Last month I warned you that we were expecting the HS2 select committee to visit Wendover on 21 May. With changes to the composition of the Select Committee it appears the visit has now been postponed until July at the earliest. What this has meant is that the plans and preparations we needed to make for their visit were quite well advanced so when they do come we should be able to give a good and positive account of ourselves. Watch this space for further updates.

The select committee published their initial report on the process and findings at the end of March before the General Election and it makes interesting reading. The key points I picked up are:• They encourage HS2 Ltd to be more timely with their responses to petitioners. They had apparently heard many complaints about late petition response documents, late offers and late meetings even in the corridor just outside the select committee door before petitions were due to be heard.

• On tunnelling they said quoting the cost of a proposed tunnel as a ‘very small’ percentage of the total project cost was not very effective or compelling. Each tunnel proposal should be judged on its costs and relative benefits as a way of persuading the select committee it was a good idea.

• In terms of viaduct design they said that they expected the design and materials would be the subject of local consultations, and that the designs would be sensitive to the local situation and the wishes of communities . . .

• In terms of noise they appear to be fed up with petitioners talking about World Health Organisation guidelines. They believe it is better if petitioners used comparisons with HS1, or actual measurements or estimates. . . I believe it is important that petitioners relate the noise levels quoted to their own particular circumstances. So for example if you like to sit in the garden and listen to the birds then you need to tell the Select committee how the noise from HS2 will affect you.

• They were critical of how HS2 Ltd had engaged with the farming community impacted by HS2 by taking more land than necessary and not understanding the consequences of their actions. They were supporting the appointment of an Agricultural Liaison Officer to engage early and provide some certainty in planning ahead.

• Their advice for individual petitioners was- don’t repeat things already covered- keep the length to 30 minutes- explain local context succinctly, what HS2 Ltd are planning to do and most importantly what you want them to do (excluding cancelling the whole project). At the select committee hearing I went to see, the Colne valley petitioners also wanted a tunnel. The Select Committee did ask ‘If you cannot have a tunnel what other mitigation do you want?’. You need to be ready to answer that one if it is asked.

Carers Week 8-12 JuneCarers Week is a UK wide annual campaign to raise awareness of caring to highlight the challenges carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. This year the focus of Carers Week is around building ‘Carer Friendly Communities’ - communities which support carers to look after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own.

Individuals and organisations around the UK will come together to organise activities and events throughout the country, drawing attention to just how important caring is.

Carers Bucks is organising a number of events throughout the County including an Open House for carers on Friday 12 June at its offices in Aylesbury, when carers will be able to receive a pampering treatment and health check. An afternoon tea for carers is also taking place at Missenden Abbey in Great Missenden on Tuesday 9 June.

Wendover Community OrchardIt’s been almost three months since the Wendover Community Orchard was planted so I’ve returned for a spring visit to see how it’s getting on; and thankfully all seems to be settling in rather nicely. The once bare grass is now blossoming with a flood of vibrant yellow cowslips that were seeded four years ago when preparations for the wild flower meadow first began, choosing this year to come out in full bloom and bring a splash of sunshine yellow to the orchard. Along with beautifully ornate purple selfheal, wild garlic and proud white oxeye daisies, the wildflower meadow is set to be a sensational mix of nature’s finest come the summer. The wildflower meadow will be cut twice annually at the start and end of the summer to allow the flowers to flourish and reestablish, changing the colour of the meadow, height and coverage as the months roll by.

The trees are also taking well to their new surroundings, with each one surviving the chilly winter months and now showing signs of growth. The emerging spring blossoms are trimmed from the trees to prevent them from fruiting this year, as it’s important that they develop a strong root system instead, and they’ll be kept under a watchful eye and maintained throughout the year to give them the best start possible. Each tree is protected by a special casing which will stay intact for the next 18months-2years before being replaced by a wire trunk cover to prevent wandering wild deer and rabbits from nibbling away at the bark.

The beauty of the orchard lies within the roots of its setting, as the plants and trees

which are now growing all have a local connection and are in remembrance of the brave war heros of our village. Take for example the Aylesbury Plum that fruits just six weeks of the year, to growers this heritage tree is not commercially viable for its small yield, and without the orchard it could easily be lost and forgotten. Now families, schools and walkers alike can hand pick and sample a whole new range of forgotten and rare fruits at their most fresh and finest. It’s expected to take around two years until the orchard is fully fruiting, although it’s ultimately down to Mother Nature to set her clock as the weather, success of pollination and amount of ground frost play a big part. Nevertheless the Wendover Community Orchard is already an area of tranquility and natural beauty that will only become more breathtaking with time.

Wendover Youth Centre launched their Apprentice- style initiative in September 2014. Budgens and the Youth Forum sponsored the initiative by donating £2000 each to the project. The Project brings together groups of young people who are challenged with taking a sum of money and coming up with an idea that doubles that money, They have the chance to raise funds for their youth centre and win a trip for themselves.

Over the last few months around 20 young people have been meeting and generating ideas to make this concept a reality. They will be holding a Youth Festival to put some of their ideas into practice. The youth festival will be free entry and packed full of incredible activities for everyone to try.

This is just the beginning; they will be working with business leaders to hone ideas and skills and to continue to make their entrepreneurial ideas a reality. They also aim to work with Community Impact Bucks to explore the initiative of crowdfunding. To find out more contact Becky - [email protected].

