September & October in Review

Many clubs had great events, service projects and socials going on throughout the first couple months of the school year. The following pages offer some great

recaps of what went on!

MSOE’s Meaningful Makeover Recap By: Sarah Tate

Its name speaks for itself. Every year, MSOE’s Circle K goes to the Salvation Army Emergency Lodge and does what we like to call a “Meaningful Makeover.” It is exactly that too, we go to the Lodge and paint and furnish a room with things that people staying there usually don’t have. Typically, we furnish the room with bedding, storage, towels, pillows, blanks, decorations, and more! The room goes through a total transformation that brings so much life and happiness into the room. MSOE Circle K’s Vice President Michael Prochaska expressed, “Seeing the environment there at the shelter and seeing all the families with a kid and even multiple kids and knowing that we were able to bring a bit of life to one of those families was something you don't understand the joy of doing unless you were involved in the project.”

On September 27th, Circle K did yet another Meaningful Makeover. This time, we redid a family room. We actually crossed paths with the family that would be staying in the room, which was awesome because that has never happened before. Prochaska stated, “It was very cool to have the family who was going to be living in the room see the makeover happening and seeing the look on their faces was definitely explainable. They didn't seem to know why or what was really happening, but knowing they would enjoy what they were seeing unravel was definitely exciting.” This was Michaels first year doing the Meaningful Makeover along with many others that participated in this event. A new member this year, Allie Graves, explained that, “This was my first event with Circle K and the experience was amazing. It was really cool and a lot of fun and it really makes me want to be more involved with Circle K.” The Meaningful Makeover is one of Circle K members’ favorite events. Everyone always has a wonderful time, loves the experience, bonds with each other, and receives an unforgettable feeling of good and happiness knowing that we are able to brighten people’s days just by giving them things that many of us take for granted. All of this could not be done without a donation from Kiwanis. So with immense gratitude, thank you for the donation and making the experience possible for us and those that benefit from our Meaningful Makeover.

Alverno’s Midnight Masquerade Recap By: Lena Scheibengraber

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Witches and demons and skeletons, oh dear! Candy corn and Facebook Creepers and Carmen Sandiego, oh… wait, you all probably get the picture.

On October 24th, Alverno Circle K hosted their yearly Halloween dance- Midnight

Masquerade. This award-winning social is put on as a fundraiser for the ELIMINATE Project, showing the clubs dedication to ridding the world of maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). The evening started out a little quiet, with a few people hanging out near the food and drink options or working on small service projects that were provided. The evening of fun quickly picked up the pace, however, when the Cupid Shuffle, Wobble and Cha Cha Slide were played. Circle Kers and non-Circle Kers alike made their way to the dance floor, soon to realize that hours had passed while they were dancing.

To give people a break from sweating, Alverno Circle K President, Elizabeth

O’Hara, took the time to thank everyone for coming and posed a new way to give: by entering yourself or someone else to a lip-synch on the stage. The idea was simple: donate a couple of dollars and get up there to make a fool out of yourself, pump up the crowd, or get everyone on their feet. Many people got on stage to show their talent- Joey Palzewicz from MSOE, Samantha Robinson from Alverno, Taryn Grisham from the Madison Young Professionals Kiwanis Club, and yes, I even got up there. I’m pretty sure my favorite act was “Anaconda”, in which four MSOE Circle K members performed. Yes, I took video and yes, I can share.

At the end of the night, there was a costume contest split into different categories:

most clever, most scary, and cutest. Most clever went to Catarina Erba of Alverno for her costume, Tina Belcher. Scariest went to Alesia Milliner for her costume, a voodoo witch doctor. And finally, cutest went to Alyssa DeFazio, a giraffe who forgot what she dressed up as! Her response to what she was? “A pirate!” Cute indeed.

Everyone finished the evening by watching some creative lip-synch offs and

handing out prizes. All in all, the night was truly spooktacular! I don’t know about you, but I am looking forward to next year!
