Chapter 2 Safety Instructions
2.1 Supply and Synchronization
Complex network architectures can often be found in an automotive or industrial environment. To geta proper impression about the system behavior i.e., to analyze the complete data transfer over allconnected automotive or industrial bus systems it is required to refer all data relative to a commontime base. This can be achieved by connecting different devices e.g., Espresso T1S devices and othercapable K2L devices (e.g., OptoLyzer® MOCCA devices, INICnetTM 50utp Sniffer) over a timesynchronization cable (i.e., SYNC cable V3). The synchronization cable is also capable of carryingpower.
When concatenating Espresso T1S devices and other capable K2L devices one of the two Sync/Powerconnectors is intended to be used for the power supply and the other for cascading the Espresso T1Sdevice or another capable K2L device by using the optional SYNC cable V3.
During cascading, caution has to be taken, since the first device in the chain can take the maximumcurrent of 4 A. Do not cascade more than five devices in chain.
For all setups either a fuse of max. 4 A in the supply cable to the first device or the use of the currentlimitation of the laboratory power supply is mandatory.
2.2 Restrictions in Operation
The Espresso T1S integrates temperature sensitive components. Therefore do not cover the devicewith any objects. Covering disables the passive cooling. Make sure to allow enough airflow to theEspresso T1S, when the device is assembled. Do never place the running Espresso T1S in a closedcase or box. Do not stack any Espresso T1S devices.
Figure 2.1 Device Arrangement (Example)
The Espresso T1S is not intended to be used in an EMC test environment.
Espresso T1S
Chapter 3 Introduction
The Espresso T1S™ device is a new hardware interface solution for 10BASE-T1S networks. Ifconnected in a 10BASE-T1S network, it is able to spy all Ethernet frames transmitted over the10BASE-T1S network. It does not increase the number of nodes in the network. The Espresso T1Sdevice provides three spy modes, namely a promiscuous mode that is able to show all 10BASE-T1SEthernet frames, an extended mode that additionally shows BEACON symbols and a full spy modethat captures in addition to the 10BASE-T1S Ethernet frames also all 10BASE-T1S PHY level events(e.g., BEACON, COMMIT, etc) that are sent or received.
The Espresso T1S device is equipped with two 10BASE-T1S connectors (each with two pins) to beconnected in a 10BASE-T1S network. A 10/100BASE-TX interface allows to connect it to the PC fordata- and control communication. In combination with OptoLyzer® Studio 10BASE-T1S bus systemscan be easily examined. The Espresso T1S device supports time synchronization with other capableK2L devices. For more details refer to Section 2.1, "Supply and Synchronization," on page 8.
Figure 3.1 Example of an 10BASE-T1S Network with Espresso T1S Device
The image above shows an example of a 10BASE-T1S network with an Espresso T1S device. Referto the Online help of the OptoLyzer Studio to get more details about how to connect the OptoLyzerStudio properly when using it in combination with an Espresso T1S device. The Espresso T1S devicesupports bus termination that can be controlled e.g., in the OptoLyzer Studio.
For custom applications (based on Windows operating system), the Espresso T1S device can also becontrolled with the help of K2L.Bus, which is an open .NET API. The K2L.Bus API provides user-programmable access to the Espresso T1S device. Thus users can write their own application basedon K2L's API K2L.Bus instead of using the Espresso T1S device together with OptoLyzer Studio.Various examples describe how the API can be applied (refer to the OptoLyzer Studio Foundationproduct page and download the K2L.BUS example for more details: http://www.K2L.de).
Keeping the firmware of the hardware interface up to date can easily be accomplished with the freeof charge edition of K2L’s OptoLyzer Studio (Lite Edition).

3.2 Block Diagram
The block diagram shows the principle structure of the Espresso T1S device.
Figure 3.2 Block Diagram for Espresso T1S
The Espresso T1S device is connected to a 10BASE-T1S bus. It is spying all data transmitted overthe 10BASE-T1S network. If needed, a termination can be enabled which can be controlled via theOptoLyzer Studio software. Afterwards the data are scanned and timestamped in the Tool Phy. Thespied data are transferred to the connected PC via a 10/100BASE-TX connection. The OptoLyzerStudio is able to trace, monitor, analyze and store the data for further purposes.

3.3 Properties of Supported Bus Systems
The Espresso T1S device is intended to be used as analysis device for automotive and industrial fieldbuses with DUTs connected to them without interfering with the rest of the system. Therefore, thedesign is constrained to ensure the behavior to be as passive as possible.
3.3.1 Ethernet (RJ45)
This connector allows to control the device through the standard Ethernet connection from a PC, e. g.,to start the twinkle identification or to set 10BASE-T1S parameters. The physical layer is 10/100BASE-TX.
3.3.2 10BASE-T1S
The Tool Phy will timestamp any kind of 10BASE-T1S events with a resolution of 100 ns and a timesynchronization accuracy of better than 800 ns between two devices.

INTERFACE DESCRIPTION
Trigger In The trigger can be used to control actions of the device (e.g., connect a push button used to create a specific event and indicate the behavior of the network in a log file later). It depends on the loaded firmware whether the trigger is supported or not. E.g., refer to the OptoLyzer Studio to check whether the current device version supports the trigger (sources: online help, device manager, system info).
Trigger Out The trigger can be used to send a high signal. For details about the output voltage refer to Table 6.3, “Technical Values of the Triggers,” on page 18. The trigger can be used e.g., for the start of a diagnosis process or to control a data logger. It depends on the loaded firmware whether the trigger is supported or not. E.g., refer to the OptoLyzer Studio to check whether the current device version supports the trigger (sources: online help, device manager, system info).
10BASE-T1S Pin 1
Both 10BASE-T1S connectors can be used equivalently. For details about the pin assignment refer to Section 5.5, "10BASE-T1S Connector".
