SSA KL MEMBERS HAD A VISIT AT TENMOKU POTTERY IN THIS ISSUE

Hello Members,

Welcome back to another newsletter, Time flies by, Summer is here and it is that time of the year

where most of us plan for a vacation back home or for most of us it is that time where we need to say goodbye to most of our dear friends who need to move on to a different location, I am sure it is a tough challenge but at the same time it is exciting for a new change you are about to embark.

It has been a year in KL, Last summer we moved to Kl from Houston with lot of expectations and the journey so far has been really enriching. Kl gave me an opportunity to meet some interesting people, make friends and also understand the true meaning to live “Life “at the fullest. Within my 3 months stay in Kl, I was given the opportunity to serve the SSA chapter as KL Coordinator. Initially I was really worried whether I would carry on this huge responsibility but with the

SSA team by my side, I was able to accomplish this task with ease. This opportunity instilled a sense of responsibility and also courage to carry on this role.

I was able to appreciate the efforts that goes to make a wonderful coffee morning, an interesting activity or even helping the refugee people. Thank you SSA board members for your time and energy as well your commitment to our KL SSA.

We have some interesting activities planned after summer, so do have a great summer and join us back to experience some fun activities and wonderful coffee mornings.

Here is famous quote from~ Jose Ortega Gasset+- Life is an operation which is done in a forward direction. One lives toward the future, because to live consists inexorably in doing, in each individual life making itself.

Have a great summer!

The SSA Charity Team has grown in size and has been busy. At our April coffee,

we had a book sale and a used clothes drive. We now have children’s books for sale, which is proving to be popular with our members. Thank you for your book donations! We also collected many lovely used clothes that were taken to the Sahabat Support Centre. We filled a minivan with your kind donations! We also brought many gift bags to the SSC, filled with our donations of travel-sized toiletries from hotels and airlines. We heard that the refugees at the center really liked their gift bags. Please continue to collect those and bring to our coffee mornings.

Handicrafts sale to benefit the Sahabat Support Centre.

In May, we had our charity raffle, used bookstall and charity team also collected carloads of clothing and toys for the center. The SSA KL is now providing nutritious snacks to the Kindergarten at the SSC. (For more details, please see “SSA in Action”.)

Thank you for your donations, SSA KL!

Your Charity Team,

Karine, Sneha, Anu, Noor and Laura

At our Mother’s Day Coffee, we had guests from the Sahabat Support Center. The Sahabat Support Centre (SSC) provides educational programs for refugees (adults, teenagers and children), a kindergarten, supervised home schooling, a resource center, vocational training, and family health care program, among others with the goal of improving their situation.

The SSC brought handicrafts to sell at our coffee. They were made by refugee women to help them make money for their families. The proceeds of each sale go to the woman who made the item. Many of our SSA members went home with some great handmade items that helped women provide for their families!

We had a guest speaker from SSC, Yolanda Lopez, explain to us what refugees have to go through to obtain asylum: it is a process that can take years. Meanwhile, refugees do not have access to government schools, which could mean long gaps in a child’s education. The SSC provides a schooling program at the center. The refugees also do not have affordable healthcare, so the center’s volunteer doctors play a major part in keeping the refugee community healthy.

Many of us were very discouraged to hear that malnutrition is affecting the refugee families and in particular, the children need more protein to stay healthy. To that end, the SSA KL is providing a healthy snack twice a week to the children of the kindergarten at the Sahabat Support Centre. This will help ensure good nutrition for the younger children, and assist the parents in providing healthy food for their children while at school.

SSA KL was able to provide this food support through the SSA Charity Team. They collected over RM 1400

at our Mother’s Day Coffee Morning through raffle tickets and our used bookstall. Most importantly, our guest speaker raised awareness of refugees. Our SSA members have already rose to the challenge: some sponsored a child’s education at the center for a year, or volunteered to teach at the school or gathered up their used clothes and toys for the Charity Team to bring to the SSC. It is this kind of continuing support, long after the raffle tickets are sold, that is so beneficial to helping the needy in our temporary home, Malaysia.

Thank you, SSA!

How Can I help?

We are collecting the following items at our coffee mornings. Just leave with a member of the Charity Team, and they will take care of the rest!

Donate a raffle prize—donated prizes ensure our entire raffle monies go to the needy. If you find an interesting gift from your country or your travels, it would make a great prize for someone while helping to raise money for an SSA supported charity.

Donate used books—the SSA Book Shoppe needs more books, for children and adults!

Collect travel-sized toiletries from hotels and airlines—these will be collected and put into gift bags for the needy.

