Plunket fundraiser

Facilitator of the Dargaville Quilters club June Horobin-far left and her team, presented 19 quilts to Northern Wairoa area Plunket Nurse Dot Johnson. The quilts will be gifted to families with newborns who need them most. The group received a grant from the Creative Communities scheme to purchase material and the quilts were sewn over a series of workshops.

Maungaturoto identity Albie Paton was not quite so easy to spot at the Irish bowls night held on St Patrick’s Day at the Maungaturoto Bowling Club. Green fish-and-chips or Irish stew were on the menu at the Country Club and many of the players took a hint from the calendar and dressed accordingly.

Shar Lovina and Sharon and Wayne George lend a hand at the Dargaville BNZ street market to help raise money for Plunket. There was a sausage sizzle and a range of second hand clothes, donated by the public. Funds will go to Plunket as part of their appeal month.

World renowned accordionist Kevin Friedrich is back in the Kaipara and will perform alongside friends at his annual variety concert on April 12.

Join Kevin Friedrich and friends for an afternoon of music at the Lighthouse Function Centre on Sunday, April 12

This year’s concert will feature a special military tribute to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli and mark 70 years since the end of WWII.

“Its shaping up to be a wonderful afternoon and all the work for the military tribute is well underway,” says Kevin.

The Afternoon of Music with Kevin Friedrich and Friends will feature a multimedia presentation, by Ken Cashin, paying tribute to local people who have served in active duty for New Zealand, and internationally acclaimed composer Gary Daverne is arranging music, which Kevin will perform.

“The music by Gary Daverne is turning out to be quite interesting and is in three movements: The Journey, Gallipoli and This is Our Home. I’ll also be playing a piece I’ve unearthed called Whangarei March by Albert Dobson — its really beautiful, and I can’t find any records of it ever having been played.”

As always, the afternoon of music will feature an eclectic and memorable variety of talent, including singers, instrumentalists and an accordion orchestra from Auckland. A shared afternoon tea is included and the concert will conclude with a traditional jam session and sing-a-long.

Concert organisers would like to thank everyone who has provided photos and information for the military tribute.

The concert takes place at the Lighthouse Function Centre and starts at 1pm. For more information phone Dargaville Museum 09 439 7555.

Tough trials for rugby league success by Ann Morgan

Dargaville High School students Thomas Anderson and Kane Pomare have made the NorthTec Adam Blair rugby league squad to play against the Warriors Development team.

Thomas and Kane say the trials were “difficult and intense” and they will work hard to work their way up the ladder.

“Being on this team is a good opportunity and a great way to get your name out there,” says Kane.

More than 50 college hopefuls tried out for the squad at Bay of Islands College.

Considering the players had never played together, the standard of rugby league on show gave Coach Jim Larkin some difficult choices.

“We are definitely seeing an improvement in the quality of rugby league being played at college level,” he said.

“I have picked a squad that work to the intensity, equal to what the Warriors will play to. We lack a little bit of size up front but what we lack there will be made up with speed and hard work.”

The game will be part of a Rugby League Northland extravaganza of league with two premiership games being played on the same day.

The match against the Warriors Development team has become an annual highlight on the calendar and this will be the third event.

For the hopeful college players it is a great opportunity to gauge their skills against future Warriors players.

The RLN Premiership season opener is on Saturday, March 28 at the Central Rugby Ground — Lindvart Park in Kaikohe with the curtain raiser starting at 1.30pm.

Fashion fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House

Machinery auction at school

Local business Everyday PA has teamed up with Auckland stylist Chasing Cait to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House.

Together they have put together an exciting prize package, which includes a ‘fashion adventure’ and a fun night away in Auckland.

“Whether you want to go on this adventure with your bestie, shout Mum for Mother’s Day or buy a ticket for someone’s birthday, it’s a really cool prize and 100% of the funds will go to Ronald McDonald House,” says Everyday PA’s Erica Tebbutt.

