Readings & Reflections TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Elisha left and followed Elijah as his attendant (1 Kings 19:16b, 19-21). Psalm: You are my inheritance, O Lord (Psalm 16). Second Reading: Beware that you are not consumed by one another (Galatians 5:1, 13-18). Gospel: Go and proclaim the kingdom of God (Luke 9:51-62).

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Gn 18:16-33; Ps 103:1b-4, 8-11; Mt 8:18-22 Tuesday: Gn 19:15-29; Ps 26:2-3, 9-12; Mt 8:23-27 Wednesday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 117:1bc-2; Jn 20:24-29 Thursday: Gn 22:1b-19; Ps 115:1-6, 8-9; Mt 9:1-8; or, for Independence Day, any readings from the Mass “For the Country or a City,” nos. 882-886, or “For Peace and Justice,” nos. 887-891 Friday: Gn 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67; Ps 106:1b-5; Mt 9:9-13 Saturday: Gn 27:1-5, 15-29; Ps 135:1b-6; Mt 9:14-17 Sunday: Is 66:10-14c; Ps 66:1-7, 16, 20; Gal 6:14-18; Lk 10:1-12, 17-20 [10:1-9]

REFLECTION: Radical Transformation. On this Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, the readings describe anything but an ordinary time. They are disturbing and they leave us disturbed. The Old Testament reading recounts a young man’s radical break with the past to follow a new path. The Gospel describes how life as we know it is abruptly changed if we follow the call of Christ. The psalm and Paul assure us that such life-altering change is possible only because of the power of God’s love. We are presented with a stark choice. To love as God loves, we must leave our old lives behind. We must leave behind not just the bad, the selfish, and the evil but the ordinary, our daily work, and the important, our fami-lies, our lives. Loving as God loves requires a radical transformation, not a smooth transition. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

REVEREND GILBERT GENTE JOINS PARTNERED PARISHES OF STS. PAUL & BRUNO Again we are blessed and relieved to have a Parochial Vicar at the Partner Parishes. With the Priest shortage we are grateful for his assignment to help Father Lawrence in our churches. On Monday, July 1, Reverend Gilbert Gente will begin here as Parochial Vicar.

Father Gilbert Gente is from the Diocese of Ipil on the western part of the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. He attended St. John Vianney Theological Seminary in Cagayan de Oro City. Father Gente, age 52, was ordained a priest May 21, 1993.

Father Gente, who has served as a parish priest, seminary rector, Catholic school superintendent and administrator in the Diocese of Ipil, said he wants to learn best pastoral practices during his time in the Diocese of Greensburg so he can apply them to his diocese when he returns home. He arrived in the Diocese of Greensburg in March and since May 2 has served as administrator pro tem of SS. Cyril & Methodius Parish, Fairchance, and St. Hubert Parish, Point Marion. He states, “I want to share what I have learned in my many years as a priest,” he said. “And I want to share my God-given talents with the people here.” Please make Father Gilbert feel welcome as he adjusts to life and his work in the Partner Parishes of St. Paul & St. Bruno!

Mass on July 4th will not be celebrated here at Saint Paul Parish. Instead, Blessed Sacrament Cathedral

will host the Regional Mass at 9:00AM that day. A reception will follow Mass immediately.
