Director Laurence Olivier
Cast Laurence Olivier, Eileen Herlie, Jean Simmons, Basil Sydney, Felix Aylmer.
One of the finest films ever made of the bard's plays, Sir Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet
has hastened the action of the play and simplified its central character. From the
moment when Hamlet is charged to avenge the murder of his royal father he is
shown as a sane but sensitive, virile but vacillating prince - a man who could not
make up his mind, yet as robust as Olivier’s screen portrayal of Henry V.
Olivier’s version opts for a fully fleshed out period feel, complemented
by a beautiful score by William Walton. The film’s Gothic grimness and formal, stylized
acting give it a resonance that seems to come from much farther back than just
over five decades ago, rather from Shakespeare’s own time.
Olivier also gives one of his greatest performances as the brooding
title character, his reward was at the 1948 Academy Awards, winning Best Picture
and Best Actor.

Director Michael Radford
Cast Massimo Troisi, Philippe Noiret, Maria Grazia Cucinotta, Linda Moretti.
One of the new comparative film texts for 2005/6, Il Postino is set in 1952 on a
small Italian island where nothing much happens. Until, that is, the arrival of
renowned Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret) who has been exiled from his
homeland and needs a place to stay. Neruda's fame is such that he receives letters
from all over the world, and the island needs a special postman to deliver his mail.
Italian comic actor Massimo Troisi plays Mario Ruoppolo, who applies for the job
and is successful. Curious about the island’s new resident, who seems to have an
almost magical power over women, Mario finds the courage to engage the poet in a
conversation about writing. This marks the beginning of an unusual friendship, with
Mario listening to Neruda's poetic ideas, and the poet teaching Mario about poetry
and its relationship to life.

When an Amish boy witnesses a murder, hard-boiled cop John Book is assigned to
the case. As both his own and the boy’s life come under threat, he is forced to hide
with him among the Amish community. Book takes some time to get used to the
different way of life, but attracted by the boy’s mother Rachel, he soon discovers a
whole different world from the one he is used to. At first treated with healthy
scepticism, he proves himself a valuable member of the community. Directed by
Peter Weir, who made a seamless transition to Hollywood from Australian movies,
Witness is graced by Ford’s first immaculate performance. Grippingly handled,
without so much as a whisper of moralising, this perfectly judged, almost flawless
film is powerful, assured and full of beautiful imagery.

French filmmakers have long been drawn to stories about the Second World War and
the German Occupation. But this film, set in Paris in 1940, takes a light-hearted look
at wartime France. The result is an often hilarious caper movie, which successfully
combines fast action with comedy. Naïve young writer Frédéric (Grégori Derangère) is
set up by manipulative film actress Viviane (Isabelle Adjani) and sent to prison for the
murder of her lover. As news of the German invasion spreads, everyone flees south
to Bordeaux, including Viviane and her new lover Jean-Etienne Beaufort, Minister for
the Interior (Gérard Depardieu). Frédéric, who has escaped from prison with hundreds
of others, also heads south with Raoul, a fellow prisoner. They meet Camille (Virginie
Ledoyen) an attractive, young science student, who, with her mentor Professor
Kopolski, wants to transport a secret weapon to England.
A sophisticated farce in high style from Academy Award-nominated
director Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Bon Voyage is fast-paced and genuinely funny, with
enjoyable performances from the cast, especially Isabelle Adjani as selfish screen
goddess Viviane.

Summer, 1954. The Soviet Union is sending its prisoners of war home. Among them is
the father of a quiet, football-loving 11-year-old, Matthias, who lives with his mother,
sister and brother in a West-German mining town. The boy has long found a surrogate
father in the local football player Helmut Rahn, who has “adopted” Matthias as his
mascot. The return of the boy’s father Richard casts a shadow over the once-happy
family: broken by his years in captivity, Richard has trouble adapting to life in post-war
Germany and alienates his family through his severity. For Richard, football is pointless,
and so is the World Cup that’s about to be held in Bern, Switzerland. Matthias, however,
longs to be there with his idol, who’s been chosen to play on the German team. Through
his passion for the game and his fighting spirit, Matthias rekindles a love of life in his
dad’s heart. And so, as the final match of the World Cup begins, a little miracle of
love and generosity leaps across borders to help another miracle occur - the victory
of Helmut Rahn and the German team, the miracle of Bern.
With The Miracle of Bern, director and ex-football player Soenke
Wortmann has brilliantly succeeded in setting an intensely emotional and touching
family drama against the exhilarating, authentic background of West Germany’s
miraculous World Cup victory in 1954.