JUNE 1915The Gallipoli Campaign dragged on. The Third Battle of Krithia began on 4 June and was a costly failure with the loss of 6,000 British and French troops. The Italian Front saw the opening of the first of the eleven battles of the Isonzo River against the Austrian army in the Trentino and Gorizia area. Zeppelin raids on the east coast of England killed 24 and injured 30. Fighting continued in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) against the Turks who retreated along the Tigris towards Amarah, Kut and Baghdad.

It was in Amarah that Private Harry Wells of the Ox and Bucks Light Infantry died of sun fever. Harry was born in Dunsmore

in 1890 the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Wells. The Wells family were the licensees of the Black Horse in Dunsmore for over 70 years until 1932. Harry was a Regular soldier and the Wendover Magazine reported: “He had been several years in the Army and at the outbreak of war was

stationed with his Regiment in India. He had been fighting for some months in the Persian Gulf against forces of the Turks when he was struck down. We honour this brave soldier who died fighting for his country, and our sincerest sympathy goes to his father and mother at Scrubwood.”

The account of Harry’s funeral had all the elements of a tragic farce. On the way to the cemetery one man went down with heat stroke and had to be carried back to hospital. As the burial proceeded another man collapsed into the grave on top of the body. On the way back to the camp a third man collapsed and had to be carried back on the burial stretcher.

On 25 June Captain Geoffrey Samuel Smith, the third son of the Rev Albert Smith, once Lord of the Manor and Vicar of Wendover, underwent an operation in Wandsworth Hospital. Captain Smith, who was serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Gallipoli, had been wounded in the left arm on 3 May. Having spent five weeks in hospital in Cairo, he returned to England. The wound must have been serious and it was reported that: “He is doing as well as can be expected, but it will be many months before he can use the arm at all.”

The 5 June edition of the Bucks Herald printed a copy of a letter from Sgt Clement George Pickop serving with the Bucks Hussars in Egypt. The letter mentions Sgt Alex McLean (Royal Marines), of Firtree Cottage, Perry Street, who had recently been wounded. Before the war Clement Pickop was very active in Wendover. He had been Assistant Parish Clerk, a champion bowls player and a good rifle

shot. After the war he raised funds for war charities. He was much missed by his many friends in the Bucks Hussars, the British Legion and the Bowls Club when, after a period of unemployment in 1925, he committed suicide.

The Wendover Magazine noted that on 18 June a Mr White of Chiltern Road joined the Veterinary Corps and “with the enthusiasm so characteristic of him” motored from Wendover to Woolwich to take up his new duties. Mr White was already a Special Constable and a member of the Bucks Defence Corps.

The coal merchant at Wendover Station, Frederick Harry Caudrey, was fined for selling underweight coal. “Upon inspection it was found that the Station weighbridge was 84 lbs out of balance and proceedings were taken against the Metropolitan and Great Central Railway Company. The Company pleaded that various causes, such as rain and mud, would put the mechanism of the machine out of balance and therefore it was fitted with an adjustment screw. Because of staff illness and increased workload this duty had been overlooked. The Company was fined £2.”Mike Senior & Val Moir

New Halton Parish CouncilHalton Parish is a small rural strip parish running from fields in the Aylesbury Vale up into the woods at Wendover Woods (which are in Halton). The village itself is centred around the Wendover Arm Canal and is strongly linked to the history of Halton House and the Rothschilds. The major employer in the parish is RAF Halton, a centre for RAF training, which has a very strong relationship with the Parish Council.

Given the rural aspect of the parish the population is small and the actual facilities are limited. As a general rule most parishioners look to Wendover to provide those facilities and services that are not in the parish. However although the parish of Halton is small, the community is well integrated and has a village feel to it. This is reflected in the village having won ‘Best Kept Village in Buckinghamshire for 2 years in a row.

Being a small parish council the councillors have worked hard to address all the issues as they arise in an efficient manner. The recent

chairman Michael Blundell, who stepped down at these latest elections, deserves our thanks and praise for steering the Parish Council over the last few years. The current Parish Councillors intend to carry on the good legacy that he has left behind.

One of the key facilities the Parish Council offers is the village hall which is well maintained and very popular with people needing to hire a hall. A number of groups are regular users. In addition to this the parish council looks after some of the local street lighting and dog foul bins. Perhaps more importantly for parishioners the Parish Council acts as the conscience for BCC and AVDC to try to ensure they perform their undertakings such as filling in pot holes.

The challenges facing Halton Parish reflect the rural nature of the parish. Communication links is a major issue, the parish council has in the past tried to get a new bus service through Halton and improved computer access for villagers. Speeding and the use of

some roads as rat runs continues to be an ongoing problem.

Looking forward there are three issues that the Parish Council will have to look at:

1. the potential HS2 project and its impact on the parish particularly the Wendover Arm canal and traffic congestion during the construction phase. Halton Parish Council have already agreed to jointly petition with Wendover Parish Council so we all have a “louder” voice.

2. the decline in services being offered by both AVDC and BCC and their potential delegation to local Parish Councils will be a continual issue, risk or even opportunity?

3. the relaxation in the Planning laws may result in the Parish Council having to decide how it protects and nurtures its environment. With property developers purchasing agricultural land, it is a serious concern.

