June 2013 Volume 37
Dear Subscribers,
We have two HUGE stories this month. 1st – The annual edition of Telepresence
Options Magazine and the 2013 print edition of the Telepresence and
Videoconferencing Catalog have been published. As long-time readers of
Telepresence Options know, we don’t so much publish a magazine as an annual
reference work. This year’s issue focuses on B2B video and our cover story is on
Deloitte who has built one of the most sophisticated telepresence and
videoconferencing programs in the world. The company is connecting to 185
partners, vendors, and clients a month, earning revenue from their video program,
saving their consulting clients money, and making their consulting expertise available globally. The rest of
the issue features “news you can use” on creating or improving your own inter-company visual collaboration
program, a reality check on WebRTC, and the most detailed comparison of the new robotic telepresence
platforms anywhere.
The other big story is that we have significantly expanded our consulting practice, the
Human Productivity Lab (HPL). We don’t talk about the HPL too much and many TPO
reader might not even know that we have day jobs but when David and I aren’t reporting on
the latest and greatest in visual collaboration, we are consulting for organizations looking to
improve their visual collaboration capabilities. We have significantly expanded our
consulting practice with the addition of 9 additional consultants including multiple CEOs,
company founders, and intellectual property developers. We are calling it: the “visual collaboration dream
team” and we are looking to help organizations build Video Network Operation Centers (VNOCs), video call
centers, streaming video capabilities, address security, governance, & business continuity and develop visual
collaboration strategies that connect them to their partners, vendors, and customers at the speed of light.
There will be multiple members of our consulting team attending InfoComm in Orlando this week if you
are interested in discussing how we might help you. [email protected] to schedule.
Thanks for reading,

solving an advertising problem. It's turned out to be much

His startup's first product was a digital billboard that
changes the ads it displays depending on who looks at
them--showing, for instance, an ad for a toy to a child and an ad for aftershave to a man.

IBM develops telepresence robot to remotely assist field technicians
April 30, 2013 | Telepresence Options
Story and Images by David Szondy / Gizmag
If you've ever tried typing while talking to technical support with the
phone crammed between ear and shoulder, then you know the
meaning of frustration. Now imagine doing that upside down inside an
airplane wing while juggling wires, crimps and a schematic printout.
For some field engineers, that sort of thing is an everyday occurrence,
so IBM in collaboration with the University of Sheffield Advanced
Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in the UK is developing a mobile maintenance, repair and operations
(MRO) prototype robot. It's a combination of a smartphone app and a camera/projector mounted on a robot
arm, that allows supervisors and experts to have a more active presence on the job.

Intel's Haswell Chip Optimized for Videoconferencing June 3, 2013 | Telepresence Options
Story and Images by Charlie Demerjian /

Intel has finally released the next big thing in CPUs but
what does Haswell bring to the table? Depending on
how you look at things either a lot or not much, but it
certainly has enough interesting details to keep any
geek happy. The basics of Haswell don't look all that
different to the last two CPUs Intel put out, Sandy
Bridge and Ivy Bridge. Both have four cores max on the desktop, HT, a central ring bus and, a GPU on die.
From a high level view there isn't much there but the devil is in the details and there are a lot of details. The
cores are entirely new but not radically different from their predecessors other than adding AVX2 support.