“For the people who used to be 10 years old,
and the people who are going to be 10 years old.”
Hayao Miyazaki
Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) is a fantasy adventure with
a ten year-old girl, which starts in everyday Japan but goes somewhere very different.
For young Chihiro and her family, a mysterious tunnel and haunted town lead to the
Land of Spirits, inhabited by gods and monsters and ruled by the greedy witch Yu-baba.
Chihiro’s parents are transformed into pigs; to rescue them, she must surrender
her name and serve in this world. Luckily she finds friends and allies, including the
handsome but mysterious boy Haku. Initially sulky and listless, Chihiro (or Sen, as
she’s now called) finds inner strengths and establishes an identity in this strange
world. But can she win back her name and return home?
This English language version has been flawlessy dubbed under
the direction of John Lasseter of Toy Story, Bug’s Life and Finding Nemo fame.
Spirited Away was winner of the 2003 Academy Award for
Best Feature Animation.

This lively new film tells the story of
Mei, Kenny, Ciarán and Niamh - four
teenagers coping with a tangle of
friendships, family life and local politics
in present day Belfast. Mei, a local
Chinese girl, finds that falling in love
with Kenny, a Protestant boy, is far from
simple. Sparks fly for both of them
when their relationship overlaps with
that of Ciarán and Niamh from the
Catholic Falls Road. The film explores
the idea of identity and belonging with a keen observational eye and
dark Belfast humour. Shot on location in Belfast, the sharp writing is
augmented by strong performances from the local young cast and a
brilliant score by John O’Neill of The Undertones.

My Beautiful Laundrette
This sequel to director John Duigan’s poignant The Year My Voice Broke follows
anti-hero Danny Embling (Noah Taylor) to the boy’s boarding school in rural
Australia. Danny is a clever misfit, teased by his schoolmates for his strange tastes
and his shy stutter, and misunderstood by his cane-wielding teachers at the rigorous
St. Albans. Danny’s sense of humor and rebellious spirit attracts the attention of
Thandiwe (Thandie Newton), a sophisticated Ugandan-English girl who attends the
neighboring girl’s boarding school across the river. Thandiwe is an outcast as well,
ostracized for the color of her skin. The two loners find understanding in one another,
defying the rules of their schools and society, to meet with one another and share
secrets, stories, and heartache, as well as a burgeoning sense of desire. Nicole
Kidman co-stars as Nicola Radcliffe, a snobbish upperclassman put in charge of
looking after Thandiwe, who eventually grows to understand the young girl’s affection
for Danny. Duigan’s keen sense of the poignant and realistic maturity of teenage
rebels choosing to live life by their own terms delivers a touching and emotionally
charged coming-of-age drama.

“Baran”, which also means “rain” in Farsi, is the name of a young Afghan woman
(Zahra Bahrami) who has disguised herself as a boy in order to get employment on
a construction site after her father is injured and unable to work. Latif (Hossein
Abedini), a lonely Iranian who has the cushiest job on the site as the tea pourer,
at first resents the young man, “Rahmat’, who ends up displacing him in that
position. But when he accidentally discovers her true sex, he falls madly in love
with her. When she has to leave work, along with all the other illegally employed
Afghans, he sets out to track her down.
Majid Majidi’s third feature set against the backdrop of the plight of
1.4 million illegal Afghan refugees in Iran is a tale of two young people slowly
beginning to find each other resulting in a film whose overwhelming sense of
humanity and sense of uncertainty are remarkable to behold.
