If JCCGW members Debbie and Dan Stillman, who have been married for 10 years, had met when they were both students in the JCCGW Preschool, this would be a great story. Alas, when Debbie was in the Center’s 2-year-old program, Dan was an older man in the 3s. Although their paths may have crossed on the playground, the spark hadn’t yet been ignited.

Fast forward to the summer before Debbie would be a junior at Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School and Dan would be a senior at Walt Whitman High School. They were both Camp JCC counselors and met through a mutual friend, Yael Meirovich.

Over the next several years, Debbie and Dan ran into each other at friends’ gatherings, usually involving Yael.

“To me, he was always ‘Yael’s friend, Dan.’ To him, I was ‘Yael’s friend, Debbie,’” Debbie recalls.

Dan and Debbie Stillman with their children, Matthew and Adam

At a gathering of friends in 2000, Dan and Debbie (finally!) exchanged phone numbers. They began dating a few months later and pretty quickly (depending on how you look at it) realized this was the “real deal.” They married in 2004 and have two sons, Matthew (“Matty”), 7, and Adam, 3.

Debbie has a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Maryland. She works as director of major gifts at the National Council of Jewish Women.

Dan has a Bachelor of Science in atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences from the University of Michigan and a Master of Science in meteorology from Texas A & M University. He is senior manager of corporate marketing and communications at PlanetiQ, a commercial weather satellite company, and is deputy weather editor for WashingtonPost.com.

Debbie and Dan are active members of B’nai Israel Congregation. Debbie is an avid volleyball player, and they both love to play tennis.

Matty, a first-grader at JDS, attends Camp JCC and participates in the Center’s Kids After School program. Debbie and Dan are excited that Adam will also attend Camp JCC this summer.

“We still both have friends we made as counselors at Camp JCC, and we have made many new family friendships via Matty’s friends from Camp JCC,” Debbie relates.

The couple feels that the JCCGW is a hub for our community, a place where Jews

of all backgrounds can come together for recreation, community and friendship.

“Along with B’nai Israel and CESJDS, the JCCGW is the center of our lives and the place where our children are growing up Jewishly.”

Will this be the summer that Matty or Adam unwittingly meets a future spouse at Camp JCC? If their parents’ experience is any indication, there just might be something in the JCCGW air…

JANUARY 2015

As I wrote my last Center Scene column, I was preparing to depart for a solidarity mission in Israel with lay and professional leaders from JCCs across the country. It was a four-day whirlwind trip that took us to many places that I had never visited on prior trips to Israel. We sought to connect with members of those communities that were under attack during the war with Gaza this past summer, as well as people and organizations who were directly impacted by the fighting and its aftermath. The trip was absolutely incredible – personally moving, eye opening and very educational.

I had not been to Israel in nearly 17 years and much had changed. The juxtaposition of the modern and the ancient as well as the religious and the secular was still there in all of its rich and wonderful glory. It felt even more pronounced to me in some ways.

The words that come to mind as I think about the trip are resilience, diversity and innovation. Examples of each of these can be seen at every turn and they are frequently intertwined, especially among our community center colleagues across Israel.

Our trip took us to Ashkelon, Sderot, Nahal Oz and other communities near Gaza whose names have been heard frequently in the decade of rocket attacks, and especially during the conflict this past summer. The stories we heard from the people we met demonstrated a tremendous coming together of the communities to permit life to go on – especially for the children in these places. The decision to return for those who were evacuated for their own safety over the summer reflects a commitment to reclaim and maintain their homes and their country.

I was especially moved while we visited Kibbutz Nahal Oz, which abuts the border with Gaza. Gaza City can be seen from the edge of the Kibbutz. We spoke with a teacher about why she returned. She is originally from Argentina and was told as a child by her peers, neighbors and others that she didn’t belong in Argentina. Her family came to Israel and helped settle the frontier. She told us that when she arrived in Israel decades ago, she vowed to never again feel that she didn’t belong and was not going to be forced out of her Israeli home.

We learned about the incredibly diverse and dynamic music scene that has taken root in Sderot. While the music is influenced deeply by the fact that the city has been under rocket attacks for a decade, an amazingly diverse group of performers has emanated from this place and spread across Israel and beyond,

including to the Eurovision music competition (which is like The X Factor and America’s Got Talent in the U.S.).

I learned that half of the Jewish population in Israel is Sephardic – either they or at least one of their parents is a Jew from the Middle East or North Africa. Any thought that Israel is primarily made up of resettled European Jews is simply wrong. When waves of Jews were forced out of their homes in Arab lands and came to Israel, many

settled and built these communities in the south and brought their unique and amazing cultures, which are still evident and flourishing, with them. The interaction during army service of Israelis whose families come from diverse backgrounds has allowed Israel to take the melting pot metaphor that we in the United States use to describe our wonderful country to another level, which I believe is a source of strength and dynamism for Israel. It is reflected in the programs and services as well as the users of the community centers around Israel.

Israel stands as a prime example of the concept that necessity is the mother of invention. You see it in all aspects of life in Israel, from agriculture and business to politics and technology. The ability to take even those advances that begin from a negative or dangerous situation and find ways to apply it for other positive and productive uses provides a remarkable and wonderful case study of this principle. It was very inspiring to see this principle at work among the community centers in Israel. The ongoing exchanges that occur between our JCCs in the United States and elsewhere around the world and our sister centers across Israel provides a tremendous opportunity to find creative ways to meet the needs of and enrich the lives of our collective communities. We can all feel proud of our JCC of Greater Washington, which is at the forefront of this collaboration.
