Year 9 STEM
This year we have a new Year 9 Enrichment Program; STEM, Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The class has been investigating underwater, remote operated vehicles. Through this project, they have explored the concepts of neutral buoyancy, propulsion, electronics and the design process. Their vehicles were all operational, but there were a number of challenges that had to be overcome for maximum efficiency of operation.

On Monday 18th March, as part of National Science Week, four Year 10 students and Mr Hartley travelled to Griffith University Gold Coast Campus for the World Science Festival Apprentice Program.
As part of the program, the students were able to tour Griffith University’s Advanced Design and Prototyping Technologies Institute (ADaPT). ADaPT combines expertise in micro and nano science, with big data analytics, artificial intelligence, complex medical imaging and functional modelling and the latest in 3D printing and bioengineering. The students were introduced to the future possibilities of 3D printing for health, business and cultural heritage purposes.
The students then put their engineering skills to the test in a practical activity in which they were required to design, build and test a model bridge. The aim was to construct the lightest bridge that can support the heaviest load. Our students did Kadina proud and produced the strongest bridge on the day, constructing a bridge that could withstand 3.5kg which was equivalent to 113 times its own weight!
Overall, the students had a great experience and enjoyed the opportunities to explore the university campus and various programs being offered in Science.

Year 9 and Year 11 & 12 History students learnt about the power of artefacts to bring history alive during a visit by Shane Blackman of Living History on Tuesday. Mr Blackman used a range of World War I weapons and equipment and his extensive knowledge to highlight the conditions and experiences of young people in the trenches of WWI. Students were particularly surprised to hold a grenade, bayonets, clothing, and helmets – each telling their own story of a life-changing experience for the grandparents of their parents.
The visit forms part of a unit on “Australians at War” that explores the personal and social impacts of both World Wars on Australian society. Kadina High would like to thank Mr Blackman for visiting the school and sharing his knowledge and resources.