New Wendover Parish CouncilJennifer Ann BALLANTINEI am delighted to be helping to look after Wendover’s affairs for another four years. I have been on the Council for over 40 years.

I am sorry that there has been no election, which suggests that there are very few people who wish to help with the Council business. We have three vacancies to fill and I would appeal to you all to come forward to join us. Here’s to another four years of exciting projects for the Parish Council to tackle.

Marion Patricia CLAYTON I’m delighted to have the opportunity to serve on the Parish Council for a further four years, not least to see the completion of some of the projects already started. I believe our priorities for the coming Council term should be to:•complete the work on refurbishing the Manor Waste•resolve the car parking problem•with other organisations, continue the work to resist HS2 (Plan A) and campaign for the Chilterns Long Tunnel

proposal (Plan B)•remember that it is your money that we are spending and listen to your ideas for the future of Wendover.Bob DUGGAN I now start my second period of four years as a Parish Councillor having worked very hard over the last four years as Chair of the Council and as a councillor representing Wendover. • As before, my prime aim is to ensure that Wendover residents get the best mitigation against HS2. • My next priority is to ensure that all parts of the Wendover Parish are fairly represented on the Council. • Providing support to the Parish Clerk and her staff is paramount. • Ensuring that minutes and documents are clearer and easier to understand to the uninitiated. And to enjoy the

experience!Roz GREEN This will be my second term as a Parish Councillor. I have to be honest and say I was not entirely sure whether I wanted to stay for another 4 years, my final decision came when I realised how much I should like to see all the projects the Council has started come to fruition and so, another 4 years!

This term will see the refurbishment of the Manor Waste and much needed work at Hampden Pond. Also the vexed and long running difficulty of parking in the centre of Wendover should finally be resolved and, of course, continuing the fight against HS2.

Nicky GREGORY The last 4 years has seen constructive change within the PC which now runs as a cohesive and happy group determined, openly, to do their best for Wendover. Much has been achieved, but there is still more to do.

Parking remains the main issue for most people, an old issue I had hoped would be resolved by now. One of my reasons for joining the PC in 2011 was the lack of information being circulated from the Clock Tower to the Community. One issue I hope you feel we have solved. The last term of the PC has been enjoyable and constructive – I hope the same for the next 4 years.

David HAYWOOD The limited resources and powers at the disposal of the Parish Council are more than made up for by the dedication and persistence of its Councillors who strive to ensure that Wendover continues to be a great place to live. My co-option in 2014 gave me the opportunity to appreciate the real ambition and focussed approach of Parish Councillors who work on behalf of the people of Wendover. I am proud to continue on the newly formed Council in order to assist the local community, through supporting fellow Councillors and residents in managing the common issues that confront us.

Susan Jane HETHERINGTON I’m Sue Hetherington, age 63, retired, married to Andrew, living in Wharf Road. Prompted by the AVDC magazine, I took a deep breath and stood as a district councillor candidate for our ward. I also decided to be a candidate for our parish council.

My AVDC candidacy notes (still applicable to me as a parish councillor) will be found in last month’s Wendover News. I am delighted to be a Wendover Parish Councillor and look forward to starting in the role. I am, however, sorry to see that only 10 candidates stood for the 13 seats.

Alan Sydney MYERSWhile we cannot live in the past or remain impervious to change, the Parish Council must help us all to absorb the changes with county work devolved to Parish and Town councils while retaining the character of Wendover that makes it so special. Wendover is a strong community and so long as we work together we can create a Wendover which will take much pride in its long history but also develop as Wendover wants, not as dictated by others who have no knowledge of our fair town. The success of the library has demonstrated that we can control our future. Flourishing clubs such as U3A and WI all demonstrate a very lively community. The Parish Council should harness all this energy and interest and to lead Wendover to a future which the community has decided upon. Tom WALSH My first term as a parish councillor has been busy and rewarding. I see my second term as being even more interesting. Wendover faces many challenges. Challenges posed by HS2, future housing development and the devolution of services from district and county. There’s also the ongoing tasks of maintaining and improving the parish councils existing assets and services. Assets like play equipment, open spaces, street lighting and the Manor Waste.Much has been achieved and I intend to play a full part in the council’s future programmes to manage all of these challenges and any others that might come along.Stephen WORTH I have been resident in Wendover since 1983 having served 28 years in the Royal Air Force and then 15 years in the Home Office as an Immigration Officer. I was elected to the parish council 16 years ago and have chaired all the committees in that time.

I will continue to pursue a policy of keeping Wendover an attractive and vibrant community to live and work in with particular emphasis on recreational facilities, continuing the enhancement of the pond and creating a neighbourhood plan for the future.

We replaced the seat at the end of the footpath by the canal, refurbished the tennis courts, installed gas central heating in the village hall, tidied and planted up our green spaces. We have supported the development and publication of the parish magazine which was requested by parishioners, and supported and overseen the return of the village fete which was also requested by parishioners. We have supported the refurbishment of our very popular village hall. We have instigated discussions regarding the parking and traffic issues on Hampden Hall which we anticipate will, in time, resolve the issues. We have purchased additional dog mess bins to help you to keep our public spaces cleaner. We have jointly purchased mobile speed indicator devices to monitor road usage and speeds and conducted speed checks on our most complained

about roads. The council has also supported the successful ‘Stop Hampden Fields’ campaign group and has been actively involved in voicing your concerns in the building and development of Arla and the road ‘improvements’ on the A41.

