From the Principal
Well how do you convey 15 years at Bellingen High School into a Newsletter? There are so many images, occasions and fantastic people that I cannot possibly list them. I can say that I have had a wonderful life in Bellingen. My family and I are part of the community and I am going nowhere. I should probably qualify that point. I mean I am staying put and will continue with the Bellingen Markets, the Youth Hub, Camp Creative and working my way slowly down the main street having a chat.
I don’t specialise in wise words but three things have dominated my time as a Principal. Sometimes, I have failed my own rules but I know that they are things to live your life by.
Firstly, my first and last school rule is “decency”. If that attribute underpins your life then you are ready for anything. My own children call it Bob’s Church of Decency.
Secondly, don’t judge things you do not understand. I have had a privileged life and haven’t had to experience gut-wrenching things as a day to day proposition. My early teaching days at Mt. Druitt introduced me to a world that exists in every community. I hope that experience helped me to work with students who were not in control of their destiny.
Thirdly, it is all about choices. No one makes you do anything. You choose an option and there is a consequence. You need to take responsibility for your actions and not take your frustrations out on people who simply followed through with actions.
Finally, it is a poignant moment for me but humour has helped or hindered me all my life and I leave you with life as only Monty Python can express it:
“Always look on the bright side of life”. Goodbye Bellingen High School.

Students excel in Premiers Debating Challenge
Year 7 students, Tom Ruming, Maddi Allen, Maddie Cross and Jordan Neville have won the first two rounds of the Premier's Debating Challenge for the region after debating Macksville High School and Dorrigo High in recent weeks. The students are learning valuable skills and enjoying the opportunity to learn from their peers.
The Premier's Debating Challenge was founded in 1998 with the support of the Centenary of Federation, the competition has always emphasised the ability of students to research a particular area. In the first few years, these areas were predominantly Australian history and civics.
Since 2001 topics have covered a wide range of contemporary issues of relevance to junior secondary students. To date topics have included education and the media. Our students are excited by the prospect of debating Nambucca High School who has been formidable opponents in previous debates.

YAG plays a critical role in providing advice to government on cybersafety and the development of cybersafety policy, resources and educational material. Visit www.dbcde.gov.au for more information.

From the TAS Faculty Snack Attack from 8T3
This term, Year 8 has been learning about nutrients and the importance of healthy eating. The assessment task required the students to research and then prepare a healthy snack that would be suitable to be sold in the school canteen. The students came up with some yummy ideas and did a great job cooking their snacks. Well done.

Prac Teacher joins Bellingen High School TAS Faculty
Mr Smith from the University of Newcastle is here to undertake four weeks of prac. So far Mr Smith says he is enjoying himself and thinks Bellingen High has a great culture. Mr Smith is in the Technology Faculty so come on down and say hello.
Archicad Lesson
Our Year 9 Engineering class was joined by Mr Dillon and Mr Smith to undertake a lesson on Archicad. The lesson consisted of techniques to build a simple house so Year 9 could gain experience and continue on to construct their own house on the newly introduced program at the school. Year 9 enjoyed themselves and will continue to gain valuable skills from this program to excel in the engineering study area.
Light Aircraft Excursion
On Wednesday 18th June our Year 12 Engineering students took a trip to the local airport to talk with Rav, a young successful pilot for the Coffs Harbour skydiving company, Coffs Harbour Aero Club.
Rav took the class through the parts of a light air craft and showed a demo of how specific parts of the plane affect the turning, descending and the climbing of an aircraft. The local pilot also talked about his
journey from schooling to his career and inspired the class that they can achieve anything they set their mind to. The boys were unlucky to get in the air with Rav but overall the class had great time and learnt some valuable information.

LOTE News
Halo. The Year 7 students have been busy working on their assessment tasks – Keluarga Saya (My Family).
Creatively and artistically, charts representing family relationships are being created using paper, photos and even leaves from trees. Grandparents (Om and Kakek) have been positioned at the top. Parents (Ayah and Ibu) with Aunts and Uncles (Tante and Om) being placed under the grandparents. Brothers, sisters and cousins (Laki laki, Kakak and Sepupu) are along the bottom row.
Each student has labelled their family tree by introducing family members, with their names and ages. A great way to learn how to introduce family members and demonstrate their knowledge of numbers!
SAVE THE DATE: Monday 16th September – we will have another Year 7 get together where the family trees will be on display!

North Coast Champions
Bellingen High School Open Girls Football team are now the North Coast Champions
after defeating Mullumbimby High School convincingly on Friday,14th June. The girls
had to travel the four hour trip to Mullumbimby leaving early in the morning to get
there in plenty of time for the 12.30pm start. On the trip a phone call had us
change our destination to Brunswick Heads. All the grounds in the area, except this
one, were closed due to wet weather.
Upon arriving at the ground we were surprised to see a very long, very narrow field
with visible water lying in one section. This was only to add another challenge!
The narrow field meant that the usual game plan using width was going to be less
effective. A few trials of hitting the ball into the wet area during warm-up showed
exactly what would happen in the game. The girls were ready to start and showed
from the beginning their passing game was dominant. Some good lead up work saw a
few opportunities being covered by the Mullumbimby keeper who had a busy game.
In the eighth minute a good pass from Jess Marks back to Sam Barker saw Sam in
a bit of space. She gave the keeper no chance and we were 1-0 in front. The
water seemed to be acting as another defender as the girls tried to work around it.
In the 18th minute Jess put a great ball through the defenders for Sam to run on
to and the score was 2-0. The half time score was 2-0, however, the girls knew
Mullumbimby would come out more determined in the second half.
Mullumbimby did come out more determined, however, the Bellingen girls continued
to control midfield and set up a number of other scoring opportunities. At the
other end the long through balls from Mullumbimby caused problems when they
repeatedly hit the water leaving Keeper Shelby in two minds whether to come out of
her box or not. Despite this Shelby showed the quality keeper she is and kept her
goals safe. In the 15th minute of the second half, Jess found herself with time
and slotted a great goal from outside the 18 yard box. The final score was 3-0
and a very happy 16 girls (plus their coach and supporters) found that they are in
the final 16 of the state-wide knockout competition and will be playing Winmalee
High School, from Western Sydney, in two weeks in Bellingen. The date has not
been set however, it will be at some stage during the Quirindi Interschool visit.
This has been a tremendous team effort, with all players doing their job and
working so well with each other.
Back row - Olivia Cooke, Amelia Brewin, Jess Marks, Stella Robinson, Jemara Imrie, Emilie Nohr, Liz Hoy (Coach) Second row - Cassie Windows, Brie Thomas, Sam Barker, Hannah Rees, Alex Jandzio-Fry, Millie King, Zali Rees Front row - Shelby Mackenzie, Gita Pastro (absent - Hannah Taylor)
