Your Body Double: Draping for Fit and Fashion Joe Vecchiarelli with Nick Coman Flat patterns are necessary, but not necessarily the best starting point for accurate fitting and designing for your three-dimensional figure. Join expert fitters and designers Joe Vecchiarelli and Nick Coman, in this multi-day draping experience, as you work on your own dress form. You’ll learn more than you can imagine, as you pad your form (creating your ‘body double’), create your own sloper on the form (your fitting block) and move on to the creation of garment designs in knit fabrics. Begin with padding your dress form to accurately represent your own shape, in preparation for draping your first bodice on the form. Your body measurements, Joe’s demonstration and both his and Nick’s assistance throughout the morning make this a priceless opportunity to create a dress form that truly fits you. Once completed, your dress form will become the base upon which your bodice sloper is draped. Learn the basics of draping as you create, in fabric, what will become your pattern fitting block. By the end of the day you will have: ● Created your ‘body double’ on a dress form; ● Draped your basic princess-style bodice on the dress form; ● Converted the draped bodice into a flat pattern: ● Learned to compare and contrast your personal sloper with a paper pattern, and explored how to use the information for fit and design purposes; ● As time permits, you’ll learn to change princess lines to darts for both knits and wovens. You’ll take home: ● A record of your exact body measurements; ● A collection of fitting/draping/drafting equipment,

including a 2” x 18” grid ruler, industrial tracing wheel (not the wimpy home version), metal 24” Curve Vary Form ruler, soft lead Berol pencil, #17 French Curve ruler, #24 straight pins for draping; ● Muslin for draping and bodice fitting; ● Your padded ‘body double’ for use in your own sewing studio. Day two is where things get really creative, when you start draping fashion garments on your form. Your jam-packed day, spent with Joe and Nick, is fulfilling enough all on its own … but you’ll also gather ideas from what’s going on around you (think Project Runway workroom). This day is all about knit fashions -- tops, in particular. We love to wear them, we should be draping with and designing for them, too! You’ll be working with good quality European knits as you to create your first top (which of course will fit perfectly) in the morning. Make a second style top in the afternoon -- maybe a tunic or dress. Bring sketches, photos or RTW garments as your inspiration -- thinking about the clothes you’d love to make and which will fit you automatically because they've been draped on .... well, you! Maybe you want to take a detail or feature from one photo and add it to the shape of another -- or take the silhouette of one garment and change it to be more flattering to your own figure -- exaggerate it a little more in one place, and make it a little more body conscious in another. Lengths and the addition of design details…. these are the things you can really work out while draping on your own form, with professional advice available all day long. What could be more fun?! Nick’s do’ and ‘don’t’ guidelines will help you get started on the right foot (and not stray) as you’re learning, and both his and Joe’s years of experience and great design sense will help you create flattering and wearable designs. Working right on your body double lets you see clearly and analyze proportion and style for YOUR body shape. In the end, you’ll be able to convert your draped designs to flat patterns, all ready to cut from new fabric, sew, and wear. And …. they’ll fit YOU! Sessions: 15 Materials: $89.00 Hands-on Code: MDB200X, MDB260X, MDB300X, MDB360X The Essential Weekender Duffel (BYOF) Katie Bartz In the Husqvarna Viking Studio sponsored by Suddenly Sewing This is one of the best projects ever, for making, learning, using….and bragging about. The expandable, quilted duffel is just the right size and shape to carry all your essentials for that weekend get-away, or use as your carry-on for a longer journey by air. It’s simply awesome!

Page 3: June 7, 8 & 9, 2018 Arlington, TX sewingexpo.com 800-699 … · Your Body Double: Draping for Fit and Fashion Joe Vecchiarelli with Nick Coman ... This is not about making a sloper

Secured with the same zippers and hardware found on high-end luggage, the duffel is easily customized with your choice of fabric (quilting cotton) for him or her. The removable, adjustable carrying strap and comfort grip handle make it easy to transport all your goodies in style. Adopt the easiest workroom methods for installing zippers, learn to quilt your projects just the way you like, topstitch with precision, and create gusseted, zippered cargo pockets with confidence. The best part of the course is Katie herself – her reputation for exquisitely designed projects that help us travel, organize and ‘keep it all together’ shines brightly with this project, and her clear, logical teaching style makes it all so much fun to make for yourself. You’ll also start using many of her methods on your other projects, too. From the most basic (and valuable) advice about stitching accurate seams and quilting to installing two-way zippers and creating exquisite top and edge-stitching detail, Katie’s quiet confidence and expert advice is contagious. Every stage of construction is straightforward and simple, as she shares how to use her favorite notions, machine accessory feet, pressing techniques and more. Everything is covered, too, from cutting your first pieces to zipping up your completed bag. Katie’s time-tested, proven techniques will help you take your project from home-made to pro-made in no time! Finishes to approximately 21” x 6” x 14”, with a hard bottom, metal feet, multiple pockets, zippers, adjustable shoulder strap, comfort-grip handles and more. Perfection! Optional Open Sew on Tuesday evening for this workshop. Bring your own fabric, see supply list for details.