This term we will focus on the issues we have with speeding and the use of village roads as ‘rat runs’. We will continue to spend time trying to restrain speculative developments of large housing estates which threaten to incorporate us into the urban area of Aylesbury and lose our ‘village’ identity, whilst supporting new development to help families move in and prevent us becoming a ‘dormitory town’: this will be done by the production of our Parish Plan. We will oversee the devolvement of services to parish councils and continue to maintain and improve our public spaces. We have a responsibility to change our street lights as several are so old that replacement parts are no longer

available and replace them with new energy efficient street lights. We will reposition the children’s play area by the village hall to improve the parking and renew the equipment to keep our young people safe and entertained. We will continue to develop and improve our communication channels by the introduction of our new website and informing you of current projects through the Weston Turville Times.

In common with other local parish councils, we have not had to have elections this year because we currently have vacancies. We would encourage you to join us in making Weston Turville a better place to live and work by volunteering a few hours of your time each month. You do not have to be a member of the council to help with the parish plan process but we do need you to have enthusiasm, energy and a willingness to get involved. Contact the Chairman, Martin Jarvis or turn up at a parish council meeting for further information.

Back in the Autumn of 1875 an unknown Scottish writer visited Wendover, staying the night at the Red Lion in the High Street. The young writer had already published some essays about his travels in Europe and on this occasion was writing about an Autumn walk he was taking from High Wycombe to Tring via Great Missenden and Wendover. Eventually this essay was published under the title of “An Autumn Effect” and is still available free to download on the internet. It is fascinating to read what this visitor has to say about Wendover 140 years ago:

“Wendover, in itself, is a straggling, purposeless sort of place. Everybody seems to have had his own opinion as to how the

street should go; or rather, every now and then a man seems to have arisen with a new idea on the subject, and led away a little sect of neighbours to join in his heresy.”

The author continues, “The church, which might perhaps have served as rallying-point for these loose houses, and pulled the township into something like intelligible unity, stands some distance off among great trees; but the inn (to take the public buildings in order of importance) is in what I understand to be the principal street: a pleasant old house, with bay-windows, and three peaked gables, and many swallows’ nests plastered about the eaves.”

The essay also includes a delightful description of the countryside around Wendover and a visit the author made to a farm and to St Mary’s church. He was fascinated by the charming young daughter of the landlord of the Red Lion and her collection of dolls.

This delightful snippet of Wendover’s history would have been lost in time except that this young writer went on to try his hand at fiction and in 1883 published a novel under the title of “Treasure Island”. His name was Robert Louis Stevenson and he went on to become one of the premier authors of the nineteenth century.

LindengateLindengate ExplainedAt Lindengate we support people with mental health needs, who feel their wellbeing could be improved. We do this through the medium of Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH). We think about wellbeing in its widest sense and recognise the need to focus on how the individual may rediscover their meaning and purpose in life.

Social and Therapeutic Horticulture harnesses the benefits of the natural world and gardening, and uses them to therapeutic means. The value of natural open spaces and gardens has been recognised for centuries, but the use of gardening as a therapy has been more recent.

At Lindengate, Gardeners (service users) work alongside volunteers and staff on their goals in a tranquil and private 5 acre site. We offer supportive and non-judgemental listening and the opportunity to escape some of the stresses of daily life. Activities vary depending

on the season and are guided by our qualified horticulturalist. For rainy days, we have facilities for Craft making and cooking is encouraged when our harvest allows. There are also many opportunities to have a go at the many DIY skills needed on the site

We recognise the fact that people who experience mental illness, face many barriers in society. One of our aims is to challenge this discrimination and stigma. In our dealings with the wider community, we proudly present the fact that many of our existing staff have experience of using mental health services and we believe that this allows us to offer a better quality of service to our Gardeners. We understand that social isolation can cause and maintain poor wellbeing which is why we seek to reduce this.

If you know anyone who you think might benefit from Lindengate, please do contact us for a confidential and informal chat.0208 144 4291 or [email protected].

Buy to let lending continues to thrive. So what does this marketplace offer the budding landlord or even an existing one to add to their portfolio? With the return on Savings remaining low, the relaxation on how the 55+s can access some or all of their entire pension fund from April 2015, may mean that some of these funds could be used as a deposit on a buy to let property.

The growth of the buy to let market has been assisted by some of the following factors:• Not enough homes are being built to satisfy

the demands of the growing population.• The continuing difficulty some renters have

in saving for a house purchase deposit.• The flexibility offered by renting.

Of course, there is no guarantee of success, especially if your tenant stops paying the rent; however here are a few tips to help any future landlords:Tip 1: Differentiate between your own residential home and an investment property, the latter being a commercial decision.

Tip 2: Speak to local letting agents about areas that are good for renting and how much you can expect in rent. Also decide who your target audience is – young professionals, students, or families?Tip 3: Most lenders will want to see a rental income of at least 125% of your monthly mortgage payments, so ensure that the maths stack up.Tip 4: Plan for void periods, if you do not have a tenant. You will be still liable for costs, such as insurance, and your mortgage payment.Tip 5: Be aware of the landlord insurances required, as well as regulatory issues (from both UK and Europe) and the need to check out prospective tenants. Also decide if you will use a letting agent to assist and what associated costs you will have to pay.

