Fair Board Meeting When: Wednesday, June 15 Time: 6:30 p.m. Where: CSUE meeting room Please call the Extension office if you would like to be on the agenda.

Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines… The office will strictly enforce all deadlines. Remember, meeting deadlines is a valuable life skill. Our office will make it a priority to get information out in a timely manner, so that you have time to meet the deadlines. Occasionally, if we’ve gotten information late or after the newsletter has gone out for the month, deadlines will be shorter.

Community Service Thank you Thank you for selling duck adoption papers in support of the Rotary 43 fundraiser. We are happy to support Rotary in their efforts to raise money for their dictionary program. 4-H sold 147 duck adoptions, so the 4-H Foundation will get $147. Rotary 43 is again sponsoring Adventure Day Camp this year- with a $2000 grant.

4-H Truck Tickets Truck Tickets are here! We will once again be selling the truck raffle tickets in 2011. Ford has donated a 2011 Ford F-150 XLT 4 X 4 Super Crew pickup truck to Colorado 4-H. But, there is more good news…..we have added more prizes:

1. Grand Prize – pickup truck 2. 2nd prize – gas grill 3. 3 & 4th prizes – each $750.00 in cash 4. 5th prize - $500.00 cash 5. Other smaller prizes.

This is a great 4-H club fundraiser – your club gets $2.00 for every $5.00 ticket sold. This is a great rate of return. The county ticket sales will end August 16, 2011 with the drawing done during at the Colorado State Fair on September 5, 2011. Please start talking to your clubs NOW about this fundraising opportunity. Last year, $880.00 was distributed to local councils, 4-H clubs and the Pueblo County 4-H Foundation. This is a great way to raise money for your club. They may be checked out at the Pueblo County Extension Office. For more information, contact Carol in the office. We also have a truck banner and posters you may check out for any sales event.

2011 National Science Experiment Announcing the 2011 National Science Experiment: Wired for Wind! 4-H National Headquarters and National 4-H Council are pleased to reveal that the 2011 National Science Experiment is Wired for Wind, an in-depth look at renewable energy technologies in the form of wind-power. Developed by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension program, this three-tiered experiment will help 4-H young people to enhance their science, engineering, technology and applied math skills by allowing them to: • Design, build and test two different wind turbine models, • Experiment with variables by examining three different blade pitch angles to determine the effect of pitch on rotor speed, • Relate their scientific experiences back to their own lives by determining how their communities can harness the power of wind and create a more sustainable and clean energy system, and • Determine the best location for a potential wind farm in their state or local area by calculating wind power and studying wind data and maps. This year, 4-H National Youth Science Day will take place on October 5, 2011. On this day, hundreds of thousands of young people across the United States and the world will simultaneously become scientists for a day as they connect important scientific lessons to civic engagement. 4-H youth are a living, breathing, culture-changing movement for doing the right thing, breaking through obstacles and pushing the country forward to successfully face the challenges of the future. Participation in 4-H National Youth Science Day is meant to help spark an early passion for science, engineering and math and to encourage young people to consider these paths of study and future careers. To learn more about 4-H National Youth Science Day, how you can participate locally or to download program

DOG

Upcoming Dog Shows The next dog show will be held Saturday, June 18 starting with registration at 8:30 and the show beginning at 9:30 a.m. Advanced show entries can be obtained on the Pueblo County 4-H website or through your 4-H leader. This show will be held in the Ag Palace and sponsored by the Pups & Hounds 4-H Club. All 4-H Obedience, Showmanship, and Rally classes will be offered. The third show will be sponsored by Greenhorn Valley Kickers and take place at Craver Middle School on Saturday, August 6. This will be a show-and-go type show and we will have our Pueblo County 4-H Dog Project Annual Pot Luck Lunch. This show will also be informal – you will not need to dress up for showmanship – this is a fun day, but scores will count for those needing an additional score before State Fair. State Fair placements will not be announced at County Fair, but will be announced shortly after the August 6 show. County Fair Dog Show will be held in the Ag Palace on Tuesday, July 12 starting with registration at 8:30 a.m. and show at 9:00 a.m. REMINDER – You must show your own dog that you own or co-own with someone; otherwise you will be showing for EXHIBITION ONLY and will receive a participation ribbon.