Fit, Fashion and Fun Day Judy Kessinger This is the day Judy shares something exciting with her sewing friends. Known as The Fit Doctor, Judy will spend the day administering to you -- dosing you with a new enthusiasm for sewing clothes you’ll love to wear, as she diagnoses and treats the causes of your diminished enthusiasm about sewing for yourself: fit (or lack thereof). This is not about making a sloper for precision tailoring -- this is a day dedicated to easy fit and how to create and design the kind of clothes we wear every day. Beginning with a discussion of issues most of us face when fitting tops and pants, and an exploration about ways to solve them, Judy includes a trunk show of examples -- tops and pants which reveal her simple, easy approach, and plant the seeds of confidence and inspiration. Plus plenty of time for Q & A. Perhaps the most important part of the day is when Judy measures each student. She draws the solution(s) on a miniature pattern, simple to recreate on your own patterns at home. Fitting issues are discovered, discussed and solved -- right then and there! While others are being measured, you might want to observe and learn about all kinds of fitting solutions. Or you might peruse Judy’s garment collection, even try them on (there will be a full-length mirror available) and even, if you bring your camera, take pictures of your favorite styles and colors. End the day with creative design tricks and a quick look at how Judy’s basic patterns can be transformed into a wardrobe of wearable, comfortable and attractive clothes. Sessions: 6 Code: MDB301X, MDB361X

Perfecting YOU: Color, Style and Proportion Cynthia Guffey Discover how to create your own personal drama in this “it-really-is-all-about-me-this-time” day with Cynthia. What does this have to do with fashion sewing? Everything! Her unique and exceptionally effective, useful and mistake-inhibiting look at how we use color when choosing fabrics is the first step on the way to creating clothes you simply love to wear. Take home a collection of fabric swatches representing your best neutrals (you’ll be surprised by at least one of these), and explore how to use them in combination with other colors for your very best, most flattering looks. Transition into a discussion of the print shapes and sizes, as you learn the truth of Cynthia’s caveat: “If a piece of fabric calls your name, the safest bet is not to answer!” The shift in your thinking will be well underway by mid-day, and you’ll feel totally empowered to make great fabric choices on your own. As Cynthia’s consultations and discussions progress, you’ll of course arrive at styles for flattering garment lengths and circumferences -- the “longitudes and latitudes” that suit your body best. Learn to change your silhouette by re-thinking the urge to ‘cover up’ and instead, learn to make gentler transitions, add or subtract visual volume and more. At the end of the day, you’ll know if a choice you want to make is a good one, whether it’s about fabric color, print or scale … and how to combine those choices with patterns in the correct proportions for you. When each piece you make really, truly works for you, the entire group of separates works together to form almost unlimited looks. Bring a tape measure and, most importantly, 2 – 3 of your favorite garments -- the ones you wear all the time and feel great in, plus one you thought you’d love -- but just don’t. Discussion about these pieces will help everyone in class understand and remember each lesson on the way to the goal: to create the garments that you simply love to wear. You'll leave class armed with four new patterns of your choice (your shopping spree!), the knowledge necessary to create a flattering silhouette and a collection of swatches to help you build the core of your wardrobe upon your best neutrals -- in short, ready to go home and get started making clothes you'll love to wear because they will flatter YOU. Sessions: 7 Materials: $59.00 Hands-on Code: MDB302X, MDB362X

By design, the back panel is a perfect opportunity for you to showcase a treasured textile, a bit of hand or machine embroidery or a special focal- point fabric. As the jackets in class come together, you’ll discover why this style is so very wearable, and flatters every body type and shape --especially when you use a soft, drapey rayon. You will also discuss and explore how to create multiple garments and styles from a single pattern, each one unique, an artful, versatile, stand-alone wardrobe favorite. Begin the day with a little trunk show as you plan your garment and complete your personal cutting chart. Then you’ll dig right into creative serging! Learn to balance your stitch for flatlocking with Pearl Crown Rayon, how to create the perfect rolled edge with Sulky rayon -- including a fun tassel embellishment -- and more. Thursday 9:00 AM The Art of Fashion Camouflage Judy Kessinger The definition of camouflage is to disguise or conceal. Tim Gunn says “I have my mantra about silhouette, proportion, and fit. I believe that when they are in harmony and balance, you’ll look great in anything. It’s not about a particular item of clothing or particular accessory: it’s about the whole head–to-toe look!” We agree. So, instead of just talking about figure shape (not the answer), explore and examine the easiest ways to achieve the “best of you” look. Sessions: 1 Thursday 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM Code: A 3 Achieving Perfectly Fitting Pants-A Lesson in Three Parts: Part I Cynthia Guffey A perfectly fitted pants pattern can become the most valuable tool in your studio, for once the curves are correctly shaped, the resulting sloper can be used to create any style of pant at all. From conservative business basics to flowing, sheer evening pants, from skinny ankle pants to full, pleated trousers and in any length from the floor to capris to shorts, the designs all start with the same basic fit: the curves from the waistline to mid-thigh.

