New Deacons Ordained It is a day of joy in our diocese as Bishop Mark ordained Mark Groeger and Michael Pleva as Transi onal Deacons for our diocese. This is another milestone in their forma on journey. Their an cipated ordina on to the priesthood will be in the spring of 2021. Bishop Mark’s homily reminded all that Pope Francis’ prayer inten ons for May were for Dea-cons. In his homily, Bishop Mark said, “Pope Francis asks everyone to pray for permanent deacons, who live their voca-

on in and with their family. He shared Pope Francis’ message that Deacons are not second-level priests. They are part of the clergy and live their voca on in and with their family.

They are dedicated to the service of the poor, who carry within them the face of the suffering Christ. They are the guardians of service in the Church.

Bishop Mark explained that Transi onal Deacons are men that will journey on to priestly ordina on while Permanent Deacons are usually married and therefore are called Permanent Deacons. A deacon is an ordained minister of the Catholic Church. There are three groups, or "orders," of ordained ministers in the Church: bishops, presbyters and deacons. Deacons are ordained as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the world of Christ, who came "to serve and not to be served." The en re Church is called by Christ to serve, and the Deacon, in virtue of his sacramental ordina on and through his various ministries, is to be a servant in a servant-Church.

Bishop Mark assigned Deacon Michael Pleva to our parish for the summer. Please keep him your prayers.