There are no guarantees that there will be a continuous letting of the property or that the rental income will be sufficient to meet the costs of the mortgage. The value of your buy to let property and income from it can go down as well as up. You will almost certainly require advice on the legal and tax issues involved.

Considering becoming a landlord? In Wendover we continue to see a shortage of all house types in both the residential sales and lettings markets. With rental properties in such high demand it doesn’t take long to find a tenant.

All types of properties are required for waiting tenants in this area and with the average rental return at around 3.5% to 4% locally, this is still much better than the interest rates offered by most bank accounts. In addition to the monthly return, the capital growth, which over the last 2 years has seen the average house price in Wendover increase approximately 20%, is also well worth taking into consideration. Of

course it can’t be guaranteed that house prices will continue to grow, but it is safe to say that unless we see a vast increase in new homes being built demand will not be met.

If you are considering buying a rental property and would like advice on what is expected of you as a landlord or you would like advice from a local agent on where and what is best to buy, come in and see us at 8 High Street, Wendover or call us on 01296 625000 and we will be delighted to help you.Ross Final – Resident Partner at Christopher

Wendover Evening WIYou may remember that the WI Event Notice in the April edition of Wendover News featured the WI Centenary and the Baton event.

The Baton was escorted from Aylesbury by eight WI members on bicycles, and bringing up the rear was a brightly decorated sports car.

Wyevale Nursery generously hosted this event. Supporters were provided with refreshments and their catering team

baked a special celebratory cake. A Wyevale horticulturist gave a talk on the WI and the Institute’s connections with gardening.

Finally, the Baton was collected by motorcycle and went on to High Wycombe.

Wendover Bowls ClubThe outdoor season is now well under way with a number of matches already having been played. This included a League Match in the Chiltern and Thames League which Wendover won. This took us to the top of the group after just one match. Time will tell what happens throughout the rest of the season.

We have two Ladies Teams playing in County level games - Top Club and Trundell Trophy - where teams from all over the area compete against each other. Good luck to them.

This is a tough competition to navigate an unknown course of 10km or 20km in the fastest time. Team TAGA entered the 10km and won with a time of 2hrs 8mins. The team contained three members of last years’ winning team which shows that experience counts! Our other team in this category, BSCBAMM, included many of our youngest Guides, and they did very well to finish the 10km hike which bodes well for future years. We also entered three former Guides as Wendover Young Leaders, team EMS, in the 20km hike, which gave our second win of the day in a time of 4hrs 27mins.

After a bright start from both teams Gerrards Cross took an early lead from a header. The game was evenly balanced with both teams having chances to score but Wendover dug in deep and Louis Fountain scored making it 2-1 and Wendover the winners. Fantastic effort and huge congratulations to all the boys.

Whitchurch Morris Men – Looking GoodMay Day came and went and started in glorious sunshine with a chill wind. It ended in warm sunshine at the end of a tiring day at the Farm Museum in Pitstone Green. Active Bucks Too few of us are doing enough physical activity. As a result we are missing out on the benefits being active can bring, such as reducing our risk of disease and disability, becoming more independent, connecting with other local people, and improving our mental wellbeing.

Bucks County Council has launched the Active Bucks project which aims to support more people to get more active, more often - with a particular focus on reducing the number of inactive people across the county. You don’t need to take up a sport or join a gym; any activity which makes you breathe faster and feel warmer, including gardening and housework, makes a great contribution to your daily activity levels.

For more details see www.buckscc.gov.uk/activebucks, including information on how to get involved, and how to become a community champion who will motivate others in their community to get more active.

More Seating and Shopping at No2No2 Pound Street have had a bit of a change around and have a bit more space for sampling those delicious wines and deli platters.

We are very proud of our great selection of wines from small producers who really care about the wines they make, often using organic and biodynamic farming methods. We believe there is a real difference between these and the commercial wines found in supermarkets. The best way to test this out is to come along and taste the wines for yourself; we can talk (and taste) you through our range any time.

If you’re looking for more than just the odd bottle for that evening, maybe planning a dinner party, starting a cellar, or just replenishing the racks, we can put your orders together with tasting notes and food-matching recommendations and deliver free of charge locally, whenever is convenient for you. Alternatively, you can take it away there and then!

Open Every Evening!Due to popular demand, from 1 June, we will be open late Monday through to Saturday. That means more time to book in for our informal wine tastings, more opportunities to catch up with friends, more chance to eat and drink delicious things or a spot of late night shopping!

British Cheese WeekBritish Cheese Week runs from 1-7 June and of course we are celebrating with lots of cheesy loveliness from this region. Come along to taste, and learn about, the great cheese this area produces.

Foodie FunWe’re starting to get our suppliers and friends together to plan this year’s ‘Tastes of the Summer’, our Food and Drink festival on Manor Waste, which is to take place on Saturday 25 July. More details soon!