To achieve proper fit and allow for movement, the curves of the lower body (in three dimensions) have to be accurately translated onto paper (in two dimensions), and evaluated in a precise order and with proper consideration for what each measurement tells us. Explore these measurements and define which part of the pattern each applies to as you gather the knowledge to create your own personal pants sloper. All three parts of the series are necessary, as the measurements cannot work independently of each other. They work as a team, creating a shape on paper that will mimic your own best pants shape for your body. When you sign up for all three parts of this series, go home with your own detailed measurements, a personal sloper pattern, Cynthia's Pants Fitting and Pants Tweaking DVDs and a roll of pattern paper so you can continue to create pants at home. Part I of the three-part series focuses on the major curves: measuring and interpreting back to the paper pattern your crotch length and depth, and your hip curve. Part II moves on to the knee intersection, overall length and waist shape, once again measuring accurately and transferring information back to the paper pattern. Part III completes the process with back waist and hip, then front waist and hip measurements and pattern adjustments. During each part of the series, Cynthia demonstrates

Page 7: June 7, 8 & 9, 2018 Arlington, TX sewingexpo.com 800-699 … · Your Body Double: Draping for Fit and Fashion Joe Vecchiarelli with Nick Coman ... This is not about making a sloper

measuring, then shows where and how the measurement comes into play on the paper pattern. Her guidance continues as you make the adjustments needed for your pattern. As you progress through the series, your best shape will appear on paper, as you learn to translate body measurements to pattern dimensions. You’ll leave with a sloper pattern you can use for basic pants, or as a base to design skinny or flared styles, shaped waistlines, added pleats and so on. Sessions: 3 Materials: $25.00 Hands-on Thursday 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM Code: A 4, B20 Size Matters: Wallhangings, Small Quilts and Minis Jill McCloy Find inspiration and explore a wide range of artful, fun techniques as you take a tour of Jill's many and varied samples. Discover why minuscule changes to a needle’s anatomy create opportunities for improved stitch quality or, conversely, may be working against

you. Threads, too, have a structure which influences how they stitch out. For instance, knowing how to thread your machine using both the straight-wound and cross-wound spools can eliminate breakage or fraying. Explore thread weights and styles, the effects they can create in your embroidery and the relationship between the top and bottom threads. Learn why it’s a great idea to change needle styles throughout a project, how to keep track of all the needles you’re using and how the correct needle paired with the correct thread for your embroidery design can make everything flow smoothly. Thursday 6:30 PM Achieving Perfectly Fitting Pants-A Lesson in Three Parts: Part II Cynthia Guffey A perfectly fitted pants pattern can become the most valuable tool in your studio, for once the curves are correctly shaped, the resulting sloper can be used to create any style of pant at all. From conservative business basics to flowing, sheer evening pants, from skinny ankle pants to full, pleated trousers and in any length from the floor to capris to shorts, the designs all

start with the same basic fit: the curves from the waistline to mid-thigh. When you sign up for all three parts of this series, go home with your own detailed measurements, a personal sloper pattern, Cynthia’s Pants Fitting and Pants Tweaking DVDs and a roll of pattern paper so you can continue to create pants at home. During each part of the series, Cynthia demonstrates measuring, then shows where and how the measurement comes into play on the paper pattern. Achieving Perfectly Fitting Pants-A Lesson in Three Parts: Part III Cynthia Guffey A perfectly fitted pants pattern can become the most valuable tool in your studio, for once the curves are correctly shaped, the resulting sloper can be used to create any style of pant at all. From conservative business basics to flowing, sheer evening pants, from skinny ankle pants to full, pleated trousers and in any length from the floor to capris to shorts, the designs all start with the same basic fit: the curves from the waistline to mid-thigh.

Page 16: June 7, 8 & 9, 2018 Arlington, TX sewingexpo.com 800-699 … · Your Body Double: Draping for Fit and Fashion Joe Vecchiarelli with Nick Coman ... This is not about making a sloper

When you sign up for all three parts of this series, go home with your own detailed measurements, a personal sloper pattern, Cynthia’s Pants Fitting and Pants Tweaking DVDs and a roll of pattern paper so you can continue to create pants at home. During each part of the series, Cynthia demonstrates measuring, then shows where and how the measurement comes into play on the paper pattern. Friday 6:30 PM Core Sewing Skills: Grainline Effects Workshop Cynthia Guffey Everything you do while you are creating a garment is influenced by the grain of the fabric, from laying out your pattern pieces and making your very first stitches, to the last stitch of the hem. With a handful of swatches in hand, cut a variety of pattern shapes and learn how to confidently identify the lengthwise and crosswise grain (and true bias) when the fabric has no selvage for reference. Explore ways to find it at inseams, shoulder seams, necklines, princess seams and more, so you can work with it to best advantage.
