June 2015

Dear Friends of the Academy of the Sacred Heart,

We began our year together in August with the theme of “Give us a heart that is one with your own,” a line from St. Madeleine Sophie’s daily prayer. Banners found their homes on the Rosary Campus next to the statue of Mary on the west wing, and our custom prayer cards found their way into the prayer of the students and adult com-munity gatherings throughout the year. I chose this prayer as a mantra with words to anchor us as a community in the attributes of Jesus’ heart as we journeyed together through the twists and turns of the school year: Humility, Gentleness, Love, Purity and Detachment.

As the school year ends with a plethora of beautiful ser-vices and celebrations, we move into the season of sum-mer knowing that we have received much from the Sacred Heart of Jesus this year as a community at the Rosary. This experience of the heart gives us cause for gratitude, peace and joy. Thank you for the gift of the “life lived” at our school and for all the many ways in which each of you contributed to the mission in our school this year. I am blessed to be in ministry at the Rosary where the found-ing mission is still so alive and efficacious. Have a beauti-ful restful summer!

The Sacred Heart Quiz Bowl team competed in the National Academic Championship held in New Orleans on May 23-25, making it to the quarterfinal round. They defeated teams from South Carolina, New Jersey and Iowa, to name a few. This is the second time in the 35-year history of the tournament that an all-female team has made it to the playoff round (the first was another ASH team in 2008). Congratulations to (photo-graphed from left) Lauren Paysse ‘16, Katherine Verlander ‘16, Alex Keiser ‘16, Laura Bruce ‘16 and team captain Carrie Christmann ‘15.

QUIZ BOWL NATIONAL QUARTERFINALISTS

MATH TOURNAMENTFourth grade “mathletes” competed in the Country Day Math Tournament on May 16 against students in fourth through sixth grade from other local ISAS schools. Congratulations to our top scorers for Sacred Heart Libby Payne and O’Neil Haddad and to their teammates: Madelaine Brown, Molly Coman, Lanie DeMarcay, Brooke Habetz, Allie Langhetée, Cali Jane Luetkemeier, Coco McLeod, Isabelle Moore, Olivia Prout, Adele Talbot, Cecile Thomas and Anna Watson.

Thank you to all the families who donated to the Missionary Childhood Association Lenten collection. The Mater Campus raised a little more than $600 to give to children in need around the world through this arm of the Pontifical Mission Society. It is wonderful to see our students and their families make this commitment to live out Goal Three, “a social awareness that compels to action.”
