Target

K. Long, Monday, 06 July 2009

Critical path:

• Issue: target shaft:– Two approaches to shaft manufacture planned:

• ‘One piece’: weld two pieces together, then grind to size• ‘Two piece’: grind to size, then weld

– One-piece shaft has failed:• Grinding company removed too much material and compromised weld:

– One shaft ‘fell apart’ at grinders;– Others have too little material for weld to be considered sound

– Therefore now moving on to weld preparation for two-piece shafts

Impact on schedule:• Shaft manufacture now ~3 weeks behind schedule• Can recover, but need to take care fixing two

pieces of shaft together:– Electron-beam weld ‘baseline’:– Alternatives are being considered:

• Pin, pin and weld, …– If Jason concludes that an alternative fixing scheme

should be adopted will present paper to TB for consideration

• There is risk here!– Well aware of need to install target in August shutdown

• Also well aware of continuing requirement to maintain high standards of quality control and tracking of manufacture
