Kamp KiwanisKamp Kiwanis, located in Taberg, NY (Central Lakes division), is a camp that is aimed at providing

fun, physical exercise and adventure. The program at Kamp Kiwanis is designed to mainstream all

children; children with special needs and those without. This means that children with special needs won't

feel like they're “different” or “separate” from the “normal” kids. It strives to afford opportunities to

participate in a creative outdoor group experience in a democratic setting and develop characteristics

of leadership and fair play. It is non-competitive with emphasis on group and team building. No activity is

forced, but all are encouraged.

Kiwanis PediatricLyme Disease (KPLD)

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usuallytransmitted by the deer tick. This affects the brainin many ways, most commonly, a disturbance incognition (thinking).Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue. Thosewho are treated early with antibiotics do well andincur no long term problems while those who aren'ttreated right away may have a more complicatedcourse. Sadly, treatment for Lyme disease is very expensive and often times, not covered by most insurance companies. As of January 2007, the KPLD foundation has paid approximately $140,000 for pediatric treatment for those with this growingdisease. While we are focusing on funding for pediatric treatment, remember that any personcan be infected for weeks, months, years or evena lifetime. The rash that comes along with it is ugly!(Google it at your own expense!)

How can we help KPLD?We can all help by donating towards the Kiwanis PediatricTrauma Center. Funding should be the last reason why achild should have to live his or her's life any differently incomparison to any other child without Lyme Disease. The Brittany Fellowship Medallion and Plaque award isnamed after a 16 year-old girl who is engaged in a longand difficult battle since the age of two because of Lymedisease. In April 1998, she suffered a setback and wasremoved from school for two years. There were times whenshe her fragile body would slump to the floor in a fetalposition, limp and exhausted. Today, Brittany is intravenouslytreated for about 45 minutes daily and takes prescriptiondrugs routinely. The weekly costs of these drugs range from$800 to $1,000. There is no cure for her and this is her life, complicated at best. To receive this award to supportLyme disease and to recognize an outstanding LTG,club, district, member, officer or individual, go organizea fundraiser and donate $500 to the Kiwanis PediatricLyme Disease Foundation.

The New York District of

Circle K International was awarded this award

on November 19th, 2011. The money raised was

through two different Kiwanis Family fundraisers. One

was the K-Family picnic which was held in July of 2011

and the second was a bowl-a-thon that was held in

October of 2011. Together, we were able to raise

$720 for the Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease

Foundation.

For more information, contact myself orJohn Gridley, the NY Kiwanis Governor during2000-2001 who brought Lyme Disease to Kiwanis'attention and vowed to do something to help these children.
