CENTER STORY

One of the ways in which the JCCGW preschool stands out from other preschools is that it is situated within a community center that offers a wide array of quality cultural arts programming.

Last month, the Claremont Trio — lauded by The Strad magazine as one of America’s finest young chamber groups — performed before a sold-out audience in the JCCGW’s Kreeger Auditorium as part of the Polinger Artists of Excellence Concert Series.

The next morning, the trio presented a personal, interactive and age-appropriate performance for our preschoolers. The concert was made even more special in that it took place in the warm and intimate setting of the Center’s newly-renovated Goldman Art Gallery, with the stunning works of accomplished artist Gerald Wartofsky adorning the walls.

Earlier in the year, the preschoolers were treated to two similar performances by renowned musicians the Ying Quartet and pianist Orli Shaham.

The children also had the opportunity to meet with Sharon Dar, an upcoming Israeli artist, when her works were on display in the Goldman Art Gallery in February.

Early Childhood Education Director Ora Cohen Rosenfeld says that nothing can replace the experience of actually meeting a musician or artist to spark a young child’s imagination.

“We are so fortunate to be able to offer this opportunity to our preschoolers, planting a seed that will foster a deep and enduring appreciation of the arts,” Ora relates.

The JCCGW Preschool is a place that challenges and enlightens students, broadening their horizons in a safe, supportive setting provided by caring, highly-trained staff. Beyond that, our students are fortunate to find inspiration and motivation through the cultural arts opportunities they are afforded by virtue of attending preschool at the Center.

Bulgaria, Chile, Estonia, Israel, Paraguay and Ukraine. What seems like an odd grouping of countries actually reflects the home countries of 12 Jewish leaders who were part of a delegation that participated in the JCC Association of North America’s Biennial conference in Baltimore and then spent four days visiting our Center. They came to gain an understanding of Jewish life in our community, including our history, institutions and programs. The delegation visited under the auspices of JCC Global, which is the umbrella organization of all continental and regional networks of JCCs representing more than 1,200 JCCs worldwide. In addition to meeting with our staff and lay leaders to get an inside view of our Center, they toured with the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington, visited the Edlavitch JCC of Washington DC, and met with staff from BBYO International and The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.

It was clear from our wrap-up session that we provided each of these Jewish leaders with a deeper appreciation for Jewish life here, our models of engagement, the challenges we face and how we are seeking to address them. They found the variety of programs and services that we offer unlike anything most of them would have imagined. So, what did our staff and leadership gain from this visit? Two words: connection and perspective.

Time and again I felt and witnessed an almost instantaneous connection when members of our community sat down to speak with someone from the delegation. You would not be surprised to learn that playing “Jewish geography” quickly identified that the JCC Director from Paraguay, who is originally from Argentina, is very close friends with the new associate rabbi at Congregation Beth El, who is also originally from Argentina. Meaningful conversations came naturally and became deeper as we spent more time together.

The JCC Global delegates (excluding those from Israel) generally represented small Jewish communities (as small as 220 families in Paraguay) compared with our community. When I asked them about their biggest priorities

and challenges, I was surprised to hear that dealing with anti-Semitism was not on the top of everyone’s list. Their biggest challenge across the board was the lack of involvement by the majority of the Jews in these communities. They see their goals in a similar way to how the

Center sees its goals – sustaining Jewish life by building community and strengthening Jewish identity.

As I reflect on this visit, I am most struck by the notion that in many ways our Jewish communities are more the same than different. There is clearly a difference in scale (people and resources) and scope (breadth of services) in what

these JCCs from different countries do. But it is not a difference in kind, and the challenges of engaging the Jews in our respective communities is similar. On a personal level, these Jewish leaders (most under 40 years old) shared the same values and commitment to Jewish community and continuity as our leaders. If ever there was a “Klal Yisrael” (one people) moment, this visit provided it.

Four days with JCC leaders from around the world made it even clearer to me that there is much to be gained by building broader international connections. We have only scratched the surface through our JCC Global Hamsa Teen Leadership program which will conclude this summer with teens from Budapest and Israel visiting the teens participating from our Center and JCCs in New York. The JCC Global delegation visit has the potential to have much greater impact as we consider how our new connections and friendships might lead to new partnership programs that add meaning and enrich lives in our community. Maybe it is time that we consider expanding our mission statement to include this broader concept of Jewish peoplehood by including the following bolded italics: “We create a welcoming and inclusive environment, connecting the people of our Jewish community with each other, Israel, the global Jewish community and the broader community.”


June is always such a celebratory time of year. Summer is just around the corner and here at the JCC, it means camp is starting! After a year of planning, our halls will once again be filled with the voices of campers singing, the sounds of them jumping up and down with excitement, and the joy that simply emanates around the JCC when camp is in session. We are looking forward to yet another successful summer of Camp JCC! We also have reached another wonderful milestone. Our CEO, Michael Feinstein, has just celebrated his tenth anniversary at the JCC. We feel so fortunate to have had him here! Our center is a thriving, dynamic place, and he has been instrumental in ensuring that is the case!

Michael is a strong advocate for us both inside and outside of our walls – including those walls which are moving as we renovate our Center. So, as we celebrate summer and enjoy seeing all of the kids’ smiling faces around the J, let’s remember to say thank you! If you see Michael walking the halls, biking in class at the fitness center or greeting people as they walk in the front doors, please stop and say thank you and congratulations on your tenth anniversary!

can be a financial hardship. That is why a scholarship or financial assistance can make all the difference in the world. It enables us to provide a sense of belonging and the warmth of community when people need it most.

In the past five years, the JCCGW has provided more than $600,000 in scholarships to individuals and families for preschool, camp, after-school programs, JCC Maccabi Games and fitness memberships.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Dinner of Champions, an event which provides funding for Camp JCC’s nationally-recognized inclusion program.

The Irene and Abe Pollin Humanitarian Award will be presented to an individual who has been involved in public service and has made a positive difference to society. Individuals with accomplishments in the world of sports and with a strong connection to the Greater Washington, DC area will be inducted into the Greater Washington Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Teens with accomplishments in the world of athletics, academics and community service will receive the Hyman M. and Phillip D. Perlo High School Athlete Award. The JCC Maccabi Legacy Award will recognize an individual from the Greater Washington area who has played a major role in advancing youth sports on a local or national level.

Known to amicably “battle” over controversial issues at their weekly meetings, the JCCGW men’s group recently took a field trip to Antietam National Battlefield. Rabbi Elyssa’s Mindful Minute“Summertime and the livin’ is easy . . .” While this tends to be a popular time to rest and recharge, studies have shown that high temperatures make it harder for humans to think clearly. We are more prone to accidents, tempers and mistakes. In the Jewish calendar, this also begins a period of sadness leading to the memories of destruction and calamity for our people. Slow down, enjoy the weather, and don’t forget to cool off.
