The Manitowoc Senior Center is proposing implementation of One Day and One Week Guest Passes, which would be available to anyone who wishes to utilize the facility and does not have a membership with us. As a valued member of the Center, we ask that you provide us with your thoughts/feedback on this idea. If these passes are approved, members will no longer be able to bring a nonmember to participate in members only activities (bingo, cards, exercise programs, etc.), as they would have to purchase a membership pass.

These short-term passes would include most membership participation benefits including: yoga, bingo, Senior Shape Up (additional charge), monthly movie, etc. Activities not included with guest passes would be Vivian’s TARR, Tai Chi, or special pricing for parties or trips.

Please turn in completed surveys at the front desk or complete it online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZM8YQMV. When completing the survey, we ask that you provide your contact information. This information will only be used by Senior Center staff, in order to validate your responses. Thank you for your input!

More than one third of adults 65 or over fall each year. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of injury, hospital admissions for trauma and death. Additionally, Manitowoc County ranks highest in the number of fall-related deaths in the state. This is a very scary statistic.

Stepping On is a program that offers older adults a way of reducing falls by incorporating and discussing a range of issues that include falls and risks, strength and balance exercises, initiating a medication review, vision exams, home safety, safe footwear and what to do and how to cope after a fall. The program is research-based and scientifically proven to reduce falls by over 30% among participants. The Stepping On course consists of seven weekly classes that are each approximately two-hours in length. There is a $10 fee to offset the cost of materials, but the class itself, is free and open to anyone. It is especially beneficial to those 60 or older, those who have had a fall or have a fear of falling, or living in their own home. For more information or to register, please call the ADRC of the Lakeshore at 1-877-416-7083.

Next classes will be held on Wednesdays, March 2-April 13, 10a-12noon, at the Manitowoc Senior Center.

Tai Chi is often referred to “meditation in

motion”. This low-impact, slow motion exercise involves movements that are usually circular and never forced, the muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched. Tai Chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit to people confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery. Although Tai Chi is slow and gentle and doesn’t leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness — muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and, to a lesser degree, aerobic conditioning.

NEW Beginner Tai Chi classes will meet every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at 2:55pm beginning Tue., April 5th.

19 The Nutrition Exchange by Stephanie Stenzel, Dietetic Intern

Dear Stephanie,

My daughter recently purchased me a CoQ10 supplement that she said I should

take. Is it okay for me to take it and why is it so good?

Sincerely, CoQ10 Confusion

Dear CoQ10 Confusion, Though you may not know it, your question is very appropriate for this edition of Nutrition Exchange. February is American Heart Month!

CoQ10, also known as Coenzyme Q10, is known for its potential to improve our heart health. This compound is made by our body to help our cells function properly and make energy. CoQ10 is also one of the antioxidants produced by the body. Antioxidants function to prevent cell damage caused by destructive free radicals. These damaging particles damage our cell membranes, DNA, and can even kill our cells. This supplement has been used to treat various ailments such as blood pressure, heart conditions, muscle pain, Alzheimer’s disease, migraines, macular

degeneration, and low energy. However, CoQ10 has not been proven to treat or improve many of these conditions. Though research doesn’t substantiate all of these claims, there is good evidence to support its effectiveness for heart disease and blood pressure. As we age, our risk for developing heart disease grows. Various forms of heart disease are believed to be caused by free radical damage. Because of Coenzyme Q10’s role as an antioxidant, it can help quench the free radicals and prevent further damage to our cells. As with heart disease, CoQ10 functions similarly in regards to blood pressure. Over time, free radical damage of blood vessels and

arteries can affect blood pressure. In conjunction with a healthy diet, CoQ10 works to combat free radical damage and stress on our blood vessels. By doing so, it helps to maintain lower blood pressure levels. Though our body naturally produces CoQ10, we tend to make less of it as we age. Supplementation is definitely an easy way for us to increase our body’s concentration of CoQ10. In addition to supplementation, we can also get amounts of CoQ10 through foods like chicken, low fat dairy, vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish. When taking CoQ10 supplements, there isn’t

a standard as to how much you should take. Typically, 200mg of CoQ10 per day is considered an adequate dose. However, before taking any type of supplement, you should consult your health care provider. CoQ10 and other supplements can interact with your other medications, making them more or less effective and may even worsen side effects. I hope this helps you with your concerns about supplementing with CoQ10!

