understand the testing methods that are available, and how these methods may be used. It is also important for engineers to understand the limitations that are associated with the available techniques. This presentation will discuss NDT methods that are commonly used inassessment of existing structures. The presentation will focus particularly on techniques common to assessment ofconcrete and masonry structures, however examples of application to other structure types will be discussed. In addition to the review of available techniques, the presentation will also highlight examples of NDT’s use in past projects. Case studies will highlight particular aspects of an NDT method or combination of methods used, examples of gathered data, and the impact that NDT had on the particular project. These case studies will illustrate projects in which NDT has been used successfully as well as present potential pitfalls of NDT’s use or interpretation.

Aaron Larosche: Aaron is a structural engineering consultant in Austin, TX. His experience includes investigation of structural failures, evaluation of existing structures, structural concrete repair, and nondestructive testing of structures. Aaron received his BS in Civil Engineering from Arizona State University, and his MS and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina. He has authored technical papers and given several presentations on the subjects of his experience. He is an active member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and currently serves as the secretary of ACI committee 437 – Strength evaluation of existing structures.

Program 5 - 10:45-11:45am: Structural Construction Costs in HawaiiPresenter: Rider Levett BucknallThis seminar will focus on the costs of structural building components and labor in Hawaii. Participants will get a better understandingoftheactualcurrentconstructioncostsofbuildingcomponentstypicallydesignedandspecifiedbystructural engineers. Having an understanding of these construction costs is a great tool for making better project design decisions.

Rider Levett Bucknall is an independent, global property and construction practice withover3,600peopleinmorethan120officesworldwide.ServicesprovidedincludeCost Management, Project Management and Advisory Services.