If you would like to help out the Sahabat Support Centre, get more

information at

Simple ways to live a

healthy lifestyle

You hear a lot about living a

healthy lifestyle, but what does

that mean? In general, a

healthy person doesn't smoke,

is at a healthy weight, eats

healthy and exercises. Sounds

simple, doesn't it? The trick to

healthy living is making small

changes...taking more steps,

adding fruit to your cereal,

having an extra glass of

water...these are just a few ways

you can start living healthy

without drastic changes.

Exercise.

One of the biggest problems in

the world today is lack of

activity. We know it's good for

us but avoid it like the plague

either because we're used to

being sedentary, every time we

tried to do some exercise the

next morning is impossible to

walk or maybe we are afraid

that exercise has to be vigorous

to be worth our time. The truth

is, movement is movement and

the more you do, the healthier

you'll be. Even moderate

activities like chores, gardening

and walking can make a

difference.

Just adding a little movement

to your life can:

Reduce the risk of heart

disease, stroke and

diabetes

Improve joint stability

Increase and improve

range of movement

Help maintain flexibility

as you age

Maintain bone mass

Prevent osteoporosis and

fractures

Improve mood and

reduce symptoms of

anxiety and depression

Enhance self esteem

Improve memory in

elderly people

Reduce stress

So, even if you opt for small

changes and a more modest

weight loss, you can see the

benefits are still pretty good.

One study has found that just a

10% weight reduction helped

obese patients reduce blood

pressure, cholesterol and

increase longevity.

Simple Ways to Move Your

Body

You can start the process of

weight loss now by adding a

little more activity to your life.

If you're not ready for a

structured program, start small.

Every little bit counts and it all

adds up to burning more

calories.

Turn off the TV. Once a

week, turn off the TV and

do something a little

more physical with your

family. Play games, take a

walk...almost anything

will be more active than

sitting on the couch.

Walk more. Look for

small ways to walk more.

When you get the mail,

take a walk around the

block, take the dog for an

extra outing each day or

walk on your treadmill for

5 minutes before getting

ready for work.

Do some chores.

Working in the garden,

raking leaves, sweeping

the floor...these kinds of

activities may not be

'vigorous' exercise, but

they can keep you

moving while getting

your house in order.

Pace while you talk.

When you're on the

phone, pace around or

even do some cleaning

while gabbing. This is a

great way to stay moving

while doing something

you enjoy.

Be aware. Make a list of all the

physical activities you do on a

typical day. If you find that the

bulk of your time is spent

sitting, make another list of all

the ways you could move

more--getting up each hour to

stretch or walk, walk the stairs

at work, etc.

Eating Well

Eating a healthy diet is another

part of the healthy lifestyle. Not

only can a clean diet help with

weight management, it can

also improve your health and

quality of life as you get older.

If you're looking for smaller

changes, you can use these tips

for simple ways to change how

you eat:

Eat more fruit. Add it to

your cereal, your salads

or even your dinners

Sneak in more veggies.

Add them wherever you

can--a tomato on your

sandwich, peppers on

your pizza, or extra

veggies in your pasta

sauce. Keep pre-cut or

canned/frozen veggies

ready for quick snacks.

Switch your salad

dressing. If you eat full-

fat dressing, switch to

something lighter and

you'll automatically eat

less calories.

Eat low-fat or fat-free

dairy. Switching to skim

milk or fat free yogurt is

another simple way to

eat fewer calories

without having to

change too much in

your diet.

Make some substitutes.

Look through your

cabinets or fridge and

pick 3 foods you eat

every day. Write down

the nutritional content

and, the next time you're

at the store, find lower-

calorie substitutes for

just those 3 items..

Creating a healthy lifestyle

doesn't have to mean drastic

changes. In fact, drastic

changes almost always lead to

failure. Making small changes

in how you live each day can

lead to big rewards, so figure

out what you can to be healthy

today.

HSE MEETINGS KLCC AND MONT KIARA

As you know, there have been security incidents all around Kuala Lumpur, some of them involving SSA members or friends.

HSE meetings were organized in order to prevent this kind of incidents or in the worst case, to avoid injuries. We all know that material things are not that important as health.

Bala, from SLB office, helped us with the meeting; he gave us some tips to avoid snatching or burglary. Also he showed some videos about how fast the things could happen sometimes.

Many spouses are working and they couldn’t attend the meeting, which is why I send some useful

information to all the members. If you have any doubts about that information please let me know.

I would like to thank all the ladies who attended the meetings, I hope none of us have to be involved in this kind of situations, but as always, please follow your common sense and be safe.

Also, I would like to thank the Activities Team for the support.

\The April coffee morning saw Marie Thielens warmly welcome SSA members into her home. Sandrina Vrignaud and Tania Melhem joined her in organizing a wonderful morning. With delicious homemade quiche, scrumptious chocolate brownies, divine cupcakes and a huge spread of fresh fruit, zestful dips and freshly baked bread....the SSA members enjoyed every bite at the coffee morning.