Summer BeerAt The Chiltern Brewery we are proud of our perfect palette of pints, a range of draught beers for you to enjoy throughout the year. For 2015, in addition to our 3 permanent ales, Chiltern Pale Ale 3.7% vol, Beechwood Bitter 4.3% vol and new Chiltern Black 3.9% vol, we have already produced 4 seasonal and limited edition beers. Our current offering is Cobblestones Summer Ale 3.5% vol, a golden, light summer pale ale, refreshing and fruity, with hints of blackcurrant and very slight bitterness. It is well hopped and rich and perfectly suited to the warmer temperatures and lighter evenings of our spring and summer.

Our beers are available locally at The Point in Wendover and the Old Swan at the Lee, and in sharing packs and containers from 2 pint servings upwards from the brewery shop – ideal for summer parties and gatherings! You can also find a great and varied selection of bottled beers at the Loaf and Larder Farm Shop at World’s End, Budgens and here, at our brewery shop.

Monument Gold Pale Ale 3.8% vol, named after Coombe Hill Monument, now has a lovely new label to fit in with fresh branding that reflects our beautiful rural surroundings

here that help to inspire the names and flavours of our beers. There will be more new labels to look out for soon.

Finally, a reminder that The Farmers’ Bar in Aylesbury, with its historic courtyard, is the brewery’s tap and a great place to enjoy our beers plus many other unique beers too.

KT worked professionally in Calamity Jane (Gatehouse Theatre), Barbra Streisand in You Don’t Bring Me Flowers (Tour), Dancer (Aviva Advert) and appeared in various commercials and other performances.

In 2013 KT won a New York Film Academy scholarship for their intensive 2 year musical theatre & film course, building up a very impressive range of overseas credits including the lead in the movie musical One Door Opens, Elizabeth Bennett in a voiceover of Pride and Prejudice. She simply never seems to stop and with her range of performing, producing, teaching and choreography credits building up she is certainly incredibly gifted and someone up and coming to watch!

Wendover FC are Champions!Wendover are to proud announce that they have been crowned Division 1 Champions!

A fantastic finish to the season saw the Black & Golds beat Aylesbury Park Rangers 3-1 at home in the effective title decider. A screamer from Tom Sheppard settled the tie in front of an estimated 100 spectators who came to watch!

A straightforward 2-0 win against Longwick and a 5-0 thumping of Bedgrove Utd wrapped up the title to bring home Wendover’s first trophy for 10 years. Hopefully the first of many to come in the near future which looks very bright indeed for a club very much on

the up! Wendover finished the season on a fantastic 50 points, winning 16 of their 20 league games with a goal difference of +43 thanks to 66 goals scored and only 23 conceded.

T o p Goalscorer of the season was Jamie Spurden with a total of 29 goals, followed by Darren Woolard and Tom Sheppard both on 20, Tristan Nicholls on 13 and Bruno Passaro on 8.

We’d like to say a big thank you for all the fantastic support we’ve had this season. Come rain or shine we’ve been cheered on all the way! We’re very

proud to represent our fantastic village and we hope we’ve done our supporters and the village proud again this season.

Future Activity of Get Wendover CyclingThe GWC group was formed on the basis of an already existing cycling support group. In July 2008, we adopted our GWC constitution. The aim is to engage with members of the public – cyclists, potential cyclists, pedestrians, car drivers – all residents. Our objective is to promote cycling in Wendover and the surrounding villages. If more people cycled and there was less use of cars, Wendover would be a much safer and healthier place.

We have been successful in organising or supporting the provision of cycle racks on Kings Parade, outside the library, Budgens, the memorial hall, the health centre and at Ashbrook recreation ground. Our greatest achievement has been to ensure that the Manor Road cycle path from Tring Road to the schools was built. The funding was available but some local opposition almost denied the school children the safe cycle route. We also supported the provision of a cycle path from Sunnybanks to the Clocktower.

We have created a series of maps showing

how existing routes can be improved. These ideas are currently being considered by Bucks County Council as some funding is available.

The committee has decided to be less active. The website www.getwendovercycling.org will be maintained with contact phone numbers. We are hoping that some younger enthusiastic cyclists would like to take over the GWC with new ideas for promoting safe cycling in the Wendover area.

Chris Peeler, chair, Get Wendover Cycling

Brook House Follow-upThanks to all who attended the Brook House meeting, and to all who followed up individually. There are some actions which have occurred since the meeting which need to be publicised:1. the owner is building the two proposed

houses, and has sold one. 2. the Parish Council was unsupportive of

the proposals made by village residents. For both these reasons, we are not pursuing further action.

Thank You to VotersMy thanks to everyone who returned me as one of your District Councillors for Wendover & Halton. It is an honour and a privilege to have been re-elected for a second term. I will continue to work with the Parish Council and other community groups to ensure that Wendover and Halton remain vibrant and retain their unique identity. I commit myself to working all year round on behalf of all members of the community no matter how they may have voted.

Cllr Steve Bowles

A sincere thanks to everyone who voted for me in the Wendover and Halton District Council elections. The hard work starts now. I’m here to represent the best interests of all, irrespective of voting habits, throughout the year and to make good on my intentions: examining how to develop a walk through Wendover and Halton on aspects of historical and natural interest; promoting local tourism; deepening the links with the RAF community; developing outdoor youth facilities, particularly promoting Halton’s ATC; developing the local environment including the repair of country pathways; and supporting village life. I’m not here to take you for granted, but to promote the community for the better. It will be a privilege to serve you.