The Tebbutt family have stayed at Ronald McDonald House on countless occasions over the past eight years and Erica is always looking for opportunities to give back. Ronald McDonald House provides free accommodation for families, from all over New Zealand, who have a child receiving treatment at Starship hospital.

Tickets for the fundraiser are available at Westpac Dargaville or phone Everyday PA on 027 626 9687. Tickets cost $50 each. The winning ticket will be drawn at Westpac at 3.30pm on Friday, April 24.

The total prize package, valued at $1,500, includes one night for two at Citylife Hotel in Auckland including breakfast, valet parking and WiFi, a $250 dinner voucher for Al Brown’s

Tangiteroria School will be hosting a ‘monster machinery auction’ and car boot sale at the Tangiteroria Sports Complex at 10am on Saturday, April 4, to raise funds towards their sports field upgrade.

The students will also be selling raffles and honey from the school hives. The car boot sale is $10 per site.

Offers of support will be welcomed by Daff Adams on 09 433 2989, 021 804 026 or email [email protected]. (Inside the hall if it is wet).

Sophia, Joseph and Erica Tebbutt are grateful to Ronald McDonald House for providing a home away from home

Depot Eatery and Oyster Bar, and two $500 Chasing Cait Stylist packages.

The winners will need to be in Auckland on Friday, May 8, for their styling appointment with Caitlin. One hundred tickets are up for grabs. For more information call Everyday PA on 027 626 9687

Students at Tangiteroria would like to finish their sports field

The facility will consist of a concrete helipad 8m in diameter with a concrete/metalled driveway connection between the existing carpark and helipad itself. There will also be floodlighting and a strobe light on the external east side of the gymnasium. Coupled with the lighting, there will also be an auto-lighting system installed — where the approaching NEST helicopter can activate the lights by remote.

Mr Blundell said the Ruawai Lions Club has been busy fundraising for the remote lighting and the project and on-going maintenance will be funded by

Lions and local Ruawai businesses. “The helipad and lighting means we have a central point, where an ambulance for instance can head to should an en-route emergency with a patient occur. My involvement with Ruawai Volunteer Fire Brigade means I have seen first hand the difference these services can make.”

NEST emergency flights have carried in excess of 17,000 patients to date and at least one third of its flight operations are carried out at night, with pilots and crew having to use night vision goggles in remote area landings.

Redhill renovation begins by Joanne Speechly

Restoration work on Redhill Youth Camp is now underway thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers and widespread support from the community.

It was decided over two meetings last year that if the Methodist camp was to continue, urgent upgrade work was required.

A new management committee was formed and an assessment of the camp buildings revealed that an estimated $30,000 would be needed to bring the property up to certificate of fitness standard.

“The Methodist Church of New Zealand has given the committee a substantial contribution and Te Taha Maori has pledged a further amount. Donations from Kaipara residents and a Northland church have also been very well received but more money is still required,” said Methodist Church of NZ Northland area superintendent, Rowan Smiley.

In November a small working bee spent a day tidying up the buildings and grounds, and making notes of further work required. This month, committee members started work to realign and install new roofing material.

“We are so proud of the new roof and extremely grateful to the volunteers. They worked tirelessly in the hot

Hard at work: Robbie Parker and Bill Sheppard helped to install new roofing material at Redhill Youth Camp

weather for two days, staying overnight at the camp.”

Before pronouncing the dinner blessing on Friday night, co-chairman of the management committee Reverend Kuli Fisi’iahi thanked the volunteers and God for the work that has been done so far.

“It is early days yet, and there’s a lot more to be done, but the committee is enthused by the degree of support in the community and is very grateful. Any offers of support can be made by contacting: Kuli 09 439 8724; Alex 09 439 1783; Craig 09 439 2799; or Bill 09 431 7196.

Brigade gets social by Ayla Miller

Social media is being used to keep the community up to date regarding the work of the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade.

