DAVID THORNTON The problems of landscape painting are infinite, especially when one is trying to impose the strictures of an individual way of seeing. My interest is with light, its components and the way light, colour and tone intertwine. Realism is ephemeral and dependent on culture and time, but subjective interpretation is of the individual and my primary driver. Of course, drawing and a determined attitude towards maintaining the discipline of drawing should never be forgotten. 1. MARGARET THORNTON It was exciting to discover the intricacies and reactions of the various techniques in silk painting. There are so many ways to manipulate the vibrant colours. I learn through persistence and experimentation and the results are constantly satisfying and new. Now the silk fibres are leading me in another direction and silk paper-making is adding a new dimension. Naturally being surrounded by trees in the hills I had to include some eco dyeing into the equation. Finding ways to combine these elements is both my challenge and stimulus. 2. GORDON MITCHELL is an artist, designer and sculptor. He has a successful background in the visual arts - graphic design, art education and art practice. His multi-disciplinary practice is currently focussed on the design and creation of site specific sculpture. He has exhibited at Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe and Bondi. Gordon has been commissioned by private collectors as well as corporate and public authorities. 9. SANDIE SCHRODERSandie has been living in the Perthhills for the past 14 years. Livingamongst the bush environmenthas directly impacted her art work. The threat of fire is shown throughher works by the techniques sheuses to create her pieces. Sandieburns the archival paper toproduce her images, which gives aunique scorched etched effect. She has had many close callswhen creating these pieces, withthem literally going up in smokeas the burning got out of control, reinforcing the ever present threatof fire, living amongst our volatilebushland. Please drop in to seedemonstrations on how shecreates her artwork. Sandie’s art can also be viewed

11. KARIN HOTCHKIN Artist and Art Educator who has developed anappreciation for Naive Art after many years of study/teaching and beingexposed to all aspects of Art. During this time I explored and experimentedwith this whimsical and charming form of Art and hence developed my ownNaive style. I am visually stimulated by the natural beauty that surrounds meand form a relationship with my immediate environment, the land, homes, nature, animals, plants and the landscape. My Art can also be viewed asAbstract Expressionism with a strong focus on pattern, shape, colour, designand composition, which is often executed in a playful way with a sense of joy.I make a conscious effort to not formalise my work but rather stylise it andengage my inner child.

14. GAIL DOUST KEIRLE grew up on herfamily farm near Manjimup, before spendingher adult life in suburban Perth. In 2005 shemoved to Lesmurdie, and again connected tothe Jarrah and Marri forests which now inspireher to explore their beauty in watercolours. When Gail retired from full time work in 2008,she purchased a campervan to begintravelling through and around our amazingcountry. Instead of taking photos she beganpainting instead, learning to stop and really

sink into her surroundings. (And meet fellow travellers from all over theworld.) Gail’s paintings are not botanical as such…they are interpretationsof what she sees….Her insights and influences come during the many hoursof wandering, observing and collecting. And many hours of meditating, sitting in, and being in awe of our wonderful forests, deserts and waterways.Favourite inspirations come from, honky nuts, bark, leaves, bird’s nests, lichens, mushrooms and fungi. She iscontinually learning to be in tune with howthings work as she pokes around and exploresthe details, colours, hues, shadows and the dancewithin the painting she is doing. What a way tocelebrate the wonders of our biodiversity! Whileconnecting to the flow and rhythm of seasons, shelinks into nature and place and thus re-createsher sense of belonging to our earth. Paintinghas become a large part of her life andpassion… Gail says she wants her artalways to be something that: Touches… Moves… and… InspiresGail enjoys sharing her passion with the manyvisitors to her studio and exhibitions. 6. ANITA PHILLIPS is a professional artist, predominantly painting in oils oncanvas and board. Recently she has also been exploring different mediums, including encaustic wax, charcoal and watercolours. Anita is inspired tocapture a feeling of calmness and contemplation in the depictions oflandscapes and still life that form the body of her work. Raised on a farm inthe Wheatbelt of WA, many of Anita’s works are grounded in her love of thevast skies, horizon and weather of the Australian landscape. The study ofhorizon is an ongoing theme informing her process. Her studio opens on tothe verandah of her weatherboard home, a 110-year-old example of anoriginal Kalamunda cottage. 7. HAYWARD STUDIO George Hayward studied Artand Design first at Cambridgeand later at Chelmsford in theUK. He pursued his ambition tobe a full time painter and alsoworked in ceramics on the Isleof Wight before emigrating toAustralia. Now fortunate to havehis own purpose built rammed

earth studio in Kalamunda he is able to combine his own painting time withthat of running “just paint” art classes. His preference is acrylic although healso works in oils and pastel. With an impatient and spontaneous style, acrylics allow him the freedom he requires. Nature and landscape havealways been a major influence in his work. However, he paints whatever stirshis emotions, especially those that rise from deep within. Helen Haywardloves to paint, loves the process of painting and keenly continues to exploretechniques which enable her to express feelings and emotions which arisefrom an intense connection with nature and the landscape.www.haywardstudio.com