Exercise of the Month: Wall Push Up

This is a modified version of the push-up. It is easier than a push-up and you don’t need to get down on the floor—but it will help to strengthen your arms, shoulders and chest. …...Here’s how it’s done….

1. Find a wall clear of objects. Facing the wall, stand a little further than arms length away from the wall. Place your hands flat against the wall about shoulder height and shoul-der-width apart.

2. Bend your elbows as you lower your upper body toward the wall in a slow, controlled motion as you count to 4. Keep your feet planted.

3. Pause. Then slowly push yourself back until your arms are straight as you count to 4 again.

MAKE SURE YOU.. Don’t lock your elbows. Your elbows bend back behind you rather than perpendicular/out to the side of your body. Keep hands planted on the wall. Don’t round or arch your back.

Rx: Do 10 push-ups. Rest 1 minute. If you can, repeat a 2nd round. If 10 reps are too much, start out with 5 repetitions.

Arthritis Relief: The results of a 16-wk strength-training program on those with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis showed that it de-creased pain by 43%, increased muscle strength & general physical performance, improved clinical signs & symptoms of the disease & decreased disability. The effective-ness of strength training to ease pain of osteoarthritis was just as potent, if not more, than medica-tions. Similar effects have been seen in those with rheumatoid arthritis as well. That’s great news! Source: CDC

The Lakeshore Red Hatters meet the 2nd Friday of every month at the Senior Center. All ladies are welcome. The hostesses for the January Tea were Diane Cisler, Sharon Bruckschen and Shirley Oswald. They served delicious snacks and desserts. Elma Castro had a January birthday. Bonnie Willems brought a guest, Debbie Wellens. Nice to meet you Debbie.

***February Tea… Please Note Change in Tea Time**** The Hostesses for February are Audrey Behnke, Kathy Fischer and Mary Ann Preston. They are planning a Valentine party which will begin at 12 Noon on Friday, Feb. 12th, as we will be attending the scheduled Movie at the Senior Center at 1pm. They would like everyone to bring either a homemade or a store brought card to exchange. We will have pizza before the 1pm movie and the hostesses will provide desserts. The luncheon will be at the Charcoal Grill on February 25th.

I would like the March Hostesses to look ahead and let me know what they have planned for the Tea program and also where they want to go for lunch. This way I can put it in the Chit Chat and the Red Hatters will be informed. Thank you for your co-operation.

Audrey reported that we have $322 In the kitty and $605 in the treasury. We had a small gathering of Red Hatters for the Jan-uary tea, but the consensus was to start paying out to the hostesses $20 a month to cover the cost of the teas. We also need to come up with ideas to spend down the money in the treasury for the benefit of all of the Lakeshore Red Hatters.

The Historical Society Victorian Tea will be held on Saturday Feb 13th, noon to 3p.m. The program is Helen Keller, imper-sonated by Jessica Michna. Helen Keller is the 1st person to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree, was a world famous speaker and author and had met every President from Grover Cleveland to LBJ. This will be the last tea the Historical Society will sponsor. Therefore, Betty Hienzen would like a large turnout of Red Hatters, dressed in long skirts or dresses, if you have them, and all the glitz and glitter you own. Call Betty at 682-4815, for more information and to let her know you are coming.

On April 21st to the 24th the state Red Hatters are meeting in Wis. Dells for their annual party. The theme this year is “Friendship High Prom”. The cost is $102, which includes 4 delicious meals. The room is extra, but it is based on how many ladies are in one room. Last year my room, which I shared with one other lady cost me $90 for three nights. I went last year with Bonnie Willems and Lori Vaness. It is a fun weekend with classes and vendors to go to. It is also a inexpen-sive relaxing weekend if you want to get away. If you want more information call me at 683-3008 or Bonnie at 336-7865.

Some sad news to report is Dorothy Blasczyk is leaving the Red Hatters. We will miss her. The Funny Bone Tickler will return next month. Have a Great Read Hat Day~ Terry Prigge

Unbroken is the true story of Louis Zamperini (Jack O'Connell), a promising young Olympic runner. As a boy, Louis "Louie" Zamperini is always in trouble, but with the help of his older brother, he turns his life around and channels his energy into running, later qualifying for the 1936 Olympics. When World War II breaks out, Louie enlists in the military. After his plane crashes in the Pacific, he survives an incredible 47 days adrift in a raft, until his capture by the Japanese navy. Sent to a POW camp, Louie becomes the favorite target of a particularly cruel prison commander. His family refused to give up hope that he might return alive, however.
