Change the way you think! Answer on pg. 18—NO PEEKING

1. Shadow asked his secretary to make him a

coffee. While the secretary was making the coffee, her clip-on earing fell into the cup. Even though the cup had coffee in it, the earing didn’t bet wet. How is this possible?

2. Dee Septor, the famous magician, said he could put a bottle in the center of a room and crawl into it. How?

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month. Alzheimer’s

disease affects 47 million people worldwide and 5 million Americans. Age is the greatest risk factor for developing the disease and 2/3 of American’s with Alzheimer’s are women. The epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease is growing significantly. Every 67 seconds someone in the United States develops dementia.

Mild forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. If you have trouble remembering someone’s

name but it comes to you later, that’s not a serious memory problem. However, if memory problems are seriously affecting your daily life, they could be early signs of Alzheimer's.

Mental decline as you age appears to be largely due to altered connections among brain cells. But research has found that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections. You could even generate new brain cells. ANTIQUE APPRAISALS at the Manitowoc Senior Center

Open to the public! Wednesday, June 8th at 1pm

Are you having a rummage sale this summer or have a big selection of old, antique items? Before you put a price

them, come see Kathy Link, Antique Appraiser.

She will appraise the value of your items so that you can get the price you deserve for those items.

Do you have a collection of items that you would like to sell? Kathy can help you find a buyer.

Don’t sell your items for next to nothing or give them away before knowing what their value is. Come see Kathy at the

Manitowoc Senior Center every 2nd Wednesday of each month at 1pm on a first come first serve basis.

$1 per item appraised is asked. All money received will be donated to the Manitowoc Senior Center.

Call 686-3060 to let us know if you will be attending.

Do you have a fun, unique or unusual collection that

you would like to share with Senior Center Members? If so, stop at the office and let us know and we can arrange

to display it in our locked curio cabinet for a length of time. Currently on display is

an extensive Pinocchio collection of one of our

members.

Start a new career Do you think that just because you’re an aarpie you cant start a new career? Wrong! Give this idea some serious thought. Many

people over 50 have restructured their lives because they wanted changes. You have behind you, the experience of several decades, and nothing is more valuable than that—NOTHING...except the determination to make the upcoming year the best and most fulfilling of all. This may involve schooling, retraining, relocating.. whatever. But that’s okay because it’s a new beginning and the opportunities are endless. After all, can’t “over the hill” be a very favorable position in life? Can’t that mean you’re now able to coast a little (but just a little—don’t get complacent)? Expand on what you have always wanted to do, but never had the chance. Do your homework; discover what’s available… and then, from what’s available to you, discover what’s valuable for you.

Enjoy “50 Reasons to get out of bed in the morning”, a fun little book created by the staff of Silver Lake College in the 1980’s.

Even if starting a new career is a bit extreme, you can always use your prior job experience and VOLUNTEER! The Senior Center has many different volunteer opportunities available!

Immediate volunteer needs are for helpers for our Treasure Sale & Holiday Fair!

FEEL GOOD! Volunteer with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program! Help people and give your mind a workout too!

We are happy to announce the return of the AARP Manitowoc County Tax-Aide Program to the Manitowoc Senior Center for the 2017 Tax Season! However, we NEED your HELP! We are looking for Volunteers to help out this coming tax season: We could use two greeters and one or more preparers!

Are you good with numbers? Become a Tax Preparer! You'll work with taxpayers directly; filling out tax returns and helping them seek a refund. Experience isn't necessary — AARP will train you on the latest tax preparation forms and software. What does this mean for you? It would mean a commitment of six days of train-ing plus Friday mornings during the tax season (Feb – April 15). Training for new tax pre-parers is held in Green Bay and will consist of two days each in the months of Nov., Dec., & Jan. AARP does reimburse for mileage. Preparers would be trained and become IRS-Certified to prepare simple State and Federal returns as well as Homestead Credit Claims.

Love working with People? Become a Greeter! You'll welcome taxpayers, help organize their paperwork, manage the overall flow of service. Training for greeters includes reading a booklet and taking a simple five question test. The duties of a greeter includes; checking paperwork prior to appointments to insure that they have all documents needed. Does this sound interesting to you? Do you have time to give? It’s important to know, experience is NOT necessary! We will train and mentor you!

When you become a volunteer of AARP Tax-Aide, your expertise will be appreciated more than you could ever imagine! Get the joy and satisfaction of helping out by becoming a AARP Tax-Aide Volunteer TODAY!

If you are interested, please contact the Manitowoc Senior Center at 686-3060 and let us know! We will forward your information to our Tax-Aide representatives who will help you get started!

We are unable to store items (personal or otherwise) behind the desk for anyone, for any reason. We cannot be held responsible for items left here. Please arrange for appropriate storage/exchange of any items prior to bringing them into the facility. As a reminder, that although we do accept magazines 6 months and newer, please bring them only during operating hours (Mon-Fri, 8a-4p). Do not leave items outside of the doors on weekends, as they pose a trip hazard to individuals and can get damaged due to the weather.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

EXERCISE OF THE MONTH: STEP UPS (Source: whyiexercise.com)

Benefits: The step up is a functional unilateral leg exercise, which means

that you train each leg independently. It improves symmetry and balance.