Andrew Southam

We three unsuccessful UKIP candidates contesting the 3 seats available to the ward of Wendover and Halton on 7 May would like to thank all those who supported us. We just missed out on all of the 3 seats by coming in 4th, 5th and 6th. We consider it a pity we were not more successful because we were

the only party who fielded 3 local candidates living in the ward. We also represented an excellent geographic spread of Halton Village, Wendover and the Princess Mary Gate estate. Sue is pleased to have gained a seat on Wendover Parish Council and looks forward to taking it up in due course.

Desmond Anning, Sue Hetherington and Marc Ruggles

Bones!May I appeal to my neighbours not to put out meat carcasses for the red kites. On several occasions now I have had to try and stop my dog eating chicken bones which he has found in my garden, not always successfully. I can’t imagine where they have come from if not dropped by birds.

Some people may not be aware that cooked bones are extremely bad for dogs, they can splinter in the stomach and cause all sorts of problems.

While not wanting to spoil the pleasure you get from seeing these birds circling, I ask you to think about whether the scraps you leave out could have consequences for other animals.

Our Dad, Ray Smith, was born in Northampton on 15 June 1958. He was the first son born to Jean and Mike Smith. At an early age Ray and his Mum and Dad moved to Narbeth Drive in Aylesbury with Mike securing a job at Adams Garage. Brother Gary was soon on the scene. Ray attended Broughton Junior School and then The Grange Secondary School in Aylesbury. He was good at sport and always interested in cars. He left school to complete an apprenticeship in motor mechanics at Ford & Slater, the British Leyland dealership on the Bicester Road also in Aylesbury.

On completion of his apprenticeship Ray joined his dad Mike, a panel beater and sprayer by trade, who was running his own business and together they became M Smith & Son in Stocklake. Mike and Ray then went on to form and run Fast Fit Tyre Services at the same premises. Dad met our mum Deb in 1976 and they were married at R.A.F. Halton in November 1978. Ray then became not the ‘son-in-law’ but a son to Norman and Vina Johnstone from Icknield Close, Wendover. Early married life was in Buckingham, soon to move to Stoke Mandeville and then Weston Turville.

Jamie was born in August 1982 and Daniel came along in July 1985. Our dad’s love of football meant that he was always keen for us to participate. (If we weren’t playing we were watching on the many TVs at home just so you didn’t miss any vital moments if you had to move from your seat by chance!) Dad managed the local team when we were playing, cheering us and shouting at us in all sorts of weather! He often sponsored the football kit, which frequently adorned the radiators at home on Sunday afternoons!

In January 1989 Mike and Ray moved from

Stocklake to London Road Service Station, South Street, Wendover with Mike and Jean running the petrol forecourt and shop until they retired to the south coast. Dad ran the workshop and MOT Testing Station and then had to purchase the freehold from Shell UK in 1996 at which stage Ray Smith Motor Services Limited was created. Dad worked exceptionally hard and we had some great family holidays as a result of it. Dad always loved dogs and he and mum bred Norwich Terriers for many years. He was an exceptional midwife!

Dad’s ‘passion’ was also gadgets with ‘passion’ being somewhat of an understatement, maybe inherited genes from his own dad Mike? You name it, Dad had it. He always had things but often didn’t know how they worked, he just had to have one. In December 2007, Dad finally got a ‘daughter’, in Heidi, as his elder son Jamie married in Washington DC. He spent the day behind the camera, creating memories we will never forget.

Our Dad remarried to Maria in July 2008 at St Mary’s Church, Wendover. He even had Sumo Wrestling suits at his Wedding reception and after a few drinks, everybody was getting involved. They shared many wonderful years together and once again his love for animals took over. After moving to Wycombe Close he soon had a house full again, with a pond of fish, two Bengal cats and two Cairn Terriers. He just couldn’t be without pets of some description.

Maria and our Dad had a happy time and he was finally looking to retire and relocate

down to the south coast of the UK to enjoy the fruits of his years of hard work and a happy retirement. He was looking forward to walking his dogs on the beach and enjoying the stress-free life that he so deserved after his years of hard work at the garage. For the first time in over a decade both his boys were living back in the UK, and were able to do little things that many families can take for granted, Sunday lunch, going to the football, a cheeky beer after work!

His death was untimely and sudden, having a stroke, at home, on the Sunday afternoon, from which he never recovered. We cannot express enough, our gratitude to the amazingly hard working staff at Stoke Mandeville hospital, who took care of not only him, but also the family and friends who came to visit with such a level of compassion and professionalism; we can only be thankful.

Our dad was the most generous, caring, hard working man you would ever have had the pleasure to meet, and as so many people have said to us since his passing, he was just one of ‘the good guys’, that are so few and far between these days. He always found happiness in other people’s success and happiness, sometimes even more so than his own.

We cannot express how overwhelmed we have been by the support we have received from family, friends, customers to Ray Smith Motor Services Ltd, and the Wendover community. The sadness we feel because he is gone is indescribable, but the memories we have of all the fantastic times we had together will keep us smiling for years to come. In tribute to Ray Smith – Father, Son, Husband, and all around ‘Good Guy’.