With almost 1,400 ‘likes’, the brigade’s Facebook page has become a hot topic of conversation in the community. The page includes updated information, photos and videos of the work these men and women carry out.

“We have seen a few other fire brigades around the country doing similar things so we have jumped on board,” says Deputy Chief Michael Ross.

He says it was partially motivated by community curiosity. “People often wonder why the siren goes off and we now have updates on the Facebook page.

“When the papers used to come out every day everyone used to know what the emergency services were doing but now they only come out once a week and people still like to know what’s going on. It also helps spread awareness and fire safety messages.

“We are about 10 volunteers down at the moment so are hoping more exposure will encourage people to get involved. We have had an extraordinarily busy summer with a few accidents and suspicious fires, not to mention a cat-in-drain situation. There have been a few feel-good stories.”

The team, Bupa Super Troopers, will start the event together and are aiming to walk across the finish line as a group.

The walk is part of an international series with 17 events being held around the world in 11 countries with this year marking the 10th anniversary.

Participants have a 36 hour timeframe to walk the distance.

“We hope to accomplish the task in 24 hours and are walking through the night to hopefully achieve our target time.

“We will certainly be putting in the hard yards and our goal is to raise $2,500 for Oxfam New Zealand,” said team member Tricia Juretich.

For the love of dance by Ann Morgan

Horrace Maunsell leads all age groups in hip-hop and modern dance. He teaches in Dargaville and his teams have been in the national and world championships with his personally choreographed dances.

“I’ve been involved in dance for years with Sport Northland. There is a great foundation here and the parents are very supportive,” he said.

“I started the group Fame last year for 10 and 12-year-olds, mostly from Dargaville and Ruawai, and I am looking at starting another competition crew here. I also teach other age groups including adult dance, which is great for fitness. I hope to start my own dance studio in Dargaville sometime in the future.

“I like the opportunity that dance gives students as it is another avenue instead of sports. It gives them options and opportunities to travel and compete. I love dance and am passionate about it. We are about to perform in the regional qualifying competitions in Whangarei.

“I grew up in the performing arts and kapa haka and my family decided to branch into dance as an alternative. I started dancing in a group when I was 18 and then decided to tutor others.”

Check out the dance show case at Dargaville Intermediate School on Wednesday, April 1

His dance crews have competed since 2008 and have qualified for competitions in Las Vegas and are often placed first and second in the Northland regional finals.

There will be a showcase of dances presented by the teams at Dargaville Intermediate School on Wednesday, April 1 at 5.30pm.

Fame are performing in the Northland Regional Championships, March 28, at Forum North, Whangarei at 7pm. Tickets at the door are $10.

For more information contact Horrace on 021 051 1777 or Anita on 022 0474 849.

The golden yearsSeeing the real New Zealand by Ayla Miller

The Gold Coast Bush Walkers from Australia are living life to the fullest in their golden years.

A group of 24 cyclists and 12 walkers stayed at the Commercial Hotel in Dargaville for three nights last week, as part of their North Island tour celebrating the club’s 40th anniversary.

“We have three people over 80 in our group and they keep very active,” said trip organiser Ron Layton.

Members are aged between 59 and 80 plus, with an average of 65.

“We love Dargaville. It is a beautiful town. We wanted to see the real New

Zealand and everyone has been so friendly and welcoming to us. You get to see so much more than if you just went to the cities.

“It is a lovely setting here. Our hosts at the Commercial Hotel have been so good as well.

“Dargaville’s biggest export is to stay as you are.”

Age is no barrier to enjoying an active life for these outdoor enthusiasts, with the club regularly organising tramping,

advice to meet your needs in your golden

years and beyond

The golden yearsQuality of life for an aging population by Andy Bryenton

New Zealand’s population is in the midst of the largest demographic transition we have experienced since the end of World War Two.

It is a natural process, but one which will shape the face of our society going into the middle of the 21st Century, changing the way we live and presenting unique new challenges and opportunities.