Step-ups primarily work your quadriceps, the muscles in the front of your

thighs, and involve both your knee and hip joints. However, other muscles

involved include your glutes, calves and hamstrings, which assist in the

movement. Even your lower back and abs muscles get involved, as they act as stabilizers to help you main-

tain proper posture as you execute the movement. How to do it: Begin by standing in front of a step or

set of stairs with a hand rail. While holding onto the rail, a cane or a partner’s hand, step up with your

right foot, leaning forward slightly and pressing your weight through the heel rather than the toes, raise up

to stand fully upright, bringing your left foot up next to your right. Pause, then leaning slightly forward

again, lower slowly and under control with the left foot to return to the starting position. Repeat. Work up

to 10x on each side. Pointers: Watch that your knee doesn't drift to the inside of your ankle during the ex-

ercise. Don’t let momentum or your back leg do the work. If you can, let the left foot dangle for a second

or two before placing it on the step next to your right foot. This allows your right leg to use more muscula-

ture and also work on your balance. Variation: You can also practice this same movement from a seated

position. Sitting in a stable chair, using a table, cane, walker or partner for support, scoot to the edge of

your chair, position your foot under your knee, creating a 90 degree bend in your knee, pushing through

your heel, try to stand up using one leg rather than two. Slowly lower to seating and repeat.

*As always, remember to always talk with your doctor before starting any exercise program or a new exercise .

22 Ingredients 1 & 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1 & 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/8 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 3 tablespoons Greek yogurt 1 cup sugar 1 large egg 1/2 cup milk 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/3 cup chocolate chips plus more for sprinkling on top 1 pound strawberries, hulled & halved

Directions 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottom of a 9 inch spring-form

pan with parchment paper. Grease the side of the spring-form pan with butter or cooking spray. 2. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together into a medium bowl. 3. In a separate large bowl, combine butter, Greek yogurt, and sugar and using an electric mixer,

beat on medium-high speed until light and fluffy– no more than 2 minutes. 4. Reduce speed to medium, mix in the egg, beat until light and fluffy. Then add milk and vanilla. 5. Keeping the mixer speed low, add in the flour mixture, gradually, just until combined. Do not

over-mix. 6. Fold chocolate chips into the batter. Transfer batter to spring-form pan. Arrange strawberries on

top of the cake, cut sides down and close together. Place chocolate chips in spaces in between. 7. Bake cake for about 1 hour until the top is golden brown and the tester comes out clean. In the

last 5-10 minutes of baking, you can take the cake out of the oven and sprinkle some more chocolate chips on top, pressing them lightly into the top of the cake. Return to the oven for 5-10 more minutes, to allow chocolate to melt a bit.

8. When the cake is done baking, let it cool (still in the baking pan) on a wire rack. After cake has cooled for about 40 minutes, release the cake from the spring-form pan. At this point, if the cake is cool enough, you can slide your hand under the cake, between the parchment paper and the bottom portion of the spring-form pan and move the cake with the parchment paper attached to its bottom onto a cake plate easily.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What an exciting tea! Queen Kathy told us about the Red Hatters meeting the SS Badger. We had 12 Red Hatters there and we greeted the passengers as they came off the boat. This brought a lot of smiles to the faces and a lot of requests to take our picture. We had our picture taken with Mayor Nickels and he said we are his favorite group of ladies, (well, of course). Then we were invited into the press tent to hear the speeches and learn about how the SS Badger became a Historic Landmark. Shirley Oswald did a great job organizing this. Thanks Shirley.

The next exciting thing is the recognition of three ladies that have contributed enormously to the Red Hatters. Betty Hienzen for leading the singers for 10 or 11 years, picking out the songs to sing and rewriting some of them. Shirley Oswald for her work with the tea inventory, the rummage sales, organizing the Badger greeting and her MC’ing the singing programs and last , but not least, Berdeva Fischer for being our Queen for six years. These ladies were made honorary members, which means they are members for life and they don’t have to pay dues. Congratulations ladies. Ann Smaglik wrote the poems and designed the certificate for Berdeva. Thanks Ann, you did a great job.

We would like to welcome three new members, Paula Bertschy, Ann Luckow and Christine Mayer. It is great to have you join our group.

I did not forget our hostesses for May, they were Bev Gilbertson, Darlene Tech and Dorothy Baker. They had a light and delicious snack with the most delicious pickles. The May birthdays were Shirley Funk and Sharon Bruckschen. The hostesses for June are Joy Krejcarek, Evie Schneider and Barb Ahrens. We will have to redo the hostesses list because of members resigning and new members joining. We also have to come up with a plan to use the money in the treasury.

The recipe for those delicious pickles that Bev made is as follows. 1 qt kosher dill pickles, drain the juice. Boil 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar. Pour over the pickles and let set for 24 hours. Enjoy. Boy, they were really good.

Funny bone tickler : The burial service for an elderly Red Hatter climaxed with a massive clap of thunder, followed by a bolt of lightening, accompanied by even more thunder. “Well,” said her husband to the shaken pastor when it ended, “she’s there.”

Have a great Red Hat Day,

Terry

When feisty medical student Gabby Holland moves in next door to perennial ladies’ man Travis Shaw, they embark on a surprising romantic journey neither imagined possible. Travis has always believed a serious relationship would cramp his easygoing lifestyle, while Gabby is preparing to settle down with her long-term boyfriend—until an irresistible attraction between the unlikely couple upends both of their well-planned lives. Spanning a decade and tracing the evolution of a love affair that is ultimately tested by life's most defining events, culminating with the question that every couple must ask themselves: how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?