Page 37: June 2015 Wendover News

Born in May 2010 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Esmé lived in Weston Turville until August 2011 when she and her parents, Abigail and Anthony, moved to Wendover. A bright, happy and engaging little girl, everything seemed normal, other than being late to walk. In February 2013, baby brother Patrick arrived.

Soon after, however, it became obvious that Esmé’s development was not typical. She lost skills such as the power of speech and the use of her hands. Her breathing became erratic and she suffered from screaming episodes and chronic digestive problems. This extremely stressful time culminated in a diagnosis of Rett Syndrome: a devastating blow to Abigail and Anthony and those closest to them. Rett Syndrome is a rare neurological condition caused by a genetic mutation. It occurs randomly and is generally not inherited. It affects 1 in 12,000 live births, predominantly girls. It is a spectrum disorder: each girl is affected to a different extent. Typical symptoms are the loss of speech, loss of purposeful hand use, breathing irregularities and digestive issues. Most girls never walk, or lose the ability to do so. The majority of sufferers experience seizures and most have scoliosis. Many become withdrawn and anxious. Most girls lose the ability to chew and swallow, requiring a feeding tube. There is no treatment, and at present, no cure. Nobody can predict which of the many

symptoms Esmé will experience, or how severe they will be or even when onset will be. It really is a case of living in the moment.

It is not all doom and gloom however. Esmé is a happy 5 year old. She is still able to walk well. She does not suffer from any form of seizures at

present and her spine is straight. She can eat and drink as normal albeit with help as she cannot use her hands. So far, Esmé is living a full and interesting life.

She attended Little Acorns Kindergarten for her preschool years. She had a wonderful time and her parents have huge praise for the attitude of staff when her diagnosis was made and the months afterwards. Esmé is now at full

time school which she thoroughly enjoys. She loves swimming, the theatre and cinema, the outdoors, parties and books. Rapunzel, Cinderella and Tinkerbell are her heroines. She has many friends and is extremely sociable. She loves music, especially AC/DC, and she likes chocolate a lot.

Abigail and Anthony set up Esmé’s Allstars in February 2014 raising both awareness of Rett Syndrome and funds for crucial equipment and services to enhance Esmé’s quality of life. Last year they successfully raised £15,000 to buy an eyegaze computer allowing Esmé to communicate: by looking at letters and symbols on the screen she can “talk”. It shows that she is learning to read and spell. She is able to communicate her opinions and preferences. When she isn’t well she can tell her parents what it is that hurts. She tells her teachers “you’re mean” when they make her work hard and says “bummer” when it’s time to end an activity. Before her birthday, she navigated to the Birthday section of the eyegaze software to tell her teacher: “I birthday, I party, I candles”. All the tests, medical and otherwise, have shown that Esmé’s learning and understanding capacity are age appropriate.

Fundraising has been phenomenal as has the support of friends and the local community. Find out about future events and how money is spent at www.facebook.com/esmesallstars. To find out more about Rett Syndrome and the very real possibility of a cure, visit www.reverserett.org.uk.

Esmé and her family are a big part of Wendover life and would like to say a huge thank you to all who have supported them, and who continue to offer support in whichever capacity it may be.

View from the ChairFollowing on from my previous comments relating to the election for Parish Councillors, I have to say I was disappointed about the number of people who put themselves forward as this made it a non event. I had been looking forward to giving the Wendover Electorate more choice on who would represent them on the Parish Council.

I duly put out an appeal for residents to nominate themselves for co-option and I’m pleased to say that we have four or five interested people willing to stand. More details at wendover-pc.gov.uk/council/vacancies-for-parish-councillors-cooption/ A decision will be made at the Monday 1 June Parish Council meeting and things will hopefully progress quickly from there.

Robert Duggan

The New Council As only ten people put themselves forward and fourteen were needed to prompt an election, the ten go forward automatically. Nine are previous serving Councillors: Jennifer Ballantine, Marion Clayton, Robert Duggan, Roz Green, Nicky Gregory, David Haywood, Alan Myers, Tom Walsh and Stephen Worth. The tenth and new Councillor is Sue Hetherington.

Please see pages 14 & 15 for photos and a paragraph written by each councillor so that you know who they are.

Community Information OfficerThe CIO has now officially moved to the Library and we would like to thank the library for taking on this community service. As this has freed up the ground floor area of the Clock Tower we are considering best use of the space. We would, temporarily, like to offer local groups and charities the opportunity of using the Clock Tower window for displays. Please let us know if you are interested and contact us to book a date.

George and Dragon Bus ShelterAfter the accident last year that demolished the bus shelter there have been discussions between Bucks County Council and Arriva regarding safety. We have been held up in replacing the shelter as we have been awaiting the outcome.

LED Street Light UpgradesThe current tranche of LED street light conversions has been completed and the vast majority of feedback has been positive. We are considering additional upgrades for 2015/16 if the budget allows.

Parking on Double Yellow LinesWe would ask those who thoughtlessly park cars on double yellow lines in the centre of Wendover to be more considerate. When dropped kerbs are blocked serious inconvenience is caused to those less able, who rely on walking sticks, frames or disabled buggies to get about. It is also dangerous when cars park, illegally, on both sides of the road in Great Lane, as this makes it difficult, if not impossible, to drive through meaning cars turning off the High Street cannot do so, causing a hazard on the main road.