We began the morning with Melanie Thompson from the Hospitality team, introducing new SSA members who were attending their very first coffee morning in the KL chapter. A huge welcome to Likensto Shuping, Casey Okabayashi, Hanane Benahmed and Nurga Amir. We wish them a wonderful stay in Kuala Lumpur. We also welcomed Julien Hoffman, Hospitality coordinator for the SSA male spouses. We moved on to give a farewell to Zahra Ahmed, our SSA member for the last 31 years. Zahra shared with us her moments with the SSA chapters all over the world and we must say ... it was enlightening and

encouraging to hear her absolute positivity and see her warm smile. SSA KL wishes Zahra “All the very best “in her future endeavours.

Florence Lambert Lee, our guest speaker for the day, is the creator of the GADIS MANIS store. The store products are gifts, souvenirs and accessories which reflect Malaysia's culture. Gadis Manis supports local Craftsmanship and all the products are made in Malaysia. We saw on display some of the products ... and they are beautifully crafted and reflect Malaysia's rich heritage. Ladies, do check out their website www.gadismanismalaysia.com/ and their products at the stores.

Laura Miller, our charity coordinator worked hard at putting up a sale of used books which was well supported by the SSA members. 100% of the proceeds go towards the charities supported by the SSA. With the start of a new tradition of celebrating birthdays at the coffee mornings ... we cheerfully wished Raquel Izquierdo, Randi Nesset,

Sandrina Vrignaud, Dee Brink and Melanie Thompson a marvelous birthday.

Amid smiles, new faces, old friends and delicious food ... the April coffee morning ended ... with a huge "Thank you” going to Marie, Sandrina and Tania for a fabulous morning. Warm regards,

Mita Hussain KL Welcome and

May 2013 Hospitality

Coffee Morning

Our May Hospitality coffee morning was held at the Royale Chulan Hotel on the 14th May. This is a beautiful hotel in the centre of KL with a fusion of traditional and comtemporary architectural styles. Every corner of the hotel showcases a vivid parade of Malaysia’s historical past as well as its thriving present and future. We thought this would be the perfect venue to host our Mother’s Day celebratons as well as welcoming our new members to this vibrant KL Chapter.

As our members arrived they were warmly greated by our Hospitality Team and to commemorate mothers around the world each member was given a beautiful Mother’s Day gift. Once inside we enjoyed the delicious selection of scones, finger sandwiches, miniature cakes and pastries, along with tea, coffee and juice.

Anjana opened the morning by inviting the spouses who were celebrating their May birthday’s to join her and cut the delicious cake that she had brought along. Our guest speaker for the morning was Yolanda from Sahabat Support Centre. Laura, our Charity Coordinator will explain in more detail in this Newsletter about the wonderful work that Yolanda carries out with the Sahabat refugees.

As our coffee morning came to a close Laura held a raffle with 100% of the proceeds going to her charitable causes. Some of the lucky winners of these lovely prizes were Laurie Donald, Casey Okabayashi, Hana Hendrawan, Niniek Wijaya, Karine Schipper and Gwen Pasang. The lucky winners of our door prizes this month were Mitra Gholami, Zhansulu Abisheva, Marie-Laure Barbier and Anu Biju.

SSA Sushi Class

On April 25th, we got together at Mid

Valley Mall to learn the wonderful

Japanese Cuisine “Sushi”. We were a

group of 30 members. It was

amazing to see how everyone was so

focus in the instructions and recipes,

for most of us this was the first time

cooking sushi and we were surprised

by the difficulty to master this

technique. We learned to cook the

rice for the sushi: 1 kg of raw sushi

rice (Kome-chan) and cook it with 1.2

liters of water, after cooked add 200

ml of rice vinegar and mix until it is

cool down.

Also we practiced to do:

- Nigiri: 2 types of Nigiri

were taught: Inari Nigiri:

a pouch of fried

tofu typically filled with

sushi rice alone; and

Kanikama Nigiri: with is a

ball of sushi rice topped

with a Crabstick

(“Kanikama”) tied with a

piece of nori of seaweed.

Gunkan: In order to hold soft

toppings in place, a thin piece

of Nori is wrapped around a

ball of rice. We did Gunkan

with tuna mayo and egg ayo.

-

- Temaki: hand rolls were

made by placing

ingredients on a seaweed

sheet and then shaping it

into a cone.

As Additional, we learned the Maki:

- Which is a cylindrical

piece, formed with the

help of a bamboo mat, for

this type of sushi we

discover the California

Roll, Kanikama Maki and

Kappa Maki (cucumber).

We finished this gourmet activity with

a nice Bento lunch in the restaurant.

Thanks for coming and helping us to

have a different morning… It was

very Mmmmmmm!!!!!
