Kalamazoo Area Newcomers Club September 2016 Celebrating 76 Years of Service Kalamazoo, Michigan
September 15th Luncheon Our first luncheon for the season is on September 15th, 2016 at 12noon (come early to get a seat so we can start right at 12noon) and is being held at Monelli’s on S. Westnedge (just south of Sam’s Club.) Nancy Rafferty from Schoolcraft will be our speaker. She is a lifelong resident of Schoolcraft, she taught grades K-12 as a media specialist. Nancy is a member of the Schoolcraft Historical Society. Her interest in history began by observing her mother Mary Jane Swartz who was the local historian and the author of “So I’m Told” the history of 19th Century Schoolcraft. Nancy will be speaking to us about the Underground Railroad. I had the pleasure of taking my grandson there last year and found it fascinating. I’m sure you will enjoy her narration of its history. (Kathy Walz, Program Co-Chair) Our meal choices are (please note that there are different prices depending on your choice): 1. September Birthdays!
Bear Hugs from Bambi! Joys of Friendship
Welcome everyone to another year of Kalamazoo Area Newcomers Club. We have another great year ahead of us with new luncheon venues and programs. Many thanks to the board members who put in much time in selecting and securing our venues and speakers. Your board is a great group of ladies who have a heart to make this year a special experience for you. Projects that the board will take on this year are updating the job descriptions and bylaws/constitution for the club. We operate within those structured guidelines and changes are made only with board approval. We update them about every five years to reflect changes in the club. This update will reflect results of the survey you completed. My words of encouragement will be provided in part from a Hallmark published book called Joys of Friendship, a Celebration of Girlfriends.
Friendship is ...a gift that can be opened every day, and it still holds lots of happy, sweet surprises. This warm-hearted and witty collection celebrates the ordinary, everyday moments that make our friendships so extraordinary. From laughing together to going on (and off) diets together, good friends always bring out the best in each other.
I hope you have a wonderful year with us.
Bambi Hamming President

Book Nook meets the third Monday of each month at 10am at Kazoo Books located at 2413 Parkview, Kalamazoo, just west of Oakland Dr. Turn on Book Alley off Barnard Ave. for plenty of parking behind the store. Come join us for great discussions. New members are always welcome! September 19, 2016, The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman Discussion leader: Lois Beaudrie Growing up on idyllic St. Thomas in the early 1800’s, Rachel dreams of life in faraway Paris. Rachel’s mother, a pillar of their small refugee community of Jews who escaped the inquisition, has never forgiven her daughter for being a difficult girl who refuses to live by the rules. Growing up, Rachel’s salvation is their maid Adelle’s belief in her strengths, and her deep, life-long friendship with Jestine, Adelle’s daughter. But Rachel’s life is not her own. She is married off to a widower with three children to save her father’s business. When her husband dies suddenly and his handsome, much younger nephew, Frederick, arrives from France to settle the estate, Rachel seizes her own life story, beginning a passionate love affair that sparks a scandal that affects all of her family, including her favorite son, who will become one of the greatest artists in France. October 17, 2016, Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger Discussion leader: Jane Steimle On the surface, Ordinary Grace is the story of the murder of a beautiful young woman, a beloved daughter and sister. At heart, it’s the story of what that tragedy does to a boy, his family, and ultimately the fabric of the small town in which he lives. Told from Frank’s perspective forty years after that fateful summer, it is a moving account of a boy standing at the door of his young manhood, trying to understand a world that seems to be falling apart around him. It is an unforgettable novel about discovering the terrible price of wisdom and the enduring grace of God. November 21, 2016, The Boston Girl by Anita Diamant Discussion leader: Jane Vandrè
Addie Baum is the Boston Girl, born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood, Addie’s intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine—a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture, and new opportunities for women. Addie wants to finish high school and dreams of going to college. Eighty-five-year-old Addie tells the story of her life to her twenty-two-year-old granddaughter, who has asked her “how did you get to be the woman you are today?” She begins in 1915, the year she found her voice and made friends who would help shape the course of her life. From the one-room tenement apartment she shared with her parents and two sisters, to the library group for girls she joins at a neighborhood settlement house, to her first, disastrous love affair Addie recalls her adventures with compassion for the naïve girl she once was.
