Firstofall,IamhonoredtobeservingastheCouncil’sPresident-Electthisyear.Iviewthispositionasmorethanjust“waitinginthewings”whilethenewsheriffintown,JoePinto,competentlyleadsourorganizationwithhisownstyle.IlookforwardtoworkingwithJoeandourBoardtomoveforwardNYSCHP’sprioritiesasheseesthem.HavingservedasVicePresidentofPublicPolicyfortwoterms,IhaveafirsthandappreciationforthefrustrationoflegislativeprocessinNewYorkState.Nevertheless,underourPresident’sleadershiptheCouncilwillcontinuetoplayanintegralroleindrivingthechangesnecessarytoimproveourprofessionandpromotethepatient-centeredidealsunderlyingourdiversepracticesashealth-systempharmacists.WhiletheroleofPharmacyTechnicianisnotyetlegitimizedunderNewYorkStatelaw,beassuredwealreadyhaveagameplaninplacetocommencewellbeforethenextlegislativesessionconvenesinAlbanynextJanuary.YourcurrentBoardofDirectorsiscomposedofpractitionersfromacrossNewYorkStatewitheachmemberbringingtheirownprofessionalandpersonalexperiencestotableinleadingthisorganization.AsaformerDirectorofPharmacyatcommunityhospitalandnowasapharmacyfacultymember,myperspectiveispatient-centered,student-focusedandtechnician-involved.Whatwedoisalwaysaboutthepatient.Thestudentsareourfuture.PharmacyTechniciansmustbepartofourorganization.OneofmyfirstfunctionsasPresident-ElectwastoinstalltheincomingofficersfortheWesternNewYorkChapter(WNYSHP)inJune.Asemceeoftheinstallationdinner,Iassistedinthepresentationofthechapterawards.Unfortunately,twoofthosewell-deservedaccoladeswerepresentedposthumouslytothesurvivingfamilymembersofthepharmacistsbeinghonored.Assuch,Iencourageyou(asIdidtheaudience)tonominateyourcolleaguesforawardswhiletheyarealive.Everyoneofushasworkedalongsideoutstandingpharmacypractitionerswhoshouldbeacknowledgedfortheiraccomplishmentsinimprovingourworkplaces,profession,and/orthedeliveryofcareforourpatients.AsChairoftheNYSCHPAwardsCommittee,Ilookforwardtohavingtoreviewastackofnominations.Lastly,youshouldbeawarethattheCouncil’sleadershiphasseriouslyanalyzedtherisksandbenefitsofmaintainingitstraditionalofficestructure.Ourboardtackledthedifficultissuesandaffirmativelymadethedecisiontomoveforwardwithournewmanagementstructure.OuraffiliationwithCapitolHillManagementServiceswillallowourorganizationtofocusontheneedsofourmembersandtorealizethebenefitsoftheeconomiesofscalewhichwereimpossibleforasmallofficeoperation.OurBoardhasfullfaithandconfidenceinourExecutiveDirector,Shaun,Flynn,whowillbeunencumberedtohelpleadustoanewlevel.AsIwouldremindmystudentswhenItaughtPharmacyManagement,takesometimetogetawayfromworkandre-chargeyour“inner”batteriesthissummer!ChristopherJadochPresident-Elect,NYSCHP

AnothersuccessfulNYSCHPAnnualAssemblyisinthebooksandthisonewasdefinitelyonetoremember!Attendees“puttheNYSCHPmissiontomotion”throughouttheAssemblywiththoughtprovokingdialogonhowtobemoreempatheticintheworkplace,waystobettermarkettheprofession,andhowtopracticeatthetopofourlicensesbothclinicallyandoperationally.AttendeeslefttheAssemblyinspiredandwellequippedwithknowledgeandexperiencestosucceedintheirpracticesettings.
The55thAssemblybroughtinover300attendeesconsistingofpharmacypractitionersandtechniciansfromhealth-systems,academiaandindustry.TheContinuingCompetencyCommittee(CCC)providedyetagainover15hoursofgreatCEprogrammingwithtopicsrangingfrommedicalmarijuana,antimicrobialselection,diabetesjeopardyandchallengesmeetingDSCSAandUSP<800>requirementsjusttonameafew.SomemembersparticipatedintheHouseofDelegatesandothersenjoyedthesightsandsoundsofDowntownSaratoga.ThisyeartheAnnualAssemblywasagainthesiteoftheNYSCHPResidencyProgram.Residentsfromacrossthestatepresentedtheirresearchprojectsandstayedtoattendtheothermeetingevents.Thequalityandcaliberoftheprojectswereoutstandinganditwaswonderfultospendtimewithournextgenerationofpharmacyleaders.Thisyear’sAssemblywasalsotheinauguralyearfortheBernardMehlLeadershipAward.Therecipient,Dr.RobertDiGregorio,esteemedpharmacyleaderandmusician,providedmemberswithanawe-inspiringlectureontheintegralparteachmemberofthepharmacydepartmentplaysinordertoachievesuccess.Hecomparedthistotheimportanceofeachmemberofanorchestrainordertoproduceabeautifulsymphony.
NationallyknownforhisTEDxTalk,“NewDisruptersinHealthcare–PatientsandPharmacists”Dr.RajivShahofMyMedsprovidedthemembershipwithaninsightfulkeynotepresentationwhichspurredsomeengagingdialog.Dr.Shahstressedthatpharmacistshaveamarketingproblemandneedtodoabetterjobatpublicizingtheprofessiontothemasses.Heinsistedthatweasaprofessionbeginapetitionencouragingallpharmaciststocometogetherasaunitedvoice.
Thisyear’sCowboyWesternThemePartywasincrediblyfun!Membersenjoyednetworking,line-dancing,havingtheirpicturetakenintheWesternthemedphotobooth,andenjoyedgroupkaraoke.Saturday’sInstallationDinnerprogramwasinspiringaswewatchedcolleaguesreceiveawardsforPharmacistoftheYear,NewPractitioner,andIndustryAffairsAwardtonameafew.Last,butnotleast,nowImmediatePastPresident,StephanieSeyse,passedthegaveltoournewlyinstalledPresident,JosephPinto.Ifyouweren’ttheretohearhisInstallationAddress,itwascertainlyoneforthehistorybooksofNYSCHP.Joeaddressedmembersthatthetimeisnowtoworkcollaborativelytopasslegislationonregisteringtechnicians,obtainingproviderstatus,andensuringourorganizationtaketheleadinmarketingourbelovedprofession.

