Becky Oliver and I took the largest group of eighth grade students to Washington DC ever on Sunday, March 7, 2010. And, somehow, each year we travel down to Washington DC with our students it is the best trip yet! This year’s trip to the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington DC was made even more memorable be-cause the Grade 8 students have spent their Midrasha year learning about anti-Semitism and the Holocaust on Monday evenings at TBA. Nineteen students, Becky Oli-ver and I flew down to Baltimore early on Sunday morn-ing, met a car service that drove us to Washington DC, and spent the day learning and exploring. We enjoyed beautiful spring weather, were fortunate that our flights were on time, and we were the first group to enter the Museum on that Sunday morning. Although the subject matter was difficult and sometimes even painful, we all enjoyed each other’s company and the sense of com-munity that has been built with these students over the years. We accomplished a great deal in a short amount of time and though we came home tired, we were ful-filled. In addition to spending most of the day in the Mu-seum, we walked along the National Mall, saw the historic

monuments that give Washington its unique character, and ate sno-cones in the warm sunshine.

We are blessed to have extraordinary young people at Temple Beth Avodah. We spoke with one another about the meaning of memory, the centrality of the Ho-locaust experience to modern Jewish life and identity, and the obligation each of us has to perpetuate Jewish traditions, ideas and practices. This year, we even put together a short memorial service and brought copies with us so that we could say Kaddish and read Holo-caust reflections from survivors in the actual Memorial section of the Museum. Becky and I found the stu-dents to be thoughtful, sensitive, wise and sincere. We should feel confident that the legacy and future of the Jewish community is being transmitted to such mature and compassionate young people