County Fair Test and e-Record Requirement Remember, you must score at least a 60% on your dog test to be able to show at the 2011 County Fair. If you took the test in May, you may call the Extension Office for your score. The final test date will be Monday, June 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the 4-H Assembly and Dining Hall at the fairgrounds. Record books requirements include scoring at least a 70% on your e-record to be able to show in the dog project in 2012. If you did not drop your dog project by the add/drop date in March then you are required to do a record book to avoid a zero. If you do not do your record book and did not drop you will not be able to show dogs in 2012. E-records are due September 7. If you have questions about this policy, contact Carol in the Extension Office.

Every item donated will get you a ticket into a drawing for a fabulous prize to be awarded that day. PAWS is looking for cleaning items like bleach and powerdered detergent; housing items like towels, blankets, toys, dog food; and operational items like copy paper, toilet pa-per, dry erase markers and trash bags. HORSE

Mark This Date On Your Calendar – SUNDAY, JULY 31, 2011

The Only Moneymaker For Horse Council Mark July 31 on your calendar and plan on spending the day earning money for the Pueblo County 4-H Horse Council. Last year the Horse Council earned $3,910 in a short amount of time. Little Britches has offered to let us do it again this year. They stated that we did a great job so we need to do the same this year. We are also planning a pizza party after the cleanup. MARK JULY 31 ON YOUR CALENDAR – WE NEED EVERYONE’S HELP!!!!!

Volunteers Needed For County Fair Horse Show Remember, sign up sheets will be available County Fair at the next Horse Council test date and meeting in July. It is your responsibility to sign up when you help. We need everyone’s participation to make our horse shows run smoothly.

Round Robin Judging for Horse Records in 2011 The 4-H Horse Record Books for 2010 will be judged with a ―round robin type judging‖ process. This is the same as last year. This is an opportunity for you to be an active part of the horse project in Pueblo County. If you would like to be part of this process, please contact Carol in the CSU Extension Office. This is a great way to learn what to look for and how to correctly fill out the horse e-records. We will grade in the evenings on September 15, 22 and 29.

Stall Policy Stall Policy The Stall Policy for the Spring, Summer and County Fair will be as follows:

$15.00 per stall (this applies to full or part time use at shows)

If you do not clean your stall, an additional $10.00 will be due

Club leaders will be checking stalls after the shows and reported to superintendents and the office

Shavings must be purchased through the vendor at the Colorado State Fairgrounds.

Tack stalls are no charge

Cleaning of stalls includes raking and piling outside the stall where a bobcat can scoop it up and dispose of it.

If we continue to do a good job at cleaning stalls, our fee will remain at $15.00; otherwise the fairgrounds can charge us up to $25.00 per stall. Let’s all work together and save some $$$$.

Horse Show Judges The following horse show judges have been contracted for the County fair: Western, English — Lindsey Berbee Ranch Horse — Samantha Gagas Foal & Green Horse and Western Trail — TBA

Horse Council The next horse council meeting and test day is July 5 at the Fairgrounds in the Auditorium. Testing starts at 5:30 p.m. The Horse Council meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. After the meeting, tests will resume until 7:30 p.m.

Rodeo China Congratulations to Ryan Vargas from Team Comanche 4-H Club in Rye, Colorado. Ryan was one of 20 youth selected to represent the United State in China in October. This is a historic event in Beijing China this fall. This notable event will feature an eight-day professional rodeo to be held from October 3-10, 2011, at the Bird’s Nest National Arena (site of the 2008 Olympic Games). The Colorado 4-H program has been asked to be part of this effort to introduce the people of China to the culture of the American West through the art and science of rodeo. The Colorado 4-H program, Colorado FFA, and the National Little Britches Rodeo Association (NLBRA) were asked to enlist youth from their respective organizations to travel to China for this event. The youth component of this project will directly involve American youth teaching rodeo events and livestock handling principles to approximately 3,000 Chinese youth.