And while the effects of this change will be felt everywhere, it is here in the Kaipara that the effects of an aging population will be perhaps most clearly apparent, due to the combination of climate and resources which make our region so appealing to retirees.

Statistics New Zealand predicted as early as 2006 that within the next two decades the number of Kiwis aged over 65 will rise to encompass one quarter of the population.

That’s close to 1.5 million older citizens, born in the heyday of the 1950s ‘baby boom’, all seeking a better lifestyle after years of hard work in the civic centres of our country. It’s natural that many of these folks will turn their attention north to the sunnier climes and natural beauty of the Kaipara, with relatively reasonable property prices, access to coastlines, lakes and forests, and the amenities of towns such as Dargaville providing medical services, retail, and a swift transport link to Auckland.

At the same time, advances in medical care mean that these over 65s will likely have many happy and productive years ahead of them when they finally down tools and enjoy some well-earned rest. Indeed, if statistics are to be believed, many will continue to work well into their 70s, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the region.

All of which brings into focus the importance of having a good infrastructure to support what may become the biggest, fastest growing sector of our local population. It is already noteworthy that Dargaville boasts full

hospital facilities for increased medical care and coverage, but an expansion may well be needed to on-call services to preserve the independence of older residents choosing to remain in their own homes. Some of these may well be in far-flung or remote areas, chosen for their natural beauty rather than their accessibility to care. Villages, such as those situated in Maungaturoto, at Riverdale in Dargaville, or the Masonic villages maintained by the regional trust are likely to grow; indeed, this option may become the largest driver of the building market by 2050.

Inevitably, retirement homes with full care on site will also have to grow to meet demand. An example is the recent expansion at Dargaville’s Norfolk Court — now equipped with full facilities not just for round-the-clock nursing care, but also including 18 hospital beds for those who require a higher tier of support. It’s pertinent to note that dementia care is also in high demand already across the country, and while this can be a difficult subject to discuss, it is one which must be addressed with compassion and resources to ensure quality of life

for seniors affected by conditions such as Alzheimers.

Across the nation, families, individuals and whole agencies of government are preparing for this seismic shift in our population. Here in the north, we are prepared to face the challenges and

embrace the opportunities which an aging population brings, looking forward to 2050 and beyond.

Getting down to business by by Ayla Miller

The Dargaville Business Forum is gearing up to boost the potential of commerce in Dargaville, with sub committees covering beautification, selling the town, events and welcoming new businesses into the area.

Forum member Sharon George says they will be holding after work drinks at the Central Hotel on March 31 as part of a support network for local businesses.

“There have been about 20 new businesses opening up recently and we are holding this event so everyone can get to know each other.

“The forum provides a support system for businesses and hopes to draw them all together so we can work on creating a positive environment in Dargaville.

Chairperson Pat Milich says: “The business forum has been running for four years. We have a lot of young enthusiastic people and are really making some progress.”

For updates and more information see Dargaville Business Forum Facebook page or email [email protected].

Poppy flags on parade by Joanne Speechly

Fundraising is underway for a new set of Remembrance sails to grace the main street of Dargaville.

Margaret Bishop had the idea when she and husband John were tasked with taking down some promotional flags recently.

“I said to John ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have some Commemorative sails that could fly for several weeks before ANZAC Day?’ and he said ‘Well, if you think it’s a good idea, do something about it’ — so I did.

“We’ve already raised enough money for four sets of flags and we’re aiming for seven sets in total.

“People who wish to donate can do so at BNZ Bank, ANZ Bank or MOA and if they need a receipt, they can leave a donation with me at Newman Engineering.”

Margaret says she is on a mission to make sure that people in the Kaipara — particularly in Dargaville and its environs — remember those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today.

“Because we are a bit late for funding from outside the district at this point, we need to ask the residents, service clubs and business people in Dargaville to dig deep in their pockets to assist us to raise funds for these new Commemorative Sails.”

The plan is to fly the new sails during the months of March and April each year. Each set of banners cost $722 plus GST.
