letter from the Cypress point presidentGoodson Fight Club

As many of you might have heard Goodson Middle School has an organized “Fight Club.” School officials sent out an E-mail to alert parents about the “Fight Club.”

which organizes their activities using the Internet site Facebook. Fox News ran a segment on April 29. A link to their story is: http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/news/local/110429-middle-school-fight-clubs-worrying-many

In one instance in April one neighbor’s child was so severely beaten that he was hospitalized and is facing three surgeries. Two arrests were made and the District Attorney is prosecuting the case. I have talked with the parents of the child, the arresting officer, dozens of residents and watched the Fox video several times. While there are conflicting accounts of what happened, some facts that are true:

1) There is an organized Goodson Fight Club. 2) Some children are being seriously hurt. 3) They organize themselves on Facebook 4) They have held their Friday afternoon fights in multiple locations, at least two of which are inside Cypress Point Lake Estates. 5) This activity is unacceptable and we should all be vigilant. 6) If you see a large gathering of children (especially on a Friday after school lets out) please call the deputy sheriffs. 7) Let your own children know not to even go watch any such fights (This is one of the areas of conflicting accounts, but likely the child that was so severely beaten had gone to one of the fights as a spectator, only to find himself in an unexpected fight.)

Your Board of Directors has discussed what is an appropriate response by us. There are still on-going discussions, so some of what I will talk about is still to be decided and reflect my own opinions.

1) We will make another attempt to organize a Neighborhood Watch program. Three years ago our attempts to do this did not get enough response from the neighborhood.

2) We are offering rewards for the videos that were taken of the fight where one of our neighborhood children was so severely beaten. The ADA prosecuting the case gave his OK. Les Sutton discussed the rewards with Crime Stoppers, but they declined to help. Apparently the rewards that they administer are for information leading to an arrest and conviction of a perpetrator of the law. They declined because there has already been arrests.

3) We have started an neighborhood alert

system using Twitter. This is a more modern method that employs a lot of the techniques used by Neighborhood Watch. The Cypresspoint.org web site has more information about how to sign up.

4) There are continued discussions about whether we should supplement the efforts of the four contract deputy sheriffs with a paid patrol of our own. Preliminary cost estimates reveal that to do so would require a dues increase of $75 to $100 a year per family. I personally do not believe that the majority of our neighborhood are in favor of such a large dues increase aimed at this purpose. When asked the specific question, the two Deputy Sheriffs that I talked to said that they do not believe that it is necessary. The NW Harris County M.U.D. provides four contract Deputy Sheriffs to supplement the otherwise district patrol Deputy Sheriffs. This supplemental coverage is typically 160 hours of additional patrol in each 168 hour week. (It’s slightly lower when you factor vacations, holidays, sick leave, etc.) The supplemental patrol is the entire M.U.D. 10 area which includes the four subdivisions of Cypress Point, Cypress Point Lake Estates, North Lake Forest and Park Creek. It also includes some commercial areas such as

the new schools in and around Cypress Woods High School and the H.E.B. complex. I’ve also talked to at least one of the District Deputy Sheriffs.

The Deputy Sheriffs said that the most common crime in our area is car burglaries. The majority of these are unlocked cars. Most of the rest are where the owner has left valuables in sight. The most serious crime is the occasional house burglary. The latest of which they have identified a “person of interest.” The reports of crime in our area are public record and are available on the Internet. Every instance where there is a response to a call to either the emergency number or non-emergency number is reported on-line.

My heart goes out to the parents and to the child who was so severely beaten as a result of the organized Fight Club emanating out of Goodson. The purpose of this article is to make our neighborhood families aware of the existence of the Fight Club so that they can take appropriate actions. While it may be true that other schools around the nation have organized “Fight Clubs,” one in our neighborhood is unacceptable. Arrests, trials, civil suits are all looming and may be the best actions to end this atrocious behavior.

history of the American flag: flag day – June 14th For more than 200 years, the American

flag has been the symbol of our nation’s strength and unity. It’s been a source of pride and inspiration for millions of citizens. And the American Flag has been a prominent icon in our national history. Here are the highlights of its unique past.

On January 1, 1776, the Continental Army was reorganized in accordance with a Congressional resolution which placed American forces under George Washington’s control. On that New Year’s Day the Continental Army was laying siege to Boston which had been taken over by the British Army. Washington ordered the Grand Union flag hoisted above his base at Prospect Hill. It had 13 alternate red and white stripes and the British Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner (the canton).

In May of 1776, Betsy Ross reported that she sewed the first American flag.

On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act: “Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”

Between 1777 and 1960, Congress passed several acts that changed the shape, design and arrangement of the flag and allowed for additional stars and stripes to be added to reflect the admission of each new state.

• Act of January 13, 1794 - provided for 15 stripes and 15 stars after May 1795.

• Act of April 4, 1818 - provided for 13 stripes and one star for each state, to be added to the flag on the 4th of July following the admission of each new state, signed by President Monroe.

• Executive Order of President Taft dated

June 24, 1912 - established proportions of the flag and provided for arrangement of the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each, a single point of each star to be upward.

• Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated January 3, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically.

• Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated August 21, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in nine rows of stars staggered horizontally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically.

Today the flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well: Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor, White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.