Dr.KaplanservedastheNewPractitionerMentorforAmericanPharmacistSociety–AcademyofStudentPharmacists(APhA-ASP)forSt.John’sUniversityfrom2011to2016,afterservingasSecretaryofthegroupasastudent.Hehaspreviously
servedastheSecretaryandPresident-ElectoftheLongIslandSocietyofHealth-SystemPharmacists(LISHP),wherehiskeyfocuseswereonrevampingtheLISHPwebsiteandimprovingcommunicationtomembers.ForNewYorkStateCouncil,heservedasanalternatedelegateatthe2016ASHPHouseofDelegates.HeisalsoinvolvedinthePharmacySocietyofWisconsin,NationalLipidAssociation,AmericanCollegeofClinicalPharmacy. Asaboard-certifiedpharmacotherapyspecialistandcertifiedgeriatricpharmacist,Dr.KaplanunderstandstheimportanceofcontinualeducationandcompetencyforpharmacyadvancementandhaspresentedalmosttwodozenACPE-accreditedlectures.HeisalsofrequentlyaskedbythecommunitytospeakontopicssuchasFallsPrevention,Diabetes,andCardiovasculardisease.Heenjoyswinetasting,runningmarathonsandisanordainedMinisterintheUniversalLifeChurch. Dr.JaclynScottwillbeservingastheincomingPresidentfortheRoyalCountieschapter.HerinterestinNYSCHPbeganatSt.John'sUniversity,whereshegraduatedwithherDoctorofPharmacydegreein2013.Fromthere,Dr.ScottcompletedaPGY-1PharmacyResidencyatLongIslandJewishMedicalCenter.Afterresidency,shewentontoworkatanoutpatientHIVclinic/CommunityHealthCenterinManhattanandshecurrentlyworksatMemorialSloanKetteringCancerCenter,mainlyintheirUrgentCareCenter.

Robert DiGregorio is Senior Director ofPharmacotherapy Services at The BrooklynHospital Center (TBHC) anda full Professor atLong Island University’s Arnold & MarieSchwartz Collegeof Pharmacy. He is also the
ResidencyProgramDirectorforboththePGY1andAmbulatoryCarePGY2programsatTBHC.Dr.DiGregorioisa board certified ambulatory care pharmacotherapy specialist (BCACP) and practices in a series ofCollaborative Drug TherapyManagement clinics at The Brooklyn Hospital Center. He has over 26 years ofexperience as a pharmacist, having worked in a variety of settings, including: clinical research, pediatrics,emergencymedicine, disastermanagement, pharmacyadministration, ambulatory care, andacademia. Hehaspublishedinthepharmacy,nursing,andmedicalliterature;includingservingasaneditoroftwoeditionsofatextbook.Hehasbeenaninvitedspeakertohundredsofpresentationsthroughoutthenationandhaspresentednumerousposterandplatformpresentationsatlocal,regional,andnationalconferences. Dr.DiGregorioisanactivememberoftheNewYorkStateCouncilofHealth-systemPharmacists(NYSCHP)atthestateandlocallevel.HeparticipatesinboththeLongIslandandRoyalCountiesChaptersofNYSCHPandwillbestartinghisthirdtermontheBoardofDirectorsofNYSCHPasDirectorofPharmacyPractice.Hehasbeen a leader in the development of Collaborative Drug TherapyManagement inNew York State and hasrepresentedhiscolleaguesontheASHPPPMIAmbulatoryCareConsensusPanel.Locally,Dr.DiGregorioco-foundedtheNewYorkCityRegionalPharmacyResidencyConference,heldannuallyatLongIslandUniversitysince 2006. Dr. DiGregorio founded the PGY1 pharmacy residency and implemented PGY2 programs inAmbulatoryCare,InfectiousDiseasesandEmergencyMedicine.

Therecipientof theawardwillhaveconsistentlydemonstratedhigh caliber contributions in leading and advancing health-system pharmacy practice and fostering interdisciplinarycollaboration to advance the appropriate, safe and cost effective utilization of medication and pharmacy humanresources. Contest rules: Only for active NYSCHP members. BOD members are not qualified to participate. Please follow the logo design guidelines. Failure to do so will result in an automatic disqualification. Please submit your logo design to [email protected] or [email protected]. You shall receive an email confirmation after submitting your design. The final winner shall be recognized at 2017 NYSCHP Annual Assembly. The winner will also receive a complementary registration for the 2017 Annual Assembly. Deadline for submission is November 30th, 2016.
